I write this through tears. I am a performer, composer and recording engineer and this is simply the best version I have ever heard in my life. Infinitely more than the sum of its parts , this is frankly beyond human description. If one had to present the Requiem to Mozart today , this would have to be the one. If he can hear it from heaven he must be pretty happy with it!
Bravo !!
It's very refreshing to hear this great work performed with a professional choir and top-notch instrumentalists. Also it's great to see and hear real 18th century basset horns whose unique sound is so crucial to an authentic performance of this work. This is one of the best performances I've heard of this work in recent years
Incredible performance! At first I was unimpressed by the meager choir and small orchestra; I am not one for experimentation with such major works. But by the end of Dies Irae I was totally smitten! What lucidity! What clarity of thought and sound! What sublime pleasure in beholding this small ensemble delivering such a tremendous work with such tender power and delicate force! Simply awesome!!
And now, after Covid the choir is half of what you see here. Lol, went to several of their performances. Messiah by Handel, Matthew Passion. Just 6 male singers, 4 female, 4 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 bass. I'm so dissatisfied, I guess not enough money to pay for a bigger orchestra.
Maybe getting a bigger orchestra wasn't the issue because orchestra members also could be overcome with Covid-19 too and that certainly adds to the equation, not money 🤔
Indeed, I just got back from a performance of the same piece on May 20, 2023. Again the Concertgebouw, conductor Pieter Jan Leusink and soprano Olga Zienoviva - but an even smaller ensemble than in this video. So, I was equally unimpressed when I saw the small stage. By the end I had lost all doubt - with the right talent end acoustics even a relatively small group can make great sound...
I have never heard of this orchestra before. This is surely a great performance by top-notch professional players. I wish I could enjoy Mozart's Great Mass K.427 performed by this orchestra on RUclips someday soon.
Chapeau!!
This conductor's style reminds me of Leonard Bernstein in his most "bouncy and over the top" mode but in some ways that just adds to the pleasure of the video. The music is beautiful and it ought to be a punishable offence to insert ads into it haha Thank you
This is major league. It's much more historically accurate than the huge staged concert versions out there. The conductor Leusink is extremely interesting; acts like he does this all the time, like it's no big deal. These people are clearly familiar with Latin, and they treat the psychic breaks between parts with respect due to the course of the Mass. And the players are WAY good. What is also very cool is how much power they produce from such a small ensemble. Note in the volume in "Confutatus ..." with only 18 voices! The soprano Olga Zinovieva is a total babe and 101% clear. The trumpet player on "Tuba ..." is a huge part and it's just perfect. Wonder how hard that is? You probably have to be really relaxed. That singer Sytse Buwalda is a counter-tenor which is highest male singing voice there is - I think this is historical as well, because Bach, et. al., relied on strong voices to offset the female soprano somewhat in the choral works. Yet Mr. Buwalda does not overdo, he tempers with aplomb! So there is something to be said about small production, that you can get closer to the source (authenticity is "nice") yet still maintain the grandness of the theme. Sure and we can apply 21st century virtuosity to other stuff, but doesn't it make sense to put Mozart on a small-scale, in his home town, where people went to church. I'm going to listen to it over and over. Wish I could afford these folks for my funeral mass!
True this is of great quality I totally agree...sound is clear and brings the celestial touch Mozart surely had in his mind. Requiem is for my sensibility, one of the most if not the most incredible score ever written. It trespasses human limits. 10/10.
in my long life in the word of music i have never seen a conductor to participay and enjoy the music in the way of Pieter Han Leusink! He is Fantastic! I don't undurstund haw the musicians go after hum but everything is perfect. Every one looks at him and he don't give no une entrance o tempo but he lives every moment of the music with every cellule of his body! Long life fear Pieter and hope to see more of Mozart, Haydn,Haendel and Vivaldi of you....
Nice straightforward performance. The tempo is a bit faster than I am used to. but the clean dynamics make up for it. SPECTACULAR alto choir and soloist.
Was privileged to attend this performance in March 2015 at Concertgebouw, was so good we flew back to the Netherlands to see again at the Grote Kerk in The Hague this past February, had a chance to speak with Martinus, a wonderful man and an amazing tenor. Can't wait to go back. Spectacular Bliss.
I love so much this masterpiece, that's why I added it to a playlist some time ago; it inspires and energizes me when I work. It's really exquisite for the ears, but today for the first time a sound ad with high volume interrupted at minute 20 this amazing performance. Hopefully, it doesn't happen always because such a beautiful composition is worth listening to in a complete state of peace and relaxation.
Wow. One of the greatest period performances of the requiem I've ever heard -- Bravo! The lack of rubato in those movements in particular seems to really amplify a seemless harmonic continuity that serves to strengthen the proceeding harmony, ultimately giving the piece stronger momentum and unity --- this is usually missing in most performances.
A great way to spend time! Delight and dazzling brilliance! Luxurious room and it's music, sounding in us and our hearts! Thank you for these emotions and feelings, the memory of them for many years will remain with us!
An excellent historically informed performance. Pitched at A=430. The countertenor, gut strung instruments, basset horns, period trombones, trumpets and timpani. Notice how the Soprano and Countertenor also sing with the choir when possible. A small orchestra and choir is much more appropriate and historically correct. A brilliant recording, so clear, well articulated and imho, the tempi are not inappropriate. A well considered performance. Only wish I'd been there to hear it live.
My favorite Mozart requiem right now!. Amazing! On a side note Leusink at the end of Lacrimosa is banging the timpani on his music stand, as hard as he can, clearly calling for more timpani. What drummer ever chooses to play softer?? 🤔
Fantasties. Baie mooi! In my opinion, a small orchestra and choir is best. Most conductors overdo it with big choirs. Bravo, Pieter Jan Leusink. Nice tempo throughout.

