8:00 part of the reason re why prices went up again is cause the regulator did act...but in the wrong way for those who used to shop around. Insurers now have to offer new customers the same price as current ones, which means those who used to shop around via comparison sites can't do so any more as insurers put up all prices for everyone. Might help those who never switched, but shafts the rests
I had a Skoda Octavia 1.9 tdi on an 09 plate and changed it to a 14 reg Sportage 1.7 crdi just recently. there was a month before my renewal date and as the Kia is a group lower I did not expect much of a rise. My quote was over double the last premium I paid. Last year it was £277 and this year the ins co wanted £580, so I went on a comparison website and found an AA police the same as I had with my last insurer which came out at £495. I managed to get my insurer to get it down to £499. What a rip off we motorists get on a daily basis.
As someone with a car in insurance group 2 who's been worried about the idea of leasing a new car in group 28, it's reassuring to see such a variety of group numbers on this list and that it doesn't affect the premium as much as I thought
The important thing to note is that it absolutely CAN, that doesn't mean it always WILL. Or certainly not always by as much as you think, certain insurers have different appetite too so it's not unheard of for an insurer to not always go along with insurance groupings when it comes to pricing.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuruAbsolutely, but I'll not let it put me off and I'll make sure I get a quote to actually make sure. Great video. Honestly think the best car in the UK is the Honda Jazz. Amazing reliability, economical, easy to drive and cheap to insure. If you are on a budget get one.
How crazy is this - my 2024 Mini Countryman S E is more expensive to insure than my 2023 D250 Defender 90 that has Offroad use included in the policy, BUT both of those cars individually cost less to insure than even the cheapest to insure on the list. One of the few bonuses of living in the Central Belt of Scotland rather than having a S E of England post code I suppose.
Wicked little video, Jim. Thsnks for the explanation at the end. Youre right though, in so many respects it is just Bananas! Thanks again for the information 👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers Jim firstly congrats on 45k subs on the insurance front we used to life in a real rough area ( at 1 point 27 cars burnt out in field at the end of the road) moved to a quiet cul de sack insurance went UP 😢😢
Probably because the cars in the car de sac were the ones being nicked - it’s never great to be in the best road in the worst area (you’re the target). Thanks for all the support mate
I thought that the insurance costs would relate to the insurance groups, however it does not seem to be directly comparable? As an insurance expert Jim, I would also be interested in your thoughts on excessive accident repairs for minor bumps and writing off of easily repairable cars. I have watched a few RUclips videos by Saving Salvage who has purchased writeoff repairable cars and has fixed them with a minimum of cost and time. A recent one that particularly springs to mind was a nearly new LR Defender which was classed as a Cat S write off. However when he repaired it, the car had no structural damage and was repaired with £3K's worth of parts and a day of his time. Sounds like somethings going wrong with the whole process somewhere?
It’s badly broken. Insurers basically have to use new parts and guarantee the work that’s done for 2 years. You could often do the job yourself with used parts for 10% of the cost and offer no guarantee of course. A lot of your premium is going directly into unnecessary costs to meet the regulators requirements around fair pricing (which have effectively wiped out an insurers ability to offer a good price to attract new customers and therefore punished everyone who previously shopped around).
Hi Jim, I’m 18 years old and I just got my provisional license. I am looking at a volkswagen polo now and the cheapest insurance quoted as £2000 annually (with black box), but if I change my license details into a full uk driving license, the insurance price went up to nearly £7000, so I want to ask if I purchase the car now with my provisional license and get my full driving license later, will my insurance price go up to £7000?
Yes. The reason it goes up is because you’re a much higher risk when you have your full licence as you can go out and drive on your own. Maybe try getting some quotes on some lower grouped cars (VW Up, Toyota Aygo etc). That’s sensationally high so really shop around for the insurance.
I thought the £325 to insure my little Jeep in Bristol was a lot until I saw these “average” prices! As the election is coming up have any of the big parties spoken about the rising insurance costs and any plans to deal with it? Really helpful video by the way
You spoke about personal injury claims. I always wonder if some of that money should go to the NHS, because at some point in that injury the NHS will probably have been involved, even if it is just the first responders or the GP referal. Thanks for the info. I thought my insurance renewal was a rip off, but far cheaper than those prices listed here. I ‘dumped’ my previous insurer who I had for years, and obviously did not want me as a customer when I saw the renewal price at over double the previous year! Shopped around and found a cheaper option will the same cover from a reputable insurer.

👍👍👍 I listened to a programme on Radio 4 last week on motoring insurance. One gentleman phoned in to give his daughters experience. She is eighteen years old, worked as a teaching assistant. Her insurance cost £1,600 per year. She changed her job and became a courier delivery driver. The use of her own vehicle did not change and she drove a works vehicle for deliveries. After notifying her insurance company that she had changed her employment the insurance rose to £4.600😲. The only way she was able to slightly reduced the premium was to take her mother OFF her policy. From what I understand usually ADDING an older person can reduce the premium.
