I'm a second degree black belt in SF Bay Area and also train BJJ for ground defense. I like the combo and agree that the point sport sparring emphasis in Karate has harmed its effectiveness for self defense. I emphasis free style (jiyu kumite).

@@RekonizeOfficial Point sparring is for competition and less than a 100 years old. It is not part of traditional Karate so we don't do it.

@@RekonizeOfficial I understood and I was agreeing. My point is that point sparring is not traditional Karate so no need to defend it. Free style is much more realistic.
