Myself I always remove the base trim. Toe nail screws down as temporary stops, so you will have a more stable stop as you start the first rows since you will hammering towards it! After install of flooring Screws are removed and base re installed on top of flooring. I do this because if you don't your base trim becomes shorter and looks cheap! If you think of it, drywall does not touch the floor, so there's a 1/2" gap. Then you have the base trim, that's another 3/4" gap that's a 1 1/4" gap total!! When only 1/4" is required for laminate!! Also the very first thing you must do and its the most important and was left out of this video is is calculate the rip measurement for your beginning run and ending run. The last thing you want is a 1" strip ending your last floor run!!

Good video. Two tools I highly suggest for those who dont have the tool setup like you do. One is a heavy duty scraper. Seems like overkill or expensive ($20-$25) but I has been worth it. I found that using it with quick thrusts will cut right through those tack strip nails that just won't come out. Especially the ones in concrete. The other tool is an oscillating tool (I use a Ridgid cordless). You will be so glad you spent the money.

Good video, consider precutting two sets of starters. One set at 16" spacing and another at 12" this will give you a better stagger without lining up seems every two or three rows. Also you can eliminate the need for a puller by leaving room for pry bar it will pop in much easier without risk of marring your butt seams.
The only way to never make a mistake is to never do anything. A few suggestions that I found helpful. My laminate flooring had the pad attached so when I cut it with a jigsaw I had to cut it with the good side up. I purchased reverse tooth blades so it would cut on the downstroke and not the upstroke this left a very clean cut on the good side. I used this in the kitchen and bathroom and where there was a possibility of water damage I glued the joints together. On very long runs the material would not stay together when I lifted the board up so I used small pieces of duct tape to hold the boards together. If you have an area that you cannot snap together because you cannot lift the board up to insert it just shave a little of the tongue side off with a good wood chisel then glue the joint together. I did my floor about 15 years ago and it still looks great however it doesn't get a lot of wear and I don't have any pets.
Great to know! Thank you so much I'm a handyman/renovator so someone wanted me to do this in their whole house but it's kind of the same thing as tile but it doesn't look so time consuming

