In this video I discuss the question "What other Companies are you Interviewing with? | Are you Actively Interviewing? | Best answer", variations on this question: where else are you interviewing, what types of jobs have you applied for, are you applying for other positions, what other opportunities are you considering, recruiter, what recruiters are looking for, a candidate with no issues, an opportunity to say you’re interested or excited about this job, a chance to justify a long work gap, never disclose names or company names, organization names, if they like you, they might speed up, or accommodate, recruiters always want you to tell them everything, the reasoning it will be good for you. Recruiters are not your friends, and answering your questions.

It is helpful, but I think it depends on the position, for example I am a Senior Web Developer and with my skillset I can pretty much pick my job where I live. So if I say I am Interviewing with multiple companies, i will get very competitive offers or even get asked what they would need to offer me to work with them.

As a manager, I interviewed a candidate who told us that they already had an offer from another company. We learned this from the candidate at their first contact with our recruiter. That information did light a fire under us to interview the candidate quickly and decide quickly. We loved the candidate, hired them, and they are still with the company 4 years later.
So I think the right way to answer this question is very dependent upon the situation.

The other way to see this, if you are asked this question and you tell them you already have an offer. It shows them that you are valuable, you are not just in a process.. you have a job offer. Yet you still go to this interview which means you are still interested in what they have to offer and you have nothing to lose.

I am almost ashamed to say that, but I think I was so nervous and still inexperienced in the interview process, that I really compiled a list and.. gave it to them.

When I get this question, I typically deflect. Companies will sometimes hold out so that if you are not off the market after some time, they can lowball. I at most respond with I am casually fielding requests for interviews but focus more on the right fit as opposed to any fit. There question is always, "What determines the right fit?" which allows me to speak slightly on my skillset, desire for internal growth, and work-life balance. Like relationships, most businesses don't want someone that no one else wants. The key here is being vague and pivot into other questions that you are well prepared to field.

Fresh out of grad school I answered this question honestly. I had just interviewed with another company, but did not have an offer and did not know if I would get one. I admitted this while on an onsite interview, so last step in the process. The very next day I got a call from the HR recruiter offering me the job with $10,000 more than I wrote down on my salary expectations. I am hardly an expert, but if you don't currently have a job and just got a degree, than it there is something wrong if you AREN'T pursuing multiple opportunities.

I like your mentality of not giving everything to the recruiter, which is contrary to what a lot of other youtubers (recruiters), recommend. Unless they are going to be 100% transparent with you, you shouldn’t feel like the company knows everything about you and you know nothing about them.

I can only add that in my case I didn't get a job once I had told on the very last step that I was interviewing with other companies. Everything was just fine until I said these words. The big boss was like "wait, are you actively interviewing?". Since that moment he started to look like he is not interested anymore. Seems my statement hurt his feelings about his best company on the market.

I told them Yes and I got the offer immediately right after the first interview. I think it only works if you are the top performer in your industry. If you are new or still improving, pls say no. For example, when Lebron James or Kevin Durant is free agent in off season. Everyone and their mother knows various team is pitching their team to these stars. Make sure you are top performer. That's very important.

Your videos are excellent. My perspective as a CEO who hires people who most often are new to my industry: I'm always hoping that candidates will say "Yes, I'm applying to every shop in town, whether they are advertising or not, because I've realized that this is the sector for me and I'm determined to find a way in." This tells me a lot about their motivation and personality. If they say my company is the only place they have approached, it usually signifies a low level of commitment.

This part scares me the most. Unfortunately I’ve told them both no because I thought it was a “gotcha” question 🤦🏽‍♀️. Like let’s trip her up.
I haven’t any offers yet, but I’m interviewing with 2 companies.
1st is nice, family business, more pay, but I have to travel between offices, and not the same level of benefits I currently have. So it almost feels like a draining job. But I can manage.
2nd is AMAZING and satisfies everything and I want that above all
However if I don’t get the amazing one, I will take the other one.
I’m just scared about jinxing it and opening my big mouth.
My current job is awful and has me sick.

