makes me feel better with my fake nagoya thanks for the info!
Haha, thanks for watching 👍
Me too lol
Received a so-called Nagoya 771 the other day which I ordered from Amazon. Package was a clear wrap with only a sticker identifying it as Nagoya. Antenna tip was mangled and part of the antenna above the base was a little melted. Scan code was smudged. Immediately sent it back. Thank goodness for the Amazon return policy. Cannot say I am disappointed in the Nagoya 771, because this may have been a fake. Could not accurately check out the SWR, but I was not going to keep it anyway. Appreciate your efforts to spread the word about fake name brand antennas. Thanks for sharing.
It's easy to get a fake on! Good luck on any future purchases.
Just now ordered the 771 via your link. Thanks for your help navigating through the counterfeit madness.
Awesome man, good luck with the antenna 👍
The "tire" sound make my heart stop!!!! 73's from Argentina
Lol, sorry about that 👍
Same thing here! lol
Same here... hahaha, 73 buddy
I was in work with headphones and almost start running for my life LOL
My neighbor is throwing a party and I thought when I heard this, one of her guest were speeding off. LOL.
Ordered 4 of these from china and they cost around $9 in total. I was a bit conserned at first but if they end up being fake and perform better than these original Baofeng UV-5R antennae what I have now, it's a win in my books. After watching this it might be that they actually might get proper signal afterall. Great video, really helped to set my mind at ease after watching this. I might buy one locally from a radio-store ($25) here in Finland and do some testing on me own to see if there is any other difference than the high price.
Glad they work for you, HT antennas can be hit or miss regardless of where the come from. Thanks for watching Toko!
So how did the Chinese antennas work out for you, and how did they compare to a "real" locally purchased Nagoya?
73,
John/KK7JBZ
got the orange one, it work great compared to short one, got better reception on fm band
Thanks for sharing the info 👍
Thanks for checking it out 👍
Hi again, I have tested my fake now which I purchased for £5. It has SWR of 1.2-1 on VHF 1.6-1 on UHF. Same SWR as stock antenna on CRTFP00 better performance.
Antennas antennas antennas. I bought a car one time that was only worth $500 and I stuck to antennas up there and I sold it a week later for $750 LOL. Great video keep up the good work ..and just remember an antenna on the ground is a sad antenna
Glad you liked it 👍
Got 5. Fake or not the receiver jumped up with higher performance. And mostly the fm radio and 440 is just fine. Tks Fer fine film. And education
👍
Awesome info. I've had uv5r for years but don't know how to use it. But I do enjoy watching other use it and the info you put out.
Glad you like the videos 👍
Best comment Of the year, maybe century...
All these Bags was my old mans joke
It's too bad there are no videos here or elsewhere on the web on how to "use" a UV5R...
@@truck57us I've seen them all. Just dont get the concept of repeaters and what all the functions are and when to use them.
I ordered several "Nagoya" antennas last year. Two were definite counterfeits (the genuine ones are never orange) but oddly enough, one of the genuine counterfeits performed best overall on the antenna tester. On both bands. Whether it will hold up over time is something else, since many "rubberized" antennas crumble in 5-10 years. Even OEM ones.
It’s weird but some times the fakes are great and the legit ones are terrible. Thanks for the comment 👍
@@TheSmokinApeWelcome to the world of Chinese quality control standards 😆
I got 8 fake on the way and should be here this week, I was not concerned, Thanks ! 55
Good luck with them 👍 thanks for watching!
excellent content my friend keep up the good content :))
good rundown - I was digging out some of antennas the other day in the basement. Also good use of the intro to set the stage! 73's! VA1CYR
Thanks Jim, I appreciate the feedback 👍
Making a good working antenna wouldn't be difficult, and I don't imagine the TIDRadio TD-771 would be a poor performer. This is a new hobby for me, but I've yet to come across a radio exchange. Amazing.
