The most astonishing and heartbreaking part about Engage's supports is that almost all of Hortensia's are incredibly well written and I can't just stick with hating her from her awful first impression.
I honestly still don't like her as a character, though she is such a great unit that I had to use her anyway. That being said, I think they overdid it with the English voice direction for her. Somewhat unusually for a character like her, I find her Japanese VA _far_ less grating.
For me, Hortensia is a character that is gimmicky sometimes but serious in others. And some of them show that she’s a good person despite her vain attitude. Like her supports with Ivy, Alear and Veyle.
If it werent for her clown design and being one of the whiniest characters, Hortensia would have probably been my favorite character because she actually reacts to things that happen to her in the plot.
@@whitewolf3051 I actually liked her support with Lapis. It's an interesting look at how neither of them feels worthy to be Alcryst's retainer, and when you consider what Alcryst is like, all three of them end up having self-esteem issues.
There are also some gems hidden in the bond supports as well: Ike and Soren's bluntness in general, Soren turning a discussion about sexism into a discussion of taxes, Soren having Goldmary in tears because he's taking none of her crap, Chloe having almost every Emblem she talks to be grateful they're ghosts because of her choice of food, Bunet asking Celica what her ring tastes like and Celica, (understandably) not wanting to be eaten, tells him to just let it be a mystery --only for his Chrom support to imply that he went ahead and tried it because now he wants to know what Bracelets taste like compared to Rings, with Chrom basically responding "Please don't lick Robin!"
This is a good point, but I think the bond conversations would be better if they were limited to the Emblem and the original ring holder (e.g. Marth and Alear) or those who have a lot in common (e.g.Ivy and Camilla).
I know Zelkov and Ivy's B support wasn't really covered here but I love how you included it in the intro anyways. That moment cracked me up when I first saw it.
The dumbness of the supports in this game is really amazing, from all the howls that the characters have to do with their supports with Pandreo (that Veyle's howl is the absolute cutest) to Etie calling Goldmary a "potato thief" and almost starting a war over a potato.
Pandreo and Pannete actually is probably the best support in my eyes. As a Christian tho, I very much wish they leaded more into a commentary of faith as to why he stayed with the church ( he’s always a super devout character it was RIGHT THERE!!! 🤣🤣😭) but them affirming their relationship and seeing someone just love and accept unguarded pannete was great

The funny thing about Yunaka is that she's actually not extroverted and happy-go-lucky at all. You can tell by things like the C-Forgado Support that she actually hates being among many people. Which I'm actually really glad they made her this way and not just "the meme character who does nothing but say "Zappy" alot".
Yeah, the moment she was introduced, I immediately thought: "There's no way this is real. It has to be fake." I certainly wasn't disappointed. If that had truly been Yunaka's personality, I would've written her off immediately.
Hortensia surprised me as well with how well written she is, her support with Ivy specifically surprised with how thoughtful and genuinely profound it is
Honestly I am getting hit by a truck with some of these supports to be honest the feels are real and I didn't initially expect to get attached to these characters as much as I did
Helps that Ivy is an exceptional character in her own right. She's basically Camilla done correctly. She's a very serious and composed individual, but her fear of ghosts allows her goofy side to shine through, along with how she gets embarrassed when she loses her composure. Her personality is a great foil to the regal appearance expected of royalty and none of it feels forced.
Kagetsu had a /lot/ of my favorite supports, but his with Boucheron was an especially big highlight. A lot of Ivy's supports also offer some surprising silliness to them that I can't help but love.
Etie and Yunaka's B support is absolutely hilarious in how Etie keeps insisting Yunaka stole something from her up till that point despite Yunaka proving it wasn't her doing. And then Yunaka's bewildered "huh" when Etie says "you've stolen my interest" absolutely sent me.
I loved some of Veyle’s supports. Her learning how to ride a wolf and nearly went off a cliff had me laughing. Then sharing her very spicy food with Alfred after teasing her expression was just too precious.
Ivy's supports involving ghosts, Seadall trying to understand Rosado's beauty regiment, Lindon using thunder is some weird way, Timerra making some of the cast sing, and Rosemary being savage to people who she sees as competition.
My favorite support has to be between Ivy and Panette and Ivy and Timera. Just the general idea of the Solm party girls trying to get Ivy to get over her fear of ghosts is so funny to me. Between Panette bringing Ivy to a graveyard and Timera and Ivy singing about ghosts, those two conversations has to be my favorite in the game.
Timerra in general. Just about all her supports puts the other character in the most awkward of situations and WAY out of their comfort zone, and she's just playing it up like it's the time of her life XD I love Timerra's supports XD
Hortensia's supports made me love her so much. She deserves the world and the fact that Ivy, Rosado and Goldmary care a ton for her. I'm glad her supports helped me see the best sides of Hortensia.

