I have recently come across CMU PocketSphinx. A free standalone voice recognition app. Was wondering if you could be so kind as to see how that works on the LattePanda. It seems alright with Raspberry Pi 3 so I thinking it would even be better with the Panda.
Hey, Christopher Barnatt! You are the best RUclipsr when it comes to niche computer products, SBCs, and microcontrollers. Hope you grow big and more people get into this side of the electronics industry. SBCs are great projects, and I hope they allow people to make things like smartphones in the future. I am a big fan of the LatterPanda myself, as it is an X86 SBC instead of the slew of ARM SBCs on the market.
When you said "Hey Cortana" mine responded lol. Ive never used Cortana but what impressed me is that the tv I was watching you on is 8 feet away from my microphone. Its actually a usb rockstar mic for xbox 360 which cost me £5.I really love your videos. They are informative and entertaining. Thank you.
I have now watched many of your videos, mostly about the single board computers. Love the videos thanks for the help. Even my wife that could not begin to understand how a light bulb worked said the other day. "you can not help but listen to this guy he's so engaging"
Great video! The board gets quite hot, does it? If only we knew someone who could make videos testing passive and active cooling solutions for single board computers ... hmm.
Hoping to put this on mine when I get it. www.amazon.co.uk/Connectland-1504002-Heatsink-Cooling-Motherboard/dp/B004HO5D98/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491151589&sr=8-1&keywords=copper+heatsink
yes was thinking the same thing , throw a nice heatsink in there too , looks like 50 cd sleeve but you could put 100 sleeve on it taller sleeve ,more room for heat sink and fan and maybe you could dremel out some holes near the bottom were the ports are and 3d print some curved trim plates to go in the holes with nice cutouts for all the ports and glue them on ,do you think a cooled panda could handle a plex server with transcoding if it is only serving 1 or 2 clients at a time?
the plastic pipe in my soap dispenser broke this morning and I got stupidly excited when you showed that bit of pipe. I thought it looks perfect for my needs... oh, never mind.
Thanks for keeping shit real dude. I like the way you think. And I know you read and respond to comments. That means a lot when you have nearly 200K subs, But you know that and we respect it. - Cheers
For cooling with the CD case, you could put a old CPU fan under it, and use the female pin slots to put in the power wires. You might be able to connect it with the CPU pins for controlling when the fan turns on.
I use a latte panda as a tablet i bring to classes since my laptop is too big. It needs a heatsink big time. The one with the built in fan that DF robot sells is good enough but i mounted an inline slide switch so it wouldn't drain the battery when turned off.
I love your "SBC as daily driver" videos and this one was the best. It really is amazing how little computer we actually NEED, isn't it? Having said that, I personally would have put some sort of active cooling on it to ensure best performance.
I am shocked. Absolutely shocked. I find it absolutely amazing that this SBC runs Windows 10 so well and my parents literally just upgraded to a TB Levono because I finally# got the message across that their computer was "so slow" because it was pulling full capacity to run Windows 7 and did not have the RAM or processing power to upgrade Windows even one more single time.
Thanks for the video! I've only recently discovered your channel after stumbling on one of your Raspberry Pi videos. I'm sort of on a binge now on your videos :)
Chuwi vi8 has a battery and screen on it . this panda looks nice but needs a big cooling sink and tall 3d printed enclosure , so that the fan and sink would fit in it. please add links to files of your 3d work. thank you for this vid.
Having the antenna floating under the board seems to defeat the purpose of keeping the computer safe from shorting out on metal objects (unless the antenna is coated in an insulator). Still, I love the case.

It's pretty bad when a tiny Windows 10 SBC can do lots of video editing, audio editing, and other things when my old laptop (w/ Windows 10) cannot even play 1080p videos...
It seems like you hinted at it, but I wonder if you can import (failing that, design) a 3D model to be printed to your 3D printer for a better case for the LattePanda.
Hi Chris, I have a suggestion for a further Latte Panda test that I think could be well received by other subscribers and more. As you have both versions of the Latte Panda would you consider doing a comparison test running Minecraft on both? As Minecraft can show processing information on screen (like FPS) it would be relatively easy to compare both, and I would be really interested to see the difference the extra RAM makes and what effect the 64bit and 32bit versions of Windows make. Love your videos, I´m learning a lot. I just don´t know why the way you teach remember me my mother. Anyway, Do you know what kind of computers they use there in Tavistock ?
I'm thinking about picking up a latte panda myself to replace the gole 1 that I have been working on and accidentally bricked. cause I have several people asking me how I did alot of the things I showed on my gole 1 gaming wise and the latte panda is pretty similar spec wise.

