Space Jam is Stupid! - Talking About Tapes

- Tony with Johanna and Sean (from Movie Dumpster) review Space Jam. In this Podcast / Movie Review of this relic from the 90s they talk about all the things that make it stupid. Like the weird crossover between the NBA and the Loony Tunes, the bizarre premise of Aliens and cartoons playing basketball, and the rampant product placement.
Swackhammer (Danny DeVito), an evil alien theme park owner, needs a new attraction at Moron Mountain. When his gang, the Nerdlucks, heads to Earth to kidnap Bugs Bunny (Billy West) and the Looney Tunes, Bugs challenges them to a basketball game to determine their fate. The aliens agree, but they steal the powers of NBA basketball players, including Larry Bird and Charles Barkley -- so Bugs gets some help from superstar Michael Jordan.

Thanks to Tony for having me on again and thanks to Johanna for tolerating my bad Seinfeld references. Next time I'm on I'll wear a shirt that fits better, but I had to wear a little Space Jam gear to get into the mood (and it was the only one I could find)! Check out our channel if you get a chance too, we've even got episodes with Tony and Newt guesting on and Kieran and Justin! -Sean
I remember this movie when I was a kid in the 90s it’s a big part of my childhood.
I watched it a ton as a kid and have a lot of fond memories of it, even if it doesn't hold up great 25 years later. I still like it. -Sean
easily one of my favorite movies
Space jam is one of those guilty pleasure films that you have to go back and rewatch every now and then.
Flash Gordon is a guilty pleasure. Death Wish 3 is a guilty pleasure. Space Jam is just objectively not good.
I have the vhs, DVD, and soundtrack. The soundtrack lives in my car lol
Compared to the new one, this version looks like Godfather 1 and 2.
Is it just popular to hate on Space Jam now? So many channels do it. It's a fun kids movie and as such it holds up. Also, Bill Murray is hilarious in it and it has one of the best soundtracks ever made.
Hated it back in ‘96. Even as a kid I thought the humor was lame.
@@jamesrogers2382 you’re not special
It really is awful. Soundtrack might be okay, don't remember it at all. Bill Murray being good does not redeem this in any way.
@@agent_of_cthulhu 1. You’re opinion isn’t fact, 2. Literally every one else besides you remembers the soundtrack
@@theitfactorjameswheezer2852 calm down. Never said it was fact. God didn't mean to trigger a Space Jam nutcase.
Siskel & Ebert actually loved Space Jam. It may have been Chicago bias, but then again they hated Rodman's movies in the late 90s.
"Cause she looks like a horse!"
Me:*absolutely DYING of laughter*
I always loved space jam. Its not a great film by any measure, but it was fun when i was a kid. The new one looks like a dumpster fire though.
Basketball Jones.
Hit em high.
Fly like an eagle
I believe I can fly.
Happy to see Johanna back!!!
This episode made me realize that the ones with Newt, the movies are just framing devices for him to tell stories about his life. 😂
Took you that long to notice?? Haha
The Basketball Jones scene where all the players are going through therapy, is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history
"Michael Jordan was the Dan Marino of basketball" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is actually my little ones favourite movie and it was mine growing up too.
I look at it now as this 90s time capsule of a family movie from the soundtrack itself, to the casting of Michael Jordan.
Michael Jordan made basketball popular in Australia, so that's important to note.
In a country obsessed with rugby, footy and cricket - he was noticed.
Now LeBron will take the mantle from Michael Jordan and we will see if this movie can translate into a new time period.
I don't believe it can, but I'm curious to see if it can.
No, it really can't. But as someone who also grew up with this film, I guess we're all a *little* curious.
@@tipi5586 so you think LeBron is better than Kobe Bryant even with his 82 point game?
I kinda like your guy's back and forth. Non pretensious, just normal people talking.
Subbed
Michael Jordan would be the only person to get away with showing up to a minor league game in a space ship & everyone there would say, yeah that's fine.
And the Hitlerstache.
@@noplace4akitty047 Don't you dare tell Michael Jordan to shave his VERY stylish mustache. He would take that personally.
Sean looks like one of the guys from "Workaholics."
I actually choked on my coffee when I read this. Good lord man you're right!
