When i was 19 i bought a 2006 ford fiesta zetec s 1.6 diesel. The zetec S trim has the same bumpers as the ST and similar sporty suspension and short shifter. I wanted something which looked sporty but had similar cheap running costs as my first car.

Hi JB, even though I'm 50 I watched your video to see what you youngsters face nowadays with insurance. Omg what a bloody nightmare, anyway to the point, location makes a hell of a difference, I live in a town in County Durham and quotes here are excellent and yet if I put towns all around me the insurance nearly doubles!! Now I did a little experiment on location like you and found I'm living in one of the cheapest in the country......I'm staying here!! You've made a good informative video there and probably saved a lot of 17 year olds a lot of money.
Appreciate it Graeme! That's insane - you're definitely in luck if you're living in such a good area for quotes - living on the edge of London I don't have quite as much luck 😢
@@CarsWithJB I just did a little experiment, Toyota Aygo 1.0, 12k miles a year, bells and whistles fully comp insurance, here £325 +£100 excess, then did a Harringay address and with the same company, same insurance, it was £1221+£100 excess!! Up here I can insure a 5.0 BMW M5 for a grand! The insurance in London is nuts and you have my sympathy....i think I'd rather walk. You've really opened my eyes with your video, thanks for that.
7 minutes into the video as an 18 year old new driver i managed to get my insurance quote of £2600 no black box down to £2300 thank you so much and long live hastings essential!
In some places, you will find that stating your car is parked in a garage will actually increase your amount, which is the opposite of what I was always told. My buddy questioned a suit that works for a car insurance company about this and the suit said this was because a garage can obscure views for potential witnesses of the theft and also muffle noises like smashing glass and alarms which reduces the chance of anyone even noticing. Identifying a thief can go a long way to recovering the car and a garage can hinder this.
6 years ago my first year I paid £2500 on a 1.2 Corsa SXI which I paid £500 for and only lasted about 6 months 🤣 then got a 1.4 MK5 golf which I kept for 5 years, that was cheap on insurance and a cheap runner.. I’d recommend!

Great video JB, Insurance in Leicester for a polo 9n 1.2l is £581.28 including my parents, there is also an excess of £250 which brings the total to £630.46 for insurance which is from a company called GOGirl Insurance, this quote was done as a 17yr old as a student
I've been driving a little while now but this video popped back up and i thought I'd let people know that using these tips I'm now driving a 1.6 astra sport with no black box for just over 100 pound a month, took alot of tinkering but couldn't believe my luck in the end. Great advice cheers bud!!!!
Like i said the last vid mate, you can really see the ammount of time and effort you put into these videos. You're going to have a massive following soon enough. Mark my words.
I'm 16 rn, so I'm still waiting to get my licence and stuff but I'm still looking at cars and getting insurance quotes and stuff. (I really want an up). Before this video I was getting quotes at like 1600 quid and 1800 quid (but I'm looking to pay monthly instead of annual). But after this video I did another quote and found that the price monthly had gone down to about 1400 quid, so thank u man!
Just a quick one I saw this vid which said do it annually as it saves, but if you can't afford to do it annually get a 0% credit card and pay it back monthly. That's what my mate did and it was fine👍
Glad it helped - best of luck with driving tests and getting a car/insurance etc! And as above, the 0% credit card trick is a good one of you can get it 🤙🏽
The problem is living in london drives it up, watford is quite a rich area so it has lower crime rates etc, slightly over the border of london it gets up to 5k average, mine was 3k and the lowest I could get was 2.4k, Also make sure you log in to your account on incognito mode, it gets cheaper and messing around with parameters doesnt increase it
Hi! I'm a young EU country citizen, just moved to the UK (last year's June) and started searching for cars and insurances in the beginning of this year to make my journey to my workplace easier. I've gotten a lot of stupidly high insurances, but in the end I found the Suzuki swift (1.3 petrol, from 2004 to 2010,3door and 5 door did not make a difference for me). I live in Doncaster (South Yorkshire),in a nor bad,nor good area,I'm 21 years old with no named driver experience. So I think this pretty much will end in a price of a 17 years old British person's quote. My insurance was £1400 without blackbox. This car wasn't mentioned in any cheap car insurance videos I found on Yt,so I thought my comment would help someone who's probably in my shoes.
