whenever i get into a song of his i'm convinced its the best song i've ever heard, then i find another song of his and that one becomes the best song i've ever heard. It's a nice cycle.
It's the Isbell cycle. I've yet to find another artist who has the ability to incapacitate me in less than 4 minutes so fucking often. He's a master. We're lucky we live in the same timeline as him.
Im at that exact stage with this song right now. "Last of my kind" is what sold me on him and over the last year or so i find another song that i think can't be topped.
Every. God. Damned. Song of his has an epic fucking line. Discovered him a few years back and played everything he's ever done in a constant loop. About a year later I started listening to different stuff off and on. Now i can't wait for a new album.
Super late to the Jason Isbell party. Beyond late. Now that I'm here, I'm not leaving. Found this song while trying to find one of my fave DBT tunes. DBT who? Yah, I'm hooked.
Damn, it’s now Aug of 2020, and “I ain’t really falling asleep, I’m fading to black” remains one of my favorite lyrics of all time! Jason looks like shit here, but still performs like he’s heaven sent. I know I’m partial, but his would be the first face on a Mt. Rushmore of this generation’s songwriters. He can say so much in very few words & can lyrically paint a picture that creates a picture of the song & leave you feeling like you’ve actually watched a video.
He's in rough shape here and in the midst of his battle with alcoholism/addiction but as always he put on an amazing show and every word came right from his heart. He's been sober for years now and Amanda Shires killed his goddamn lonely love.
I wish this Jason never got married. We would have gold sad tunes for years to come. No matter how unlikable he becomes, I still respect the man. I hate liking him sometimes.
I'm jealous. So jealous! What... 25 people in the audience? Wow.. Imagine being in that audience, with that acoustic guitar, that song, that lyric, that talent?!! Sooooooo jealous! Wish I was there!!
This song made me a DbT fan, and a fan of all that followed. I bought some of their discs, largely because I wanted to update my musical tastes in my mid 40s, and on my way to the checkout with Killers and My chemical Romance CDs, I saw the Gangstabilly cd, with the hilarious poster art and bought it. Real good, Steve McQueens a cool song. So I bought some more from amazon, and ripped to my iPod. So, I’m raking the lawn and this came on, and I’m standing there thinking about the girl, and the motel room in Wyoming, when I was wild, and who I became, hitting replay over again. Just standing there with my rake for 20 minutes. I’ve been a huge fan since.
Agree with you. This is THE definitive version of this tune… done at the height of his personal struggle. You can’t sing that darkness… you feel it and bleed it.
I love and miss THIS Jason. This is the guy that blew my mind when I first found him. He’ll always be amazing, but THIS Jason will always be my all time favorite
This makes me sad and happy at the same time. To know that he was in such a bad place when he wrote this song and when this was recorded. Its great seeing him now, he looks so much healthier.
Late to the party. Discovered this song from an unlikely source ... the TV series "Billions". Kudos to the music director at Showtime network. Mesmerizing.
I sit here, astounded, watching Isbell play this beautiful song in completely stunned disbelief. I've heard a few of his songs and thoroughly enjoyed them but, truth be told, I had never delved deeply enough into his catalog or other works for that matter. I stumbled across this song sometime last year and fell in love with it. I was bored tonight, waiting for my friends to hop on discord, when I decided to look up a live performance of the song only to fine Mr. Isbell upon a stage performing it. I was blown away, and after a quick googling, to confirm the truths my eyes were seeing, I've fallen for this song even more. So freaking cool lol
Holy shit - this song is sad, beautiful and awesome all in one - nearly cried on first hearing - on second listen I did cry. Gonna have to learn this acoustic version for open mics 🎶🎙🎸🍺
I know it's two years after the fact, but I was thinking the exact same thing. It's heartbreaking that such an insanely talented dude turned out to be such a world class prick.
It's amazing to compare this to versions from just two years later after rehab. I know some people put the tortured artist on a pedestal, but I prefer an artist who sounds - and is - healthy.
Certainly one of the best country pop rock songs I've heard. I like so few songs from country land. Sometimes a Neil Young song. Justine Townes Earl and a couple other.
I love how when he got kicked out of drive by truckers he went on a road trip through the South on his motorcycle. Visiting girls he met on the road. Drinking like a fish I imagine. Sounds super romantic to me. Glad he sobered up though.
I think is one of the best songs ever wrote I think of my wife over seas she's a captain in the military this is for my soulmate and beautiful wife Paula niccum I love u honey
I don’t really know how I’d type tabs out on here but I can explain it. From the A minor chord strike the D string and slide down to the 7th, then hit the d string, b string, d again then G. Then take your ring finger and strike the 8th fret of the low e, then d and G again then using the resonance from the low e slide back up with your ring finger to the root of the g on the 3rd fret of the low e
Sounds great to me. Can't wait to see him in concert at a small theater in August. What brand of a guitar is he playing? Anybody know? Sure sounds good to me.
@@jasonisbell7390 Going through a probable breakup now and learning this song on my Taylor is way better for me than our couples therapist. That Cm cuts me to the marrow. Thank you. I'll take all of what you got.
Even Amanda couldn't fix this. Sadness fills the void.
whenever i get into a song of his i'm convinced its the best song i've ever heard, then i find another song of his and that one becomes the best song i've ever heard. It's a nice cycle.
Yes!! I went through this same cycle