I'll take that as a compliment! -Sean
Can you talk about Looney tunes back in action with Brandon Frasier
WHAT HOW COULD YOU HATE SPACE JAM one of the best Sports movie ever
Miserable people who clearly only like bad movies or just want to be the "different" group protesting a movie everyone says is good. They prob hate American Pie cause it's funny too
@@IronWolf277 its Looney tunes and sports what more do you want
@@dwayneelizondomountaindewh6073 never heard of this
@@fuhgetabouthat247 While I love Space Jam from my childhood and liked American Pie at the time, if you go back and watch it... I don't think the humor (besides Eugene Levy) holds up.
@@kyleking8656 it's a looney tunes movie. Eugene levy was the worst part about that movie lol. The movie was showing micheal Jordan deal with personal issues in a way even kids could understand. In a time where everyone wanted to be like Mike, he didn't even want to be himself or feel like himself hence playing baseball and quitting basketball (even tho the league really had to get rid of him for a season instead of fine him and dumn down the image they've created since 1984).
Claims to be a Seinfeld fan and doesn’t think of a Jimmy’s shoes when she says it.
Jimmy doesn't like misunderstanding.
Jimmy and misunderstanding kinda clash.
I kinda wished newt was here 😟
nah i would have been tooooo mean in this one
Lola's design was changed years before space jam 2 was ever a thing
So Batman Forever is fun and this is stupid? Can we get some consistency here?
Can they have some of their own opinions here?
@@SzatanistaDzezowy if you have fun with batman forever and not with space jam, your opinion may be, objectively, skewed. What did Bill Murray do to Tony?
@@lolnahnvm208 I don’t even like Bill Murray, but this movie was alright
Same here
They aren't known for that.
Tony did you get into Newton's sour alcohol stash. You're interrupting Johanna a lot.
Still prefer Back in Action. Probably because the director wasn't fired mid production & knew what he was doing. Plus they got Mel Blanc's understudy Joe Alaskey to play Bugs & Daffy. The film actually feels like live action Looney Tunes movie, instead of a 90 min product placement.
"The planets aligned and space jammed" I love how Johanna dies inside after that line. Awesome episode :)
Woke up saw an episode announced....gonna be a good day.
Come on, Tony! You know you still have those old blip reviews on some old hard drive somewhere! Release the Blip cuts!
The MON-STARS are challenging Micheal Jordan to a basket ball game and he recruits the Hack the Movies crew on his team. I could see Justin, Crystal, and Newt in those Space Jam jerseys.
Can I be the old Lola bunny????
@@Crystalquin Absolutely. We'll make sure not to call you "Doll."
It's rumored that the eyes on the VHS case of Kazaam will follow you all around the store
No pullout for Lola bunny
Spacejam was a pretty good movie.
25:44 - the one white guy is Shawn Bradley who was a serviceable player(not great but not totally bad either)
"I haven't heard anything from R.Kelly in a while. Is he up to anything?"
.........
"So anyway--"
Nothing but quality with this show...
yep.
that was a line in the video.
thanks for transcribing it.
@@cthulhupthagn5771 you're welcome, my guy. ✌️
Yo space jam is great considering it was merging to of the biggest commodities of the the time. There is no way you could please everybody. You were getting a basketball player to interact with characters that weren't even there in green screened environments i think they did great. Story wise it was simple creative and fun sure there are some problems but if your questioning the structure and editing etc.of a movie which also has looney tunes characters aliens and michael jordan then you probably need to just go watch something serious. I dont think this movie was made for film critics lol it was made for fans of both tunes and jordan.
Who ever put that ring on Johannas hand is a smart man.
Johanna, buy the thing Tony was bitching about. Then smash it. Then wrap it. Then give it to him for his bday/Xmas whichever is first.
Absolutely
I love your channel and I really try to accept different opinions but this time I can't help it... I grew up with this silly movie and I still love it, so I hope you won't totally destroy it.
I actually fear the upcoming sequel/reboot because it looks more like a "Ready player one" commercial for Warner Bros than an actual Looney Tunes movie.
P.S. Very funny review XD
Thing is, the movie isnt even that stupid. I watched it recently and it actually has some really clever jokes.
I loved this movie as a kid, but I haven't seen it since I was a little kid. So, I don't know if I would still like it.
1996, jordan was going for his 4th title and I was 12. Damn time flies.
Are you guys ever gonna do cabin in the woods
Space Jam is a crazy flick. I loved it as a kid. Still fun to go back and watch every now and then if I have nothing else better to do.
"Was he alive when the movie came out!?" You're thinking of Gene Siskel-big Chicago Bulls fan-and yes he was. Haha.
My two 7 yr olds love this movie. Talking about Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan 😂😂 they've never seen a basketball game
maybe they will like "looney tunes b ball" a fun snes game like nba jam.