Chris, not sure I get your comment about Powerpoint? Office XP is pretty old now and your pressie looked like fairly basic slides etc? Surely any version of OO or Libre or WPS or Softmaker or OnlyOffice would have outputted a decent looking and compatible pressie?
The thumbs down is for the panda. especially now that Intel and microsoft have pretty-well killed the Atom. I personally wouldn't bother with this. My LattePanda came with a little cpu fan. Not sure if that is an optional accessory or if all new shipments include that. Seems to run too hot without it.
hi Chris, good video. I'd really like to see an edition of the latte panda with 8GB RAM, 128gb on board storage a gigabit Nic and also a SATA interface! then I'd buy one!
Great video, I enjoyed it. especially where you use audition, as I have been using it since 1995 when it was cool edit on a 486. I did the raspberry pi for a good part of the summer as my main computer it did very well. But sometimes you just need windows. Thanks for showing a real world test of the panda.
I need to use a drone to hunt for Wireless Interference for the company I work for and was stuck for a solution to connect the portable spectrum analyser the drone will carry to something I can view back on the ground. I've ordered one of these and I think it will solve my problem as it should run the analysers software and I can use VNC and WiFi to see the spectrum, that's the theory. Great video.
Christopher you must have watched a lot of Blue Peter in your childhood. DVD containers? really? you did not secure the bolts with double sided selotape did you?
Hi.. congratulations for your video. Would you tell me if panda can conect to a private net by LAN net conector.... and if we can install other updates windows with oficce software?
Edit: Windows 10 only links the product key to the Microsoft account but only works on that PC. Some people pirate Windows, which is the only way to active Windows 10 free. Bottom Line: You can't use a digital product key from a other Windows 10 PC on a other Windows 10 PC. This feature was introducted on the Windows 10 Build 1607/Anniversery Update.
Very comprehensive first look indeed! I had a few questions: What are the power requirements for this board? How much current does it draw at full load? Do you reckon you can mount a heatsink over the metal shielding and maybe put a cooling fan over it? Do you think it's a good choice for simple office work and a bit of browsing? Or are there cheaper solutions? Cheers!
It runs fine from a 2A 5V adapter. I've not (yet) measured the power use. Yes, you can mount heatsinks on the metal shielding -- which for the CPU is under the board. And you can put a fan over that (DF Robot even sell one). And there are pins to connect it to for power. For simple office work and browsing it is a good choice -- everything I did of that nature during the week was on the 2/32, and it worked fine. The big benefit of the LattePanda is that you have Windows. So if you need Windows, it is pretty much unbeatable (in my opinion!) right now. If you don't need Windows, The Raspberry Pi 3 takes a lot of beating. Not quite as responsive as a LattePanda, but very usable under Linux. This said, the web browsing experience -- especially playing video -- is better on the LattePanda.
+1 for Adobe Audition. That's an old program (CoolEdit, if anyone remembers) but still powerful enough for all everyday audio tasks and also really intuitive, which is important if you use it occasionally and don't want to relearn things. Just a glimpse in menus and you remember how to use it.
It was at the University of Nottingham -- I'm back doing some teaching for them at the moment. Not recorded I'm afraid, though there is an intro to the module here: ruclips.net/video/EUfW70Xm4ak/видео.html
Very easy -- anything with a USB connection just works. The DVD drive here was connected using an IDE to USB convertor (it was an old DVD); more modern drives would need a SATA to use adapter. Note that the DVD needs its own power (here my convertor has its own adapter).
External USB powered Bluray drive (uses 2 USB ports, connected to a powered USB hub, no AC adaptor for the drive itself). Media streaming via Ethernet.
I do like the SBC's like the Pi and Panda. But it does look to fall short compared to a laptop in two ways. The need for an external display. And a need for external power. I wonder what a small case that incorporates a small LCD and battery pack would do to its portability.
All of this can/could be done. SBCs run very well off USB power banks -- and I've tried a 7 inch touchscreen on the LattePanda previously. I just need to case it all somehow! Here's where I tried the touchscreen: ruclips.net/video/j7o6CBNUmt4/видео.html
I would like to see what you come up with as far as a portable case solution involving that screen and a battery pack. (if you decide to attempt it) I think you could get away fairly minimalist with the design of it assuming you use your wireless keyboard/trackpad.
Sir can i get one of the lattepanda so that i can use it as my pc as now iam using raspberry pi as my pc please reply fast But Mr . scissors are not seen for long use it for atomic pi :)
@@ExplainingComputers Sir I would like to get one of the lattepanda you have as i would like to use it my pc but this is because I cannot afford to buy a new one as I am a student who doesn't have pocket money at all and If you want I will pay an affordable price I know it is given by dfrobot for review puropose but If you help me I will always remember this ..... Thank you in advance Anil.v from India
This is just insane. LattePanda is just powerful enough to be a workstation computer system for a business, and easily. I'm blown away!
When you said Hey Cortana, my laptop told me the weather in london......
:)
When I say "Alexa" it ignores me. I have had to pair it with a blutoth speaker"
Cortana botnet horseshit
I have recently come across CMU PocketSphinx. A free standalone voice recognition app.
Was wondering if you could be so kind as to see how that works on the LattePanda.
It seems alright with Raspberry Pi 3 so I thinking it would even be better with the Panda.
This makes me realize how much work goes into each video. Very informative on both the Panda and the way you work.
loved this video!! absolutely amazing! it really show case more of you and your personally really shined! well done
Thanks. You may like next week's video too -- kind of a thing about storage! :)
Can't Wait!!!, are you going to explain how cloud storage is really just storing files on someone else computer? HAHA

