I can't believe I told you about this after I purchased mine and you got yours first. I did order the 4Gb version with the display, maybe that's why I haven't received mine yet. Thanks for the review, now I can order a 3 amp supply and have it ready for mine when it comes in.
Different SBCs fit different Projects, and MAYBE the LatePanda is indeed the one for you, but i would encourage you to take a look at the UDOO X86 aswell if you havn't made your purchase yet. It comes in 3 Versions with Quadcore intel CPUs up to 2.56GHz (Pentium N3710) and up to 8GB of RAM. IT only comes with 8GB eMMC, but has a SATA and M.2 Slots. It also has HDMI and 2x Mini-DP++ so you can connect up to 3 4K displays right out of the Box. And as a Makerboard, it has full Arduino 101 support with intel Curie among other nifty stuff.
Thanks for the great review. I'm still waiting to get mine from Kickstarter. I went with the 4/64 model with the display (no touchscreen), and am glad to see how well yours performed.
I cringed every time he says Windows !!! LOL Linux is so much better for project computers like this... Free , and open source is always the best way to go...
Makers will have a field day with this one, thanks for the review Lon. Would be interesting to see this thing maxed out with the Arduino part working on something, and the PC also plugged... might be a bit harsh on the power supply. xD
Help me .... My lattepanda has a defect, I have a defective part, when I connect the disply after a few minutes my lattepanda reboots, I noticed a hole in a component next to | wa, is at the bottom right, behind to display the cross connector
I'm surprised that you haven't mentioned the thermal throttling bottleneck that lots of people seem to experience with this board. Any explanation for that?
Good review.. just got mine in the mail today. Other coverage has talked a lot about thermal issues. Anything more you can show on this board would be great! (I got the same model as you.)
I think the windows license is free for sub $100 pcs and tablets so I don't think that would effect the lower priced version. It may possibly effect the higher end model depending (maybe) on how they're wording the upgrade.
What W10 edition is exactly delivered with this board? Looks like no one bothered saying in any of the reviews. Afaik, the mobile editions of Win10 are only for ARM, but this is Intel Atom. Mostly I'm interested if it can be domain joined (aka Pro version). Wishful thinking?... :-) Thanks.
+Lon Seidman Sweet! Does that plate act as a heat sink? That UP Board has a Z8350 which clocks up to 1.92Ghz Strange, but I went out and purchased that VOYO V3 I seen a teardown on it and he too did a reinstallation of Windows and just use the normal home version and not the Chinese version and it worked, but backing up all drivers are important and I have plans to do a heatsink mod so it wont throttle... Did you ever get the drivers I sent you?
I used the Chrome browser... I found all you need to resolve this issue with the Voyo V3 Mini PC V3 OS: Double click on the first folder called Mini PC V3 OS and you'll see a series of folders and files, don't try to download all at once. You can right click on the first folder and you get a popup in Chinese to OK the download, click on it. I was able to get the next without waiting, but they're all separately downloaded... The folders named "EFI" and "images" you need to create a folder and name it then right click and download these files separately and add to that folder... NOTE: Some file automatically rename the files so you may or may not need to rename a couple zips and others... yunpan.cn/lk/cxxWj6pRmPTRi
looks really good! I have an idea.. you always show alot of interesting kickstarter campaigns.. some is still on going and some have ended.. I would love it if there was a place to see the interesting campaigns (of technology) so that I could join in.. I know that this is improbable because you already have tons of awesome stuff in your channel.. it is just an idea.. could be interesting.. anyway I really enjoy this channel.. there is something in this channel that you can't find on others..
Hello, my name is Toon Bongers from Rotterdam, Holland. I bought a lattepanda, but it doesn't work with my 1000 ma powersupply, for it needs 2000ma. I have a 3100 ma (max) powersupply. Do you think I can use this without problems?
+WaifersHD that's his camera control so he can easily switch between different cameras or screen views so one part might have the camera on him and then he'll press a button and switch to display of the computer or vice a versa.