Gotta say that two recent support chains I’ve seen that have surprised me and made me audibly laugh a few times are Fogado and Rosado, and Vander and Goldmary. Oh, and the beginning of the supports between Alear and Amber get me, too 😅
Lindon seems like a pretty nothing character when you recruit him (he's literally a copy and paste of Wendell) but he has some pretty funny supports. He just loves using his thunder tome to do... everything.
one of my favourite supports from the game is the jean and Zelkov (or any jean support really). I just love how they bonded, their connection feels genuine, mixed with both melancholy and sweetness. We also finally learn something about Zelkov that *isn't* him being *quirky*
I hope you eventually do a comparison between the supports of 3H and Engage because I noticed how they are fundamentally different from one another For example in the Alcryst/Citrinne support they drop the fact they are cousins but it's never mentioned again nor it would matter if it was removed from the conversation Meanwhile if you transported this support to 3H it would probably open with this fact and then analyze why a technical member of the royal family is expected to serve and potentially die for the second prince of their nation or something along those lines Likewise how we know so little about their world (I straight up forgot the name of the continent) while what Fodlan was and its situation was such a pivotal element of 3H it shaped its supports
Well it would matter because Citrinne and Chloe's supports directly cover that she only got in as a retainer because of her heritage and connections to Diamant and Alcryst.