Just love the way you present your videos and how you transition the video. Great work.
Would love to see a Latte Panda case that would be great.
OMGurr! The fact that you had multiple 25-CD Shipping Cases sitting around is the most amazing thing, to me.
That pop sound at 8:37 of the plastic pipe detaching was great.
:)
I LOVE the idea of using a cd spindle case, and I love the idea of the plastic tubes comming out of a soap dispenser even more!

Yes, I must get on the case . . .
Ryan Lester I ordered a fan with mine. it seems to make the job so the CPU is on maximum 70 during stress for a longer time
Hoping to put this on mine when I get it. www.amazon.co.uk/Connectland-1504002-Heatsink-Cooling-Motherboard/dp/B004HO5D98/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491151589&sr=8-1&keywords=copper+heatsink
Looks promising!
I'd keep the CD case and attach a 120mm fan to it :D
OK, brilliant idea! I will have to try this now!
We are expecting a follow up video.
yes was thinking the same thing , throw a nice heatsink in there too , looks like 50 cd sleeve but you could put 100 sleeve on it taller sleeve ,more room for heat sink and fan and maybe you could dremel out some holes near the bottom were the ports are and 3d print some curved trim plates to go in the holes with nice cutouts for all the ports and glue them on ,do you think a cooled panda could handle a plex server with transcoding if it is only serving 1 or 2 clients at a time?
With this idea perhaps using ceramic heat sinks might be a good idea over the usual copper/aluminium choices?
Put a sterling motor driven fan in the CD case. Why not use the waste heat to power the fan instead of draining more power to cool it.
Nothing better than waking up and seeing my new subscriptions including a video from you. ❤️👍
Thanks.
Stunningly good review.
I'am learning a lot of useful things from your videos, good job, many thanks from Scotland
This is probably one of the nerdiest channels on RUclips, I love it!!!
I loved that this became Blue Peter for a few minutes with the CD case and soap dispenser tube :-). Very enjoyable Chris.
I really enjoy your confident presentation, you make what would otherwise be a dry subject really interesting
the plastic pipe in my soap dispenser broke this morning and I got stupidly excited when you showed that bit of pipe. I thought it looks perfect for my needs... oh, never mind.
Wow - you don't just talk the talk you also put these little boards to use in a pretty serious way! Nice job!
Thanks for again for wonderful channel and exploration of the world single-board computers.

