2018 / 2019 Ford Mustang Ecoboost Review in 4K

  • Ford's Mustang has been the affordable RWD coupe to beat in America for a while, but in 2016 Chevrolet did just that with the new Camaro. That caused Ford to sharpen their pencil, and refresh the Mustang for 2018. Does that put this little pony back on top? Not quite, but it is the car I'd buy if I was shopping...
    2018 is the first year of the refresh but we already know what's happening for 2019 so this video includes those details in the comparison section. Nothing mechanical changes but Ford does re-shuffle a few options for the 2019 model year.

    Nobody ever notices the fact that the Mustang is one of very few cars that have air-conditioned seats. Not just ventilated, AIR-CONDITIONED. Most cars have ventilated seats - including expensive foreign cars - and there is no comparison to the Mustang's A/C seats. I drove a rental Mustang in Florida with this feature and it was incredibly comfortable. Anybody who lives in a hot climate ought to consider this.

      The air conditioned seats, radar adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, Android auto, manual transmission, and ability to run on 87 or 91 octane is why this is an awesome deal for me. Even now during the inflated prices due to the chip shortage, these mustangs are still in the low 20s!

    Glad someone not only chose to review the Ecoboost in immense depth but also the Automatic with it. Too many people are die-hard fascists about the 5.0 and a manual. I mean look at this comment section, they feel the need to still rail on literally anything thats not a BIG MURICAN V8 MANUAL here even though there are thousands of videos reviewing that combination.
    Because cars cant be enjoyed in other ways while being economical about it, clearly.

  • @drivecfl

    Everyone apparently knows what a Mustang is or should be..lol Look back at when the Mustang first appeared. Now you have several options. A 4cy turbo putting out 310 hp and 350 pnd ft of torque is amazing. That was a dream back in the day. If you want more grunt and have the money then get a G
    T. Funny thing is that the Ecoboost is still faster than 75% of the vehicles on the road. Not a bad everyday driver.

      minivans these days put about 260 hp and more..

    • @Sinoops
      @Sinoops 5 лет назад +19

      HP doesn't mean shit by itself. A truck can have 300 HP and still be slow as shit. Same with minivans. Power to weight ratio is what matters for performance cars and by that metric the mustang is better than the majority of vehicles including any minivans.

    • @USSC_VA
      @USSC_VA 5 лет назад +1

      On the technical side the Mustang EcoBoost isn't all that fast. Tops out at 125 MPH. It is quicker than most of the cars out there, agreed, but it's not faster than a Sonata/Optima. In my 2013 Sonata 1 was able to reach 135 MPH and it still had some more to go. But my EcoBoost, wouldn't go faster than 125 MPH even downhill. However, it looks so good that I will just customize the driveshaft and remove the limiter, then see what the top speed would be. In theory, without modifying the engine, and only with a new single piece driveshaft I should see 150 MPH... which is the exact limit of a Challenger R/T.

    • @KingZD1
      @KingZD1 5 лет назад +6

      β Δ the 125 is with the limiter on. I wouldn’t count any cars top speed based off of the speed with the stock limiter. Turn the limiter off then see your actually top speed.

      Great review indeed Alex. However I can't agree with you about the Camaro SS being a better option with the V8 engine. If the purchase is for a weekend car that will be tracked often then you might have a point. However if you plan to daily drive the car then the GT (or Bullitt :) ) is the much better choice in my opinion. And unfortunately for GM the newly disclosed 2019 Camaro refresh is missing the mark.

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 5 лет назад +1

      IMO its not if you are planning to keep your vehicle long term. I have magneride on my corvette, and when it comes time to replace it, as you do with all dampers, the cost is stratospheric. And you'd think, no problem, I'll pull it and just put normal shocks on that I can afford... nope, because the magneride has a ton of sensors. I would never ever buy a used car with magneride again, and I think that will tank resale value, because spending $5K on your suspension when the vehicle has depreciated to $15K is a hard sell.

    To answer Alex's question at the end, I would shop Mustang, 370Z, Challenger, and 86. I like the visibility and price options in these. The Camaro is automatically disqualified for me sadly because GM designed a car without windows and a tall gauge cluster. I simply can't see out (through pillars and roof line) of the camaro with my torso height

    Another great review Alex. On your continued assertions that the ZF 8 speed or this new 10 speed will "get you 0-60 faster every time." Since I don't spend my days on a track doing repeated 0-60 runs, I will happily trade a few tenths for the fun and engagement a proper manual transmission provides. Flappy paddles are no substitute.

    • @kitoyobeni1
      @kitoyobeni1 4 года назад

      To get the faster time, you don't use the paddles either. Let the computer do the shifting. With the new 10 speed auto, computer keeps the car in the power band through all the gears under heavy acceleration.
      That said, I understand those who prefer manual transmissions, it's a different style of truly connected driving. Unfortunately, they're dying off like car cd players.

Of course the Gt is better, it always will be, but for the money spent , (a good ten grand less than the Gt) it was still and is an incredible car. It Hit 60 in under 6 seconds, ran high 13s through the quarter, also passing the quarter mile mark at over 100 mph, it even had real duel exhaust and sounded great at full throttle. Its a shame, Ford finally got it right then they killed it.

    Even though it is dated in most ways, I think my 1986 Mustang GT 5.0 with the liftback (hatch) and back seat where adults could be comfortable is a more useful pony car. The new models back seat is a bad joke. Mustang designers could have maintained a decent back seat. It would be neat to drop the 2.3L Ecoboost in my 86, but at 80,000 miles my V8 is still like new.