I totally agree with this comment. Thank you.
Maybe a little bit tooooo fast...
Leusink just straight vibing for 49 minutes
What a great performance! Mr Leusink at 8:38... how could you not give your all as a singer with this conducting??
The depth of this Requiem is immeasurable, and unimaginable
This Requiem embodies the musical aesthetics of Mozart
Bravo !!
I did not expect such power from such small choir
It's very refreshing to hear this great work performed with a professional choir and top-notch instrumentalists. Finally a performance with the audio quality it deserves. Amazing work, true professionals.
There is a place for everybody in this world. This conductor is unique, and the music he creates again is precisely magnificent!
OMG. Grateful beyond words for this. Breathtaking. Tear making. Yet I feel like dancing!
Almost flawless and so deeply felt. One can feel the agony of Mozart. Bravo!!
The conductor is really into the music. Great performance.
Absolutely LOVE that conductor.
Bravo !
Best performance in decades.
I have never heard of this orchestra before. This is surely a great performance by top-notch professional players. I wish I could enjoy Mozart's Great Mass K.427 performed by this orchestra on RUclips someday soon.
The greatest heavy metal album ever!

Thank you
But Bernstein smiled occasionally while conducting.

Patrick Cardiff i went to a concert with this conductor a few weeks ago.he is fabulous and has a good sense of humor too

The tempos are far from being historically accurate.
@pretty boy Yes I think there is always a place for style and interpretation
Blessings and peace pretty boy
17:56 *Genial.*

geniaal
Prachtige uitvoering, geniaal geleid
Best performance I have ever seen! Big fan of Pieter Jan Leusink.
Dies irae is the best part ¡awesome!
Braviiiisiiiimoooo!!!!!

A fine, clean performance. First time, I've heard a performance of this work with a countertenor.
Nice straightforward performance. The tempo is a bit faster than I am used to. but the clean dynamics make up for it. SPECTACULAR alto choir and soloist.
Twoset brought me here!
Hihi same
Great to hear every vocal line with such clarity.. they are usually a muddle with larger choral ensembles .
Jaw dropping good stuff. This is the real deal. Bravo!!
the conductor is amazing ...
After 40 years finally I saw something that made me proud to be Dutch.
I love so much this masterpiece, that's why I added it to a playlist some time ago; it inspires and energizes me when I work. Wow...this is one of the most beautiful versions I have heard. I saw they are near me in March..definitely going!
Excellent musicians, but a little bit too fast, imo.
i saw this live with the exact same musicians in concergebouw
Perfect, fantastic and amazing
Went to the concert for the second time yesterday. Wonderful
Heb dit vandaag in het Concertgebouw gezien. Wonderschoon! Vooral Miserere Mei Deus... Wow!
Geweldig was het he? Ik heb zelfs een traantje weggepinkt. Overweldigend .
How exotic Mr. Leusink is.
JAJAJA HE'is not the director it's a dancer jajajaja
He is very entertaining. Constantly making me smile
"exotic" isn't the word I'd necessarily use to describe maestro here...lol

Wonderful performance of this camber orchestra version!

Terrific performance! Solid low brass...The "Tuba Mirum" solo was stunning especially since it so hard to produce an open sound on those instruments.
Toll.Toll.Toll
This performance sounds very unique. It's very interesting to see how devoted these people create the sounds they make.
Señor Buwalda Ud, es estupendo
The Definitive performance of this musical masterwork!!! Thank you!!❤❤❤
I just love this interpretation. So powerful. Cograts to whole crew. =)
Just beautiful and Nothing else!!!
super performance, vivid and touching !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A great way to spend time!
Delight and dazzling brilliance! Luxurious room and it's music, sounding in us and our hearts! Thank you for these emotions and feelings, the memory of them for many years will remain with us!

Outstanding! Excellent performance. Thank you, Beleef Klassiek.

This is definitely a very underrated interpretation of the work! Bravo✨
saya paling suka lagu Dies Irae......top markotop
excellent tempo and articulations. awesome balance too :)
Brilliant realization! Well done.
19 Februari jl live meegemaakt.
Prachtige uitvoering, vooral Domine Jesu;
Gisteren naar concert geweest.adembenemend mooi

If Mozart was alive today, he most likely would have appreciated this performance.

10:43 *¡Qué pasaje tan rítmicamente delicioso!*
Wunderschön!
💯🎵 awesome, thanks 🥹❤️❤️💯💯💯
MOZART...JUST THE BEST ONE
My favorite Mozart requiem right now!. Amazing! On a side note Leusink at the end of Lacrimosa is banging the timpani on his music stand, as hard as he can, clearly calling for more timpani. What drummer ever chooses to play softer?? 🤔
I wish introitus and kyrie were about 10% slower, but other than that this is perfect.
umas das melhores interpretações que ja vi
Impresionante ,genial ,todo.
Magnifique ! Hermoso ! Hervorragend !
Bravo, excelso
So good
Beautiful! Ochen krasivo sigrali! Bravo Netherlands.
Excellent
beauty in the heaven
Easily the best performance of this
I can understand what singers saying???? marvelous
Absulut genial kompliment
flawless. original interpretation with tempo changes
Magnifico, perfecto
i love the very left vocalist, she is awesome !
Fantasties. Baie mooi! In my opinion, a small orchestra and choir is best. Most conductors overdo it with big choirs. Bravo, Pieter Jan Leusink. Nice tempo throughout.
grandissima interpretazione bravissimi
