How These Kids in Scary Situations Got Help

- These kids knew they needed help and they asked for it. In 2018, Emmy McCardell’s quick thinking saved her from a stranger who approached while she was sunbathing. In November, a Pennsylvania boy sensed danger and went into a local business for help. And a Nebraska child who got lost after school approached his friend’s home desperate for assistance. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.
The fact that little boy’s reaction when kicked off the bus was that he didn’t want his mom worried about him really hit me. What an angel.

Yeah teaching them the word stranger has been shown to confuse kids, making them think the person will look strange.

I remember a lady pulling up one time and said she was looking for her dog. I felt uneasy and ran inside and told my dad. Thankfully, she truly was looking for her dog, but you can never be too safe!
If I was looking for my lost dog I'd probably be so desperate I'd ask anyone and everyone I saw too, so understandable. But in saying that you also did the right thing. The last one made me cry. My daughter started school on her fifth birthday. At the beginning of December we had a bad snow storm. I picked her up after school everyday but was late by five minutes because of the weather. They went to a sitter in the morning so she didn’t know her way back to the sisters house and the sitters daughter didn’t go to school that day. When I got to the school and was told the teacher made my daughter leave I went to find her. She was about a block away at a stop sign crying because she didn’t know where to go. It beside my heart. I called the Principal the next day and he had no compassion, was told I should have made it in time. She could have been taken. 🤬 As the parents we should have taught her the way to the sisters house.
You should file a complaint to the school district, or go to the press. That's so unacceptable. I'm not a fan of homeschooling, but honestly, with schools like this, kids better stay at home

Because our town is so small the teachers have their favorites, most have kids of course. So their kids and their friends would get away with a lot.

The bus driver story reminds me of two different situations I've had with taxi drivers. When I was around 13, I had to get taxis home from school due to the awkward location and the tiny size of the school. So one day the taxi broke down on an A-road and instead of calling for a backup car or even just letting me call my mum, he told me to get out on the side of the busy carriageway with no footpath. A few miles away from home. What's worse, he'd just picked me up from a school specifically for kids with "special needs", and I told him I'm autistic and had no clue how to get home safely, but he just left. It took me over two hours to find my way home, wandering along the side of the carriageway.
The second time, I was 16 and being picked up at midnight since I didn't want to stay for a sleepover (dangerous and dumb, I know) and my friend had already locked the door behind me and told me not to knock again because her parents would be really mad if I woke them. So I get into this taxi, tell him the address, and he suddenly glares at me. Apparently someone from my apartment building had previously ran out without paying, so he decides to refuse me service, yelling to "get out of his f***ing car." I was crying by then and tried to explain that my mum was waiting at our front door to pay, I had no way to go back inside to my friend and I just wanted to go home, but he was so angry. I ended up calling my mum from the side of the road, sobbing because I was terrified and the area itself was really sketchy. Almost zero streetlights or security cameras, just huge trees and looming walls that could hide potential attackers. Luckily she booked me another taxi that showed up fast and the second driver was really kind and understanding (he had an autistic granddaughter) so he got me home safe. I couldn't imagine leaving a vulnerable person, let alone a child, alone in an unfamiliar place due to impatience or anger.
Please be careful at night

I can relate to the kid who was left at the wrong stop. When I was in Pre-K I had to take a bus to school. I was only 3 or 4 so I had no idea what my bus number was and got on the wrong bus. When all the stops were completed the bus driver kicked me off at the last stop and left me on a gravel road near a highway. Lost alone and frightened I wandered around for about an hour when two nice ladies found me and tried to help me get home. A hard thing when all I knew about where I lived was it was a blue green house with a basit hound. Thankfully my dad was friends with the PD where I lived and when the cops came to get me the officer told me he'd take me home as my dad and mom were worried. I don't know what happened to the bus driver. But I was told she wasn't working there after that. I'm glad the kid managed to find someone he knew to help as it took me almost 4 hours to get home after my mom realized that I wasn't on the bus I was supposed to be on. this reminds me of a similar situation i went through when i was younger than him. i was 5 years old and we had just moved to a new house. mom drove me to school one day, for me to find out it was a half a day and they told NO BODY. so they send all the kids home, i was the smallest and the only one going in the direction i was going, everyone else had groups but i was alone. so i ask can i go in so i can call my mom then ill leave the grounds. they completely refused to let me call my mom. even standing guard at the entrance so i couldn't walk in. so left with no choice i just started walking. i had no idea where i was nor how to get home. i walked past abandoned houses with large aggressive dogs, past cars who tried to "give me a ride to get candy" keep in mind it was a uniform school so i had to wear skirts, and skirts were super short on me cause of my below average short height. somehow by the love of mother nature i made it home, i knocked on the door to have my mom ask who is it for me to respond with my name, which understandably so left my mom to pause in confusion. when she answered the door to see me as the doorstep, out of breath, face covered in tears....needless to say mom was livid. she went up to the school the next day(since the school way empty by time i got home) and told them "if my daughter didn't make it home...i will burn you all and this building to the ground!! you never have to worry about seeing this child EVER AGAIN" and she got the school closed down right after that. so yea i know exactly how he felt.