New hobbies are always a bit tough to break into, so after screwing in my new antenna and hitting scan, I haven't found any broadcasts, but I'll keep trying.
Strangely, many hamsters are getting great results from Abbree antennas. They're cheap and they're efficient. Plus, you can put one in your trunk and if you get in trouble somewhere where you can't cell phone coverage, you can unfold it and try to raise emergency rescue teams.
You also can schedule contacts with family and friends in the wilderness. Just unfold the antennas, screw them in and you can stay in touch.
It's amazing the technology to versatility ratio, and Baofeng is a Godsend to people who want to get into a new hobby. 🔹🌞🌛✨
Super Test - THX ! :)
👍
The “Expert Power” was a knock off of the Nagoya NA-701. It had the knurling on the bottom. It did not advertise itself as a Nagoya either. It had phenomenal 70cm performance. On par with the 18” Diamond SRH77 series.
Thanks for the info Pete 👍
I have a few from Btech. I tested them on the RigExpert AA_600 analyzer, and they were 5:1 and higher. The stock baofeng antennas had a much better SWR, so I'm a little disappointed with Nagoya.
Yeah, 5:1 is no good.
Good job sir.
Thanks 👍
There older Nagoya Antennas 144/430 MHZ instead of UHF/MHF. They had a slight design flaw leaving a gap between some of the radios or they failed to connect they tried useing a washer to fix that problem. The Blue Print is hard to read on black and it tends to fade away over the course of age you don't want to use the wrong Antenna it can short out the radio . So they switched to Silver Print makeing it easier to read. So there's no mistake in identifying the old Antennas from the new the new ones have Green packageing instead of Orange. Nobody is going to waste there time copying a $15 Antenna.
Great video. I have an assortment of questionable and what I believe to be legit Nagoyas also. They all seem to work pretty well.
Yeah, just test them and make sure they work. Stay safe brother 👍
Thanks for sharing , 73 from VR2
Thanks for watching 👍
I was going to send back 2 fake NA-771 orange bag antennas tomorrow, but after seeing this video , I think I'll keep them. The price was too good to be true anyway and they seem to work just fine.
Yeah, I’m not advocating everyone run out and get them. But just because they are fakes doesn’t mean all are bad. Thanks for the comment and good luck with them 👍
Always test antenna characteristics with the DUT lying flat across your bench
great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
My solution was to buy Diamond brand. LOL!!! I jest. An excellent comparison Sir. 73
Haha, I have a Diamond RH3 that is a fantastic antenna. Thanks for the comment 👍
I don't quite understand this "performance" test...wouldn't an over the air test have been better? Or maybe a measurement of radiated power? I think a low SWR doesn't necessarily mean it is a good antenna. A dummy load would likely show 1:1, but that wouldn't make it a good antenna...just saying.
A dummy load isn’t efficient or necessary resonate. I appreciate the feedback back, this test wasn’t about radiated power but reflected power. Thanks for watching 👍
his swr test is most important. some of us use radios other than 20 buck uv5r and value our finals. i always check antennas on nanovna tester and spending 20 bucks on a vna is cheaper than 100 bucks on a major repair on a 600 buck handie
dh-771 antenna (red) shorten 17 cm for 446 mhz pmr
If you wear headphones you can hear that the 440 is adding noise into the mic and making it pop while the 2m didn't have any audible clicking/hum in your camera's mic. RFI on 70cm!
Ooof!
Hi friend .
Hey , is it ok to use the 771 ant.
to transmit on 220 and also up to 520
Thanks .
Love your channel
C.f.
The 771 is designed to work on 2m and 70cm 👍
I've watched all the vids you've made on the Btech DMR 6x2 at least 20x each, I've followed your programming steps. I can't get my Btech to receive anything. Is there something particular you need to do to a new radio?
Can you RX analog signals?
Have you had any experience with the Radioddity RD-371? Are they on par with the ones tested here?