Pandreo is genuinely my favorite Engage character. 65 percent of his supports are goofy and the others are genuine critiques on the world's views on religion. His Mauvier and Veyle supports are so sweet. And his Alcryst support is equally goofy and sweet. It helps that he's also one of the best units in the game.
Two of my favorite supports in the game are Celine x Alcryst and Yunaka x Citrinne. Both are more serious though. Celine x Alcryst hit me because it was the first support outside of Alfred that wasn't about tea. I wasn't expecting it, but then bam! serious topic. A similar thing with Yunaka x Citrinne where I had at that point only had more fun and carefree supports with Citrinne so seeing her acting super serious instantly got my attention, and of course Yunaka is always a delight.
Honestly Citrine and Yunaka's supports has to be my favorite support in Engage. Fleshing out Yunaka's backstory and explaining why she acts the way she does in the main game is really interesting and kinda made her my favorite character in Engage.
It was also, that I remember, the ONLY Alcryst support where he wasn't his typical apologetic pessimistic sad sack that he usually is. He was being the genuine guy that was always there comforting Celice every night, telling her things to get her mind off of her nightmares, and then reassuring her that, nightmares they may be, he uses them to make sure that they DON'T come true. It was Alcryst being nothing but a serious, genuine caring guy to Celine. I love their support so much.
For an addition to the "surprisingly deep supports" list I offer Framme/Diamant. Framme is another character who has surprisingly good supports (when they don't center around her obsession with Alear) and her Diamant one goes in an interesting direction. Diamant encourages her in her history studies but this ends up leading to them having some uncomfortable discussions about Brodia's history and how Diamant plans on reforming their aggressive militaristic ways.
Alear with Goldmary or Zelkov are some of my favorite silly supports. Alear being the straight man to everyone else just makes them way funnier, and the fact that they still try to get on Zelkov's level just makes it better.
If there's any support you need to highlight, I would def recommend Kagetsu and Zelkov's support chain. The level of goofiness that transitions into such a wholesome ending that contrasts the initial relationship between Ivy, Zelkov and Kagetsu is seriously great!
A lot of Timerra's supports are really fun. Ivy, Diamant and Seadall come to mind. Yunaka x Goldmary is a good one 'cause Laura Post is just that good of a voice actor. Fogado x Rosado is pretty funny. Ivy x Panette because ghosts. In terms of serious supports Alrcyst x Seadall, Alcryst x Celine, Alcryst x Ivy and Ivy x Hortensia come to mind (Dang, Alcryst has a lot of good supports!). A big one is definitely Alfred x Celine. That A-support is *HUGE* for Alfred's character.
Shoutouts to Yunaka for me easily best supports for me. All of Yunaka’s hits perfectly cuz they all a variation of her learning to accept herself and to open up to people and let her guard down a bit. Alfred especially cuz works cuz it’s great to watch his idealistic self interacting with an especiallly individual, and you all are know how good citrine’s is and with my own circumstances growing up I can relate a lot with yunaka’s goals she talks about in. It’s like you write a character with complexities you get layered and deep interactions with other characters. It’s crazg how it works
I really like a lot of Lindon's supports and all the inventive uses for thunder magic he can find. Also Timerra's supports because she forces people to sing and it's great.
Good to see these! Only in my second playthrough, and Rosado in my first team and Hortensia and Merrin in my second, but at least was working my way up with Pandreo and Vander in the second one. I've come to really enjoy a lot of the light hearted and sillier supports in Engage, especially as I was a bit nervous that most of the early Firene characters weren't quite, uh, engaging to me (I did like Boucheron pretty quick though).
That's why this support pool is super funny to me cuz for a person who was a sleep for 1000 year and was a murderbot up until then, Alear is like.... Freakishly good with people. He’s able to pick up a person’s cues and say the right thing nearly all the time, if they need it, guide them gently to a healthier mindset, and if he’s wrong he apologizes, and isn’t afaid to slide a compliment it. They sound like the perfect person to do a young justice speed therapy with the cast of Fodlan 🤣
@@yukotrey9422 Well Alerar does have the benefit of gaining a loving mom when Alear was stuck as a blank state. It was easy to carry over her love naturally.
While Engage’s writing is not the same level as Three houses. It’s not as bad as people making it out to be. It’s just a lighthearted and simple and there’s nothing wrong with that.
I feel like three houses was worse then engage but mostly because of how .. squicky the romance options were, nothing like being a teacher grooming kids and the game deciding to say that was okay to do
I really enjoyed the Merrin and Yunaka supports. I just love hearing people or characters dork out over their passions. Hell, they even helped me decide on who to give the pact ring to (It was Yunaka).
Hortensia should have annoyed me with how she acts like cute is everything but I enjoy her enough especially with Anna who has massive mesugaki energy. Rosemary is ok same with Chloe. Both cute somewhat tropey but it works Merrin ivy veyle marvian oned I actually looked forward to seeing
These supports embodies engage well, a bit of dumb fun that knows its dumb, I really wish people wouldn't knock the game because it's dumb fun and not super dark and edgy like three houses was
The problem is that engage could be dumb fun without removing all of the effort. This is a problem the devs have because they think they can only do gameplay or story, not both, when that’s nonsense.
@RamenBomberDeluxe It really does feel like that's the case, yeah. There's no reason why IS can't double down and get the best of both worlds, when they've shown that they can do it on separate occasions.
@@UnlimitedMrX Furthermore, they need to start doubling down on fleshing out larger casts. I would rather they not fall down a rabbit hole of making their games have small casts, because that ruins the point of making an ARMY of characters. Yes, its harder to do that. Yes, many of them would stop being plot relevant after a point. Yes, they might have to consider the mix-and-match nature of who lives adn dies when it comes to the characters who ARE relevant if they dont just retreat when defeated. But, they can do it, they can find a way to pull it off. These games usually sell pretty good nowadays, adn its time they took a long, hard look at this situation.
@RamenBomberDeluxe Agree 1000%. I've noticed in most modern FE's that the main story really only focuses on like 5 or so main characters. In Awakening it was Robin, Chrom, Lissa, Fred, and Lucina. In Fates it's Corrin, Azura and whatever Royal family you chose. In Engage it's Alear, Veyle and the Crown royals of each nation. Engage might be the worst case of it because the younger Royal siblings just stop showing up in cufscenes after a certain point (despite, imo, them often being more interesting than their older siblings), and half the Crown royals that do get consistent screentime do nothing with it. Alfred and Timerra just kind of stand there after the Firene and Solm arcs respectively. 3H was a step in the right direction because the game was able to account for you having a starting house of Byleth + 8 units to work with. Most students got to chime in during cutscenes even if a lot of dialogue was filler that could easily be cut if they died. But it still felt like a squad, *your* squad. Echoes similarly had various characters on each side like the Villagers/Deliverance on Alm's side, and Mae, Boey, Saber and Valbar on Celica's side. They actually chimed in during cutscenes and it felt like your whole army was relevant in the end, despite the game being the Alm and Celica show at the end of the day. One of the reasons why Radiant Dawn is my favorite game is because of the multiple army approach the game had. That, alongside the base convos (they need to bring those back), gave you factions that were small yet distinct enough to where you can have people who aren't the MC and they're inner circle of 4 dudes be important. Small moments like Tauroneo being present in most of the lategame Dawn Brigade scenes, or Soren and Skrimir's bantering in the war council stick out to me as a cool little things the game did. Hell, *Geoffrey* of all people was basically a minor Lord in a few maps. Tl;dr, it seems like games where the rosters are split tend to have more fleshed out character input, from my experience.
My favorite part about the Pandreo Vander support has to be that Pandreo has about the same reaction to Vander learning to dance as he as to finding out Alear is the divine dragon
Alcryst's supports with Alear are really great to me in a way that got me to appreciate his character. My first impression wasn't good. I thought they were playing up his meekness similar to Bernadetta in Three Houses, and her panicking in almost every support stopped being funny or relatable after a while. But his apologizing to a wolf about to attack them, and it actually working was pretty funny. My partner who hasn't played the game, overheard the C support and instantly said "I love him". This, alongside his other more serious conversations, I can't help but agree. We have a pretty lovable cast of characters here.
Some of the funniest guys I know were members of the armed forces, mainly the US Army or US Marine Corps. For some reason these guys have an amazing sense of humor. So if people think that being a soldier means you can't have fun, Fire Emblem and real life prove that they do have fun when it is necessary.
Honestly my favourite running gag in engage is Alfred and Etie being kinda envious of Boucheron because he's naturally buff and stocky while they're still twigs despite training so hard
I admittedly do find a lot of Engage's supports a bit bland, but there are two characters in particular that I love. Zelkov is just a weird but stellar guy and his 'gimmick' of overenunciation is one of the least intrusive in the game allowing him to be more of an actual character. Then there's Hortensia, who I was convinced I was going to hate, but ended up really liking. Her outfit and initial impression made me sure she was going to be awful, but what sold her to me is that she's one of the few characters with flaws that are allowed to be flaws. She craves her old life to the point of doing bad things to achieve it, she loves her father to the point of ignoring his clearly evil tendencies and she gets frustrated when her attempts to fix her life never go her way. These are all reasonable actions that we can understand and sympathise with. Unlike most of the cast who have a one note trope or are generically 'good', Hortensia is allowed to be imperfect which ironically makes her a much more human character. I loved when she was just straight up mean to Veyle, for instance. Not forgiving others is a bad trait, but it makes her so much more real than Diamant who instantly forgives Ivy of her role in his father's death. Diamant's instant good-guy forgiveness doesn't make him admirable, it makes him boring and flawless, while Hortensia being a goblin sometimes makes her more relatable than half the cast.
For some reasons Hortensia became my favorite character in engage, I expected to hate her just for her voice alone but ended up being really invested in her character because she's such a well written figure. And she kicks ass on the battlefield
There have been some really silly wars in real life, the Lobster War and the Soup Pot War are some prime examples of just really dumb reasons humans have conflict with each other.
The only "smart" one made by this team is Echoes and that's because the base for it is a Kaga game which has very different vibes from modern entries, 3H might as well have been outsourced to Koei Tecmo with how much of the staff is from their end.
@@billvolk4236 Don't know about that, I don't play Warriors games, but I assume it wouldn't be too difficult to keep consistent especially when you realize the base inspiration for 3H when you remove the molemen vs dragons crap is the exact same story as the one for Dynasty Warriors (Romance of the three kingdoms).
There are a lot of really good supports but for my money the units with the most consistently good to great one are PANDREO AND ALCRYST (which coincidently there support together is also good)
I know I’m probably in the minority and I’m really trying with this game, but how in the hell did we go from three houses to this probably the only one that’s this disappointed. Three houses in my top three games on the Nintendo switch, and I am having to force myself to play this game to hope it gets better. Three houses had a deep narrative and more explored over several Playthru’s of the game. It’s still hard it’s lighthearted moments, but it actually had some depth
3H is a game mostly outsourced to Koei Tecmo (hell, even the 3 kingdoms thing is based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the same inspiration for Dynasty Warriors, one of KT's franchises), Engage was made by the "main" Intelligent Systems FE team around the same time as 3H was in development as a 30th anniversary game, it just released way later due to complications in development and then the pandemic made sure it wasn't ready in time. While both are FE games they're mostly made by entirely different people with very different sets of priorities.