Great video. Love that you showed the common errors that the layman will so clearly encounter. Love the little hints and tricks that you learned or had to figure out too. These videos give me confidence to try these projects before I just pay out big money for professionals.
completely agree with Waszak's comment. Love the honesty and the fact you left in the video the noted errors cuz we all make them! I'm pumped to start laying floor now.
Thanks for sharing this video it's much appreciated, am installing laminate flooring for the first by myself am really enjoying it as well thanks again.
I literally just did this with my two bedrooms. Ripped out all the carpets and put in laminate flooring. I don't have all the fancy tools - only used a jigsaw. My brother does have a circular saw but I was a bit scared to use it as I've never done this before. The flooring is quite easy to install but the hard bit was using the jigsaw to cut around the inbuilt cupboards/wardrobes in both rooms. There's a trick to using a jigsaw to cut U shapes and my brother ended up doing it for me. My "closet" was quite complicated to go around.... but in the end we figured it out!
Plenty of uses for old carpeting. Put a piece under your car (w/ a sheet of plastic underneath) to catch oil/fluid drips. Lay a piece in front of your workbench to help your feet. Line your car trunk. Pickup bed, too. If it gets rained on, so be it: it's already dump fodder. Leave it at the dump when you make a dump run.
Double Dare Fan yes, one last repurpose! I saved a big piece from the closet and another from under the bed. Best pieces, almost new. It will be used as a big runner in the garage, to kick off shoes before going in the house.
Great video! Excatly how it should be, any job can throw trial and error. A good honest video showing the errors he made along the way, even professionals had to start out at some point. The end result looks perfect 👌, that's all that matters. Even with mistakes with laminated flooring & real wood planks, alot of the time you'll find that it can be used elsewhere in the project any way. So not to worry on wasting the boards. I've just invested in a contour gauge for my current/future flooring projects and it makes life a whole lot easier cutting around akward shapes and pipework. Take your time, makes mistakes and seek ways to rectify and learn from them, Were only human! You'll eventually see your efforts pay off. Your not learning if your not having the odd mistake or two. Credit where credits due, a job well done.
Glad to see you using that tapping block. Or piece laminate so freely. Made my installation much easier. Less paranoid about giving the board a bit of a hit.
Came out great! In case you were not aware, the finish on the top of the laminate is very hard on saw blades. It is great for the durability of the floor, but will wear out the blade very quickly. There are some specialty blades made just for laminate flooring.
Trip for getting the carpet tack strips up.....use a rounded shovel....just put the tip right where the nail is and lift it up. Saves your back tremendously. Use that same shovel to get up carpet staples
Very well illustrated. Thanks. Your easy to follow and your knowledge of this particular project taught me a few things, Being your first time instal surprised me. You installed flooring like a pro.Shout out from Bklyn.
Wow, I thought you had to adhere the laminate flooring to the base floor? It's much easier than I thought. Here in South Africa most of our floors are concrete so this was just what I needed to see... Nice job
Thanks! And nope, they’re called floating floors for a reason, no need to adhere them and you actually are not supposed to, since you need to allow for movement.
Hi Branden, there's a good chance you have been watching videos of people laying hardwood flooring which needs to be nailed and glued. Laminated boards such as in the video don't need such treatment, only an expansion gap either end of the room. Hope this helps!
Nicely done Johnny. Looks like a nice system with the underlayment. The quarter round you referred to is typically called “base shoe”. It has a tall and a narrow side and is installed with the tall edge up as you did. Typical quarter round is symmetrical. Most home centers sell both and they can be easily confused.
Thanks for showing your mistakes, as a carpenter I was just gonna start snapping these together and cover up the ugliness on the edges when done. Glad I watched though cause I've always used a fine to cut the bottom of trim and I almost always butcher it. Def gonna pick up the flush trim saw before I start lol.
I've done quite a few floors over the years. I will be replacing the laminate in three rooms because we had 2 1/2 inches throughout the house due to Hurricane Ian. Now the first thing I do whenever I put laminate down is remove the baseboards. Yes, it's extra work but makes life easier overall. In my case now, I am replacing the 3 1/4 baseboards with 3/4 by 5 inches. I could put 1/4 round on top but I'm not. Pergo is a good laminate and that is what I use 90% of the time.
I personally prefer to remove all existing skirting, lay the flooring, then install new skirting. Gives a much nicer finish that makes the flooring look more like it was always part of the room.
By."skirting" - he means baseboard. By removing the baseboards first, a 1/4 round or shoe molding might not even be necessary.; it's really a personal preference.
I Love the flooring and the gray walls could you give me the name of the color gray and the name of the flooring, I have been looking to decide what to do with my Family room. You did a great job !
Been doing flooring for quite a few years now. We never use those fancy spacers. No room is square so we just eyeball it pick a wall (preferably and exterior wall) and square it. Also a floor chopper will make your life sooooo much easier instead of back and forth trips to the chop saw all day. I also admit I cringed when he used WHITE quarter round for that door transition, but for a DIY not bad.
A floor chopper is just a cutting blade much like a big paper cutter. Mark the piece of flooring, insert, and use the handle to chop the flooring. No power. No cords. Light weight. Just carry it with you as u work. U can also score and snap with a blade and straight edge. Yes u can start under the base board as long as there's still a quarter inch gap
Hey, how can I install laminate flooring around steal door frames if there's no gap to slide the plank under it? Normally with wooden door frames I just trim them.
The big difference between a journeyman and an apprentice, the journeyman doesn't talk about his mistakes. Thanks for keeping it honest, unless your just trying to make us feel better lol
Been a building contractor for years. We are none of us perfect! Good to see someone show the regular people how easy some of this is if they just think and have a little ability and tools at hand. You have no idea how much of this I have removed where no underlay was placed. :( Its good to see someone not ashamed of the occasional stuff up at work. We all do it when minds are on other things. A good tradey bounces back with a quick fix, rather than yell about it. Good vid, bro!

I’ve never seen it done this way before. I’ve been installing floors for almost 6 years now and I connect the laminate with the width side first, then use a rubber mallet to hit it in length-wise. Your method takes 10x longer. The only benefit with your method is ensuring none of the locks break due to the hitting of the mallet as stated in my method.

My dad installs hardwood and i help him out...easier to connect the boards together width wise, then after that you just lift up one side and tap it back legth wise, some wood dont even need a hammer you can pull em back and theyll click in.
I understand, that you do it like it's done in the vid, when you're working alone because (depending on the width of the room) it's difficult to lift up the whole row by yourself. However, working together, the way you described it, is easier.
@@juanbadillo1373 ...instead of tapping the installed piece directly, use a scrap piece that you can temporarily 'lock' in and use the hammer on the outside edge of the scrap piece to distribute the force evenly along the installed board edge.