I’ve got a 14 plate Ford Focus Zetec s and I’m still on my first year of insurance, it’s actually a really good deal because insurance in quite a rough area for me was only about £230 a month
If it was anything like me the second year should be about half as much as the first one if you make no claims, also you've not done too bad on the price considering it's a "sports" model :D
@@teiganmcallow8665 yeah I heard around Liverpool it's not as good. I honestly don't get it. I know it's because of some risks but they can't just put insurance up because of a few degenerates having accidents or stealing cars
From Leeds and WITH a black box it went from £1562 to £865!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and without a black box, £3-4k to £1055!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
I got a quote 2.2k for my polo 9n I live near Watford, did my age 20, sales advisor and wheels as a mod car value 500 so not bad for me I guess without a box
Traditionally for a first car I would say “polo’s are good”. However I would have to say the Audi a2 is my personal recommendation. It’s very cheap to run High quality Amazing fun to drive Unbelievably practical mainly down to the rear seats being removed by just one little button! Disclaimer: only if you can get over the looks of the car :)
I would advise people to use these principles, get a quote, call up the insurance company and tell them you have found a cheaper quote elsewhere (-300 of the quote you got) and ask them to match it.
Yo bro Just wanna say you're madly appreciated man. Legit your videos are life savers If you can, is it possible to make a video on the cheapest brand new cars to insure? I wanna get a car on lease or finance and pay the insurance cash but don't want the insurance to be over 2k. I think generally speaking brand new cars like a 2018 golf should be cheaper to insure right? Idk
My first year of insurance cost me around £1400 no black box as a full time student living at home in edinburgh for a K12 Micra, and its then went to £900 the next year, and down to £400 the following year (now full time student living away, registered at parents house in a village near edinburgh). I then discovered at the age of 20 i could afford the insurance of an RS Clio 200, at only £800! which this year has went down to £600. The only reason i could afford insurance on both my first or second car was, same as you, just trying out every possible legal combination i could and choosing the cheapest one. just for this year alone, my first quote was £1200 when i first checked, and so for the next week i would check every day, multiple configurations. had literally hundreds of quotes saved so i could choose the cheapest one at the end of the weak to go with. 100% worth the hassle on a tight budget imo
Few tips from my end, 3999 miles a year is the same as 3000 miles a year normally so worth doing that. Secondly don't buy the quote off the website, if you ring the insurance company direct they can often better it over the phone. Lastly, don't just look at fiesta etc. When I was looking for my first car I found that a 2.0 mazda 3 was cheaper than a 1.4 Fiesta. So get quotes on a variety of cars. Also for anyone wanted modified insurance, sky insurance or Brentacre are always the cheapest imo.
Interesting - I found that 3,001 miles was as expensive as 4,000 miles for some reason! Agree 100% if you call them and haggle, a much better shout, even if it's just to get a few thousand more miles for free etc 🤙🏽
My first car was kia picanto 1.1 2008 good city car and I've been drove it from North Yorkshire to London great car i was doing 70 to 95 mph I was paying 1600 a year no black box
I managed to get a 1.3l 1998 Ford Fiesta Mk4 insured without a blackbox for £1400 with Churchill. Put my parents on it for 2 named drivers, both with 25+ years experience and no claims etc. For some reason it was actually the cheapest or second cheapest option even though the rest had blackboxes lol
My personal favourite all around first car is a mk2 fabia estate 1.4TDI CR. Decently quick, good torque, practical, reliable (VW engine) and modern so you can have it specced with some good stuff. Also cheap to buy.
I've been looking closer into insurance, and I'm really quite angry because in my area a 1.0l Toyota Yaris cost just over £3000 as a baseline. And considering I want a big family car as my first car (nostalgia don't ask), specifically a 1.9L Ford Galaxy, I won't pay over £6000 for insurance. Will try these tips when I'm old enough. Thanks.
I got a 1.8l car for £942 for my first year (once moved to a low risk area) with a blackbox, it's critical you enter your driver license number to the quote site's especially for larger engine cars, no idea why.
Also good to do as many quotes with cars you might think are uninsurable, for example I live in north London and pay £1100 as a 17 year old for a Ford Fiesta Zetec S with 140 bhp. There were corsas which I did quotes on which were around 1600-1800 which only had 80-100 horsepower. Another example is a polo bluegt which surprisingly for me had an insurance price of 1300 with 158bhp whereas the 1L polo with 69bhp cost well over £1500 to insure
inusrance for me without black box just turned 20 is £1600 with 2 years driving 1 year ncb and a crash in last 3 years Current car is an ibiza 1.4tsi fr act and I found the longer you've owned your car the cheaper the prices.
4,000 miles a year is way too low if you ask me, I’ve only had my jazz since mid May and I’ve already done 1900 miles just driving to school and work twice a week in the next town over. Also, looks like you need a hair cut mate!! Another great video nonetheless, the amount of work and research that must have gone into this makes my head hurt. Quality content as usual 👌🏼.
