“In real life these things dont happen much at all, its too bad we all live the dream”. Remarkable lyricism

John mayer said it best "he lives at a level where even great writers can only visit"

      Lived*
I would argue the Jason Isbell we see today couldn't hold a candle to the Jason up to the Southeastern era.

Man I can’t get over this specific rendition of this song. When he says “but it was never enough.” Just gives me chills every time man. This is one of the best videos of this song being played by him for sure.

I'm with you, man. I've searched far and long for one better and I just can't find it. The passion and vulnerability cannot be surpassed. This entire set is wonderful.

Amen. I find myself repeatedly coming back to this set at Paste. He does an incredible version of "Streetlights" as well. A true master.

It’s crazy how one guitar and one singer can wake up such an emotion
This song and especially this version is one of the if not the best songs I’ve heard to ever exist💯

Not sure I’ve ever heard Jason sing like this before or since. Incredible voice to match those other-worldly lyrics 💙

This song is SOOO freaking good. Wow. That this isn’t being played on the radio in place of the rest of that pop-country garbage is a crime.

This version is much better than the commercial recordings of this song. Isbell's Voice is what makes this song so good and you hear it here in a much last cluttered arrangement. His acoustic guitar is the perfect accompaniment too.

Disagree. I love the entire "Here We Rest" album. But I have a pretty dope sound system, at home and in my car. Not said as a diss, truly. Just thinking that may have something to do with how its heard. I have to have the vocalist front and center in everything I listen to and his is on this entire album.

This is one of my absolute faves of his. Tho of course it's hard to whittle the list down ; ). And LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THIS ROOM!!!! Good grief. The words. The voice. The power, the hurt, the resilience. Seems had I been able to see him perform this in such a small space, it would be a memory for a lifetime. Thanks to whomever recorded and posted.
