This video will teach you how to knit the feather and fan lace stitch. The feather and fan lace stitch is a standard lace pattern and creates the illusion of alternating waves. It is a good pattern to use when designing scarfs, shawls, and blankets.

So far I've watched three Feather and Fan tutorials and they are all somewhat different. Some start with multiples of 18, some with 24, some have KT3X, some 6....ugh! it is so confusing and what is worse, I always end up with the wrong number of stitches!

I think the general principle of Feather and Fan is that the pattern width is divisible by three giving an even number (so there are N * 3 stitches in the pattern repeat). Then when you get to Row 3, you decrease by N/2 stitches, increase by N stitches, and then decrease by N/2 stitches, so that you end up with the same number of stitches that you started with. So, in this version, N=8 (8 * 3 = 24). At the start, there are 24 stitches on the left needle. You K2tog four times, thus changing 8 stitches into 4 stitches (stitch count: 4 on the right needle, 16 on the left needle); then you KO + YO eight times, changing 8 stitches into 16 stitches (stitch count: 20 stitches on the right needle, 8 stitches on the left needle); then you do another K2tog four times, again changing 8 stitches into 4 stitches (final stitch count: 24 stitches on the right needle - back where you started from). So, if you have a version with multiples of 18, then in that version, N=6. So, theoretically, you could have a version with multiples of 30, where N=10, or a version with multiples of 12, where N=4.
I hope that makes things clearer.

Very clear video but I would like to know, when you start the pattern again you just start in the same way( k2 tog) 4? or inverted?
I have been trying this stitch and I didn't understant it so much
I wanted to knit a vest in a medium size, how many stitches should I cast on?
I look forward to hearing from you soon
    Thank you very much!!!

I tried your pattern today but I couldn't go on after the 3rd row
because all the yarns over I have knittedin the row before
became new stitches so my work was so wide then I have
    almost the double of stitches
and it was wrong and I don't know why..so frustrating!!
What should I do in the purl row after, with all the yarn overs?
Could you explain me a bit more clear, please?
Thanks a lot for your time and attention

People in the comments; I strongly suggest that you study up on the different knitting techniques if you want to be a knitter...
Lace patterns require you to increase and decrease stitches simultaneously! Therefore a YO (Yarn Over) adds a stitch and a K2tog (Knit Two Together) subtracts a stitch. Thus if you K2tog eight times you need to do YO 8 times to maintain the same number of stitches at all times... On the next row you then simply knit or purl into those Yarn Overs as if they are regular stitches because for the sake of a lace pattern they are...
It really isn't rocket science people, come on! Don't always rely on being spoon fed.

Rocket science it is not . However instruction needs to be clear and precise. When you are teaching you should be clear. Go over all the questions in your head and answer them so the recipient of your instruction is not confused and left with questions. Some like to behave as if they were born knowing we all had to taught and we all had to learn. Belittling students and using dismissive language like “not rocket science”. Is in no way helpful.

@@alisonjohnson1701 True, it isn't helpful, but I do think that it is a fair complaint that, since the start of the video declares "you will need to know these techniques" it is NOT the fault of the instructor that the people have ignored the prerequisites for doing this stitch.

every time i have looked at a tutorial with this company there are bits missing or things are not clear. Why is that?

i have never had a problem with the tutorials here. if i have a question u just ask and have always found help. sometimes i have had to watch more than once because i am learning. Maybe you should try that before leaving a rude comment or if you can do better make your own tutorials.
