      Spot on!!! Laying this in a old house were the corners are not perfectly 90 degrees is a whole different experience. Besides that if your really unlucky (like me) and it your really close to a perfect fit but not there. You end up with a lot of waste.

    In 50 years of flooring, wood, laminate, LVT, the amount of herringbone I`ve done up until 5 years ago I could probably count on both my hands. 5 years on I must have done around 50-60. Just shows how much en vogue it is at the moment. As above, if its a drop-lock system it's a lot easier, trouble ensues when both length & width have to be angled in at the same time. Can be a nightmare!

    Hi Nick. I am hoping you can help me! What type of laminate floors are you installing in this video? I have had multiple contractors tell me that most laminate cannot be installed in a herringbone pattern and that I need a very specific type of laminate flooring that can be glued down, but I cannot find any that can be glued down.

    • @cgale337
      @cgale337 2 года назад +1

      Judging by the photos at the end of the video it looks like they installed quarter round or shoe molding afterwards which hides any gaps. If you didn't want to use molding then you would definitely need to make sure the gap is hidden under the baseboard which would indeed require removing boards and reinstalling IF they weren't installed high enough to allow the floor to slide under.

  • @bubbalo3388
    @bubbalo3388 2 года назад

    Question. I currently have vinyl (not vinyl planking) in my kitchen and carpet in my family/living room and hardwood in the main entryway. I want to lay laminate or something throughout the whole house. Once I rip away all the old floor coverings will there be differences in the depth between the different rooms with different flooring materials? If so will it be as simple as just laying like 1/4, 1/2 inch thick boards for example? I assume for example that the rooms with rugs will be lower than the the kitchen floorboards with vinyl because you have to adjust for the thickness of the padding and rug whereas vinyl is not as thick.

    • @sage_spartacus
      @sage_spartacus 2 года назад

      If you are removing the current flooring the sub floor should be the same throughout

    • @bubbalo3388
      @bubbalo3388 2 года назад

      @@sage_spartacus isn't there variations in thickness between hardwood planks, thin rolled vinyl and carpeting with padding that would creat differences in depth when laid down next to each other?
      For example let's say carpet and padding adds up to say 1/2 inch thickness and transition it next to rolled vinyl flooring and the vinyl is say 1/16 or whatever it s thick?

    • @sage_spartacus
      @sage_spartacus 2 года назад

      Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but if you want to lay new floor you will be removing the current carpet, vinyl, and wood flooring correct? Those materials are all different thicknesses but when you remove them you have a plywood or concrete subfloor that is the level throughout your home

    • @bubbalo3388
      @bubbalo3388 2 года назад

      @@sage_spartacus correct. I would be removing different types of flooring thoroughly the house. I know the subflooring would be the same throughout the home but I thought remembered when the home was being built that the kitchen had sheets of board laid down in the kitchen with the vinyl to build it up like a 1/4 inch or so.

    • @sage_spartacus
      @sage_spartacus 2 года назад

      @@bubbalo3388 I see what you're saying. We redid the floors in the house we bought and they ran a thin plywood under a vinyl flooring in the kitchen as well. Sorry, unless Herringbone is different, seems a lot of cutting to move 3 feet or so! Carpet fitters will probably say- keep it simple left to right! My first Laminate was a few years ago, the guy SEEMED to move like lightning left to right! In no time, MASSIVE difference to living room!

    Sorry again, what if 1 of the offcuts just refuses to fit? Still looks VERY messy to me! If someone suggests sideways to me I'll say NO WAY! This guy took an age do one room!

    Installing a herringbone laminate at the moment on what can only be described as the surface of the moon. It looks shocking. Make sure your subfloor flat people:)

    He uses same pattern tiles one next to another. Doesn't spread them across the floor. Then also, he starts at the wall. What would the room look like if you arbitrarily start ar the wall?
    I would determine a focal point of the room and start there and go to the walls. And i am not a floor professional. I am a consumer. If someone laid floor like that at my house, i would stop them right away. This is not right.
