In earlier seasons, Squidward was a jerk and got tortured as karma... Now he gets tortured for simply existing.
Also, Spongebob would often feel bad for what he did to Squidward, even if he did nothing wrong. Spongebob cared about Squidward, and Squidward cared about Spongebob (even if he found him annoying most of the time)
@@symptomofsoulsthis is why Pizza Delivery and Band Geeks are still my favorite episodes.
@@villainkaiju Both of those episodes are absolutely GOATED!
Sometimes like skill crane he wasn't a jerk until he was tortured and finally won interestingly
Maybe Squidward did one bad deed too many and Spongebob went from being a peaceful deity to a wrathful deity.
A certain creepypasta about said squid is feeling a lot more justified now
You mean squidward's s**cide?
Red Mist/Squidward's Suicide?
@@TheBlueMarbleItself Yeah, that one
I have a feeling even death would not save him. SpongeBob would just go out of his way to somehow revive Squidward, he's just that insane now.
In concept this sounds like an awesome episode which would teach kids about moving on, and hell Squiddy could acctually return at the end and have a happy ending but obviously that's not allowed by modern standards (old modern standards anyway, they've been torturing him for years). And we can't forget about the good ol' status quo so he'd just go back to being tortured again.

Not once has that yellow lad learned that Mr. Squidward needs some personal space and alone time
Now I want an episode of SpongeBob learning this, leading to squidward's sheer paranoia building up as he keeps expecting SpongeBob to pop out of nowhere, but he never does
This is what happens when you don't leave introverts alone
He did actually in Squid Wood from season 4 and he created Mini-Squidward as a solution.
@@djt08031996you want Plankton Paranoia with Squidward and SpongeBob which was already similar to Clams?
@@djt08031996omgggg yessss, like squids day off, spying on SpongeBob to see when next hes gonna bother him instead of actually relaxing and enjoying being alone
Squidward has his flaws where he does deserve some karma, but these days, he’s just a punching bag for no good reason.
He’s my favorite character, and he doesn’t deserve to be treated like trash.
Exactly like bro would literally not even be doing anything in an episode and then have to experience the most gruesome pain imaginable
Yeah.
For example in older episodes like grandmas kisses or the yellow book where squidward watches SpongeBobs diary. In these episode Squidward should’ve had deserved an actual lesson, but as you said, Nickelodeon thinks we hate Squidward so they make this Weird crap since season 6
He truly is the Butters of South Park, he just exists to be a punching bag.
In the older episodes, he's depicted as a grouch who doesn't want to play with SpongeBob and can be a jerk to almost anyone who smiles in his face. After the movie, he just wanted to get on with his life then SpongeBob got high on ecstasy and got all in his face, at home and work, even going into "creep" mode. Not to mention having his dreams taken from him. 😔 Nickelodeon is very sadistic with the torture they put Squidward through.
Squidward is up there with Kenny and Meg in most tortured characters in media at this point.
Megward the Wizard
The saddest part is iirc Family Guy started toning it down
Then family guy decided to tone down her mistreatment, not SpongeBob.. yet
At least Kenny takes W's too, like scaring his parents into being less abusive towards him and his siblings as his Mysterion persona.
Tom
This is why I loved when squidward was happy, like when SpongeBob make his tiki land or when they made a band, it made me shed a tear.
If spongebob ever ends, what if the last episode was where squidward quits the krusty krab and moves away so he dosen't get tortured anymore. I would love that.
There was already an episode where he quit the Krusty Krab, and an episode where he moved away
@@platinum3690 yes but then he came back
But It would still be reusing two different episode's plots.
@@platinum3690 OKAY so? that would still be a good plot
I would just prefer the finale being an original Idea rather than stealing the plot from two different episodes.
Modern spongebob is just so mean spirited and cruel.
While watching "Little Yellow Book"...
Everyone: "I hate Squidward for reading Spongebob's diary."
Me: "I'd say Spongebob deserved it after invading Squidward's privacy numerous times, along with other atrocities."
I want the Squidward Torture to stop.
I agree it’s getting really annoying.