I wonder if one of those USB3 to PCIe adapter cards would work on this. It would be interesting to see how an upgraded graphics card would improve gaming.
I have been eyeballing this one... PCI Express 1x to 2 PCI-e 16x slot Adapter for External Integrated Graphics Card www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-Express-1x-to-2-PCI-e-16x-slot-Adapter-for-External-Integrated-Graphics-Card-/201372419467?hash=item2ee2bb458b:g:5jAAAOSw~ZdVf5Oo
I know this is an old comment, but I hope you didn't buy one of those! It doesn't connect to your USB port, it connects to a PCIe 1x slot and just uses the USB cable to transfer the PCI data. It won't work if you plug the USB cable into a regular USB port.
it does have USB ports for you can use for expanded storage (just use a powered USB hub) I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work. it is a x86 windows PC after all.
Very interesting.I read they wanna make this a 10 dollar windows PC. That would be very cool if they could ever do this. 10$ for this little PC is a steal.
Hai Lon, what i wanted to know for a long time is this.... are these cheap and low energy win.10 pc's also good for setting up a teamspeak server? ...and do you think that there are better and cheaper ways to run a TeamSpeak server?
This looks really cool. Like that there is a 4GB version with more storage. $130 isnt that bad for it either. Especially considering the price of the hdmi stick computers like the intel computstick and this one having an arduino built in. Hopefully other manufacturers feel the need to compete with this model.
***** thanks that is great. also there is other device from teradek.com/ i think, they have a streamer that is good is cost around 999$ saves in SD and stream or you can get the 550$ and just saves in SD
I am one of many people who have ditched cable Tv and have gone totally online for television and movies. I'm currently running an AMD based 3 core phenom processor at 1.8 ghz. I figured the 1.4 quad would match the performance of my current cpu and allow me to use my larger radiator of a system as solely a workhorse, and the lattepanda I have on order as my tv and surfing box. it will keep my deskspace much cooler and while it doesn't have the storage space as my 1.5 tb i would mostly be using it for online streaming and facebook. have you tested it directly with netflix and/or any off the books sites for streaming? how did it perform with those?
Since it replaced of laptop to carry on, storage of videos and edited software to use... uploaded to RUclips... l have GAEMS monitor HDMI support.. work perfectly.. if it is so hard to start and make it better..
I'm just looking for something to play movies on, like mkv HD movies, kodi, and quick browsing and RUclips, will this be a better option than raspberry. Can you install linux
Looks like an excellent device but running at 2Amps at 5 Volts you need a motorbike battery to run it away from the mains, which begs the question why put an Arduino on the board? Perhaps it is to develop PC to Arduino software upon but that can already be done with a PC and an Arduino. Since Arduino now has virtually every form of wireless and wired communication sorted I'm wondering why makers would bother with it.
My Kickstarter isn't even planned for dispatch until 29/04 to the uk! Think I will be waiting awhile yet although I hope the 4Gb version I backed will be worth the wait!
Great video as always. When you try out Linux distros try installing and booting from the SD Card. Just because it boots and recognizes hardware when booting from a bootable LiveUSB/CD/DVD doesn't mean it'll perform the same when independently booting directly. Certain drivers that are present on the live media may or may not install when installing to discrete storage like that board's eMMC or even an SD Card. Just my $0.02 from experience I've had with such.
Well with my experience I was able to install the Grub bootloader to the pre-existing EFI partition, and then from there you can tell it where the SD card is (usually /dev/mmcblk1px where px is the partition number, depending on how many partitions your linux installer of choice made as part of its default install procedure). I of course don't have a LP board, but I do have a similar Atom-based device (a BayTrail-T based tablet) and it's worked like that for me, with other things I had to do as well to make it work.I can elaborate if you want me to.