I am literally in awe of this little SSD. It's just so quick. (I prefer 2.5 or above processors, but this little 1.4 seems to be rather quick.)
Wait until you see the new LattePanda Alpha -- I expect to review it here in two weeks.
I recently found your channel and am new to the pi family.
You do some great work, its understandable and direct, thank you
Many thanks -- and welcome aboard! :)
Thanks for the video! I've only recently discovered your channel after stumbling on one of your Raspberry Pi videos. I'm sort of on a binge now on your videos :)
Enjoy! :)
Can you open some holes on the cap of the cd case so the wires can pass? Also another idea is to mount a fan on top of the cap
Really like Chris's narration, it's like an OU program from back in the day!
I actually like the CD spindle case. You could spray paint it black and add a fan and fan grill to the top.
What an interesting little board, I had not heard of this one before. I would also like to say I really enjoy your channel, you do fine work sir!
Many thanks.
Great video, of course it will run everything, but a bit slow. I loved the creativity with the soap dispenser.
What a great bit of kit
Chuwi vi8 has a battery and screen on it . this panda looks nice but needs a big cooling sink and tall 3d printed enclosure , so that the fan and sink would fit in it. please add links to files of your 3d work. thank you for this vid.
This very well may be my next purchase. Well done explaining the ins & outs.
Having the antenna floating under the board seems to defeat the purpose of keeping the computer safe from shorting out on metal objects (unless the antenna is coated in an insulator). Still, I love the case.
Great stuff. Thanks for your no nonsense videos
Loved the video as always!
An external fan is a must, the SOC throttles down quite quickly since it will get quite hot.
When you add a fan, it shouldn't ever throttle! (I have one and it's great, but wasn't when it didn't have a fan).
cross your eyes while watching this. The two pandas into 1 makes a 3D panda. Very cool.
:)
Thank you for the great video! The way you use your LattePanda as a portable computer is very interesting. Did you ever try to connect a portable beamer to it? It might be a nice laptop replacement for travellers who want to save space.
I liked your CD spindle case.
Can you reformat these board's to windows 7
You would need an appropriate image to install on the LattePanda, plus hardware drivers. Probably technically possible, but as far as I am aware not currently available.
I tried differenz images of Win7 and 8 to install. Win7 starts install, but freezes while installing. Win8 didn't even start from USB or CD (via USB) looks like we are stuck to Win10. Also there seems to be none Linux for the Panda, although it is advertised with it...
If someone knows a version of Win7pro/64 that can be installed on it, please let me know!
I am sick of this Win10 .... (Drivers can not be the big problem; you will find some, just a question of searching and time...)
+crapcbm I'd think the GPU and possibly network chipset might be exotic enough to warrant you'll never have Win7 on it properly, even if you coaxed the install to actually go through. There might be a better chance with Linux.
Windows needs some garbage ACPI BIOS support that you're likely not going to get out of this thing!
I am sure I will do this at some point. It has been on my list for some time!
The lattepanda is great! Glad to see this.
Finally, I am happy to 'loan' you my Minecraft account if you don't have one, as the feedback would be great and help my decision whether to buy one for my sons to use in the caravan during our holiday. Thanks, Dave.
love your video diary.

yes you can change the wallpaper on unactivated windows 10. just right click a picture and choose set as wallpaper. i do it all the time
Great tip -- I will try this. Thanks.
no problem.
I'm thinking about picking up a latte panda myself to replace the gole 1 that I have been working on and accidentally bricked. cause I have several people asking me how I did alot of the things I showed on my gole 1 gaming wise and the latte panda is pretty similar spec wise.

What would you class as run? If 1fpm (frame per minute) counts as running then yeah it could.
It can actually. Look up a video on RUclips where a guy hooked a 1060gtx up to the panda and ran all sorts of games.

Shadow's Insomniacs how exactly do you have this hooked up?
External USB powered Bluray drive (uses 2 USB ports, connected to a powered USB hub, no AC adaptor for the drive itself).
Media streaming via Ethernet.
Can t afford this but what to.do can I get it for less price
Hmmm... Might have to get one and put Arch on it.
That's a funny week. :D I like this type of videos.

That would be a great platform for retro computer emulation.