@@GreydaCloud Yes
You can stop it by not watching the show. Nothing after the movie matters anyway, and has no bearing on the real Spongebob.
@@Jamseth_Ingramiousdid we ask for your opinion? No we didn’t
SpongeBob tortures Squidward so badly that he wants to move out permanently and leave Bikini Bottom for good, but SpongeBob would continuously stalk him to force him to move back next to him so the torture can continue and SpongeBob would make sure Squidward can never move out
At this point, I probably wouldn’t blame Squidward if he had Spongebob killed or something. Him having his back in a moment like Pizza Delivery would feel even less sense nowadays
Yeah unfortunately
Episodes like "Jellyfishing", "Opposite Day" and "Club SpongeBob" are technically tortuing Squidward, but I think the reason neither of them are hated as much as later episodes are because..
In Jellyfishing, SpongeBob and Patrick are genuinely sorry about torturing Squidward and actually try to give him a gift, being a jellyfish. Squidward even gets some revenge in the end by sending the jellyfish to attack them. Same with Opposite Day, where, although not shown, it's implied Squidward got his revenge by chasing the two down with that bulldozer.
Club SpongeBob at least has some iconic jokes and Squidward isn't really tortured as he is messed with.
Modern SpongeBob just has Squidward suffer with no payoff. Half the time, he doesn't even get revenge or even deserve it. It just happens.
Mandatory Music is a modern episode, and Squidward literally got what he deserve in the ending where he got his music talent with his music being loved by everyone.
To go even further, Jellyfishing had a scene where Squidward slaps a Jellyfish at the beginning: which the writers might've treated as an act of animal abuse.
Opposite day wasn't about bullying Squidward, it just had an ending that didn't work out in his favor.
and Club Spongebob had Squidward be the one that caused them to get lost (Admittedly by accident) by climbing into their treehouse when they told him not to.
In Opposite Day Squidward ends up paying not being able to move because SpongeBob took his idea of being the opposite of how he is (excuse only to not have him being annoying for the house seller)
In Club SpongeBob he
1- Mocks on them.
2- Gets in the treehouse, getting stuck in the process.
3- makes the treehouse launch them into the kelp forest.
4- makes fun of the magic shell.
And ends up paying for his behaviour. Not because SpongeBob wants to make him suffer.
In I Was a Teenage Gary, Squidward was irresponsible when Bob told him to take care of Gary. And he's tormented by snail Bob, and ends up becoming a snail too.
Karma.
In Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost he uses his aspect to fool them thinking he's a ghost, but everything gets out of hands when they try to BURY HIM ALIVE.
Hell, even in Season 4.
In Funny Pants he makes up something to make Bob stop laughing for one day. But in the end his lie was real and now he'll have the laugh he hates the most for himself.
There are elements of KARMA and IRONY. Not just making him miserable for 11 minutes.
Then you have things like Are You Happy Now? or Ink Lemonade.
I would say only Jellyfishing comes closes in the actual torture category; the other ones are more unintentionally ruining Squidward's day.
And even then, most of the violence is accidental and besides the icon "Firmly grasp it" every injury Squidward suffers is abstract and caused by his own actions instead of Spongebob and Patrick bodily harming him.
I hated Club Spongebob. I don't understand the praise for that episode. It's boring, a squidward torture episode and Spongebob and Patrick being ignorant.
No wonder that squidward su*cide is canon now...
19:29 "squidward calls in sick because he's literally too scared to go to work"
I'm speechless. I genuinely can't believe someone would write something so cruel.
This is a million times worse than him being tortured for no reason. This is literally him being tortured for going "I am so genuinely terrified to deal with the overstimulation and stress of being at work again that I need to call in sick and just take the day to relax."
And then they actively torture him for it while playing it off like it's completely valid.
Mr Krabs is LUCKY he even got a dang phone call. Squidward could've (and clearly SHOULD'VE) literally just stayed home with no notice.
And Spongebob... jesus freaking christ. SPONGEBOB. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THAT GUY. SERIOUSLY. DOES HE GENUINELY JUST HAVE 0 IQ AND MORALITY??? DO THE *WRITERS* JUST HAVE 0 IQ AND MORALITY?? WHAT THE HELL?????
THIS IS A SHOW FOR KIDS!!!!!!
YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO TEACH THEM GOOD LESSONS!!!!!! SO THEY GROW UP TO BE GOOD PEOPLE!!!!!!
WHAT IS THIS TEACHING THEM??? IT'S PERFECTLY OKAY TO TORTURE PEOPLE IF YOU'RE STUPID???
sorry I gotta stop writing in all caps but this is genuinely pissing me off
*Squidward is now the protagonist that everyone loves and roots for. Spongebob is now the braindead menace to society that I want to personally throw into a wall of spikes and lock in a mental asylum forever. And that's not a good thing.*
Mindless unwarranted torture does not equal comedy, especially not in a kids show. I'm genuinely starting to think these writers need therapy.
They've flanderized and one-note'd characters like Spongebob and Pat to hell and back - they don't feel like 3d characters with actual personalities anymore. And it's clearly been hurting the enjoyability of the show - BADLY. I think a reason why we prefer the earlier seasons so much is because these characters still feel like PEOPLE more often than not.
I'm also convinced these writers are just running out of good ideas fast because of how long this series has been going on. It's hard to come up with new ideas. It doesn't exactly excuse these shit storylines but I can see why it may happen. Especially since they're also writing Kamp Koral / The Patrick Star Show. Give them a break? Hire new writers? Anything?
Probably the coldest take ever but I‘ve always hated the torture episodes, no matter who was the target. I just felt super bad for the characters and couldn‘t understand how someone could think it‘s funny to see someone in physical and emotional pain.
Same except if its Mr crabs getting tortured lol
how about if the character deserves it
You're a good soul
@@Waddle_dee_edits In the context of the episode?
Yeah as a kid I hated that trope so much and it was prevalent in so many cartoons
I just realised how spongebob’s face is pushed up a bit and stretched like 85% in season 13
It's too big
I don’t think squidward would have snuck into spongebobs pool. Instead I think he’d be the type to build a fancier pool in his own yard. 17:44
Who knew squidward would become a sympathetic and relatable character
Modern Spongebob can be summed up as horrible people being horrible people to one another (sometimes without realization) and ONLY Squidward getting punished for it.
Snails in Sponge Bob are a weird cross between snails, cats, dogs, and other things as well. They meow, but they have a lot of dog tendencies.
Im honestly flabbergasted. I never knew other SpongeBob fans considered the start of the shows “dark era” beginning with season six. I always thought the eighth season is when it went down hill. Like obviously the classics are 1-4 (it’s the reason damn near every frame becomes a meme) but I always thought 5-7 were still VERY good seasons, while clearly being taken in a different direction, its not as iconic but still very much SpongeBob. Season 8 and beyond is really when quality starts to diminish, where the characters become parodies of themselves…am I wrong?
i think about the same thing
Squidward died and the modern seasons are hell theory
In my opinion SpongeBob ended the second the original creator died
I wonder what Squidwards voice actor thinks when he goes in the booth and records another episode of being emotionally and physically tormented. If I saw him irl I’d ask him if he cares about that or he doesn’t care because of the money
On a similar note, I wonder how Sponge and Patrick's VAs feel about voicing the various torturer scenes their characters have had over the years. I know they're all professionals, but that's still got to be pretty rough
One thing i hate about modern SpongeBob is kind of a nitpick but it the fact SpongeBob and Patrick now can't stand squidward clarinet which they never had a problem with in the older series
This just depressed me, SpongeBob went from being whimsical and naive, to a complete child-like stalker that is WAY too happy all the time.

