The fact that Nickelodeon came up with an episode where Squidward "deserves" to get tortured because he took a mental health day off from work says a lot about the working environment at Nickelodeon, which we all know is awful anyway, thanks to the Dan Schnieder info that came out recently. Not a good look for the company.

One thing i hate about modern SpongeBob is kind of a nitpick but it the fact SpongeBob and Patrick now can't stand squidward clarinet which they never had a problem with in the older series
At this point, I probably wouldn’t blame Squidward if he had Spongebob killed or something. Him having his back in a moment like Pizza Delivery would feel even less sense nowadays
I wonder what Squidwards voice actor thinks when he goes in the booth and records another episode of being emotionally and physically tormented. If I saw him irl I’d ask him if he cares about that or he doesn’t care because of the money
On a similar note, I wonder how Sponge and Patrick's VAs feel about voicing the various torturer scenes their characters have had over the years. I know they're all professionals, but that's still got to be pretty rough

SpongeBob tortures Squidward so badly that he wants to move out permanently and leave Bikini Bottom for good, but SpongeBob would continuously stalk him to force him to move back next to him so the torture can continue and SpongeBob would make sure Squidward can never move out
@@TheAnimatior1996Nah bro spongebob has been rotting. It's to be expected w a show this old. It does have some good jokes that I do enjoy, but you cannot defend those foot-narwal ppl 😂😂
Then why were people like “SpongeBob is good again hooray!” But now ever since this dude created his channel, People held up their pitchforks and hate on the poor show. Sure, people have opinions but jeez.
While watching "Little Yellow Book"... Everyone: "I hate Squidward for reading Spongebob's diary." Me: "I'd say Spongebob deserved it after invading Squidward's privacy numerous times, along with other atrocities."
Modern Spongebob can be summed up as horrible people being horrible people to one another (sometimes without realization) and ONLY Squidward getting punished for it.
Probably the coldest take ever but I‘ve always hated the torture episodes, no matter who was the target. I just felt super bad for the characters and couldn‘t understand how someone could think it‘s funny to see someone in physical and emotional pain.
Im honestly flabbergasted. I never knew other SpongeBob fans considered the start of the shows “dark era” beginning with season six. I always thought the eighth season is when it went down hill. Like obviously the classics are 1-4 (it’s the reason damn near every frame becomes a meme) but I always thought 5-7 were still VERY good seasons, while clearly being taken in a different direction, its not as iconic but still very much SpongeBob. Season 8 and beyond is really when quality starts to diminish, where the characters become parodies of themselves…am I wrong?
I always thought after season 8 it was the dark era, seasons 6,7 and 8 are still pretty good. Even that one episode in season 8 with the golfing and destroying squidwards house, that was actually funny.
This is why I liked Little Yellow Book because after seeing Squidward getting tortured by SpongeBob, I actually rooted for Squidward to be an asshole towards SpongeBob as payback
This just depressed me, SpongeBob went from being whimsical and naive, to a complete child-like stalker that is WAY too happy all the time. SpongeBob has been on air FOR WAY TOO DAMN LONG!!!! NICK, CANCEL THIS SHOW *NOW!!!!!*
@diegobob278 This channel primarily criticizes Spongebob, especially Modern era, you could say the same thing to Awe about ignoring the series when it comes too something like that. But it's what he is dedicated to and what his audience is as well, so there will be comments like this that criticize or complain about it to since that's just too be expected.
16:44 That's what I miss about the newer episodes. The awareness that Spongebob and Patrick used to have. I can definitely see Patrick breaking the crank in the older seasons, but he would be aware that he fucked up. And even if not, then Spongebob would certainly be aware of it as soon Patrick shows him the crank. In an older episode they would probably run around the rope drum in panik, not knowing what they should do and then actually try everything to stop it.
The memory episode doesn’t even make sense. I thought that nobody was supposed to memorize the secret formula. This was mentioned during Sponge out of Water.
Saying that newer seasons don't have Squidward TP (abbreviated due to yt politics) is ignoring the giant laser-eyed elephant in the room. INK LEMONADE. An episode entirely dedicated in making him suffer. For no reason. Patrick became a psychopath. For no reason.
Most positive? Understatement of the century 😂😂😂 It's really sad how much the characters have drifted from their fundamentals. You'd think the writers would listen to feedback, but alas.
@@oatmeal3013 That's true. Quality in creative works is complex. Hillenburg was on point when he originally said he didn't want SpongeBob to be on the air for too long. Most of the original team wouldn't have left if there was still a genuine passion to keep going.
I swear, if Squidward would ever have a comeback and get revenge just like in opposite day where he does and rarely gets his revenge, with good reason and intention too.. I miss that era.
14:10 I actually had a cat that would attack strangers but was super sweet on people she knew. Like, she if she didnt know them she would bolt towards them, climb up their body, and scratch the crap out of their face. She was a rescue, and by that I mean my mom foumd her living in a hole on the country club she did landscaping for.
modern Spongebob is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine ! It cheers me up with all the bright colors and randomness. It has saved me through a lot of dark times.
