I can’t remember one game were thieves were so weak that the needed extra protection. I just made sure I had one thief as part of my core team so they always levelled along and all was zappy. Gaius even makes a better showing on Lunatic+ Awakening then almost all of the initial shepherds.
But isn't all thieves destroys except Matthew? But even then, once promoted he's a combat unit, it's just they are kinda weaker but more agile myrmidon so they need more help before kicking

On Chapter 21 of my playthrough she was legit defending the entrance to Veyle's room solo against that huge trash mob. It was hilarious.