I legitimately want Seadall, Chloe, and Merrin to end up as a throuple. Yes, I know Merrin and Seadall don't have supports, but damn it, these three are so adorable.
My cash money ship is pannette and amber. Girl basically like “ you’re an odd duck but I like odd ducks, wanna go out with me” and amber’s like “ cool I’m paying tho”. IT’S RIGHT THERE!!! 🤣🤣😭😭
Pannette supports are almost all good, the ones with ivy stand out to me partially cause it actually made me laugh and the VAs did a good job with them, also because both of them were my hard carries through my first maddening run both being tactical nukes on the different defenses
lmfao i had no idea about this jade rosado support but that has me 💀 i'm surprised there was no mention of lindon. i hear he got some good ones. also for a good amount of my playthrough i thought celine was just this disgusting loli character that wouldn't shut up about tea. then i saw people saying she's a unit you should definitely use and i saw her potential, she started to grow on me after. glad i gave her a chance. i really enjoyed zelkov's supports, especially the one with anna.
i loved jade the moment i saw her and the fact that shes a res tank?? so i put her on martial master and then she says shucks a doodles?? and i was found dead
Wow, you found way better supports than I did. I went the entire game and everyone just kept talking about training and food. Over and over and over and *over* again… I guess I just had the worst luck with who I was maining but, by the end of the game, my Doneness levels had reached a critical threshold.
Ivy supports make me lose my mind. Zelkov astral projecting for a headache medicine, Ivy about to faint when Panette takes her ghost hunting or being on the verge of tears when camping with Timerra. Comedic masterpiece.
panette and goldmary support is one of my favorite silly supports it's just panette trying to be more womanlike but failing miserably while goldmary is just trying to figure out how to help her. i also like etie and yunaka where etie basically hits on yunaka but yunaka thinking she's accusing her for stealing something important though idk if i was suppose to interpret it as etie hitting on yunaka but that's at least what it looked like too me. veyle and seadall is also hilarious seadall is feeling down because his fortunes feel off and veyle tries to help him bay doing the silly things his fortunes say and than telling him they where true but they never reveal if it was veyle just making up a story or if it actually happens.last i want too mention yunaka and alfred where she just can't believe how careless and trusting he is and just says all kinds of red flags and he just acts like it's normal business with her.
Honestly, a lot of Rosado's supports made me exhale strongly from my nose; it was unexpected. I also can't help but chuckle at Alfred's dumbassery here and there. He's so lovable. Or that support between Clanne and Louis... it's hard to pick favourites, honestly!
Dude, Vander is one of my favorite units, since I left him on the bench because he was overwhelmed by the new enemies I've missed him a lot... But now that I can see him trying to dance... I think I love him even more XD
Zelkov and Anna supports go from shady man offering candy to littlw girl to the two debating about artistic value and "Soul" in products, which ironically mirrors much of the discourse about Old FE and New FE.
Wait Marrin is a reverse trap and Rosado is a trap?! I...don't know what is life as I could kinda tell Marrin was maybe a tomboy but the ladder being a trap was very surprising I mean I know traps exist in fire emblem *cough* Forrest lol 😆
Yunaka is easily the biggest standout for me. She is probably one of my favorite FE characters ever. Her goofy side mixed with the darkness within is great. I also love her design.
Fogato and Rosado's supports are some of my favourites so far. It's just so funny to me that Rosado gets SO OFFENDED whenever Fogato says he isn't the cutest, and yet he still tries to fish for compliments whenever he gets the chance. Idk, it's just a really goofy dynamic. Rosado also has a funny support with Mauvier where he tries to teach him what cuteness is, describing it as making your stomach flutter and Mauvier says he felt that feeling once when he was hit by a poisoned arrow. Pandreo also tends to have really fun and goofy supports. He has such a talent for making everyone he interacts with howl. (I'm sooo mad that Pandreo doesn't have supports with Merrin, it would be so funny if he howled and she IMMEDIATELY gets super mad at him for saying something so vile in wolf) Alear's supports are also often really good by virtue of them being the bewildered straight-man for all these lunatics to bounce off of and it's funny every time. In general, most of the supports in this game are just so delightful and goofy and I love them for it