Squidward is a grumpy jerk sure, but what made his harm funny is when he actually deserved it! Now he’s tortured for simply just existing and it makes you feel horrible for the guy!
To be entirely fair on Gary acting as a guard dog, cats have been shown to be EXTREMELY protective of their less "capable" humans, when they've actually bonded, such as famously an instance of a cat jumping a loose dog who attacked the family toddler. And we're not talking a small breed here, the cat basically went full honeybadger and squared up against something bigger than it with zero hesitation and won... Also using someone's pool without asking is mega-creepy and Gary's probably smart enough to recognize that (being that he's significantly smarter than Spongebob and possibly a cosmic entity).
SpongeBob's quote at 2:24 is downright creepy and makes him seem more like an obsessive stalker than the lovable goof we once knew and loved. The secret formula being erased with SpongeBob's memory seems like too much of a plot contrivance, more so as it's a well known fact that SpongeBob is NOT the only person who knows the formula, Mr. Krabs keeps it locked up in his vault. Looking back at The Seaman SpongeBob Haters' Club likewise, its biggest issue is that, on the surface, it appears to be an "Unreliable narrator" situation, with each character exaggerating each story they tell, but instead....each story is completely and utterly true. Not only does this make no sense, but it makes SpongeBob look completely out of character!
Now i understand why Squidward was avoiding Spongebob like the plague. Spongebob was secretly a psychopath. 14:17 Actually believe it or not, there are cats that can be pretty agressive too. There was once a news post where a cat protected his home from a robber. And other one where a cat protected her owner's kid from some big ctocodiles. Cats can also hunt snakes too. So there are cases but very rare. Especially for house cats that mainly live in houses.
The funniest part is that the episode "Mandatory Music" from this exact same season did Squidward torture right, yet none of the other episodes could get it right.
1:30 Alright, hot take but haphazardly erasing someone's memory without his consent after breaking into his house IS doing something. It's a bad episode but the whole "squidward is completely innocent" perspective falls flat in that regard. Also, Swimming Fools isn't really a squidward torture. There wasn't anything stopping him from coming clean in the entire episode, and he got to use it for a whole night before he turned himself into a pool toy and let himself be used for whatever reason (weird writer fetish stuff idk.) Even that drop at the end only amounted to being a belly flop which felt much less deliberate than other cases of squidward torture. Getting hit by dirt and a shovel doesn't qualify for "squidward torture," and definitely not on the level of getting an urchin shoved down your throat like in sick daze.
I actually think that seasons 9b-12 treated Squidward better, there were a couple of episodes where it wasn't SpongeBob and Patrick bothering him for 11 minutes, and the torture episodes had been toned down, with only a couple around (Bunny Hunt, Ink Lemonade, Squid's On A Bus, Jolly Lodgers), and some of them were justified, Life Insurance and Sportz? are the best example of that, but in season 13 it has no justification Squidward is tortured again to generate humor, the only one I liked was Swimming Fools just because I felt that it was deserved, the rest of the episodes of Squidward Torture of season 13 are terrible, Friendiversary is the one that disappointed me most because it was an episode that had a lot of potential to focus on the relationship between SpongeBob and Squidward, but was wasted by focusing on nostalgia and making it just another SpongeBob episode bothering Squidward, which is why I wasn't bothered by the fact that Squidward wanted to erase his memories.
@@StevenJones851 More than a mixed bag, I feel like I fail more, there are more negative things in the season that I have already mentioned, and it makes me consider it on par with season 7
Kenny dying is a running gag. It typically doesn’t take up an entire episode of just Kenny being tortured and maimed. The fact that there is essentially an entire genre of episode where the central premise is Squidward being tortured for 11 minutes implies that maybe it’s overdone *juuuuuust* a tad.
Firstly, Kenny torture was there since the first episode so there was no flanderization or pre-torture character to look back on. Secondly, it always takes like 30 seconds instead of a whole episode.
We get it Why can they just leave poor Squidward alone and eaither have his dreams come true or have him move on with his life move away and just get a new job I feel bad for Squidward
I think the reason the Post-Hillenberg era gets away with it is because they never get gruesome like the Dark Era did, nor get too psychological. But the basic flaws of an STP remain in the Post-Hillenberg, and the Dark Era ones were actually more interesting to view and critique.
I am really happy that I quit the show after season 12. The lack of Stephen Hillenbergs involvement shows. Even in seasons 9b-12 for the most part you can say theirs some justification. I say for the most part cause we all know how bad inc lemonade is. Hillenbergs lack of involvement in seasons 4-9A is noticeable and now it’s that with over the top wacky moments
Why do the episode writers keep writing Squidware torture episodes? What is it about that trope that they find so enthralling? Do they write these types of episodes because they think the audience enjoys them? If so, what segment of the audience likes them? Do young children like them and find them funny? I'm struggling to understand.
I will say it is established in at least one other episode that garry doesn't like squidward and will attack him. The one where squidward gets stuck in cement
Honestly, I’m surprised that squidward has been through so much but hasn’t done anything about it, like get a therapist or put a restraining order against everyone who treats him like an ass

