- People ask: “What could go wrong, if I receive a botox injection for my inability to burp and associated symptoms caused by retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD)?”
In this video, Dr. Bastian distinguishes the difference between early EFFECTS that are expected, and COMPLICATIONS patients have experienced in a caseload of approximately 870 people. This informal discussion will likely reassure persons considering this treatment for the severe daily misery caused by R-CPD.

Honestness is the key for the trust between doctor and patient. Thank your Dr. Bastian!
I've thrown up an average of 50 times a day for the last 10 years. It has been the bane of my existence. I've always suspected my lack of flatulence was exacerbating my bloating. This feels like confirmation to me. Thank you
Thank you for posting this and thanks for being such an amazing advocate for noburpers!!!!
High heart rate can also be a symptom.
Thank you for this informative video!
You are so welcome! All the best!
Thank you, is there any doctors you know of in New Zealand who could perform this procedure?
Hello Dr. Bastian. Please hear my story. My vocal damage is so bad, that I have great difficulty to speak everyday, it hurts me and it keeps getting worse. This causes me a lot of stress, physical and psychological too. I simply want my ruined vocal cords removed, a total cordectomy. Is my situation enough to convince a specialist surgeon to perform the procedure on me? I just want them out for good, and have some peace of mind and soul.
I have LSN and elavil use to work for me. I coughed for 15 yrs before I was dx’d. Any recommendations?? I can’t find anyone in Louisiana or Dallas area that does Botox injections for LSN
I think you are referring to SNC or sensory neuropathic cough. Sometimes amitriptyline benefit is refreshed by a time off of it. Usually a week does it. Call large ENT groups in your area and ask the triage nurse “Does the laryngologist in your group treat sensory neuropathic cough?” If crickets, call the next group. There surely must be someone in your area but call first…
Thank you for sharing this. I am instead facing an issue after the botox with choking on/coughing up mucus since the procedure. I do not feel sick and have tried some cold medication and allergy medication just in case. It is quite scary when it keeps coming up and I cannot get a breath in while I try to clear it. Is this common after the procedure or am I an odd case?
Do you still have that issue?
R u fine now sir?
Hello, Great video. I would like to ask a few questions about this, i posses all of the syndromes minus nausea, and hypersalivation.
I was wondering if you had any patients reported extremely acidic acid refluxes when lying down either on their side or on their stomachs. I have that, is there a link between that and r-cpd ?
I also haven't vomited in 7-8 years, is there a possibility it is related to r-cpd or have i just been lucky enough to avoid gastroenteritis or any diseases inducing vomiting?
i was also wondering if you've heard anyone getting the Botox procedure in Europe, i live in mainland France (hence the approximate English) so flying to north America is out of the picture for financial reasons.
I also find i can force the gurgling instead of letting them freely "escape". Is it a common thing ?
R-cpd it self isn't the main issue, I don't mind making weird gurgling noises but I'm scared of possible side effects of the disorder. Been suffering from this since i can remember.
Thanks a lot for reading, hoping for an answer from you.
So sorry to hear of your difficulty. Maybe understand R-CPD well, just to be sure, and maybe take this article to your French doctor. journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/2473974X19834553 Also a major resource page on www.laryngopedia.com. I have explained R-CPD in detail to Dr. Kathelijne Delsupehe in Belgium; Dr. Karagama in Manchester, England; Dr. Marcus Hess in Hamburg... I don't know anyone yet in France who does this, but maybe ask Dr. Philippe Perreau in Paris? Bonne chance.
Bonjour je vais avoir une injection de botox le mois prochain à Nîmes ( hôpital CAREMEAU)