Yeah fairdos - I think I do about 6,000 a year, but I do quite a lot of driving! When I was at school or uni I wasn't doing more than 3-4,000 a year somehow. Haircut will happen soonish - once my tan from holiday has gone a bit so I don't have a weird multicoloured head haha!
I could have used this a few weeks ago, I just got a 1999 audi s3 as my first car and got it insured for 2k. First car at 21 since I've been on mbikes my whole life.
One factor you didn't account for is age, I am 31, getting my first car, fully comp for a Mazda RX8 for example for just £700, likewise with a VW Golf and Mazda MX-5 which came out at just £675.
Putting my occupation as a forklift truck driver saved me well over 100 quid a month, also none of it makes sense really. I can get cheaper insurance on a Gold R32 and Mitsubishi Lancer evo x than on my fathers 1.2 Toyota. Live In the next street to mine? That'll be an extra 300 quid please. I also found that 2000 miles was the sweet spot, anything over that or below It raises prices. Worth noting - If you are someone who needs to put close to 10k miles, go for 12k miles. It's known that Insurance companies charge people with miles less than 11k more than people with over 11k to subsidise the higer mileage drivers costs. Putting higher than 11k will save you money in many cases.
Thanks for the info! I want to work out which occupations are cheapest to insure next, would be good to know even though in many cases you can't just change your job to get insured haha
Hello mate, I have been looking for insurance on a BMW 118d m sport coupe and the cheapest as a baseline is around 3 grand but I don't want to spend that cause that's how much I spent on the car. Have you got any suggestions on how to get it around or under the 2 grand mark??
you defenetly got better at making videos,,, nice to see your work gettin better

Cars With JB thanks, i can’t seem to find any insurance lower than 1800 though, any other tips? i’ve tried with a 2 & 5 door polo but no difference, 2 named drivers with 25+ etc but still can’t get it down
P try insuring the car overnight on a different road maybe? Sometimes it can be your specific road!
Cars With JB will do thanks👍🏼
Fair shout for sure - thanks for the insight!
Shieet, I used to be subscribed when you had just around 1000 subscribers, I’ve just come across this vid an thought why haven’t I seen any of your vids for ages an realized I wasn’t subscribed anymore (duno why) . You’ve come alonng way since I last watched your channel. Congrats on over 100K subs. Thanks for the Very helpful an informative research done, This video seems to of helped a lot of people out judging by the comments.
Great video JB, Insurance in Leicester for a polo 9n 1.2l is £581.28 including my parents, there is also an excess of £250 which brings the total to £630.46 for insurance which is from a company called GOGirl Insurance, this quote was done as a 17yr old as a student
That's so sick, £581-£630 would be amazing at 17 either way!
I've been driving a little while now but this video popped back up and i thought I'd let people know that using these tips I'm now driving a 1.6 astra sport with no black box for just over 100 pound a month, took alot of tinkering but couldn't believe my luck in the end. Great advice cheers bud!!!!
As my first car also
Ah that's great to hear, gassed for you man!
@@CarsWithJB good man wouldn't of managed it without this video bud👍
Like i said the last vid mate, you can really see the ammount of time and effort you put into these videos. You're going to have a massive following soon enough. Mark my words.
Appreciate it as always! Hopefully it keeps growing as well as it has 🤙🏽
You really did your research! Awesome work, look forward to trying these tips on my renewal
Appreciate it - hopefully it helps!
Just a quick one
I saw this vid which said do it annually as it saves, but if you can't afford to do it annually get a 0% credit card and pay it back monthly. That's what my mate did and it was fine👍
Glad it helped - best of luck with driving tests and getting a car/insurance etc! And as above, the 0% credit card trick is a good one of you can get it 🤙🏽
James Thompson can’t get a credit card under 18 tho mate
@@willitsucc9142 oh sound thought it was 16 for credit card 👍👍
The problem is living in london drives it up, watford is quite a rich area so it has lower crime rates etc, slightly over the border of london it gets up to 5k average, mine was 3k and the lowest I could get was 2.4k,
Also make sure you log in to your account on incognito mode, it gets cheaper and messing around with parameters doesnt increase it
Make more videos please. I find your content highly informative and entertaining.
Doing my best! Glad you enjoy the content 🤙🏽
Yeah the Swift 1.3 is a good shout, I included it in my last vid on cheap first cars actually and got a super cheap quote on it!
Now that is some seriously good savings for a 17 year old!!!
I thought so too!