I’m sorry, I haven’t had any experience with that antenna 👍
Does a Nagoya tri-band antenna work well on a dual-band radio? And which is a better antenna, the NA-771 or the NA-24J, transmitting and receiving being the only criteria for judging? Doesn't seem like there are no solid answers. I like the 24J better, but I'm uncertain which is the top of the hill.
I'd only use the dual band ones on dual band radios.
Genuine ones are somewhat of a rarity, even more so for Diamond. I've got a real 701, and 771. I will only buy them if I can be certain they are genuine.

This is the problem with many many Chinese made products. As soon as one company lands on something popular there will be multiple other factories pumping out and selling clones. Sometimes they're just as good, sometimes they're worse, hell sometimes they're even better but it's gamble. Sadly when you order online it can be difficult or even impossible to guarantee that you get an authentic item.
Yep, it's crazy the way that happens. Thanks for the comment!
AS a German I can understand your Englisch better than most others. Thanks for this Video 👍
Glad to hear that!
Probably because he talks slower
Great comparison, I just ordered a 701… looks like a fake. Good to know they’re so similar. I almost canceled my order when I figured out it was fake lol
Thanks for checking out the video Josh. Good luck with the antenna.
Very good info. I bought a 701 before I learned there were fakes out there. Hope mine comes in as real. I also hope that the dog that got hit survived 😁
Good luck with it, thanks for checking out the video Creaky 👍
Thank you, I have the legit ones, thank you again for your creating these videos
You're very welcome, thanks for watching the Edgardo!
I acquired a pair of Baofang BF-BF8+ second gen UV-5R radios and I'm just now starting to get into this whole HAM stuff. I think I've got more questions than answers lol. I ordered a set of fake Nagoya 15.1" antennas to try out. I had an old Emergency CB radio laying around and I thought I'd get into that. What I have learned is CB is DEAD. I could not get a single soul on any of the 40 channels. Transmit or receive! So naturally this HAM stuff is the next best thing.
CB seems to vary greatly with region. Glad to hear your getting into Ham Radio.
I just ordered a fake antenna, didn't know it was fake.... Anyway, good video!
It still might work, good luck and thanks for watching.
@@TheSmokinApe I’m hoping it works! You have a new subscriber :)
Awesome, thanks man!
So apparently one tell tale sign of the antenna being fake is that it has a rubber tip and not a plastic moulded tip with the nagoya branding embossed in it. Also they should have a QR code and mine is missing that too. These fakes are getting much better quality but its hard to find a seller you can trust.
Got my fake Nagoya Antenna for my Baofeng UV82. Got them for only Php 99 ($2) for 2. And this video made me more confident with its quality. 142 for the review.
Thanks for watching 👍
Lazada or shoppee?????
It's 12:25am at night and I have headphones on while super tired. The noise at 5:38 made me jump so much holy hell!
Did you ever scan those Q code stickers? Might be interesting to see what kind of info is there.
I just scanned the fakes and the real ones, they all go to Nagoya’s website 👍
Never scan a questionable QR code, they can go to malware sites. Who knew?
@@lyfandeth yep, it can happen. Just make sure you know the originator.
So I have 200 acres of bush and need to set up my uv-5r in the house sometimes as a base station . Could a portable J pole antenna be run up to the second floor to increase range through a mile of bush ?? Thoughts.Or can I do the same with a ABBREE...get it up on the second floor.
Id do a jpole on the second floor and you should be good 👍
Thanks for the help! But I still don't know of I have to use that rubber adapter in my uv-5r. Anyone?
I've never used it 👍
@@TheSmokinApe so they are basically aestherical?
Quick question. I am new and just learning the ham radio. I just got in my baofeng bf-f8hp and also got the genuine Nagoya NA-771. I don’t have my license so I am not transmitting. When listening to the NOAA channels around me I can pick up 3 of them with the stock antenna but can’t pick up any with the Nagoya! Is this normal? I can listen to the FM radio broadcast with the Nagoya so it seems to be working.
