Hi, I found some mistakes in this video. The Press Gang's job was to pick up experienced sailors who were out of work, and in fact they were already enlisted, they just weren't working. Most pirates from the 1690s to 1730s (a time when buccaneers were no longer in office), the reason for being a pirate was like a thief or a motorcycle gang, an easy life. The pirate code depended on each ship, unlike the English government's sailors punished violent captains, in the case of pirates they had no universal law. Mainly in the golden age, when people like Bartholomew Roberts appeared, who ruled dictatorships. It's very difficult to say that pirates meant freedom, because one of the most profitable pirate activities was slave trade. And Anne and Mary have no actual record that they dressed as men.
this is a sound correction for the typical pirate era. though, i do have to say, the myth of pirates releasing slaves isn't a myth, but it is from the neo-golden age of piracy in the 1800s, when the ideas of abolition was gaining traction. it makes sense why the myth is so wide spread then, since many mistakes of fantastical essence of fictional pirates comes from the victorian era
The Golden Age of Pirates is so interesting. I've visited the grave of Black Bart (Barti Ddu) a few times as it's not far to drive to. It's weird to think that a big pirate came from the tiny village of Casnewydd Bach.
I agree that I don't think female pirates would be just running around hanging all out there, but the funny thing about boobs is that the mere presence of boobs didn't seem to draw much attention or clue your crewmates in to that you might be a woman? Like Hannah Snell who was stripped to the waist and received 500 lashes and apparently nobody noticed anything strange about this sailor???? From some of these accounts I feel like gender norms were so powerful in the past that merely wearing trousers and swearing is enough to pass as a man.
Interesting point! Man boobs might be a common occurrence on board a ship 🤔 no gym, no nutrition, and the sun sags more than just your face. I also venture to say that most pirates were sporting heavy cataracts from too much time in the sun.
Wow--this was so funny and EDUCATIONAL! Ok as a new subscriber, I have a lot of catching up to do (drats). Unlike doing a Netflix marathon, I feel like I need to pay attention here or else I'm a bad student. Love your quirky cleverness, i.e. exfoliation of the skin. LOL. Not sure which video I will watch next...maybe a shorter one since I haven't been in school in a long time and my attention span is sorta weak these days.
🥰 thank you! Don't worry, there won't be a pop quiz after each video🤣 but if you end up telling everyone you know about the exfoliating powers of keelhauling on a pirate ship then I know I've made a difference in the world!
The reason Mary and Anne are shown with plunging necklines is because they would open their shirts before killing a man to show him that he had been killed by a woman.
0:56 I love the idea of casual piracy as a side hustle, like when brick laying or tobacco harvesting season got slow, they might go engage in a bit of piracy. There might have been dilettante pirates who just kind of dabbled in it 😂

slay🤣
Cutthroat Island is such an underrated cheesy pirate adventure movie.
It's got a bad rep for bankrupting a studio, but it's such a fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously!

My greatgreat grandfather was a french pirate🤔
that's so cool
I have a hard time believing they wore pants, scarfs, jackets, boots, and other heavy hot clothes in the hot humid Caribbean!!🤨
Agreed, although don’t forget pirates weren’t only in the Caribbean