The answer should be: NUNYA!....nunya bidness...........!

I feel like honesty is the best policy with this question. This helps the recruiter understand their timeline with hiring people including yourself. It's not necessarily trying to show you're in demand. It's just business ethics. Everyone understands that you're applying for multiple jobs during a job search. You don't have to give details. Just state that yes you are in the interview process or whatever with other companies. You never want to get hired by being deceitful and hiding details. You might get hired but you can also get fired.

How can I tell the first company I got hired without sounding like a liar? In my area I wouldn’t want to burn any bridges.

After watching a few videos from different channels and combining it all with my experience, I can say it's definitely a complex and definitely situational question.
On the surface, it's a dumb question too: most every candidate with a minimum of experience will be sending resumes and applying left and right. Recruiters know that, so when they ask the question, it's primarily to their own benefit, and I agree that asked earlier or later can serve entirely different purposes.
It's basically a question that introduces risk in the recruiter's equation: introduce risk too early and a recruiter may think they could be wasting their time. Which is very relevant to someone evaluating potentially dozens of candidates. Once the interest in the candidate goes beyond them, however, it becomes a different story, and the risk potentially morphs into urgency beneficial to the candidate.
Still, tricky, but I think it's important to recognize that mutability. Thanks for contributing your perspective and logic.
*PS:* The _what_ companies question is completely irrelevant and should be deflected or replied to with minimal detail.

I've applied to a job which has requirements fitting to my experience and shortly after submission, I've received an email from reruiting manager. So far every light seems green, however
company I applied to is in EU where my work permits and visa's will be a showstopper for my migration. In this scenario, if they ask this question above, should I say no and give them time to search for a candidate which has same qualities and has work permit in their region, or should I rush them a bit?
    Thanks and regards
btw, I'm shocked how much effect your videos make. Kudos to you💪

If you do answer no, wouldn't that also indicate that you are desperate because you have nobody else you are targeting?

@@laisamarques and see I think of the opposite. Basically if you are only applying for one job you are clinging on that one opportunity to work out, and if it doesn't you are screwed. And essentially you are letting them know that they are the ones who will make or break things with you.
Whereas, if you have several jobs you are applying to you have more options to choose from. And so letting them know that you have other potential suiters let's them know you have desirability from other companies.

@@polsenOO7 this is a good point, maybe instead of saying no, you expand and elaborate a little like what he is saying in the video. "None yet, I recently just started getting into the job search routine". But then again
I am not too sure, you have a valid point

    • @polsenOO7

@@scarfacen8459 the point I was making is that if you let an employer know they are the only ones viaing for your sole attention, that gives them more power here. And this can come in the form of not getting back to you sooner, or undercutting you as far as salary.
The way I see it, I believe you can say that you are applying for other jobs (and you should). Plus you don't want to say anything that you think they might like. People can sniff out the obvious and if someone can tell you are lying that is always a slippery slope that ends in disaster.

How would I answer "What type of role could you definitely not work in and why?". This question seems like a trap, every answer I think of isn't good!

Look at a job description and pick the opposite. For example, a sales job, probably being on your own in a cubicle would not be the best for you. Give an example as well, e.g. when I studied for exams, I did better when I was with friends rather than on my own.
It’s just to show that you know your strengths and that they are aligned with the job you are interviewing for.
With tricky questions, keep them short and redirect them to discussing the current position.

@@peachyspalace No worries. I have binge watched The Companies Expert's videos before my interview.
It helped script out answers but understanding his approach to interviews that definitely was the major advantage.

Hey again Bill, I just got a call from a company and been ask to attend a second interview, this time with the president, along with the management team. I applied for a supervisor position at a mid-size company. What should I expect from the president and what would be your advices ? Thanks again ! Luke.

Just show them respect and commitment, and you will bag it.

I was interviewed by a hiring manager on Monday this week. I kept in mind your ethos of giving maximum time on discussing the role and how well I am suited for it.
I was asked if I applied elsewhere and I ignored the question as it was asked together with 2 other questions.