my parent’s code word is tricky. if we’re out in public with my little sister and my mom see’s someone suspicious, she’ll find a sentence to say the word “tricky” in. like “oh, (sister’s name) come here, this looks tricky to draw.” or “do you think you could make that tricky thing?” and immediately we’ll go beside her lol. we also have a code word that every family member and friend knows, so if someone comes up to us and says “your parent’s wanted me to come pick you up. im their friend.” we say “what’s the code word?” and if they dont answer it, we get help.
Smart. If I ever decide to have kids, I'll do that, too!

Me and my kids have whole passcode sentences that NO ONE could ever guess. My daughter is 19 now and my son is 14… we still use the pass phrases when they’re out and I send the trigger text. Just so I know they’re good.
I’m very grateful that I’m 21 now and I’ve never been in a situation as a kid, teen, or adult where I had to make decisions like these. I’ve never been approached like this or assaulted in any form and I thank God
Same here. I was never too friendly a kid.
Good for u czennie!!!
Yeah same here, my dumbass would absolutely be taken
The little boy in the gift shop asking the lady to pretend to be his mom? That got me, I welled up. So frightening for these kids
I’m literally in tears watching this because these things could have gone in a different direction.
🌸 why did that bus driver do that, the child told him it wasn’t his stop. Seeing him cry like that just tore me up, far more less for his poor mom. What if something terrible happened to him, I shudder to think.
I’m just so happy he recognised his friend’s house and was able to get help. Just a miracle the mother just arrived two minutes earlier. If she wasn’t home, he would have walked away searching for help elsewhere getting more lost
I saw a child in the backseat of a car a few weeks ago making the tic tok signal. I followed and called police. That child signaled CONTINUOUSLY while i waa behind them. He's mom finally realized I was following her and she was LIVID at me for calling the cops. She said "does it look like my 9yr old knows about tic tok!?". The boy swore he wasn't making that signal. She told me her son was just "waving". Me and my mom both showed the cops what he was doing. Cops had never heard of that signal before. Bet they looked it up when I left. I was so upset because of the mom's reaction to me. But I couldn't NOT call and it really be an emergency. If something would have happened to that child and I didn't call, I'd never forgave myself.
To me you did the right thing., even women take kids. It's not only men.
you did the right thing
I've been in a similar situation, calling campus security for a dog locked in a car for at least several hours on campus. The owner of COURSE showed up while I was making the call. I think she was a professor. My word, she cussed me out so ugly. Even when security got there, she was literally making faces at me like a child. I just showed no emotion to it. Amazing someone like her is considered an educator.
Honestly, someone who's not done anything wrong, is probably going to at least be understanding. I'm glad you called
I cried when I saw this.he was so scared..but has a great memory.Your'e your own Hero.Thanking you friends mom as well. 🙏♥️👌
To Max's mother, THANK YOU.
Its so sad you can't let your kids play in the front yard anymore unless your right there next to them. So glad your daughter knew what to do and is safe.
Right nothing but creeps out here
I don't have a child, and even then my heart was pounding! I can only imagine how parents would react to these videos. I wish we didn't have to teach children about the monsters that lurk, but this is an important lesson and could save a life.
Maxes mom, love you!! Little man, you were soooo brave!! So proud of you!!
The little boy left by the bus driver broke my heart. Thank God he was smart and he's okay 💔 God bless him, he seems like a sweet kid 💕
I'm glad these kids were taught very well about stranger danger; it helps a lot.
I’m glad the boy was able to find a friends house and there was a trusted adult there to help him get home
God bless maxes mom!
Brave lil soldier ,love him 💪🏿💪🏿💯💙❤

This one boy in my old townhouse neighbourhood of Courtenay came our house in tears. I knew the boy and some of his family. I was living with my two roommates at the time and all of us home. I was in the kitchen doing something and that's when he rang our doorbell. He said he was scared and his parents hadn't come home yet. We were all concerned, so I asked if he would like some company until his parents got home. One of my roommates called the RCMP, while I went to his place with a deck of cards to play with. We played a game of go-fish. The police came and I told them what occurred. As I was explaining, the boy's parents came home. After a while, I went back home and continued my home activity.
The Max's Mom situation just tore my heart up. smh God protect the vulnerable children of this world.
Good parenting literally saves lives 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