I’ve got a 14 plate Ford Focus Zetec s and I’m still on my first year of insurance, it’s actually a really good deal because insurance in quite a rough area for me was only about £230 a month
That's not horrendous for a bad area, hopefully it comes down next year!
If it was anything like me the second year should be about half as much as the first one if you make no claims, also you've not done too bad on the price considering it's a "sports" model :D
I got £996 for my polo 9n3, one parent, in Nottingham. This video would of been handy a month ago 🤪 Nice work !
That's still not awful! Hopefully it'll help next year 🤙🏽
The best video on uk car insurance, well explained
Appreciate it!
Im going to move out of london. Its just daylight robbery with insurance :'(
Zain K i live on the wirral ( near liverpool) and the prices are just as bad x
teigan mcallow Same 😂😂
@@teiganmcallow8665 yeah I heard around Liverpool it's not as good. I honestly don't get it. I know it's because of some risks but they can't just put insurance up because of a few degenerates having accidents or stealing cars
Insuance is more than x4 of the cars value or even x5 so insurance companies think we are going to crash 5 times in a year
#sterotypes
Proper quality video mate, thanks for your efforts!
No problem - appreciate the support!
Best first car is mk3 seat Ibiza (2002 to 2008 model)
Yeah that's a good shout tbf, same platform basically as the Polo!
You’re a great RUclipsr, keep it up dude 😤
Appreciate it boss!
so this vid made my insurance on a 1.8l t mk4gti go from 3k to 1.6 and i have a claim of 2k from a mopen genuine legend
thank you so much
People that live in London 2023 - insurance is like the price of mortgage for 18 year old
From Leeds and WITH a black box it went from £1562 to £865!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and without a black box, £3-4k to £1055!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
No worries, so glad the video helped!
@@CarsWithJB It really did! and I got a VW Fox so almost the same as you lol!
Got my insurance from 3500 to 1900
Your absolutely a legend mate
Been following you for a while, honestly don’t know how you’ve not blown yet
Haha I'm still happy with the growth so far tbh!
what an incredible video! the amount of research and work put into this, amazing!
Appreciate it - glad you think so!
@@CarsWithJB I just turned 17 and this helped me out so much, saved just over £150 thank you so much!!!
I got a quote 2.2k for my polo 9n I live near Watford, did my age 20, sales advisor and wheels as a mod car value 500 so not bad for me I guess without a box
Yeah not awful, pretty local to me!
Bargain for not having a black box
Jus by changing from full time employee to full time student I save almost 2 grand on a black box insurance. Thank you
Britain, where a 5 door car is cheaper to insure than a 3 door even though they're specced the same. Why? Because a 5 door looks less scary.
Excellent in depth video. Thanks for linking me to this jb 👌
No worries, I hope it helps gets that quote back down!
Traditionally for a first car I would say “polo’s are good”.
However I would have to say the Audi a2 is my personal recommendation.
It’s very cheap to run
High quality
Amazing fun to drive
Unbelievably practical mainly down to the rear seats being removed by just one little button!
Disclaimer: only if you can get over the looks of the car :)
I think it's a pretty car too!!
Some people love them as well - and they do have a very good rep!
That’s my dream first car! Love the Audi A2. Looks fantastic & probably feels comfortable to drive in
I live in a rural county and I can literally get insured on 3.2 V6s for just over £1,000! It’s hilarious but pretty cool lol
That's so sick haha - super lucky!
I'm paying £3,600 for a 1.6 fsi...
How long have you been driving
WHERE TF DO U LIVE
First car was a 2014 Ford Fiesta zetec. Managed to get a no black box deal for 1800
L Battista from who? Mines a 1.25 and I pay £1000 with RAC and have a black box
That's decent without a black box - did well there!
Got my insurance down from 2.2k to 1.8k thanks to this video 🤝
I would advise people to use these principles, get a quote, call up the insurance company and tell them you have found a cheaper quote elsewhere (-300 of the quote you got) and ask them to match it.
Definitely agree - it's the best way 🤙🏽
This is gonna come so helpful when october comes round. Thank you so much
I hope so - no worries!
Most informative video I have seen ever. Thank you
I hope it helped!
Yo bro
Just wanna say you're madly appreciated man. Legit your videos are life savers
If you can, is it possible to make a video on the cheapest brand new cars to insure? I wanna get a car on lease or finance and pay the insurance cash but don't want the insurance to be over 2k. I think generally speaking brand new cars like a 2018 golf should be cheaper to insure right? Idk
Thanks for the support! Yeah I would like to do some new car videos in the near future, I'll have a look into it 🤙🏽
@@CarsWithJB will be waiting for it 👌
Yeah, you could try a quote for something like a new golf on the comparison sites, e.g. moneysupermarket.
