I am not very religious, but if there is anything that could ever make me believe in the existence of a higher power, a god, would be the magnitude of the beauty in this music. It is hard for me to believe (even though I do) a man, a human being created such music, such harmony and perfection. And that all these can move others in the way they do. Unbeliveble.

God inspired all great art. By "great" i mean even 500 or more years in the future people will listen to music like this.

How beautiful, good to remember that such things can be made by humans, and not just the terrible that we see and hear about every day.

    • @michelcouzijn5862
      @michelcouzijn5862 6 лет назад +1

It is also good to remember that there are music lovers out there who find this (beautiful) music equally 'terrible' as you find the music of their preference.
To each their own. Let us not look down on each other's preferences. There is ample room for all.

She is not referring to others’ musical preferences, or any preferences. She is referring to the general shortcomings of humankind: violence; hatred; decay.

Michael: I hate almost all current pop " music" , because it is so limited in its creativity / variety.....had neighbours who tortured us with frequent all night parties : loud , banale pop stuff , huge stress no sleep, etc, and police wouldn't help. Have instant aversion now to all pop stuff, especially with deep bass beat, and have you noticed the almost mechanical drum beats, so similar every time.
The " covers" you get in shops are even worse !
Over loud pop ' music ' is used as sleep deprivation torture.....
And I could cry when I hear a car go by, with far too loud pop stuff battering babies' ears inside the car : very bad.
Pop fans who know only that shallow genre have been heard to say classical music like this is " boring" !
They say " We're waiting for the beat to start!"
      Insensitive folks!
' Classical ' can be so sublime.
I wish I could get them to listen, let it wash over them, and let them feel the exhilarating effects .
The religious works are so often uplifting, even to an atheist like me !
Elijah in full swing is amazing, also The Creation, and so many others.
I am constantly in awe of the vast variety of classical music, symphonies, choral, etc.
Rachmaninov's All night vigil playing right now: such a lovely comforting sound, and all those singers having put so much time and effort into learning it, then to share it with the rest of us.We are so fortubate to have this exhaustible, huge quantity of wonderful classical music : we can never get through it all !
      But it's fun trying....
By the way, I do like some groups of the sixties, e.g. Crosby stills & co., "pre druggy" Beatles, Brubeck, and one of those instant favourites, Green Onions !
Still like it after over 50 years.
      ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺

      Whoops, my
post was much longer, but only about half appeared here !
I just wanted to say that over all, pop stuff really hasn't the solid, life enhancing value that classical has, and it is now generally deeply unsatisfying: so much the same all the time, with wailing, yelling, slurring notes, harsh tones, and appalling how many radio stations do nothing else.
They don't know what they're missing.
Many thanks again for being able to come here and soak up so much beauty.
So many people of a like mind, enjoying and sharing this wonderful heritage.

This Rachmaninov' s work is quite " cantabile", very melodical, very soft. Is has a very distinguished inspiration. The choir is excellent, however the soloist woman voice is not good enough in her voice register, this must be performed by thicker one. Direction is excellent, no voices shiver when the finales are piano or pianissimo. Low parts are very good sung, male voices help with an excellent deepness and basses. This work requires all this choir has, good direction, powerful voices, beauty, and love to sing. Excellent.

Listening to this superb rendition, I remembered a true story told by a famous Canadian jazz musician. He was playing in Toronto Royal York Hotel's famous Imperial Room a jazz piece and at the end amid general applause, a gentleman approached the orchestra, took off his hat and deeply bowed to the musicians. He was paying tribute to another kind of music played with heart and deep soul. The musicians were frozen and all they could do was to watch Rachmaninov leave.

    (guest).
    Wonderful performance.
    What a huge team effort.
( and I know what it takes to hold the equivalent of 3 large oratorios in one's head at the same time,
so that's why I appreciate this).
Good recording here: even with my cheap little earbuds, I could still hear the separate parts well.
Must find out more about the composer's approach to the whole work:
e.g., how many % of melodies were from the standard church services,
and how much creative , original memories did Rachmaninov add ?
I love this work: must learn it.
I heard a mesmerising, deeply affecting rendition at St. Cross,
near Winchester by Romsey Choral Society, a few years ago.
Truly an " altered state of consciousness " .
    Wonderful.
Pop fans just don't know what they're missing, do they?!☺☺☺
On this video, I cannot see the name of the choir, conductor , date or location....
    Can anyone please say?
    ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
    Sublime music, beautifully sung.

So here I was thinking that this choir lacked a proper bass octavist to give the extreme lows the right authority, and then someone releases the G1 at the end of mvt.11. Wasn't expecting that, kudos! Too bad about the Bb1 in mvt. 5, but hey, you win some and you lose some.
Otherwise this is a good performance, marred only by being way too quick in critical places (mvt.5, "Yeshe, yesi.." and the verses in mvt. 11).