Know what you mean. Only recently discovered Jason. Incredible songwriter.
Every. God. Damned. Song of his has an epic fucking line. Discovered him a few years back and played everything he's ever done in a constant loop. About a year later I started listening to different stuff off and on. Now i can't wait for a new album.
I ain’t really drowning ‘cause I see the beach from here….what a line about how an addict justifies their self-destruction. “I can quit anytime”.
That’s my favorite line also!
I made my chest hurt remembering doing it just now.

I ain't really falling asleep, I'm just fading to black...
This song helped me through heartbreak in my early twenties. It's like whiskey for your ears.
Super late to the Jason Isbell party. Beyond late. Now that I'm here, I'm not leaving. Found this song while trying to find one of my fave DBT tunes. DBT who? Yah, I'm hooked.
I found this song when I needed it most.
What a gift it is to be able to experience musicians this rare. ❤ I am so grateful for music like this.

Totally agree guy has make a mark on music and the human experience that will outlive us all
Jason was amazing back then, he's amazing now, and I'm so happy that he looks so healthy nowadays. It's a stark difference.
He's in rough shape here and in the midst of his battle with alcoholism/addiction but as always he put on an amazing show and every word came right from his heart. He's been sober for years now and Amanda Shires killed his goddamn lonely love.
Yeah he looked pretty rough back then. It’s amazing how not drinking turns it around.
I wish this Jason never got married. We would have gold sad tunes for years to come. No matter how unlikable he becomes, I still respect the man.
I hate liking him sometimes.
Best show ever
She killed his drive as well. Possibly the best writer of a generation and the marriage ruined everything that we could have held up.
It is amazing what the difference one person can do to change the direction of your life
Here I am again, listening, feeling....
He's an underrated guitar slinger - man's a beast
I'm jealous. So jealous! What... 25 people in the audience? Wow.. Imagine being in that audience, with that acoustic guitar, that song, that lyric, that talent?!! Sooooooo jealous! Wish I was there!!
Very jealous
I was not there!
Jason Isbell is the Bob Dylan of our generation.
That's a bold statement.... and I completely agree
Best country song that could not be played on the radio.
still one of my all time favorites to cry to. damnit Isbell, you got me again.
Jason is something. Wow.
This song made me a DbT fan, and a fan of all that followed. "And everyday theres a little less difference between the two"!!!! Isbell, You know, you just know!!!
Thank you so much I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music 🎶❤️
This is by far my favorite version
Agree with you. This is THE definitive version of this tune… done at the height of his personal struggle. You can’t sing that darkness… you feel it and bleed it.
So much freaking talent..a true artist in every sense of the word...
I hope all his fans get the privilege to see this performance! This says so much brother. God bless Jay!
I've had enough heartbreak for a lifetime. Luckily, Jason keeps putting out more soundtrack for it so I got that going for me. Which is good.
I’m sorry ...💔 I can relate . ♥️🙏🏻
Boy, if this song didn’t get me through a rough patch back in the early 10’s!
beautiful haunting song....I could listen to it all day long
He decorates time wonderfully.
The suns a desperate star, that burns like every single one before.
Wow , I don't have words for those people that gave this video a thumbs down . Amazing song by the best songwriter of our generation .
Stop me if you heard this one before , “ man walks into a bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor” WOW!
That line is in 2different songs. Wonder who wrote it in both of em?
I love and miss THIS Jason. This is the guy that blew my mind when I first found him. He’ll always be amazing, but THIS Jason will always be my all time favorite
Best songwriter of his generation. Married man. Saved 🙏
This makes me sad and happy at the same time. To know that he was in such a bad place when he wrote this song and when this was recorded. Its great seeing him now, he looks so much healthier.
just love this sooooooooooooooooooooo much
I'm so frickin happy he picked up a guitar years ago