      The big part of owning a "muscle car" / "pony car" is the sound and feel. I'm not so sure that the reason the 4 cylinder turbo is being used rather than the V6 is because it's such a superior engine. Try hanging a turbo on that V6 and you'll definitely threaten the pecking (marketing?) order that has the naturally aspirated V8 on top. After-market turbo kits for the V6 claim 444-750 wheel horsepower. I understand that one reason for the 4 cylinder turbo is because Ford is promoting the Mustang as a world car. In other countries, apparently they tax cars based on engine displacement. So, I guess Ford came up with the fairly hot and efficient 4.

    • @gamersacademyofmilitaryand4448

      Putting the turbo'd V6 from the new Raptor in the Mustang would be a helluva combo.
      I love what they did with the Ecoboost though. Its an entirely different car than the GT, appealing more to the performance touring market (BMW ) with techniques borrowed from Japan. Its an entirely different paradigm, but imho closer to the original Pony Car concept than the current V8 models. Thats why to me it gets so much hate, its just a completely different vehicle

    Ford finally realized that the Mustang Pony is way more important on the front grill than the Blue Oval such as on the Fox Body Mustangs.

    This 2018 ecoboost mustang costs 42k and I paid around 35k for my nearly fully loaded 2017 mustang GT new last July. The price increase on the 18s is unfortunate.

      Josh_S550 agreed saw a guy on other channel buy a 18 GT for 51k. Just rediculous. So many other options at that price point.

      Realistically, a 2018 Ecoboost with these performance metrics will cost about 25k. The 42 is just cosmetic and luxury addons.

    Time will tell, but I think Ford made a major mistake in eliminating the V-6 in their Mustang. I just bought a new leftover 2017 with one. I'm loving it. Babying it, I get 21mpg around town. And to put things in perspective, it has the same hp as a Mopar 383 2barrel from back in the day when Mopar ruled.

      3.7 was a nice engine, durable and reliable and without the complexity of turbocharging. But instead of Ford refining it and bumping compression, adding DGI, they decided boosted i-4.
      The 2.7 EB would have been nice, but that's encroaching on the 5.0 too much.

    While the Camaro performance figures are impressive, that’s less than one percent of the time that I would use them. I think one of the reasons that the Mustang has been so successful is that Ford recognizes the every day driver. I’ve considered Camaros several times but I’ve always ended up in Mustangs because it’s just a better car on a daily basis. The Camaros have felt a little claustrophobic and the visibility out is awful. I’ve always chosen to give up some performance differences for a car that’s more enjoyable to drive.

    Dang that is a lot of buttons on the steering wheel, must say Mustang is a sexy looking car I was looking at one for myself alas Canadian winter's a little too hardcore for it to be a DD.
    Edit: I'd also personally include the 370z in this comparison but as Nissan has seen to let it wilt away on the vine I can understand not including it.

    I don’t know about the reliability of the 4 banger because the boost would have to be pretty high to make 300 hp with it. And it’s never good to cram all that boost in that little engine from a long living engine standpoint

      Zips 10 this mentality is so tired. I daily drive a speed3 that’s making more power than a stock EcoBoost mustang and has almost 200k miles on it and have had no problems at all. If you maintain and tune correctly turbo 4 cylinders are perfectly reliable.

    Tough to pick a winner; Camaro or Mustang. But at 40+K, you've got a lot of cross shopping options. For that kind of coin, I'd be looking at both the Focus RS and the MUCH FORGOTTEN Fusion Sport. I'd be considering a WRX, a Nissan 370z, some kind of Lexus F car, not to mention the slew of German crap to cross shop. Just this week, out of curiosity I priced used Alfa Julias. You can get a used one for low 30s. All that said, I'd have a 392 Challenger.

    Hey Alex, have you considered doing a mini review or guide for people who want to tow a small trailer with a car? The owner's manuals for cars in the US have either fairly low weight ratings or they recommend against it altogether. However, in England and other places they seem to tow campers etc with all sorts of cars. Just a thought, thanks! =)

    I test drove the 4 cyl turbo and liked it, but can't justify buying the car when the inside has fake vroom vroom but outside people here a 4 cyl whiny engine going by.. gotta have a real engine/muffler roar.. just can't do it.. now leaning towards the 6 cyl camero. sounds like a normal car on outside

    • @jake51515

      That's cause you're too wrapped in trying to impress other people with your car. As someone who owns a 16 EcoBoost, I have MANY ppl approach me and tell me how beautiful the car is. If you like the noise, sweet, I do too. But in my eyes I cant justify an additional 5 grand for the GT just on the sound alone when the ecoboost suits every need very fun. Not to mention with a larger turbo, people are getting over 500whp out of the car. Stupid fast. If you like the noise why not get a v6 mustang? They only recently stopped making them, and they sound pretty damn good, especially with a roush exhaust.

    • @opaextreme9282
      @opaextreme9282 5 лет назад

      @@jake51515 I went in with the intentions to look and drive a 6 cyl. to compare to the 6 cyl camaro, but found out it's not available anymore. It's not really what others will think, but I am considering these cars cause of the cool factor of a muscle car and even if it's faster than a GT, I just don't want a 4 cyl.. turbo tuner sounding car. I've given more consideration and am leaning towards ponying up the extra $ for the GT. It's awesome anyways. I like the camaro better for exterior looks, but it doesn't have the safety reactive features like the mustang (I want it for the wife, when she drives it), and stang has better outward visibility.
