  • This ebay antenna cost just 99p. Lets see if it makes any difference in range tests with a Boafeng 888s 446 Mhz radio.

Very interesting results with the antenna test. It makes sense that a longer antenna "should" produce better RX and TX. Thanks for sharing. I look forward now to the additional antenna testing. Good luck with it.

I tend to setup a lot of transceivers for businesses and amateur operators. Usually, the radios are shipped straight to my home. I got three Baofeng FP-F8HP hand held transceivers and set them up and also ordered Nagoya 771 antennas. But they turned out being counterfeits, which I noticed immediately. But I put them on their transceivers and sent them on their way. Every single one of the fakes broke the capacitor inside the antenna and lost the dual band ability in three months time. I then ordered different Nagoya antennas from a different vendor and got the real ones. As far as I know, the three Baofengs are still working with the real antennas.

Thanks Fred! Just bought 2 pieces Baofeng 888s for only 15 euros (~ 12 pounds) including chargers, straps etc. Only thing missing was programming cable so I had to order that separately. I was surprised to see the cheapest Puxing 777 (VHF) for more than 30 euros and I bought mine in 2012 for only 14 euros. Some brands become cheaper and others more expensive, very strange. Like your videos, carry on!

Really enjoy all your videos. I have a Baofeng UV3 and that 771 knock-off antenna:)
The UV3 has all the same deep menus of baffling features as a UV5... but has the 2 Watt output of a 888 walkie.
I have tested the 771 against the short original antenna on the UV3. This is where it gets complicated...
BIG difference on VHF 144MHz, not a big difference on UHF 440MHz. Seems to be the case that VHF really needs longish antennas, and UHF (because of its much higher frequency) will do very well on 6 inch antennas.
If you look at the little T1 you tested, the little built-in antenna is simply too short even for UHF. That said, Baofeng has obviously optimised the length of the little coiled wire in its stumpy bump of an antenna, because it does actually manage amazingly well, doesn't it?
On your walk to the flyover, the T1 got surprisingly close to the 888... except it suffered dropouts when you were in some low points. So it CAN do some decent range, but is more of a fair weather sailor if you encounter some terrain along the way:)
In an ideal world it would have 7 inches. (And in that ideal world I would be 7 inches too;)!!
There is a modest upgrade that I found delivers a bit of audio quality and a few hundred yards of range on BOTH VHF and UHF, and it's using either a Nagoya 701 or the slightly longer 666 (I buy knockoffs as well:)
The NA-701 is about 7 inches and the NA-666 is around 8 inches, and they only cost a few dollars for the "SMA Female" versions for these popular 888 and UV5R walkies.
Your videos provide important real-world comparisons, and can even settle some arguments.
There is another fellow on RUclips who hacks his BF-T1 antenna with a longer length of floppy wire that dangles out of a hole he drilled in the top of the antenna bump on the case. Fair enough - but he either got a dud unit or he is prone to exaggerating outrageously, because he says that a T1 will only work over a hundred yards or so. You have proved that is bunk! You got close to a half mile... and now we have your range test on RUclips forever to settle the matter.
    Cheers
    Ross vk1fcbx Australia.

I have the next model up the baofeng bf-999s and the range on high power and on the wide band is really good even with trees in the way as that can affect the range. I was using the stock rubber ducky antenna and the range is bril. My next test will be on low power and narrow band to see if it makes a diffrence and come back eith an update, as i have pre programmed channels 1-4 to be on low power and narrow band.

For me RT22 is better radio than BF888s. The same range. Better for the pocket and the antenna can not be broken. The only plus in the BF888s is what can be placed an external antenna. It should be a base radio, cheap radio for a house or a car. Because there is also a battery eliminator for him. But as a practical handheld, the RT22 and WLN KD-C1 are better.

I heard them all pretty good but the Holme Moss (elevated location) was exceptional. That standard aerial, especially with a 16cm counterpoise attached is far better than most users appreciate.

Hard to tell. The moulding on the case work is poor on the copies. Most 888 will be gen at around £12-18. The Plus models have poor moldings.

I bought a fake NA-771 equivalent to $1 and it turns out to be worse than the stock antenna on the UV-5R lol
More noise on FM Radio, struggle to receive signals from the VHF while the stock antenna works no problem on the exact same frequency, and also more noise in the UHF frequency.

    • @CB-RADIO-UK

Yes some people have said the same thing. Ive tested mine (Ive got 4) and they seem ok but these antennas are really cheap now so quality will suffer.