Yeah it can be "normal" the Nagoya isn't resonate on the NOAA frequencies but you should be able to pick up something, just not as weell as the Ham Bands. 👍
@@TheSmokinApe thank you very much for the quick reply. Much appreciated!
I was looking for someone to explain the difference between ar-771 and na-771.
They appear to be the same design to me
Ive got the uv5r and am able to tx rx 32 miles. There's nothing wrong with the stock antenna. Would've been interesting to see the stock rubber duckie tested here.
I agree that that stock antenna work pretty well, often adding a higher gain antenna can create RX issues by overloading the radio 👍
How in the heck are you getting 32 miles?
@@TheSmokinApe how 8n the world could he be reaching 32 miles?
32 miles is easily achievable on VHF/UHF with line of sight.
anyone worth their weight in counterfeiting can easily round corners or make the changes to appear real. Their all made in China and probably from the same factory.
Totally agree, thanks for watching!
Where can I buy a legit one?
should i install the spacer or no, is it gonna impact the performance?
(the ring adaptor thing)
It won't impact performance, if you have a gap use it and if not don't. Thanks for checking out the video!
I just got a uv-5r, my first radio... and the baofeng cord i got (from amazon) to program it doesnt recognize the radio, but the sound goes off (mic connection seems to work)... any ideas on how i can get it to connect to my pc?
Can you see the cable in device manager?
is the nagoya na-771 fully fits the uv-5r?
the advert in the na-771 is usually 144/430MHz, while the stock rubber antenna is 136-174/400-520MHz rated, and if you program the uv-5r it can reach up to 1000MHz right.
so is the na-771 capable of that frequency?
im new to this hobby btw
Welcome to the hobby Axelle. The Baofengs won’t go to 1000MHz they usually stop at 570MHz, also keep in mind they are only legal to use in the US by licensed amateurs on the amateur bands. No antenna will reliably cover all the frequencies so most folks do upgrade to something like a Nagoya and they generally report better performance on amateur frequencies 👍
@@TheSmokinApe thanks for the info, but now i'm curious to why did you say baofengs won't go 1000MHz and usually stops at 570MHz?
I haven’t seen one that does 1000MHz
@@TheSmokinApe more power to you man great vids, btw ever heard of the RH901S antenna? are they good for uv-5r?
@@axelleigarta5152 sure, but I’m not sure it’s worth spending the case
I've gotten the green bags and the right part number but mine are labeled Abbree for a brand name.
Maybe they are legit Abree?
Have you tried testing with a nano vna
Not these antennas, I might do a video like that 👍
What brand of SWR meter do you use/recommend?
For an inline SWR meter I would typically suggest MFJ.
You skipped the measurements. My 771 is the same as your No.1 -- blue lettering, no QR code on the back and in the most extreme longest measurement its 15.1 inches. But the so-called real one is 15.6 inches but I dont know how 15.6 or any correct measurement is achieved. Do i measure the antenna proper without considering the base or rubber tip, or the whole thing, tip to end of the mounting screw?
I have a BFTECH NA-772R SWR 3.8 on 2m SWR 1.15 on 70cm
That’s terrible for 2m
@@TheSmokinApe I replaced with the ABBREE 18.8 SWR 1.28 home made twin coat hanger SWR 1.12
Nice 👍
Hello Hoping to get your feedback, I purchased several Nagoya NA771G which have the BNC connector. The package is not the same and the antenna has a sticker at bottom of it with the logo, however, the retailer is a Nagoya authorized dealer per Nagoya's website, any thoughts?
If they work well I wouldn’t worry too much about it. That said if it’s not the official packaging I would suspect they are fake.