Great to know! Thank you so much I'm a handyman/renovator so someone wanted me to do this in their whole house but it's kind of the same thing as tile but it doesn't look so time consuming
I'm doing my flooring and found this video more helpful and I'm excited to start my flooring. I used a floor scraper to remove my tack strips. It was fast lol I'm all set to go now. Thanks for sharing this video.
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
I've put floors down a couple times. Idk why but I find it fun
Thanks for help to refresh my memory on laminate installing. There is no water in your video and for 11 min you covered all the basic, it's appreciated. The only thing I wish you to show your tools closer, then I know what to look in the store.
Thanks, glad the video was helpful!
This is great video for the beginner who is going to install laminate floor by DIY.
Thanks for sharing this video it's much appreciated, am installing laminate flooring for the first by myself am really enjoying it as well thanks again.
Damn, i never installed my own flooring before, watching this is pretty cool
Good ideas!
It's also great for lining kennels.
Double Dare Fan yes, one last repurpose! I saved a big piece from the closet and another from under the bed. Best pieces, almost new. It will be used as a big runner in the garage, to kick off shoes before going in the house.
I like how you showed your mistakes that way it helps others

NICE JOB. THIS WAS EASY TO FOLLOW. I'M GOING TO DO MY FIRST FLOOR AFTER CHRISTMAS. THANKS FOR SHARING! AWESOME JOB!
Great video sir! I appreciate how you included your mistakes. Much respect! Look forward to seeing more of your videos
Thanks for showing all the "oops" moments ❤
Glad to see you using that tapping block. Or piece laminate so freely. Made my installation much easier. Less paranoid about giving the board a bit of a hit.
Came out great! In case you were not aware, the finish on the top of the laminate is very hard on saw blades. It is great for the durability of the floor, but will wear out the blade very quickly. There are some specialty blades made just for laminate flooring.
Yea I found that out the hard way. Time for a new bandsaw and miter saw blade!
Thank you. Of all flooring vids, yours was the most straight forward
Thanks!
Glad to see you put the Singletrack Sampler to work. You helped him out a lot with his van build, and he owed you!!
Trip for getting the carpet tack strips up.....use a rounded shovel....just put the tip right where the nail is and lift it up. Saves your back tremendously. Use that same shovel to get up carpet staples
Dammittttttt I need you to come complete my flooring. Such an awesome job 👏🏽
Great video - thanks for keeping the mistakes in. Makes it way more useful!
i’m redoing my room and this helped a lot thank you so much.
Very well illustrated. Thanks. Your easy to follow and your knowledge of this particular project taught me a few things, Being your first time instal surprised me. You installed flooring like a pro.Shout out from Bklyn.
Thanks!
I've seen loads of videos of people gluing and nailing down their floors. This is far easier...
Hi Branden, there's a good chance you have been watching videos of people laying hardwood flooring which needs to be nailed and glued.
Laminated boards such as in the video don't need such treatment, only an expansion gap either end of the room.
Hope this helps!
Audioholic .
Brilliant work 👏 bro 👍 👏 🙌
Nicely done Johnny. Looks like a nice system with the underlayment. The quarter round you referred to is typically called “base shoe”. It has a tall and a narrow side and is installed with the tall edge up as you did. Typical quarter round is symmetrical. Most home centers sell both and they can be easily confused.
Thanks! And that’s interesting, it was sold to me as quarter round and definitely was confusing when I went to install it.
I thought it looked like shoe molding and not quarter round.
It’s really tough staying away from such a well laminated floored home
You dont look like a beginner anymore keep up the good work and when it’s all set and done look back and i be proud of yourself
good job for perfection i recommend removing the original base trim
Why?
By removing the baseboards first, a 1/4 round or shoe molding might not even be necessary.; it's really a personal preference.
thats what i do
Glad you said that as I've got to do this soon, including replacing the skirting. Hopefully the new skirting will hide my dodgy cuts lol
@@alphabetta2001 Only in the US. Called Skirting board in Europe. ;-)
Dave Watts and Australia 👍
Great video. I like the way the work was communicated simply and clearly.
I Love the flooring and the gray walls could you give me the name of the color gray and the name of the flooring, I have been looking to decide what to do with my Family room. You did a great job !
Thanks for the vulnerability moments with the mistakes. That helped more than one way.
TheFoxSaid lol as an installer I always come to RUclips to see how other people. And I can’t stand watching them with out laughing lol
What is a "floor chopper" ? A small trim miter saw? Those seem pretty handy to have.
Excuse me for my ignorance but could he have started his row under the baseboard if there is room? It seems like they would fit all around.
Great job! I agree with the other guys, not editing out the mistakes actually helps understand better.
Thanks Karl!
Hey, how can I install laminate flooring around steal door frames if there's no gap to slide the plank under it?
Normally with wooden door frames I just trim them.
A angle grinder, with a black metal cutting blade.
Use a round pointed shovel to remove tack strips. I did a huge master bedroom in about 15 minutes with no damage to the base boards.