It's really sad how much the characters have drifted from their fundamentals. You'd think the writers would listen to feedback, but alas.

The memory episode doesn’t even make sense. I thought that nobody was supposed to memorize the secret formula. This was mentioned during Sponge out of Water.
This is why I liked Little Yellow Book because after seeing Squidward getting tortured by SpongeBob, I actually rooted for Squidward to be an asshole towards SpongeBob as payback
i hate both SpongeBob and Squidward tortures
bro has a SpongeBob OC
bro has a Spongesona and it’s gas
WHAT SPONGEBOB ISINT SUPPOSED TO KNOW THE KRABBY PATTIE FORMULA!!!!
To be entirely fair on Gary acting as a guard dog, cats have been shown to be EXTREMELY protective of their less "capable" humans, when they've actually bonded, such as famously an instance of a cat jumping a loose dog who attacked the family toddler. And we're not talking a small breed here, the cat basically went full honeybadger and squared up against something bigger than it with zero hesitation and won... Also using someone's pool without asking is mega-creepy and Gary's probably smart enough to recognize that (being that he's significantly smarter than Spongebob and possibly a cosmic entity).
modern Spongebob is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine ! It cheers me up with all the bright colors and randomness. It has saved me through a lot of dark times.

The funniest part is that the episode "Mandatory Music" from this exact same season did Squidward torture right, yet none of the other episodes could get it right.
When I watched the new episodes, compared to the olds, I feel like SpongeBob is being very "affectionated" with Squidward than before...