Damn brother!! Love the hell outta this tune
God Damn I'm feeling it.. amazing 🎶
Holy hell this guy is amazing I can’t believe I’m just finding him now thanks to Morgan’s cover of cover me up
Enjoy discovering more of his songs - he’s such an amazing songwriter & performer ☺️
His best song for me but there are so many old and new.
this guy. even sings flat at "belly up.." and I love it.
Now we got money, but we used to have raw passion. What a beautiful song!
I sooooo love this, Drive By Truckers were/are such a favorite and Jason soooooo talented.
For me, this is where he peaked. You suffer for your passion and he certainly did.
I miss you, Hailey. I hope our story isn’t over. But if it is, just know you were my favorite chapter…
I always rewind to when he sings "I got green and I got blues" because I get goosebumps 😢
wicked good one Jason!!!!!!

go down to the seventh fret and play around on the a and d string to get that 00.18 riff
love Jason isbell
Thank you so much I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music 🎶❤️
So damn good!!!
What a voice
Incredible rendition!
What a great song and voice. Excellent! Jeff McGuire sent me here. lol
Combine the writing and this performance and you have Jason's best.

Mic control is insane
Hell yeah!
Damn... too good.

This song changed my life.
i cry to this song

4:08 - He sounds like he's about to start crying there ...
“ I ain’t really drowning because I see the beach from here”

Jason is sooo goddamn great, can anyone tell me , what guitar his playing, it just sounds so goddamn beautiful
Torben Frost - I believe it’s his Baxendale (made by Scott Baxendale out of Athens, GA).
Hotdamn
I'm in love
Try listening to Memory Motel by The Rolling Stones after This. Green and Blues"
5 years old and less then 15k likes - You ppl make me sick
a year later and its still only 2.7k??...fuck you all
Maaan... do I want to sing with you! And our voices sound nice together too :) (I'm singing away here haha)
😭😭😭😭
👍👍
Hits me like a Mac truck
Amanda? Where are you? This boy needs saving.
Great song. Great cover!
😭
Does anyone know what guitar he played back then? I see this one in a bunch of videos and I’ve been trying to find out what it is and I cant
Wondering the same. Did you find out?
WorshipTeam man I sure didn’t. I’ve looked and looked, I can’t find it anywhere! Could it maybe be a custom model?
Custom Baxendale Koa Jumbo?
I live in Texarkana. These motels are hella nasty.
Who are the two jackasses that didn't like this?
idiots not worth the mention my friend...
Nickelback fans lol.
Could anyone tab the riff at 0:18 please?
I don’t really know how I’d type tabs out on here but I can explain it. From the A minor chord strike the D string and slide down to the 7th, then hit the d string, b string, d again then G. Then take your ring finger and strike the 8th fret of the low e, then d and G again then using the resonance from the low e slide back up with your ring finger to the root of the g on the 3rd fret of the low e
I also forgot to mention after you strike the low E on the 8th fret pick up your middle finger from the D string and strike d and g open
Sounds great to me. Can't wait to see him in concert at a small theater in August. What brand of a guitar is he playing? Anybody know? Sure sounds good to me.
He's loves old Martins... I've never seen him play an acoustic orher than Martin
It's a Baxendale custom guitar.
Drive by truckers not the same without jason.
I saw them last summer and couldn't agree more. They were still a good show, but not the same without him.
This song was meant for acoustic guitar and voice, this recording totally obliterates the album version.
Golly
Stop me if you heard before a man walks into bar and leaves before his ashes hit the floor

Thank you so much I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music 🎶❤️
