  • Curious to see how that Mason Jar Kratky Hydroponics held up? Well, here's an update!
Kratky is a very simple way to grow vegetables indoors or outdoors. It's relatively inexpensive when you consider most of the items can be used over and over and over again. And, when you compare the price of a packet of seeds to the price of produce at the supermarket you'll really see how good of an investment it is to create even a small Kratky setup.

Looking good Lynn! How long would you say it took for your larger greens to get that size? Is hydroponics quicker than soil? This would make a great project for the long winter ahead!

Hey, I'd say they start fast and by week three they really take off. I've not had any success growing them indoors in soil to this extent.

These updates have been amazing. So will a bigger container produce bigger lettuce?

It seems that the extra room for the roots produces bigger plants but they still won't necessarily get as big as they would outside.

    Great video and so informative.
Are those plants still producing for you? If not, how many months were you able to harvest before you had to toss them.
    Thank you!

Hi, thanks for watching! These produce for a few months. It's a bit warm in the room I have them so they tend to mature faster and I've even had a few start to go to seed. I try to start a new group every 3-4 weeks so as the old ones start get bitter I have new ones getting ready to harvest.
If you use the Rapid Rooter plugs I linked to you'll have an easier time reusing them. The wool ones fall apart quickly.

@@TalesFromtheMutiny Thanks again for educating me on the simplicity of hydroponics. So excited to get this going in MPLS. It appears the Rapid Rooter plugs are made of peat moss. Per your note above about reusing them. Do you simply cut away the roots from the mature plants and then start the new seed within it? Just trying to wrap my head around the reusability of them. Thanks much! Lance

@@lanceleo6460 Actually, the roots pull out fairly easily. The main tap root should come right out as well as some of the smaller ones. I don't worry about getting all of them but I do soak the plugs in a little water and food grade hydrogen peroxide. Then since and let air dry. Just to be sure they are clean.

How much nutrients did you use to start and how long after did you add more and how much? They look great.

Sorry for the delayed response. I used about 1/2 teaspoon in the mason jars. I'm working on an updated Kratky Method video now so I'll be sure to include measurements and more information.

Do you still use the clay pebbles? I noticed in the video there wasn’t any clay pebbles on top of the mason jar.

I do use the clay pebbles now. I learned that they are really used to inhibit the growth of mold and algae by blocking the light. I hope to make an updated video soon.