Not So Luck is an average Squidward Tortilla episode.
Squidward is a grumpy jerk sure, but what made his harm funny is when he actually deserved it! Now he’s tortured for simply just existing and it makes you feel horrible for the guy!
14:10 I actually had a cat that would attack strangers but was super sweet on people she knew. Like, she if she didnt know them she would bolt towards them, climb up their body, and scratch the crap out of their face. She was a rescue, and by that I mean my mom foumd her living in a hole on the country club she did landscaping for.
Man I miss when the characters actually acted like adults. Now all of them are stupid, irrational, and only do stuff to make more money for the show.
SpongeBob was never that likeable. But at least he didn't treat Squidward as bad as the newer seasons. They really need to axe this show already.
Season 1-3 spongebib used to be good but after steven hillenburg passed away the show went downhill quick especially in season 7 my 3 least favorite squidward torure episodes would be ink lemonade friendaversy and good neighbors
The squidward sick day one is just a portrayal of the American working life
Nick really teached spongebob in the wrong way
At this point its just leading to a squidward villain arc..
Hey look! You’re back! :D
14:00 They actually found a way to make Gary unlikable
Squidward has become butters
16:44 That's what I miss about the newer episodes. The awareness that Spongebob and Patrick used to have. I can definitely see Patrick breaking the crank in the older seasons, but he would be aware that he fucked up. And even if not, then Spongebob would certainly be aware of it as soon Patrick shows him the crank.
In an older episode they would probably run around the rope drum in panik, not knowing what they should do and then actually try everything to stop it.
I actually think that seasons 9b-12 treated Squidward better, there were a couple of episodes where it wasn't SpongeBob and Patrick bothering him for 11 minutes, and the torture episodes had been toned down, with only a couple around (Bunny Hunt, Ink Lemonade, Squid's On A Bus, Jolly Lodgers), and some of them were justified, Life Insurance and Sportz? are the best example of that, but in season 13 it has no justification Squidward is tortured again to generate humor, the only one I liked was Swimming Fools just because I felt that it was deserved, the rest of the episodes of Squidward Torture of season 13 are terrible, Friendiversary is the one that disappointed me most because it was an episode that had a lot of potential to focus on the relationship between SpongeBob and Squidward, but was wasted by focusing on nostalgia and making it just another SpongeBob episode bothering Squidward, which is why I wasn't bothered by the fact that Squidward wanted to erase his memories.
Season 13 has been a mixed bag

I swear, if Squidward would ever have a comeback and get revenge just like in opposite day where he does and rarely gets his revenge, with good reason and intention too.. I miss that era.
I haven’t watch South Park, but what makes Kenny torture so much better than Squidward torture
Kenny dying is a running gag. It typically doesn’t take up an entire episode of just Kenny being tortured and maimed. The fact that there is essentially an entire genre of episode where the central premise is Squidward being tortured for 11 minutes implies that maybe it’s overdone *juuuuuust* a tad.
It’s a gag that usually doesn’t take more than a few minutes from an episode, squidward torture is the episode….
theres actually in lore reasons for it
@@ThatOneGuy-dc2xe south park is an adult show and the joke is being awful and disgusting. So it isn't a good comparison.

It does make sense that squidward would wanted the pool of SpongeBob's, but wouldn't want tot tell spongebob or him to know about it! But at least he was honest about it at the end!
Having this deep of a level of empathy for a fictional cartoon character is crazy. Good video though.
If i cant even feel emotions for any fictional media thats designed to make us feel emotions then i dont know why make any fictional media at all
I will say it is established in at least one other episode that garry doesn't like squidward and will attack him. The one where squidward gets stuck in cement
This is becoming body horror
In the old episodes squidward did bad things and had bad things happen to him. New ones feel like he is assumed bad, because he is squidward, so violence is inherently justified...

Modern Squidward's anger issue makes me very annoying!
Why do the episode writers keep writing Squidware torture episodes? What is it about that trope that they find so enthralling? Do they write these types of episodes because they think the audience enjoys them? If so, what segment of the audience likes them? Do young children like them and find them funny? I'm struggling to understand.
People will make fun of me for watching it in the first place but this exact torture is why i can't watch annoying orange anymore. Because if any you don't know, there is a character called pear that is exactly pinpoint squidward and he gets tortured EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