Tony’s announcer voice is great.
Does anyone remember when this movie got a spiritual sequel in 2003? "Looney Tunes: Back In Action"?
Hey i love space jam. 2nd one looks like junk but first one took mj story in the bigs and mixed it with fun
But this is your chance!!! TO DO YOUR DANCE!!! AT THE SPACEEEE JAM!!!!
The plot of Space Jam is actually very structurally sound. Considering its about Looney Tunes.
Space aliens want an attraction for their circus.
They try to kidnap the Looney Tunes because no one would deny that Looney Tunes would be great attractions at a circus.
Looney Tunes challenge aliens to basketball game for their freedom. This makes sense because the aliens are short.
Aliens still talent from professional basketball players.
So now Looney Tunes asks the best basketball player for help.
Im actually impressed by how well the plot in the movie flows. It does not feel contrived. There is a reason for everything.
Roger Rabbit came out 7 years prior, looks better, and so much better acting. not only is Roger Rabbit better, but probably one of my favorite movies.
Now that I think about it, I wonder if they would even cover Cool World.
I might watch it again one day. It's been too long and I doubt it would hold up.
I will note that when I first saw a TV spot for it that I was so turned off by it that I was so dead set against watching it. When my mom rented, my mind changed about it. I don't think it would hold that, but I wouldn't mind watching it again.
The soundtrack to space jam was awesome.
Some kids in the area moved me my brother go over they had the movie. They left it to our house for a year. I must seen space jam so many times.
it has one of the most iconic song
Hack the Movies is totally my new favortie thing. Keep up the good work team!!
This and RedLetterMedia are my two must watch channels.
@@mreddboy Agreed. It took me a minute to get into the worst of the worst bc of the length but like this show Ive actually gotten used to it and find myself coming back day after day watching chunks of the same video. Tony's really grown on me too.
@@MinutzAkira definitely agree. RLM I have to take breaks from. But Tony and the crew are just great. I loved Rental Reviews but if we had to lose it to gain HTM then I’m okay with it!
I was 11 when this came out. I just showed this to my nephews who are 12 and 10. Man, memories came flooding back.
9:26 His dad was shot and killed actually.
Wow had no idea! Just looked it up and what a horrible way to go out. -Sean
If R. Kelly was a basketball player, there would be fewer jokes referencing what he did... Kobe.
I was 15 when this came out.
I was 17 😐

I just went to the Space Jam A New Legacy official website and they totally made it like the original 90s style website!
I think the movie still holds up decently. It isn’t as amazing as it is when you see it the first time as a kid but i think as you get older it becomes harder to be impressed with things. Especially when you’ve seen them already.
The soundtrack, Jordan shoes, and Looney tunes characters are what hold up the movie. MJ is there just being Michael Jordan.
He was one of the most famous people of the 90s. Having him in a movie with cartoon characters was a no brainer at the time.
His acting in the movie wasn’t amazing since you can’t expect an athlete to be on par with the likes of Leo or any High tier movie actors today but even if you think it was bad. There is still more to the movie than just Jordan’s acting.
When you want to enjoy something ghoofy like this. You can’t think too deeply on what makes sense and what doesn’t. Its mean’t to be for fun and it was made in mind for kids.
The white player is Shawn Bradley former 76ers center
Cartoon network in the mid 90s had "June bugs" it was a Bugs bunny marathon in the whole month of June..26 years to this day.
Maybe we watched them on tv, and they were watching us on tv....😲
So Lola goes from handling a huge hog to laying on her back getting a hotdog wiggled in her face. I love Hack The Movies!
One thing this movie gets right - they hired an actual voice actor, the legendary Billy West, to play Bugs Bunny (and other talented voice actors to voice the other Looney Tunes). None of this Chris Pratt and Seth Rogen bullshit.
This was great!
Please review Rochelle, Rochelle next!
I swear i remember Jordan taking part in PGA tours as well
How many zeros are on this check? Yeah, I'll endorse it! It's great!
I see you've discovered the James Cameron method
Loved this as a kid but definitely doesn’t hold up today. The theme tho is hype so amazing, one of my favourite scenes still is the Charles Barkley scene where he doesn’t have his basketball skills and the kids say you’re not Charles Barkley and he’s like shocked lmfao
Chuck Jones actually said once that he and the other original creators never received a dime for any kind of Looney Tunes merchandise or usage in films, etc. So he was well within his right to complain about the movie. What did he have to gain for promoting it?