Hi Lon, great review! Thanks for doing it. Question, did you ever determine whether this device to can start up automatically when power is applied rather than pushing the small button on the unit?
Hi Lon, I've seen in your video that Lattepanda can stream HD MKV and I wonder whether it can or not read a bluray plugged in a usb port. Is Lattepanda able to run software like PowerDVD ? Nice video, keep going on ! :)
I’m very very happy for the device. But, one thing is that there is n tutorials how to use it.So I’m cordially requesting you to upload some tutorials about how to use it in case of high range drone and robotics.
+Fred Zlotnick you can buy 5v 3a micro usb chargers everywhere, it's an extra amp and supports the same V, so in terms increase somewhat performance, you may wanna add something else, shame an ssd might be out the question, could be done...
+Joaquin Lopez May At 12:43 Lon explains his recommendations. Basically, if you're just getting the computer to use out of the box, go with the Kangaroo (your basic consumer). It's cheaper too. If you like to tinker around with your PC and all those settings that the LattePanda has in the BIOS, then get the Panda.
hey Lon, could you make a video of the thermals of cherry trail PCs/laptops? I think it will be a very great experiment to see how do the asus laptop with the z8300 works under heavy load. Or even comparing the kangaroo mini PC stock performance and the performance if you put a fan on it or find any way of cooling it. As you may see, last computers with Cherry Trail Thottles a lot because of bad cooling systems. It will be great to know how are manufacturers holding this problem and if they really make something about it at all. Great videos, Like a lot your channel btw! Regards
Maybe the fan pins could let you use some tiny LED strips and a tiny CPU cooler and tiny fans, put it in a tiny scale PC case and you've got a working miniature desktop tower. Maybe even overclock the atom and make it looks like a mini gaming desktop
soooo, the Kangaroo Pro comes with the Dock (which must be Purchased in unison, each time you Buy) for $200 and you're telling me that the LattePanda, at $139 *for the High End Model (Cherry Trail Z8300 Quad Core, 4GB DDR3L, WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 etc. etc.) is LESS user friendly? - and the LattePanda comes with Arduino (ATmega32u4) On Board also!!!! Personally I'd say the Kangaroo Pro has a 'Cleaner Look' as it comes totally encased in a plastic box, so aesthetically, Yeah I guess it does look tidier & unobtrusive. - but if that's your goal then why bother with buying a mini PC Board cos you might as well go out and buy something like an Apple Mac mini!?
I don't think 32G of storage is going to be enough for Windows 10. They should quit making 32G models when you need much more then that just for the installation files.
If this sbc is intended for makers, why the hell is every review focuses on games and hires graphics?! Makes absolutely no sense. The only thing I am interested in how is it integrated with the micro controller, how to run devices, projects on it. Details, please....
when he says "it has an arduino" does he mean it has the same atmel microcontroller installed on an arduino? arduino is the combo of uC, power electronics, PCB, USB, etc. hopefully he didn't call it arduino because it had a 0.1" socket header! lol
I wouldn't personally recommend the Latte Panda... I grabbed one of the 4/64GB models and found that it would thermal throttle near enough from the moment it was booted up. Even browsing the web would slow to a crawl not long after starting the device. Performance wise after it starts to throttle... it ends up about about half of what an older Baytrail tablet would give you. If you want a cheap Cherrytrail device... grab any cheap Windows tablet... don't buy the Panda... not until they sort out their cooling :/ The processor is on the bottom of the board which doesn't help. I have put up a little video showing performance tanking on the panda... while it comes across as a joke video... my disappointment is very real. Real shame...
Hello MAKERS. For those who own the Latte Panda and plan to use sensors/arduino abilities i created a facebook group to share tips & tricks + your projects ! LINK => facebook.com/groups/1684857198431597/ See you there makers :-)
Nice review. I, too, have been wondering when one of these would be made for Windows. This means some project ideas I had could come to fruition...