Haha, cracked me up. "Well, that's not gonna work". I appreciate showing the errors, adds value.
Thanks, we all make mistakes, hopefully y’all can learn from mine!
I have done this flooring already but didn’t know how to do the threshold strip, so am really grateful to see how that’s done. Great job 👍
Thanks Sharon!
Crafted Workshop .3
The big difference between a journeyman and an apprentice, the journeyman doesn't talk about his mistakes. Thanks for keeping it honest, unless your just trying to make us feel better lol
great instructional video. trying this in my kitchen to replace water damaged laminate.
"Well that's not going to work". My choice of words would have been a little more explicit.
The magic of editing 😂
Been a building contractor for years. We are none of us perfect! Good to see someone show the regular people how easy some of this is if they just think and have a little ability and tools at hand. You have no idea how much of this I have removed where no underlay was placed. :( Its good to see someone not ashamed of the occasional stuff up at work. We all do it when minds are on other things. A good tradey bounces back with a quick fix, rather than yell about it. Good vid, bro!
Thanks Ricky! Totally agree, everyone makes mistakes, lots of people like to pretend they don’t.
The worst thing about men. Going bad shit crazy over a minor convenience with plinths..
@@craftedworkshop hi there, I'm a widow and live alone. I plan on redoing my floors. I've got nothing but time to do this yet I don't have a ton of tools. I don't have table saw, I think that's what you call it. But I do have hacksaws and jigsaw. Should I still do this project with only a hacksaw and or jigsaw? How would I remove Ed's when I need to with either a hex or jigsaw?
Thanks for sharing, I installed in 2 rooms, very helpful tips on this video
What paint color is on your walls
Some people say moisture barriers/underlayment over concrete slabs can create mold because they trap water underneath with no way to evaporate. Now that it has been a couple
years since your install, can you give an update regarding any issues with mold or musty smells? Also, did you check concrete moisture levels prior to this install. Thank you for a great video!
taking out a carpet is so satisfying
great video! we just ordered this exact same floor at Lowes, then came home and I found your video. I wanted to see how it looked
and I love it! (lowes is doing the install.)
Awesome job, I learned so much from this vid. Good to see the single track sampler fetching in. You’re one of the finest dude I saw when it comes to carpentry.
Thanks man!
Thank you very much your video is much better than the other ones are saw you made it plain and simple the way you excited you made it more easier to understand thank you
thanks for this content ! I'm excited to learn more and be able to do my own simple renovations at home
This was my first video I've watched from your channel. What a great informative video. I'm a subscriber for life now! I'm set to redo my living room and hallway. I'll send you pictures of before, during and after! Thanks for the help!!!!
That’s great, good luck!
Great job i do all different flooring jobs my self i work for carpetland and some of those jobs can be a pain especially door jams and tite spots i like how u notched the last piece to get it in there ill keep that in mind
I’ve been in several businesses with this type of flooring and it seems to shift and buckle a lot since theirs nothing to hold it in place.
Ok Thanks for the video. When mine comes in the mail i will return to
follow step by step. I have a question for you. Am i limited as to what
size drive i put in. Let's say i had purchased a two bay. Would i have
been able to put in Two Ten TB drives? can i leave two bays open till i
purchase more drives? and if i want to look at saved videos in another
state, will i be able to? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks
You will most likely have staples to pull up, as well as the tack strips.
Not on a concrete slab, but yes on a wooden subfloor.
He said at the beginning he had to remove tack strip
Tip for removing tack strip. Use a shovel. I know it sounds crazy but it works wonders. Just be careful lol it made easy work though!
My dad installs hardwood and i help him out...easier to connect the boards together width wise, then after that you just lift up one side and tap it back legth wise, some wood dont even need a hammer you can pull em back and theyll click in.
You know what ur talking about same thing i was saying whats all the hammering for that usually can damage some boards without you noticing
Yes .....Its called "Drop lok" very little tapping required.
This isn't wood it's laminate....
Man u make this look so easy. Thanks for putting in the mistakes too, cuz u know, human and all :)
You make this look so easy!!
Been there...made all those mistakes and then some. I liked some of the tips you showed with the pull bar...next time I'll use that trick. Great result.
06:40 man I have done that way too many times. I appreciate you not editing that out :D
Would be funny if he actually did way more mistakes and edited them out. But, Left one in to seem legit.
Thank you so much!! This really helped my wife and I, I really appreciate that you were open about the mistakes you made. It helped me feel like less of an idiot lol.
I have watched so many of these videos so that I might prepare for an upcoming first time install. What I feel gets skipped over oftentimes is how to cut down if necessary the first and last row of boards so that we don't start with a full width at one end then end of with a one inch plank at the very end.