The golden age actually warned us about “Dirty Dan”. What a fall from grace:
Soon, Squidward is going to end up like Kenny.
Kenny??

One thing i hate about modern SpongeBob is kind of a nitpick but it the fact SpongeBob and Patrick now can't stand squidward clarinet which they never had a problem with in the older series
At this point, I probably wouldn’t blame Squidward if he had Spongebob killed or something. Him having his back in a moment like Pizza Delivery would feel even less sense nowadays
Yeah unfortunately
I wonder what Squidwards voice actor thinks when he goes in the booth and records another episode of being emotionally and physically tormented. If I saw him irl I’d ask him if he cares about that or he doesn’t care because of the money
On a similar note, I wonder how Sponge and Patrick's VAs feel about voicing the various torturer scenes their characters have had over the years. I know they're all professionals, but that's still got to be pretty rough
Squidward's screams at the pool are actually scary, what the hell.
Right?? The music doesn’t fit, either! I wonder how Roger Bumpass feels about this whole plottline that just needs to DIE??
Give a time stamp bruh
16:05 and 17:04 , 17:16
I was gonna comment some smart essay-like reply but I can’t really put my thoughts into words so I’ll just say this: It sounds _too_ genuine compared to the old screaming. Think back to the old “My Leg!” gag and compare it to how it is now. It’s exactly like that
SpongeBob tortures Squidward so badly that he wants to move out permanently and leave Bikini Bottom for good, but SpongeBob would continuously stalk him to force him to move back next to him so the torture can continue and SpongeBob would make sure Squidward can never move out
Modern spongebob is just so mean spirited and cruel.
Very reflective of the people that run this show now.

Squidward is up there with Kenny and Meg in most tortured characters in media at this point.
Megward the Wizard
The saddest part is iirc Family Guy started toning it down
Then family guy decided to tone down her mistreatment, not SpongeBob.. yet
At least Kenny takes W's too, like scaring his parents into being less abusive towards him and his siblings as his Mysterion persona.

I don’t think squidward would have snuck into spongebobs pool. Instead I think he’d be the type to build a fancier pool in his own yard. 17:44
Modern Spongebob can be summed up as horrible people being horrible people to one another (sometimes without realization) and ONLY Squidward getting punished for it.
Kid family guy
In my opinion SpongeBob ended the second the original creator died
Probably the coldest take ever but I‘ve always hated the torture episodes, no matter who was the target. I just felt super bad for the characters and couldn‘t understand how someone could think it‘s funny to see someone in physical and emotional pain.
Same except if its Mr crabs getting tortured lol
how about if the character deserves it
@@Retro_Edits763 In the context of the episode?
Yeah as a kid I hated that trope so much and it was prevalent in so many cartoons
Cold take… thats new
Im honestly flabbergasted. Season 8 and beyond is really when quality starts to diminish, where the characters become parodies of themselves…am I wrong?
i think about the same thing
I always thought after season 8 it was the dark era, seasons 6,7 and 8 are still pretty good. Even that one episode in season 8 with the golfing and destroying squidwards house, that was actually funny.
This is why I liked Little Yellow Book because after seeing Squidward getting tortured by SpongeBob, I actually rooted for Squidward to be an asshole towards SpongeBob as payback
Snails in Sponge Bob are a weird cross between snails, cats, dogs, and other things as well. They meow, but they have a lot of dog tendencies.

@diegobob278 well 9 seasons was enough for me but thoughts respected.
It's like they're making karma stories without putting the bad thing first
16:44 That's what I miss about the newer episodes.