Hello, thank you for your video!
I’m 19 and i discover that i got this RCPD with your help so i just had botox three days ago, i didn’t hear you speak about some vocal chords problem, i have difficulty to talk and i dont know if it’s normal bc my doctor doesn’t answer me, i hope you can answer me, it’s stressful.
Sorry to hear this. It is impossible to know what might be the case without an examination. A few do have a voice change after routine and very skillful treatment. Often we can't hear it over the phone but the patient says things like voice is weaker. Thankfully, our few patients with voice change always recover as the botox wears off.
@@Laryngopedia I’m gonna take a appointment for that, thanks for your answer. Can you tell me how long can difficulty to swallow take almost ? Sorry if my english is bad I’ m belgian
@@luciefeller5697did you get the injection in office or under general anesthesia?
@@ahlaali7934 under general anesthesia
Do the laryngospasms keep happening if theyve happened once or do they stop? It was terrifying 😢
It can be a random event especially if there is a URI. I hope that is the case for you.
Dear Sir,
I have an issue with my vocal cords.
One of my vocal cords on the right side is partially damaged due to stomach acidity reflex.
However, when the cords move/vibrate the damaged one won’t latch in order to produce a clear voice.
Is there a remedy or exercise to cure the impacted/damaged cord?
Your support is highly appreciated.
Regards
Did you found your cure sir?
Can Gas-X help with this?

Can be done via EMG in the office setting...
@@Laryngopedia whats EMG
There is an option for office (EMG) placement. See the article on www.laryngopedia.com.
I've been trying to make an appointment, when can someone call me back?
So sorry...We've conveyed your request to Bastian Voice Institute. Contact there: laryngopedia@bastianvoice.com or kyle.bell@bastianvoice.com
Have you had any cases of temporary or permanent loss of taste?
None out of our ~1300 cases so far...
I (20M) recently had a 100 unit botox injection under GA in Raleigh, but following the procedure (while still under GA) I had a laryngospasm, which caused postoperative pulmonary edema. Basically, my lungs filled with fluid because of the negative pressure caused by the spasm. I had to stay in the hospital for 3 days because my o2 levels were too low.
Now, I'm at home recovering and luckily my o2 levels are better, but I am really suffering from the slow swallow. I even struggle with just water. My question is, could the laryngospasm have potentially changed the way my UES reacted to the botox? I also was recovering from a common cold before the procedure, so maybe that had an impact?
Im 5 days post procedure, and have only experienced 1 productive burp. Im just a bit worried my complication or my cold could have effected my healing from the botox, or how my UES reacts to it.
With all that being said, I cannot thank you enough for all the videos! You have saved so many people and should be proud.
Thank you for your kind comment, and very sorry to hear of your intraoperative laryngospasm. These are more common in the context of a URI. They occur occasionally on emerging from general anesthesia. L-spasm in that context is a very different matter than garden variety L-spasm described in my videos. As for whether this affected your result, if placement was accurate, I do not think so...And I hope by now you are burping merrily...
@@Laryngopedia I'm now 4 weeks post-op, and I have been burping!! It's amazing how life-changing just having the ability to burp is; nearly 80% of my anxiety is gone and the worst of my RCPD symptoms have vanished. Luckily all of my edema issues have faded away, although the slow swallow is still present. I've heard people who are really affected by the slow swallow have better results in the long run, so I am hoping that is the case. For anyone on the fence about getting the procedure, do it.
I'm so glad you took this step and are seeing the benefits!
@@derpypotatoesxd6382hello how are you feeling now? Really worried about some of these side effects
@@bigcobrob989 feeling pretty good, there is still lingering, minor slow swallow when I eat dry foods, but just a small sip of water is all it takes and it goes down. But do not let the side effects worry you, I did enough worrying about them for a lifetime before the procedure. I think I was one of the people who had the slow swallow pretty bad, but looking back at it I’d do it over again a million times to be able to burp. It’s really life changing.
Sir I live in bangalore.. India....can anyone treat RCPD??? PLEASE REPLY SIR
Sorry we don't know anyone personally in Bangalore. But as you may have seen in several other comments, the idea is to call larger private or university ENT groups and ask the triage nurse: "Does any doctor there help people who can't burp?" If "no," then ask to see the laryngologist (throat sub-specialist) and take Dr. Bastian's original article, as it includes a complete description. Also lots of resources on the Laryngopedia.com page that comes up when you search "R-CPD."
hey..are you still struggling with R-cpd
Have all these people also had Gastric Bypass surgery??
No. Of maybe 875 treated through mid-March 2022, I think there may have been one or two... R-CPD is not directly related to gastric bypass surgery.
