    One thing I love about this scene and what makes it extremely powerful: The heroes just don't sit back and watch Galuf die when he's about to, they try EVERYTHING - Curaga, Raise, Phoenix Downs, Elixirs - Yet none of them work as Galuf fades away. He overworked himself during the fight against Exdeath that the healing methods you've been using through the game up till that point probably straight up don't work anymore. He's truly gone, and it hurts to see.

      That part really struck me too. In other FF deaths, there's no mention of these, which only makes Galuf's death a bit more impactful (at least as FF lore is concerned)

My Bartz in my ffv playthrough didnt even know curaga, and lenna didn’t even know raise lol, but even THEN the scene still struck me soooo hard... galuf was BY FAR my fav character in ffv, and it was beyond sad to see him go.

    Galuf at the start of the game: goofball, probably your best monk, and probably the first to die when you make a mistake in a battle.
    Galuf in that fight: Dies after showing why he is a warrior of dawn, pushing through what can only be described as a hopeless bossfight... AND HE WINS.
    This is why I like him so much. He just gets some HEAVY character development once recovering his memories. He's still a goofball, but he can, and WILL get serious.

      Galuf's death was powerful and perfectly executed, Aerith was only killed because they "had" to kill someone, what hurts the most considering that in terms of skill set you can immediately replace Galuf but you never get another OP healer like Aerith. Galuf did make Exdeath retreat, Aerith cast Holly and even after being killed she used the lifestream to push meteor allowing Holly to destroy it (I doubt it was out of spite since she was really kind hearted and well tempered). In the end both did what they thought necessary to protect the others, I really like both characters and I don't get the point in comparing them.

      But why Aerith's death is most painful than other characters?

    • @ElementalScepticism
      @ElementalScepticism Год назад +7

      @@MarleHunter85 Being completely honest, it's more that Final Fantasy VII was the first Final Fantasy game to be 3D, and drew a massive amount of attention for that in particular. Because it was the majority of western fans' first Final Fantasy, a lot of people have a great deal of nostalgia when looking back at it.
      Aerith's death is, in my opinion, not the saddest death in the series; but because she's such an iconic J-RPG character, her death is mourned as the biggest tragedy in the series by some players.

    • @RichterTheRat
      @RichterTheRat Год назад +9

      I think it hits harder because FF5 when compared to the rest of the series is really light hearted. Galuf's death was like watching your father figure pass because that's what he felt like to Bartz and co. His sacrifice is more relatable.

    • @ElementalScepticism
      @ElementalScepticism Год назад +3

      @@RichterTheRat This is great insight; the heroic sacrifice or tragic death trope can be hard to pull off without it seeming forced, or easily predictable. The fact that it's so emotionally significant in the game plays quite a large role.

    One of the interesting things about this scene is it is also an insight into ExDeath and what drives him. As powerful as he was he couldn't grasp what was driving Galuf to continue fighting against all odds: ExDeath was a demon that while infinitely powerful had no concept of love or compassion.
    That is the reason he eventually chose to flee with the crystals. He was completely incapable of understanding the emotion that propelled Galuf and it intimidated him. It was one of the only two times ExDeath truly felt fear, the second time being when the Void failed him then turned on him during the endgame.

    Galuf died with a single shot by Exdeath.
    The fact he denied death and continued fighting is insane. Even Exdeath is confused on why he wont die.
    He lived through the fight even when he is dead and managed to beat Exdeath. Then dies after.

      He waa a tree that was once used to seal away evil spirits and such. Maybe they sealed away some evil sorcerers or necromancers. That's how he knows the spells maybe.

    Played this one years after I played FF7. Never thought they could hit me as hard as with Aerith again, but damn I was wrong... But if remember right, you can actually see it coming. I remember Aerith getting a very OP limit break a couple of hours before she dies. And I remember getting this super strong attack with Galuf that was also totally OP, so my first though was "uh-oh, I hope they won't kill him soon, maybe just guve him amnesia or something ..."

    • @imacommentator
      @imacommentator 11 месяцев назад +2

      Similar but they are actually complete opposites. Exdeath is a truly evil entity, while Golbez is a good person under mindcontrol. Galuf fights till his last willing to protect them and Tellah sacrifices all his lifeforce in misery and hatred while trying to avenge his daughter

    • @NeoArashi
      @NeoArashi 8 месяцев назад

      Golbez isn't evil. His negative emotion made him an easy target for Zemus. Heck, in the end of the game, he actually goes to the moon to settle the score with source of all the game's evil, Zemus, and even kill him. (Although Zemus' hatred made so he was revived into a much more powerful form, Zeromus)
      Exdeath is a creature born of pure evil and hatred.

      His original name is (Exodesu) in japanese, "Exodus". But in the fan translations and early official translations, it was X-death, and now the official final version, Exdeath. I think Exodus is more cool, but Exdeath is better than X-death... or almost the same thing...
