I had the pleasure of visiting the set at Pinewood and interview the creature fx guys. Years later I became friends with the amazing Bill Hootkins through my radio work...so sad he passed away far too soon. This was a great movie, and the creature fx guys later went on to lead the work on Farscape and many other great sci-fi to shows and movies.

Quick fun facts: David S. Goyer and Stephen Norrington worked togther on Blade. They apparently didn't like each other or rather Norrington always put Goyer down.
Wonder how true that is since Brad Dourif's "Agent of Chaos" monologue is strikingly similar to Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight", which was written by Goyer.
Also, Brad Dourif was supposedly Tim Burton's first choice to play the Joker in 1989 Batman.

Honestly this movie is awesome. All actors are good, effects still hold up, some cheesy sound effects here and there but I believe that was intentional, just like the callbacks to other movies like Terminator, Aliens, etc. And of course, Brad Dourif is the cherry on top.

It does make you wonder what TF goes threw the minds of studio execs sometimes. Like I keep wondering who was the coked out asshole that thought adding that horrible POS CG scene of the monster at the end of The Thing (2011) was a great idea when it had all the potential to measure up to The Thing (1982). Like I would truly love to know who okayed those decisions so I could keep an eye out for them so I could kick them in the nuts if I ever came across them. Oh yeah, and to ask him what drugs he was on at the time to ruin what could have been an amazing movie. And then I'd kick him in the balls one more time, so hard I'd break my leg (it'd absolutely be worth it).

That entire movie's practical effects scenes were literally thrown out after spending millions on them, not just a single scene, but ALL OF THEM. Not sure who was acting Exec at the time, but pretty sure he faced some kind of jail sentence for destroying the footage against director's wishes before the movie was altered & bombed.

THIS is the most 90's movie ever made. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the scope, the script, the depth of some of the main characters and how well realized this nightmare corporate tech company building was. Of course it could've definitely benefited from some cuts and a bigger budget. Their were some sequences that were very well done with the animatronics, and whatever puppet they used was always done well within the scale of the other actors on-set. The lighting was well done and it explored some concepts I've never really seen done. It was however, a shameless "borrower" of many cliches, but it did have at least one pretty compelling villain orchestrating the whole thing. It was nice to see some acting chops on "most" of the main characters, though the ending is a bit anti-climactic. Its also two hours long and somehow doesn't feel like its two hours long *edit* I didn't realize I was clearly watching the directors cut and it is the version I would recommend watching.

    Very good review!
This movie looks awesome and very funny! I have to watch it!
I'm from Germany, and this is one of the rare cases, that a violent movie was in my country released uncut, but not in the U.S. Mostly it is the other way around. Many violent action- and horror-movies are only released cut in Germany, because the uncut versions were indexed or even seized. Our authorities are not really tolerant to movies. :(
But thank God for the internet! :D
And for Austria, our also german-speaking neighbour country, which doesn't have that problem! We import the most uncut DVDs from there.
PS: Sorry for my bad English. I'm still learning.

Great review! This is one of my favorite films, it's always nice to hear people talk about it.
Fun fact: you think the US dvd release is bad? A French dub was released on VHS in Canada, and it somehow managed to be ten times as worse. I bought a copy of it for fun a few years ago, and pretty much every scene that isn't an action scene is missing! Dante doesn't even get an introduction with Cale; he just randomly shows up and kills Ridley. It's the weirdest thing.
Read that Hardware was one of your personal faves, i hope to see you talk about it soon! I first heard about it because Death Machine kept getting compared to it, and laughed a lot when i recognized Hootkins as the gross neighboor, haha.

It is so severely flawed, but there is so much to love, which honestly surprised me (I've seen almost all of Brad's 90's movies, and WOW). I have GOT to find me that director's cut. We could always sense that the movie was so close to being good, but it looked like it got edited by a Death Machine. This explains so much. PS I met Brad at a Con and he is a total sweetheart. While the U.S. cut was released on LD, P&S, the uncut letterboxed version was released on LaserDisc twice in Japan. The first release is your typical 3 sided affair for a film of this length. The second release, however, [MGLC-99136] takes up just one disc, holding the record of longest running time for an NTSC LD: 61 minutes 3 seconds on each side. This was accomplished by using CAA65s for each side. In English with (out of picture) Japanese subtitles.

Wish Stephen Norrington would come back to directing , I love Blade & The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen , think all the feuding with Sean Connery on the set off TLOEG put him off directing a movie again, such a shame cos he is very talented ..BLADE is easily in my top 5 fav vampire flicks , btw gr8 vid as per =)

Great review as always. I love this movie. Grew up on it and a huge fan since I was 14 (year it was released) I still own the ex-rental vhs and have it dvd. Still waiting for a ultimate directors edition that's not aimed at the German Market. They don't make epic movies like this anymore. Grungy, kool cyber punk movies.

Um, no it doesn’t. That’s clearly painted with a brush, not a spray can.

Young Rachel Weisz, Brad Douriff ,one of the most under-celebrated actors off all time(except by genre fans) and the always amazing Richard Brake FTW I loved this movie

What I remember most from this film was how the Death Machine was completely immune to every caliber of bullet under the sun, but the cyborg guy could hurt it with his clumsy punches.

You're right, the old german DVD had only German audio but you can get a 3-Disc Collector's Edition by now (DVD, Blu-Ray & Soundtrack) by Turbine Media which has the original american audio along with a new cover artwork.
By the way, in the UK there was also a Director's Cut Release on DVD as we speak ;)

I loved this movie! The loser guy who gets transformed into a cybernetic super soldier goes in so hard when he jumps the death machine in the elevator and takes it on in hand to hand combat when he ran out of ammunition.

One of the first movies I owned on DVD back when the players were moderately affordable and only single layer (yes, I'm talking predating the Matrix DVD release). Such a great film. Wish I still have it :(

ok so I commented on leviathan so here is what I have to say about death machine. My story about the movie death machine is rather simple at first. I must first tell all of your reading this that I am a science-fiction and movie fan across-the-board anything from terminator to Star Trek. I don't know when I formed this memory but when I was a kid I knew of a movie that had a scene in an elevator with robotic claw/hand things... Cut to a few years later when I was at my grandmothers apartment in Boston for the weekend and she took me to the local Blockbuster. I was searching the isles like I normally would do on every Friday or Saturday evening to find the VHS copy of death machine which rather prominently features metallic claws. Being a kid at the time I can't remember how old are you immediately snapped into I must have this mode and convinced my grandmother to open up a blockbuster account that very afternoon and with heavy anticipation could not wait to get back to her apartment to watch the movie. Unfortunately the guys would have it that I would not watch the film that evening when I put the VHS tape in the player all I got was the opening credits and then of course static. Not to be outdone when I arrived home the following Monday I told my dad I had to order a movie called definition as I had found out when I found the VHS cover at Blockbuster that weekend. Two weeks later (back then ordering a movie to own took much longer than today) my DVD copy of the film arrived and all my god I'll never forget the first time I washed the movie all the way through it was simply amazing. While not amazing and Oscar worthy this film holds a special place in my heart as well as my childhood and to be honest as a science-fiction fan the design of the main creature the voice of Chucky as the bad guy and of course the overall story and or idea of this film make it as far as I'm concerned a must watch for any fan of cinema new or old. I mean seriously look at the creature effects in this film and tell me you wouldn't shit your pants if you saw this in real life. Anyway great video review and again I have subscribed to you from your leviathan video which is equally impressive.