@@TheSmokinApe Thanks. I actually just heard back from Nagoya (Reuex) and apparently the antennas are legit as packing has changed for this particulur model, na771G and only one supplier in US sells it. But amazed they actually answered me
How about testing these antennas for reception? I've found my stock rubber ducky MUCH better for picking up transmissions. A few nights ago there was a local net going on and I switched multiple times from a Nagoya 771 to the rubber ducky. The Nagoya BARELY picked up anything while the ducky did just fine. I have 2 other long antennas, a Bingfu and an obvious Nagoya knock-off and all of the performed the same, in other words, terribly.
One of this things I have noticed is that some radios, not sure what you are using, can actually become overloaded with better antennas.
@@TheSmokinApe Hi Ape, I'm talking about on the UV-5R. What I've noticed is that it doesn't even break the squelch even when set to the lowest setting. If it was overloading wouldn't the radio at least recognize that a signal was coming in? I have better radios that I've never felt the need to upgrade the antenna but I will try swapping these Nagoyas onto my KG-UV9P tonight during a net to see if they also suck on that radio. Never even thought about doing that. lol Thanks!
@@brazoon1Did you ever further your testing?
@@digitalchaos1980 not really but I did discover that these antennas seem to work much better on UHF compared to VHF. Possibly/probably better than the rubber ducky antenna even
@@brazoon1 Ok cool, well thanks for letting me know! 😎

Thanks for checking in 👍
I could throw a 50-ohm resistor in the base of an antenna with some random element for the whip and it would show a near-perfect 1:1 SWR. Does that make it's "performance" as an antenna is excellent? It'll take an antenna that has good ears and optimized radiation pattern with a somewhat elevated SWR over a deaf/dumb low-SWR dummy-load any day.
You sure could, but having a good SWR doesn't preclude you from having an optimized radiation pattern. Thanks for the comment 👍
Good video Ape... I think part of the concern from folks is consistency. With genuine Nagoya, I think you pretty much always get the same quality of antenna. With the wannabe Nagoyas, it depends on what part of a certain communist nation that shall not be named the antenna came from, and what factory, and what the person running the machine had for breakfast that day. :)
Totally agree GG, I’d always recommend getting a legit Nagoya or a Comet / Diamond if you have the cash 👍

It's around here somewhere...
Why reacent tests on youtube show swr 5.21 on 2m band and 13.53 on 70cm band with fake Na-771 (tested with Surecom SW-33Plus) ? Can someone please please help me understand this? I got 2 fake Na771 but worry to install to some of my Uv5r.
Even the stock Baofeng antennas aren’t that good.
@@TheSmokinApe thank you so much for your conclusion. I have seen the test on stock anthena as well. People believe that handheld radios are designed to stand high swr. Also each testing device gives different swr too. So I now feeling relief. Overthinking makes mind-blowing. Its like all doctors always see germs everywhere they looking at 😂
if the fake antenna is not broken, it works like the original

I don't think these are fakes. I think they're just cheap Chinese regardless. Certainly, the $2 eBay NA-771 antenna has allowed me to hit a repeater from 25 miles with my 4 watt radio.
I don't think they are fakes either, well not all of them! Thanks for watching Phil.
With what walkie talkie? with the uv5R?
Just bought a 320A for my baofeng that cant hit a 222 repeater that the stock antenna can hit, hmm
Oh boy, you think it's a fake?
@@TheSmokinApe I'm not sure, your video showed that, at least when it comes to SWR, a fake doesn't have to be bad. I'm kind of wanting to try the version from Diamond or Comet, I'm reading those reviews now. One problem I had with the Nagoya was screwing it onto the Baofengs sma connection, i could get a few turns but then it met resistance and was a bear to get off once I had it screwed on. Not sure if thats normal or not. It did it on my other Baofeng too. I might try a barrel connector to extent the Nagoya base up a bit but I don't think that was the cause of my performance issues. Cheers and thanks for the reply
Got one of the "real" ones from btech. It's absolute garbage and they make it cost just as much to return it as the purchase price. The rubber stock antennas preform much better
Where to buy original Nagoya antenna
randl.com is a great place.
