    You jumped straight to the plant...how would you do your plant with the rockwool covered? A seed in the rockwool or did you start them separately and put it in the rockwool later? Because you jumped ahead, you also didn't show that the water needs to cover a slight bit of the net jar so that it can wick up at the beginning.

      Another source I saw filled the net pot with clay pebbles then added seeds on top of that. But they don't have roots yet, so how so they get the nutrients? I was watching this video to see if something more is needed but it skips to once the plants are grown.

      You might want to put a rush on it. I just bought these jars at Walmart, $11.98 for a 6 pack. They may still have them as single purchase but, they’re $3.98 each when sold that way. It was the last of them and I think the same 6 pack is $41 on Amazon. But, check online at other stores and set yourself up for Walmart’s in-stock alert.
      I’m just getting started, too and this is the video that has spurred me on as, I’m an apartment dweller and I really ❤️ the black matte chalk paint on them! Good luck!

    Is it necessary to paint the jars with the black chalk paint or is that just decorative? How would you know when the water is empty if you cannot see it? I guess you can pick it up and tell by I would think it would be easier to keep it clear so you can visual see. Is the dark paint conducive to growing the plant?

    • @SoothingLeaf
      @SoothingLeaf  4 года назад +1

      It does not have to be black or chalk paint only. Anything is good to use. The purpose is to prevent light from penetrating into the jar and developing algae. It will not harm plant to much but will steal away all the nutrients for itself. Which harms the plant directly. Best to use anything that will stop lights from entering. Foil works very well and is cheap option. Also double benefit it bounces lights back at plants.

    • @jaceyc6596

    I understand that the black paint is to block the light to prevent algae but I saw someone using aluminum foil warp outside the jar to reflective the light. Which one is better way to do and get the good results? Thanx

    • @SoothingLeaf
      @SoothingLeaf  7 лет назад +6

      They both work well I have used both options in the past but prefer the sleek look of the black jars over the foil (is more of a homemade look) although the foil does reflect the light back up a plus. Painting the jars is time consuming and you have to do several coats of paint with drying in between. Foil is nice a quick to wrap around so another plus. Depends if you want to go with aesthetics or functionality. The black painted jars warm up under the lights and keeps the roots a bit warmer not hot just warm to the touch. It does chip away after a while or if you get jars wet at all find this kind of annoying which is why I may go with a spray paint option next.

    • @bimbogiallo
      @bimbogiallo 5 лет назад

      If the system doesn't lose water by evaporation then the water decreases only if absorbed. When the water falls below the tip of the roots, then the plant will "push" to reach the water again. If you fear the system is not airtight, then you need to constantly check the water level and make sure the roots are slightly below the water level.

    You should let people know that the way you handle the rockwool is not the way it should be done. That stuff is very hazardous to bare skin and the dust off them is on par with fiberglass insulation in the air...

      Hi Tom, you are absolutely right to be concerned about using rock wool. This is one of my earlier videos and I have made a few newer videos discussing the health concerns as well as mold issues. Why I made a switch to coco coir and its benefits and comparisons to rockwool. Now I grow all my plants using strictly coco coir and hydroponic clay pebbles if you look at some of my newer videos. I actually have a new how to video complete step by step guide coming out within the hour hopefully helps someone out there. Thank you for mentioning this important health risk and thanks for watching!

      Not really, it is not. The one used for hydroponics is a little bit different from one you are talking about. It is not industrial grade like one they use for thermal insulation. The one on the video is specially made for hydroponics (hence more expensive) does not produce dust and is made from special volcanic rock not river sand like the fiberglass rockwool for industrial purpose.

      No I simply give the jars a wipe down with a hand towel just to get off any dirt or smudges and then, flip jars upside down and give it 2-3 coats with drying time in between. Although I have noticed painting jars black makes it warm up quite a bit. This causes the reservoir to evaporate much faster. Question 3: some plants will last longer than others, but all plants eventually wither and die
      Question 4: roots systems ar'nt all the same, but most grow as much as they can, then stop, and only rarely outgrow a hydroponic growing space.

      You need something inert. Rock and gravel are fine. Potting mix... And you're just using soil gardening for nutrients and not hydroponics.

    Can you transplant the plants into soil at any point?

    • @SteveD12
      @SteveD12 2 года назад

      I'm new to this but from what I heard on a podcast they aren't great transplanted once the roots get used to half the root taking in air and the rest of the roots taking in the water/fertilizer. Perhaps it'd depend on what you're transplanting though.

  • @spartanray
    @spartanray 5 лет назад +5

    The plant is putting too much of its energy in growing roots than leaves. Perhaps a smaller jar would balance this.

    • @lazyh-online4839
      @lazyh-online4839 4 года назад +8

      The plant will still try to grow it's roots as much as it can, making it grow in a smaller jar won't prevent that, most plants have way bigger root systems than what people realize. Giving your plant a strong root system when it is still young is what gives them a good foundation for stronger healthier growth as the plant matures. If you really wanted to, though, you could carefully pull the plant out and prune the roots to encourage the roots to spread and create more surface area, pulling in more nutrients and water and giving an even healthier plant. This is the concept exploited by fabric grow pots, the root reaches the fabric at the edge and the soil won't maintain it's water content as it's split between evaporating into the air through the fabric and being absorbed by the roots. This stunts the end of the root encouraging the root system to branch out and create more smaller roots. This is called air pruning, if you're that worried about root growth you can prune the roots yourself as mentioned above, to give the plants more nutrients and water for "above ground" growth.

      Not adding fertilizer
      PRO: don't have to buy fertilizer.
      CON: plants don't grow.
      You should really read up on how plants work. They need more than just water...

    • @elijahshay2555
      @elijahshay2555 6 лет назад

      WITHOUT FERTILIZER: All plants can sprout, and grow an inch tall without fertilizer. Certain plants will even thrive for a limited time if they have ample sunlight. After a while the lack of nutrition the plants can get (it sucked the sparse minerals from the water and consumed its endosperm food) begin to slow down, and stall its growth. Then it stops growing completely. They may survive for a while before starting to die. Some plants need very little nutrition and will slowly shrink over time depending on if water and sun are regularly available.
      WITH FERTILIZER: Plants that get access to the nutrients they need are able to grow as big as they can and have energy enough to make fruit or vegetables as well as regrow their leaves so we can pluck those to eat. When a plant has all the nutrition it needs it is healthy and can fight off and survive diseases and regrow damaged parts of itself. Most plants require certain amounts and types of vitamins and minerals to thrive. Fertilizer is the name given to all nutrients that we can give to plants and is a very simple way to get plants what they need to be useful to us.

      Hey Denise Sim it's good to check on the levels but normally every 2 weeks I check the pH and the PPM of each plant. Make changes where needed and leave the rest to grow. I find if you can prevent light from entering your reservoir you won't have any issues with algae or rot.