Ike and Soren's bluntness in general, Soren turning a discussion about sexism into a discussion of taxes, Soren having Goldmary in tears because he's taking none of her crap, Chloe having almost every Emblem she talks to be grateful they're ghosts because of her choice of food, Bunet asking Celica what her ring tastes like and Celica, (understandably) not wanting to be eaten, tells him to just let it be a mystery --only for his Chrom support to imply that he went ahead and tried it because now he wants to know what Bracelets taste like compared to Rings, with Chrom basically responding "Please don't lick Robin!"
This is a good point, but I think the bond conversations would be better if they were limited to the Emblem and the original ring holder (e.g. Marth and Alear) or those who have a lot in common (e.g.Ivy and Camilla).
That's why I believe in Tellius Supremacy!

The dumbness of the supports in this game is really amazing, from all the howls that the characters have to do with their supports with Pandreo (that Veyle's howl is the absolute cutest) to Etie calling Goldmary a "potato thief" and almost starting a war over a potato.
Pandreo and Pannete actually is probably the best support in my eyes. As a Christian tho, I very much wish they leaded more into a commentary of faith as to why he stayed with the church ( he’s always a super devout character it was RIGHT THERE!!! 🤣🤣😭) but them affirming their relationship and seeing someone just love and accept unguarded pannete was great

At first i hated the Wolf howl thing but he goes way beyond that and i love to see a priest/church character that is not an asshole in JRPG for once
(Veyle s howl with Pandreo) i love Flayn and Raphael s support, meaning i now NEED to see this support because it seems adorable and hilarious.
The funny thing about Yunaka is that she's actually not extroverted and happy-go-lucky at all.
You can tell by things like the C-Forgado Support that she actually hates being among many people.
Which I'm actually really glad they made her this way and not just "the meme character who does nothing but say "Zappy" alot".
I love her tho, even if she doesnt like so many people, at least she enjoys spending time with everyone, she even taught Tiki how to zappy

Honestly I am getting hit by a truck with some of these supports to be honest the feels are real and I didn't initially expect to get attached to these characters as much as I did

Helps that Ivy is an exceptional character in her own right. She's basically Camilla done correctly.
She's a very serious and composed individual, but her fear of ghosts allows her goofy side to shine through, along with how she gets embarrassed when she loses her composure. Her personality is a great foil to the regal appearance expected of royalty and none of it feels forced.
Kagetsu had a /lot/ of my favorite supports, but his with Boucheron was an especially big highlight. A lot of Ivy's supports also offer some surprising silliness to them that I can't help but love.
Kagetsu just want to kiss the homies goodnight and I admire him for that.
Ivy and Panette had me rolling. She got so scared she actually dropped her accent!
Etie and Yunaka's B support is absolutely hilarious in how Etie keeps insisting Yunaka stole something from her up till that point despite Yunaka proving it wasn't her doing. And then Yunaka's bewildered "huh" when Etie says "you've stolen my interest" absolutely sent me.

I loved some of Veyle’s supports. Her learning how to ride a wolf and nearly went off a cliff had me laughing. Then sharing her very spicy food with Alfred after teasing her expression was just too precious.
Ivy's supports involving ghosts, Seadall trying to understand Rosado's beauty regiment, Lindon using thunder is some weird way, Timerra making some of the cast sing, and Rosemary being savage to people who she sees as competition.
My favorite support has to be between Ivy and Panette and Ivy and Timera.
Just the general idea of the Solm party girls trying to get Ivy to get over her fear of ghosts is so funny to me. Between Panette bringing Ivy to a graveyard and Timera and Ivy singing about ghosts, those two conversations has to be my favorite in the game.
Timerra in general. Just about all her supports puts the other character in the most awkward of situations and WAY out of their comfort zone, and she's just playing it up like it's the time of her life XD I love Timerra's supports XD
Hortensia's supports made me love her so much. She deserves the world and the fact that Ivy, Rosado and Goldmary care a ton for her. I'm glad her supports helped me see the best sides of Hortensia.