Got a quote down from £3300 to £1250, thanks a lot!
£600 for the RS is solid stuff! Agreed re the work point, it just takes some time to get it down but you can do it.
I like the carbon wrapping inside the car!
Btw great video, I'm Irish so most of these tips will be the exact same
Appreciate it - did it last year and it's a fun little addition! Hopefully it does help 🤙🏽
I did a quote and mentioning that you have locking wheel nuts (which I’m almost sure 90% modern cars have) brings insurance down by up to 200 pounds
That's interesting - might give that a go as I have them on mine
I live in Watford this vid is great mate cheers
Ah nice I'm super close to Watty 🤙🏽
My first car was kia picanto 1.1 2008 good city car and I've been drove it from North Yorkshire to London great car i was doing 70 to 95 mph I was paying 1600 a year no black box
I managed to get a 1.3l 1998 Ford Fiesta Mk4 insured without a blackbox for £1400 with Churchill. Put my parents on it for 2 named drivers, both with 25+ years experience and no claims etc. For some reason it was actually the cheapest or second cheapest option even though the rest had blackboxes lol
That's very decent - you've definitely done well there!
Thanks.
Definitely give them a go - hate that we have such different prices around the country!
I got a 1.8l car for £942 for my first year (once moved to a low risk area) with a blackbox, it's critical you enter your driver license number to the quote site's especially for larger engine cars, no idea why.
Yeah it definitely helps - let's them check your record! As and when I get a nice car I'll be all over that
Also good to do as many quotes with cars you might think are uninsurable, for example I live in north London and pay £1100 as a 17 year old for a Ford Fiesta Zetec S with 140 bhp. There were corsas which I did quotes on which were around 1600-1800 which only had 80-100 horsepower. Another example is a polo bluegt which surprisingly for me had an insurance price of 1300 with 158bhp whereas the 1L polo with 69bhp cost well over £1500 to insure
Agreed - there are plenty of cars out there that very few young people drive which ultimately helps the insurance come down!
damn thats amazing fr, ik its been a long time lol but could i know any companies please?
I’m trying to get insured on a Audi A3 1.6 tdi I just got my licence and I’m 17 I’ve got the car it costs about 2,700 with a black box
2,700 is quite a lot - hopefully you can bring that down a bit, maybe try calling insurers to get the price down?
Loved this video so helpful my g
No worries, glad it helped!
Coming back to this video. Coming in clutch now.
inusrance for me without black box just turned 20 is £1600 with 2 years driving 1 year ncb and a crash in last 3 years Current car is an ibiza 1.4tsi fr act and I found the longer you've owned your car the cheaper the prices.
Yeah it definitely helps to have owned the car for a bit 🤙🏽
just got insurance on a suzuki swift 1.6 vvt sport for 645 pound THANK YOU!
I paid 1800 for a 1.2 Corsa with no black box In my first year of driving now it’s 920 for me second year on a 1.0 turbo
That's very decent for your second year 🤙🏽
Just changed from employed and put myself as a student insurance just changed from £4,877 to £2,773
I could have used this a few weeks ago, I just got a 1999 audi s3 as my first car and got it insured for 2k. First car at 21 since I've been on mbikes my whole life.
£2k on an A3 isn't awful considering! Shame that bike insurance doesn't carry across so well
£2k on an S3 for a first car, isn't all that dreadful to be honest lol.
@@CarsWithJB it’s an S3 mate not an A3 that’s VERY GOOD!!!!!
This is a brilliant video well done :)
Appreciate the support!
£2.4K for a 1L 3dr 09 corsa. I hate life
Wondering why my insurance quotes were so high when I realised i was using 10k miles per year
Still getting quotes on a 1.0 ecotech for £8000 a year lol
One factor you didn't account for is age, I am 31, getting my first car, fully comp for a Mazda RX8 for example for just £700, likewise with a VW Golf and Mazda MX-5 which came out at just £675.
got mine for just over £3000 down to £1788.40 life saver
This cut me for a polo from 1500 with black box to 990 without one
That's insane - glad it helped!
Amazing video ! Just subscribed
Thanks very much, appreciate the support!
not me getting 6k quotes on a 1 litre 5 door yaris 😅
As a 17 year old I managed to get my 1.2 corsa down to £892 with a black box or £1085 without, cheers.
It's pathetic that some of these insurance companies charge over a sodding grand when a banger is worth 300-500 quid..
Horrendous isn't it, actual daylight robbery!
I live in mosside paying 400 pound a month for a 1.3 yaris with black box
