Hey fans, thanks for all the kind words here. This was my first fight after a 12 year layoff. I had a blast. I’m 44 years old 👊🏻. I want to thank all the fans, the Karate Combat team and of course my 9Round family. I’ll be back at it Feb 23 in Mexico City. I feel I worked the kinks out and will be at my best come my next bout in the pit.. Keep kicking everyone.

As a 61-year-old nearing my second BB, I thought the fight was entertaining. I was a fan of the UFC up until a few years ago; I was a huge fan of Lyoto Machida. Shannon Hudson's skill set is impressive. I came up in the late 70's and the 80's when all of this was just starting to really crank up, when ESPN actually broadcast sports and presented the PKA and some other martial arts presentations as well. I like the Karate Combat format with one notable exception: I don't like the prohibition against thigh kicks. I believe those are an incredible weapon. They were used to great effect by Rob Kaman and by the competitors in K-1. Rick Roufus found that he had to become conversant in that technique if he wanted to compete internationally (I was a Roufus fan).

Even if purists don't like sport karate, or wkf style of sparring, there's still the emphasis of being first and being technically sound to score. So, activity becomes irrelevant when the strikes don't meet the target, let alone the technical criteria.

I'll respond kindly since you have sense, and a valid reason for disliking kata, it's used because it's traditional, the kata is supposed to show you how to move in certain situations, and to concentrate on forms without the stress of being in a real fight, of course it's not practical to use in a real fight, because that's not the point of it, it can also be seem as a performance like how chinese martial artists often show how beautiful their martial art can be, it's a valid assumption that if a karnataka has sharp and fast kata, then he can execute those techniques in a real fight, of course, assuming that they do spar

That style of fighting doesn't work against a mid-level japanese or okinawan style. Side thrust kicks are hard to do without telegraphing and they are hard to get max power. Front snap kicks and front thrust kicks are easier to do and they are just as effective.

Understand what you are about to read is not a lie. My sensei did not give out black belts and I am probably at least 3rd or 4th dan by most styles' promotion standards.
I'm not saying the side kicks are useless, but not everyone is as flexible as JCVD or Chuck Norris. I tried training splits and side kicks for years, but my bread and butter was always the Front Thrust kick.
As hard as this is going to be to believe, I can beat two second Dans in a 1vs2 handicap match full contact. And the two second Dans I beat were probably each better than Hudson's performance in this fight. I made one of them tap out due to wrist lock and kicks, and then beat the other one 1vs1.
I was trained in Isshinryu karate and jiu jitsu by ex-marines for 6 years of training, and I was circuit training 20 hours per week at the time. That's 15 hours per week in the dojo, and 5 hours per week on my own time. I'm only a 1st Kyu because I technically failed the black belt test 6 consecutive times due to kata and bunkai requirements.
I use elliptical kicks and forward angle kicks too, and my small circle jiu jitsu is instrumental in defeating a 1vs2 handicap against other brown and black belts in full contact.
I'm too old and sick to fight now due to type 2 diabetes, otherwise I would film myself doing it. I could train Chinzo in the Isshinryu and Jiu Jitsu and combat judo techniques needed to beat two Hudsons at once in a no rules challenge.

@@MatthewNguyen-zx3de The fighters in the UFC are often not fully trained Okinawan Strikers. It takes 6 to 10 years ot get a black belt in real Okinawan karate alone. A real Isshinryu thrust kick leaves a bruise that takes 2 weeks to heal up, same weight class vs same weight. Okinawan karate also teaches small circle jiu jitsu and combat judo these days, so when you get a brown or black belt in "Karate" you now have brown belt level judo and standing jiu jitsu. They encourage cross-training in gracie BJJ too.
Kamaru Usman fights like me though. Lots of front side snap kicks and rear side thrust kicks, very few high kicks and fewer spin kicks. He uses his punches and a few elbows to attack the face, and he uses his kicks on the body and legs.
Sean Strickland CAN fight like me, but he left hish brain at home in the cookie jar when he fought Dricus Du Plessis. He forgot to use sraight kicks and just lost for no good reason.

Chinzo is old now. I know him and his brother before they start mma. Back in time i remember i was more eager to see how Chinzo would performe in mma than his brother. Lyoto always worked on counters while Chinzo was really aggressive on his style, always walking foward. It was really plesant to watch him fighting at shotokan tournaments.

E tambem chinzo nunca foi ao chão, isso conta muito no karate. Apesar de ter levado um golpe que deixou marca, geriu melhor o combate.

When Hudson telegraphs his side thrust kick, Chinzo should evade at a diagonal FORWARD and then roundhouse to the body or jab him in the face. You can also sweep the planted leg after the telegraphed kick attempt, and then try to score some points in ground and pound. I guess sweeps are allowed? Another counter is just shuffle your feet a bit diagonally and front snap kick Hudson in the body after he telegraphs that side kick.
I'd say Machida's front thrust kick is pretty wicked for his weight class. Mine is stronger, but I'm like 30 pounds bigger than him at natural weight class.
I'd say Machida looks like a 3rd or 4th Dan, while Hudson looked like a 1st or 2nd Dan. Hudson needs to work on not telegraphing his kicks so much. It's too easy to evade or jam them and Machida really started countering him with both a rising kick off the rear foot and thrust kicks from the rear foot. This is a technical fight, but it could have been better if Hudson didn't have bad habits.