Lindon seems like a pretty nothing character when you recruit him (he's literally a copy and paste of Wendell) but he has some pretty funny supports. He just loves using his thunder tome to do... everything.
Let Lindon in the kitchen, and he will literally cook up a storm.
one of my favourite supports from the game is the jean and Zelkov (or any jean support really). I just love how they bonded, their connection feels genuine, mixed with both melancholy and sweetness. We also finally learn something about Zelkov that *isn't* him being *quirky*
I hope you eventually do a comparison between the supports of 3H and Engage because I noticed how they are fundamentally different from one another
For example in the Alcryst/Citrinne support they drop the fact they are cousins but it's never mentioned again nor it would matter if it was removed from the conversation
Meanwhile if you transported this support to 3H it would probably open with this fact and then analyze why a technical member of the royal family is expected to serve and potentially die for the second prince of their nation or something along those lines
Likewise how we know so little about their world (I straight up forgot the name of the continent) while what Fodlan was and its situation was such a pivotal element of 3H it shaped its supports

This game has some of the funniest supports in my opinion. Zelkov and Pandreo alone can make engage take that title.
Pandreo is genuinely my favorite Engage character. 65 percent of his supports are goofy and the others are genuine critiques on the world's views on religion. His Mauvier and Veyle supports are so sweet. And his Alcryst support is equally goofy and sweet.
It helps that he's also one of the best units in the game.
His support with alcryst made me almost like alcryst so I'd say that was a hit as well, i get irritated with the inferiority complex trope

Two of my favorite supports in the game are Celine x Alcryst and Yunaka x Citrinne. Both are more serious though. Celine x Alcryst hit me because it was the first support outside of Alfred that wasn't about tea. I wasn't expecting it, but then bam! serious topic. A similar thing with Yunaka x Citrinne where I had at that point only had more fun and carefree supports with Citrinne so seeing her acting super serious instantly got my attention, and of course Yunaka is always a delight.
Honestly Citrine and Yunaka's supports has to be my favorite support in Engage. Fleshing out Yunaka's backstory and explaining why she acts the way she does in the main game is really interesting and kinda made her my favorite character in Engage.
It was also, that I remember, the ONLY Alcryst support where he wasn't his typical apologetic pessimistic sad sack that he usually is. He was being the genuine guy that was always there comforting Celice every night, telling her things to get her mind off of her nightmares, and then reassuring her that, nightmares they may be, he uses them to make sure that they DON'T come true. It was Alcryst being nothing but a serious, genuine caring guy to Celine. I love their support so much.

Are a few of my favorite silly support moments from me.
For an addition to the "surprisingly deep supports" list I offer Framme/Diamant. Framme is another character who has surprisingly good supports (when they don't center around her obsession with Alear) and her Diamant one goes in an interesting direction. Diamant encourages her in her history studies but this ends up leading to them having some uncomfortable discussions about Brodia's history and how Diamant plans on reforming their aggressive militaristic ways.
Alear with Goldmary or Zelkov are some of my favorite silly supports. Alear being the straight man to everyone else just makes them way funnier, and the fact that they still try to get on Zelkov's level just makes it better.
If there's any support you need to highlight, I would def recommend Kagetsu and Zelkov's support chain. The level of goofiness that transitions into such a wholesome ending that contrasts the initial relationship between Ivy, Zelkov and Kagetsu is seriously great!
A lot of Timerra's supports are really fun. Ivy, Diamant and Seadall come to mind.
Yunaka x Goldmary is a good one 'cause Laura Post is just that good of a voice actor.
Fogado x Rosado is pretty funny.
Ivy x Panette because ghosts.
In terms of serious supports Alrcyst x Seadall, Alcryst x Celine, Alcryst x Ivy and Ivy x Hortensia come to mind (Dang, Alcryst has a lot of good supports!).
A big one is definitely Alfred x Celine. That A-support is *HUGE* for Alfred's character.

All of Yunaka’s hits perfectly cuz they all a variation of her learning to accept herself and to open up to people and let her guard down a bit. Alfred especially cuz works cuz it’s great to watch his idealistic self interacting with an especiallly individual, and you all are know how good citrine’s is and with my own circumstances growing up I can relate a lot with yunaka’s goals she talks about in.
It’s like you write a character with complexities you get layered and deep interactions with other characters. It’s crazg how it works

I really like a lot of Lindon's supports and all the inventive uses for thunder magic he can find. Also Timerra's supports because she forces people to sing and it's great.
Good to see these! Only in my second playthrough, and Rosado in my first team and Hortensia and Merrin in my second, but at least was working my way up with Pandreo and Vander in the second one. I've come to really enjoy a lot of the light hearted and sillier supports in Engage, especially as I was a bit nervous that most of the early Firene characters weren't quite, uh, engaging to me (I did like Boucheron pretty quick though).
Man these supports make me realize that Three Houses characters have way too much trauma and don't have enough fun.
Yeah basically every 3 houses character needed therapy. Maybe that's what IS was going for with byleth, a brick wall that let's people vent.
That's why this support pool is super funny to me cuz for a person who was a sleep for 1000 year and was a murderbot up until then, Alear is like.... Freakishly good with people. He’s able to pick up a person’s cues and say the right thing nearly all the time, if they need it, guide them gently to a healthier mindset, and if he’s wrong he apologizes, and isn’t afaid to slide a compliment it. They sound like the perfect person to do a young justice speed therapy with the cast of Fodlan 🤣
@@yukotrey9422 Well Alerar does have the benefit of gaining a loving mom when Alear was stuck as a blank state. It was easy to carry over her love naturally.
While Engage’s writing is not the same level as Three houses. It’s not as bad as people making it out to be. It’s just a lighthearted and simple and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I really enjoyed the Merrin and Yunaka supports. I just love hearing people or characters dork out over their passions. Hell, they even helped me decide on who to give the pact ring to (It was Yunaka).
Having silly and fun moments is being human just as much as crying and wailing over a dead unit.
Hortensia should have annoyed me with how she acts like cute is everything but I enjoy her enough especially with Anna who has massive mesugaki energy.
Rosemary is ok same with Chloe. Both cute somewhat tropey but it works