A wild eposvox has been spotted as i was looking for possible cheap thin client hardware! :D
I can't believe I told you about this after I purchased mine and you got yours first. I did order the 4Gb version with the display, maybe that's why I haven't received mine yet. Thanks for the review, now I can order a 3 amp supply and have it ready for mine when it comes in.

That coffee bean eyes panda logo is adorable.
Niiiice review! I'm so excited, can't wait to have my enhanced edition with me already!
Did you never do the follow up videos?
If I want to connect a microphone directly to the panda, is this possible with the existing output ports configuration?
Makers will have a field day with this one, thanks for the review Lon.
Would be interesting to see this thing maxed out with the Arduino part working on something, and the PC also plugged... might be a bit harsh on the power supply. xD
I would love to make sort of a tablet out of this, since I have a few laptop screens laying around.

It does

Charles Turner the mounting would have to be changed but the hookups would definitely work as long as your battery can support enough output.
Hey Lon, How did it handle streaming sites like netflix or youtube via chrome? What about torrents?
I just saw a 4GB RAM and 64 GB storage model of LattePanda. I wonder whether the more powerful version is better than the one you reviewed here.

I love your Aplle IIGS!!!
+Lon Seidman Please do, I wish I could get my IIGS connected to my home LAN, even thought there isn't much software for it.
It did not have enough Amps :) Voltage is constant, same 5v.
+Alin Banc almost correct, if it can't supply enough current, it will either shut down the power supply, or the voltage will droop ( fall off)
+Fred Zlotnick you can buy 5v 3a micro usb chargers everywhere, it's an extra amp and supports the same V, so in terms increase somewhat performance, you may wanna add something else, shame an ssd might be out the question, could be done...
that's a good idea. Still the voltage remains 5V, the supply can now supply enough current so the voltage won't droop or the supply won't shut down.
thanks for the vid im gonna try and get my hands on this
But will it run crysis 3 4k?
4k 60fps ultra settings
Mr. Lon can you do the review on the UP-BOARD computer? thanks keep up the good work sir

Is it a gigabit Ethernet or 100Mbps Ethernet?
100 MBPS. The more expensive one is 500 I think
arjewino it's an Arduino
there are too many SBC's. It's such a split landscape of communities with all these different boards.
Really cute pc. I was confused why you'd want so many fan headers at first. Plenty of sensor pins sounds more reasonable.
*Arduino. Not 'ardguino'.

Change the power from efficient to high performance
looks cool but the price is a little high. I'll pick one up if I can get a deal
I am going to buy one to supplement my raspberry pi for my windows/x86 needs
I don't think 32G of storage is going to be enough for Windows 10. They should quit making 32G models when you need much more then that just for the installation files.
Looks like a hipsters dream machine.
Have any network analyses been done on these? Kinda worried about spying, especially from a no-name Chinese product...
If this sbc is intended for makers, why the hell is every review focuses on games and hires graphics?! Makes absolutely no sense. The only thing I am interested in how is it integrated with the micro controller, how to run devices, projects on it. Details, please....
I don't think the device would be any cheaper without Windows as Windows is free for devices under either $250 or $200 as I recall
i have one they are excellent and i have hardly used any of it yet !
if this had two ethernet ports, it would have been possible to install pfsense.
It's run windows 7 oe not
when he says "it has an arduino" does he mean it has the same atmel microcontroller installed on an arduino? arduino is the combo of uC, power electronics, PCB, USB, etc. hopefully he didn't call it arduino because it had a 0.1" socket header! lol
nice review bro
I love to program with ARDUINO where did you get it?
I wonder why those things are expensive, is it because of the windows license ? raspberry pi is only $35 and is more powerful than this one I think
Steam Link $49 + $35 for a Raspberry Pi 3 = $84 ... or LattePanda $90 ...
Or you can simply stream Steam to the Raspberry Pi 3 ...
you need a 5 v 2 amp power supply
Lon, put some color to your set. Toooo gray !!!