I have a Viavi TRI-LKG-ANT-DUAL-DUCK Rubber Duck Antenna for Seeker HL , (who would buy it?)
Not sure I've heard of that antenna.
Good information for comparisons but I doubt your SWR readings are valid. The radio and the user make up the ground plane of a handheld so to accurately measure SWR you shouldn't remove the antenna from the handheld and the user needs to key the radio in a normal way. I have no idea how you would do the latter. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, with HTs you are part of the ground.
Retevis 771 is much better than Nagoya 771 (no fake)
How do the fakes compare to the stock antenna?
In many cases they are better.
@@TheSmokinApe Thank you I just bought 4 of them for $10 before I saw this. I'm glad to know I probably will get an improvement.
Some youtube radio guys say to just throw the stock Baofeng rubber ducky antenna into the trash!
I bought a "real" 771 and when doing a channel scan it preformed worse than the original antenna that came with my Baofeng BF F8HP.
Any idea why?
I think I'm going to send it back and get one of those folding tactical antenna like you reviewed.
What I will say is that the Baofeng radios have a lower quality Direct Conversion receiver, often called a "front end." Upgrading the antenna will cause the radio to "hear" better than it did with the stock antenna. With a Baofeng that can cause intermodulation or overload the front end causing degraded performance. Does that help?
@@TheSmokinApe I still plan on trying out a 28 inch "Tactical" folding antenna..
I bought this Baofeng for emergency use on my Versys 300 adventure bike...

honestly on my baofengs or my yaesus 70D hts, i use nagoyas and i have a more exspensive diamond SRH77CA , and they all seem to perform almost exactly the same, I would not be surprised if ALL of them were made in china, IMO , dont waste your money on diamond or comet... just my opinion... what do I know. Hey Hammer, plenty of folks say that. Use what you got 👍
I got a fake Nagoya and it didn’t even work at all. I think you’re lucky that the fakes you got work.
so im using fake bluelabel nagoya for a couple of years
Glad it’s working out for you 👍
I THINK mine might be fakes....I did the same test, same SWR meter, but using a UV82L radio. I have 4 x Nagoya 771 antenna's and the 4 stock ones that came with my 4 HT radio's.I tested them all, the stock antenna's all had over 3:1 SWR on both 144/70cm, the "Nagoya's" all had really high SWR (5+:1) aswell on the RS40. I switched to another meter that is digital, and all 4 of the Nagoya wannabe's had SWR of 19.9 or above. I refuse to believe the meter's are wrong, as they work perfectly on known GOOD antenna's. I just can believe I managed to buy 4 duds that are SO bad they should be taken to the edge of the world and tossed into oblivion. I know they work still, but I wonder how much range is being lost due to crap antenna's on low power radio's....I hate to think how high the SWR would be on my super tactical, none more tactical, camo painted 4 foot long folding tape measure antenna (with factory added 10 inch bendable metal riser on the bottom, so the SMA connector has enough weight on it for a rock solid connection)......talk about an idiotic thing to own.....
dont get it ? if the name is the same why is it a fake?
That call them fakes when they are made by someone who copied the design, I think 🤔

Correct sir!
Semi reassuring video!! My radio use is exclusively the Australasian UHF CB band (476-7Mhz - above most antenna's recommended specs) & biggest concern is the %reduction in output + possible damage via a higher SWR.
In one of his videos, Notarubicon (GMRS user) was talking about one SWR tester coming with a metal plate for hand held antennas - ruclips.net/video/LMlmyuiOZxk/видео.html, just wondering what your thoughts are?
Hey Robert, Thanks for watching the video. I haven't seen that video and don't own that tester BUT I have a buddy that does... Here is my take, most of these test are in controlled settings. An inline small SWR meter that is usable in real conditions is the best way to get an idea of whats going on...