These supports embodies engage well, a bit of dumb fun that knows its dumb, I really wish people wouldn't knock the game because it's dumb fun and not super dark and edgy like three houses was

The problem is that engage could be dumb fun without removing all of the effort. This is a problem the devs have because they think they can only do gameplay or story, not both, when that’s nonsense.
@RamenBomberDeluxe It really does feel like that's the case, yeah. There's no reason why IS can't double down and get the best of both worlds, when they've shown that they can do it on separate occasions.

I would rather they not fall down a rabbit hole of making their games have small casts, because that ruins the point of making an ARMY of characters. Yes, its harder to do that. Yes, many of them would stop being plot relevant after a point. Yes, they might have to consider the mix-and-match nature of who lives adn dies when it comes to the characters who ARE relevant if they dont just retreat when defeated.
But, they can do it, they can find a way to pull it off. These games usually sell pretty good nowadays, adn its time they took a long, hard look at this situation.
@RamenBomberDeluxe Agree 1000%. I've noticed in most modern FE's that the main story really only focuses on like 5 or so main characters. In Awakening it was Robin, Chrom, Lissa, Fred, and Lucina. In Fates it's Corrin, Azura and whatever Royal family you chose. In Engage it's Alear, Veyle and the Crown royals of each nation. Engage might be the worst case of it because the younger Royal siblings just stop showing up in cufscenes after a certain point (despite, imo, them often being more interesting than their older siblings), and half the Crown royals that do get consistent screentime do nothing with it. Alfred and Timerra just kind of stand there after the Firene and Solm arcs respectively.
3H was a step in the right direction because the game was able to account for you having a starting house of Byleth + 8 units to work with. Most students got to chime in during cutscenes even if a lot of dialogue was filler that could easily be cut if they died. But it still felt like a squad, *your* squad. Echoes similarly had various characters on each side like the Villagers/Deliverance on Alm's side, and Mae, Boey, Saber and Valbar on Celica's side. They actually chimed in during cutscenes and it felt like your whole army was relevant in the end, despite the game being the Alm and Celica show at the end of the day.
One of the reasons why Radiant Dawn is my favorite game is because of the multiple army approach the game had. That, alongside the base convos (they need to bring those back), gave you factions that were small yet distinct enough to where you can have people who aren't the MC and they're inner circle of 4 dudes be important. Small moments like Tauroneo being present in most of the lategame Dawn Brigade scenes, or Soren and Skrimir's bantering in the war council stick out to me as a cool little things the game did. Hell, *Geoffrey* of all people was basically a minor Lord in a few maps.
Tl;dr, it seems like games where the rosters are split tend to have more fleshed out character input, from my experience.
My favorite part about the Pandreo Vander support has to be that Pandreo has about the same reaction to Vander learning to dance as he as to finding out Alear is the divine dragon

Zelkov and Alear’s support made me like Alear a lot. When she started mimicking Zelkov’s way of speaking, I completely lost it
Alcryst's supports with Alear are really great to me in a way that got me to appreciate his character. My first impression wasn't good. I thought they were playing up his meekness similar to Bernadetta in Three Houses, and her panicking in almost every support stopped being funny or relatable after a while. But his apologizing to a wolf about to attack them, and it actually working was pretty funny. My partner who hasn't played the game, overheard the C support and instantly said "I love him". This, alongside his other more serious conversations, I can't help but agree. We have a pretty lovable cast of characters here.
Some of the funniest guys I know were members of the armed forces, mainly the US Army or US Marine Corps. For some reason these guys have an amazing sense of humor. So if people think that being a soldier means you can't have fun, Fire Emblem and real life prove that they do have fun when it is necessary.
Some people really need to get that.

I admittedly do find a lot of Engage's supports a bit bland, but there are two characters in particular that I love.
Zelkov is just a weird but stellar guy and his 'gimmick' of overenunciation is one of the least intrusive in the game allowing him to be more of an actual character.
Then there's Hortensia, who I was convinced I was going to hate, but ended up really liking. Her outfit and initial impression made me sure she was going to be awful, but what sold her to me is that she's one of the few characters with flaws that are allowed to be flaws. She craves her old life to the point of doing bad things to achieve it, she loves her father to the point of ignoring his clearly evil tendencies and she gets frustrated when her attempts to fix her life never go her way. These are all reasonable actions that we can understand and sympathise with. Unlike most of the cast who have a one note trope or are generically 'good', Hortensia is allowed to be imperfect which ironically makes her a much more human character.
I loved when she was just straight up mean to Veyle, for instance. Not forgiving others is a bad trait, but it makes her so much more real than Diamant who instantly forgives Ivy of her role in his father's death. Diamant's instant good-guy forgiveness doesn't make him admirable, it makes him boring and flawless, while Hortensia being a goblin sometimes makes her more relatable than half the cast.
Wasn't expecting a "hilariously dumb" video to be this positive. But you're right, I got a good laugh.