Maybe Gary is still mad at Squidward for what he did to him in Season 11
@diegobob278 of course not that episode is the reason why Gary hates Squidward
The memory episode doesn’t even make sense. I thought that nobody was supposed to memorize the secret formula. This was mentioned during Sponge out of Water.
This is even worse when you consider the fact that the oil bucket scene from "Just One Bite" was banned way back when for being too gruesome...
18:05 - It would be a "you like krabby paddies don't you squidward" moment
Speaking of that, it would also be like Squidward getting tortured for secretly liking krabby paddies.

Understatement of the century 😂😂😂
It's really sad how much the characters have drifted from their fundamentals. You'd think the writers would listen to feedback, but alas.
yeah they flanderized everybody
it's not the writers not listening, it's the executives and shareholders puppeting them that won't listen.
if it was as simple as letting writers write good things, a lot of media would be better.
The only one of these episodes I've seen is Plane to Sea. I agree it was watchable. Friendiversary looks like nostalgia bait trash.

SpongeBob and Patrick's characters have been completely ruined again, as they're now ruining everyone's lives, not just Squidward's
Gary attacking even though hes a "cat" IS the joke.
Also there are attack cats sometimes.
When I watched the new episodes, compared to the olds, I feel like SpongeBob is being very "affectionated" with Squidward than before...
bro has a Spongesona and it’s gas
Bye Squidward!😃👋
Bye Mr Krabs!😃👋
Bye Squidward 😏👋
Here lies squidward
Now i understand why Squidward was avoiding Spongebob like the plague. Spongebob was secretly a psychopath.
14:17 Actually believe it or not, there are cats that can be pretty agressive too. There was once a news post where a cat protected his home from a robber. And other one where a cat protected her owner's kid from some big ctocodiles. Cats can also hunt snakes too. So there are cases but very rare. Especially for house cats that mainly live in houses.
I read the title as Squidward won't stop torturing Squidward
15:32
Welcome to another episode of "Writer's poorly hidden fetish"-
The funniest part is that the episode "Mandatory Music" from this exact same season did Squidward torture right, yet none of the other episodes could get it right.
I wish there was a role reversal where Soongebob suffers instead
that one episode when Sandy is about to hibernate and drags SpongeBob into doing tons of painful stuff actually makes me feel better now
SpongeBob was never that likeable. But at least he didn't treat Squidward as bad as the newer seasons. They really need to axe this show already.
Considering how bad NickeIodeon has become, shouId we reaIIy be surprised that Squidward *stiII* doesn't take the break he deserves?
Nick really teached spongebob in the wrong way
The "squidward torture" was justified in Swimming Fools, except for the very ending
Season 13 has been a mixed bag
@@StevenJones851 More than a mixed bag, I feel like I fail more, there are more negative things in the season that I have already mentioned, and it makes me consider it on par with season 7
@@maxsteellatino3241 nah I'd take this over Season 7 that Season was Terrible this is a improvement more
I haven’t watch South Park, but what makes Kenny torture so much better than Squidward torture
It’s a gag that usually doesn’t take more than a few minutes from an episode, squidward torture is the episode….
theres actually in lore reasons for it
@@ThatOneGuy-dc2xe south park is an adult show and the joke is being awful and disgusting. So it isn't a good comparison.
Look how they massacred my boy
At this point its just leading to a squidward villain arc..
I think the reason the Post-Hillenberg era gets away with it is because they never get gruesome like the Dark Era did, nor get too psychological. But the basic flaws of an STP remain in the Post-Hillenberg, and the Dark Era ones were actually more interesting to view and critique.
Season 9 felt promising then it immediately went downhill tbh
Exactly.
Spongebob should have ended when Stephen Hillenburg wanted it to.
9:24 i believe the word you were looking for is “happy go-lucky”
Everyone: Hey, Nickelodeon, can you make a Squidword episode where he doesn't get tortured at all and actually has a good time?
Nickelodeon: No 😀
I am really happy that I quit the show after season 12.
Hey look! You’re back! :D
Why do the episode writers keep writing Squidware torture episodes? What is it about that trope that they find so enthralling? Do they write these types of episodes because they think the audience enjoys them? If so, what segment of the audience likes them? Do young children like them and find them funny? I'm struggling to understand.
Dude take that fish out the voice is fine 😂
Bro let him have his spongesona I want a spongesona
bro has a SpongeBob OC
Wonder if this is how those anti spongebob parents saw classic spongebob
probably, classic spongebob was gory for a children’s cartoon of its time
Spongebob and Squidward torture is like the Mario & Luigi series and its strange hatred of Luigi

Heck, it might even be worse because Squidward atleast back then did something to make it justified. Pear never deserved any torture at all.
He got his birthday present destroyed, got embrassed in front of his crush/best friend causing her to never show up again and for the physical torture he gets squashed, ripped, set on fire and if i listed everything he got physically tortured by it would be long.