The Jimmy Choo's joke is underrated.. Johanna is a treasure
Hack the movies bringing up Michael Jordan's bastard son and his gambling problem before they even started talking about the plot of Space Jam, is the reason why I LOVE Hack the Movies!
23:12 Charlie Chaplin was a patter-arse!
🌈 THE MORE YOU KNOW!!!🌟
I have been loving this show so much. All of your guests are great and legit funny. You all seem like people I would enjoy hanging out with IRL. I usually will put off watching 1 hour+ videos but I can't wait for this show to premiere every week! Keep it up!!!
Fun fact mj got cut from his high school team
Sean, my friend, please do a review dressed as beast from the x men.
If Tony does it and will have me, I’ll dress up as Beast in a heartbeat haha! -Sean
I only know who Michael Jordan is because of this movie. If you would ask 5 year old me who Michael Jordan was I would say “the actor from SpaceJam!” because I never watched sports, was never into them lol. I only liked this movie because I loved the Looney Toons.
32:48
What's rental reviews?
I love the original Space Jam.
ok listening to you guys talk about this movie its genius....
Pepe Le Pew only put up 2 points (and that was a dunk) in the first movie. That's why he isn't in the 2nd movie, because he's bum at basketball.
Tony, you mean Dan Marino is the Michael Jordan of football.
I will pray for your safety Tony, Johanna, & Sean.
🙏🙏🙏
I thought this was about the sequel at first. I was in agreement. Then my 90s kid feels were hit. Sacrilege! Lol
I thought Tony was a big Halloween fanatic, but he doesn't talk about it anymore
A film that should have worked for me, as a kid Michael Jordan and loonie toons were at the top of my list but it didn't, i guess it was my first step into adulthood cynicism
Shawn Bradley is the tall white guy.
Great call Tony, I loved Jock Jams too! Hmm, haven't heard that Rock n Rock part 2 in a while I wonder what's up with that, eh I'm sure everything's fine.
The monstars anthem is still the best song ever
I was at the right age for this movie as a kid when it came out but I was such a huge Pistons fan and had such a hatred for MJ that I never have and never will watch it . Funny now because I don't even watch basketball.
I was a huge NBA fan as a kid in the 90s, but I haven't watched basketball since the late 00s, when they changed the rules so that no one can play defense and every other shot became a 3-point attempt.
First saw this move on DVD years after it came out. Enjoyed it for what it was, but I knew it wasn't terribly great.
This is a Charles Barkley movie more than Mike.
Haha would you be able to see the full letter Tune Squad logo on the cartoon characters make this movie any better?
Antonio, this movie is fun.
Please do Looney Tunes back in Action !!!!!! Everyone hates it but I love that movie 😂
You need to do one on Soldier
I rarely see anything about that film and probably the best Paul W S Anderson film of all time. It forgets it’s directed by him during the second act and then says, oh I forgot. Time to be over the top
He’s the big budget Roger Coreman or Lloyd Kaufman
And that’s a term of endearment
I still have the coin that came in the vhs box
I sawl this vide in my recommendations and decided to watch it.
I love Hack The Movies! Beetlejuice next pls!
Michael Jordan went to the Minor League's Birmingham Barons. In the movie and IRL, they played against my local team the Huntsville Stars. The Stars aren't around now and we currently have the Rocket City Trash Pandas (since Rocket City Raccoons would incur the wrath of Disney). Also last time I watched Space Jam, a lot of the golf courses shown supposedly still set around Birmingham in the movie are obviously shot in California since the pine trees in the scenes are not at all southern pines. A bit of local trivia since only a fraction of the film was filmed in Alabama.
I went to see this when it came out and I remember a few guys in the theater laughing way too hard at the Pulp Fiction reference. Like they wanted everyone to know that they were edgy enough to get the joke. I also remember my best friend telling me he didn't like it, which was kinda heartbreaking because as little kids we bonded over Loony Tunes. Great animation though.
Idk if there's any truth to it or it was just Playground rumors but I remember me and my friends talking about how there was supposed to be a space jam for every sport after this movie came out. It was probably just us making things up but still it would have been a cool idea for a franchise
Yeah I saw it myself that Tony Hawk was intrested in making a skate version of SJ . But it never happened.
I had Space Jam on tape when I was a kid and watched it a lot because of it. It was still horrible. Even as a child I disliked it, especially the second half that dragged on and on.
I was a bit surprised when I found out years later that a lot of people see this as a nostalgic classic or whatever. Never thought it was that popular or liked.