For some reasons Hortensia became my favorite character in engage, I expected to hate her just for her voice alone but ended up being really invested in her character because she's such a well written figure. And she kicks ass on the battlefield
They can't make two smart Fire Emblem games in a row. They need a dumb one in between. I guess it's tradition.

There have been some really silly wars in real life, the Lobster War and the Soup Pot War are some prime examples of just really dumb reasons humans have conflict with each other.
The only "smart" one made by this team is Echoes and that's because the base for it is a Kaga game which has very different vibes from modern entries, 3H might as well have been outsourced to Koei Tecmo with how much of the staff is from their end.

There are a lot of really good supports but for my money the units with the most consistently good to great one are
PANDREO AND ALCRYST (which coincidently there support together is also good)
I know I’m probably in the minority and I’m really trying with this game, but how in the hell did we go from three houses to this probably the only one that’s this disappointed. Three houses in my top three games on the Nintendo switch, and I am having to force myself to play this game to hope it gets better. Three houses had a deep narrative and more explored over several Playthru’s of the game. It’s still hard it’s lighthearted moments, but it actually had some depth
3H is a game mostly outsourced to Koei Tecmo (hell, even the 3 kingdoms thing is based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the same inspiration for Dynasty Warriors, one of KT's franchises), Engage was made by the "main" Intelligent Systems FE team around the same time as 3H was in development as a 30th anniversary game, it just released way later due to complications in development and then the pandemic made sure it wasn't ready in time. While both are FE games they're mostly made by entirely different people with very different sets of priorities.
Ew, imagine saying 3H 4 different routes with reused designs and half shared story + mobile game dailies levels of grinding is like ...... preferred

I guess I just had the worst luck with who I was maining but, by the end of the game, my Doneness levels had reached a critical threshold.
Ivy supports make me lose my mind. Zelkov astral projecting for a headache medicine, Ivy about to faint when Panette takes her ghost hunting or being on the verge of tears when camping with Timerra. Comedic masterpiece.

panette and goldmary support is one of my favorite silly supports it's just panette trying to be more womanlike but failing miserably while goldmary is just trying to figure out how to help her. i also like etie and yunaka where etie basically hits on yunaka but yunaka thinking she's accusing her for stealing something important though idk if i was suppose to interpret it as etie hitting on yunaka but that's at least what it looked like too me. veyle and seadall is also hilarious seadall is feeling down because his fortunes feel off and veyle tries to help him bay doing the silly things his fortunes say and than telling him they where true but they never reveal if it was veyle just making up a story or if it actually happens.last i want too mention yunaka and alfred where she just can't believe how careless and trusting he is and just says all kinds of red flags and he just acts like it's normal business with her.
Hortensia and Celine had be going, "Why do I ship this? WHY DO I SHIP THIS!?"

Honestly, a lot of Rosado's supports made me exhale strongly from my nose; it was unexpected. I also can't help but chuckle at Alfred's dumbassery here and there. He's so lovable. Or that support between Clanne and Louis... it's hard to pick favourites, honestly!

Dude, Vander is one of my favorite units, since I left him on the bench because he was overwhelmed by the new enemies I've missed him a lot... But now that I can see him trying to dance... I think I love him even more XD
Zelkov and Anna supports go from shady man offering candy to littlw girl to the two debating about artistic value and "Soul" in products, which ironically mirrors much of the discourse about Old FE and New FE.
Wait Marrin is a reverse trap and Rosado is a trap?! I...don't know what is life as I could kinda tell Marrin was maybe a tomboy but the ladder being a trap was very surprising I mean I know traps exist in fire emblem *cough* Forrest lol 😆

Yunaka is easily the biggest standout for me. She is probably one of my favorite FE characters ever. Her goofy side mixed with the darkness within is great. I also love her design.
I absolutely love the Vander and Lindon supports. Too old guys with bad backs contemplating forbidden sorcery to relieve back pain xD

Fogato and Rosado's supports are some of my favourites so far. It's just so funny to me that Rosado gets SO OFFENDED whenever Fogato says he isn't the cutest, and yet he still tries to fish for compliments whenever he gets the chance. Idk, it's just a really goofy dynamic.
Rosado also has a funny support with Mauvier where he tries to teach him what cuteness is, describing it as making your stomach flutter and Mauvier says he felt that feeling once when he was hit by a poisoned arrow.
Pandreo also tends to have really fun and goofy supports. He has such a talent for making everyone he interacts with howl. (I'm sooo mad that Pandreo doesn't have supports with Merrin, it would be so funny if he howled and she IMMEDIATELY gets super mad at him for saying something so vile in wolf)
Alear's supports are also often really good by virtue of them being the bewildered straight-man for all these lunatics to bounce off of and it's funny every time.
In general, most of the supports in this game are just so delightful and goofy and I love them for it
This game has AMAZING supports and it feels humorous and just like three houses, I grew closer to the characters this way.
