I was at this show and it was a blast being there, but the actual show was nothing memorable. I sat all the way in the back middle section aisle seat. I recall a swarm of woman screaming for Mel Gibson on the ground floor of NBC. I also remember seeing Al Roker, and getting the autograph of Victoria Jackson who was in the NBC gift shop. She was on SNL at that time. Great memories. Had to wait almost three years for tickets to Late Night. The NBC Late Night with Letterman is my all time favorite late night show. Still holds up very well. Nothing else comes close to it.
Sylvanus Freelove Bowser (August 8, 1854 - October 3, 1938) was an American inventor who is widely credited with inventing the automobile fuel pump. Bowser Avenue in his hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana is named after him. -- Wikipedia Dave should have known that since he also is from Indiana.
Mel seemed nervous and a little thrown my Dave's jokes. Film stars today have to do so many press junket interviews that they tend to be much more polished and ready for anything interviewers might throw at them. Dave could he tough to handle in that era, though, because his style was so different from what anyone else was doing at the time. But we have now all adapted to that style. What was very unconventional then has become the norm.
Dave skipped one of the entries in the Top Ten List, about the California Raisins. With the topic being signs people are getting dumber, I was hoping he'd come back and point that out as one more sign! I could not understand Mel's second magic trick. Making his leg disappear? Seems like Mel lost his Australian accent within a few years after this? The "afterschool special" skit about Australia was hilarious! Very Simpsons-esque, the way they'd sometimes do a mock parody of a "very special" TV episode.
Hi Jeff, I am a big fan of Basia ( a singer) and I’m looking for the episodes with her ( interviews/ or just singing) I know one was in 1988. Would you have anything? Thank you so much for your help.
My guess is that it didn't appear on the screen for most people watching this episode, but just on the screen of whoever was taping this. Maybe something to do with the satellite service they were using. DirecTV? Just speculation. I am not interested enough to bother to properly research it.
I saw that and of course it would bring up some memory. ..did you have friends in the buildings....? What makes me sad is that in the following 17 years Americans have killed around two hundred thousand fellow Americans!! Just sayin...
Bobby McFerrin and the band killed that acapella performance
Traveling back in time is always fun. The 80's were something else!
PS and band are fantastic
Wil Lee is 2nd greatest bass player in the world!

GOOD STORY! SNL was great in those days, so was Dave.
Thank you so much Jeff for posting this. I miss Late Night with David Letterman sssooo much. Such good entertainment.
Yes, That's Paul as your announcer. Also a rarity...FULL END CREDITS!
When Gibson came out, I thought he was hammered. Funny enough, I had no idea about his history. I hope he is well.
@captainscentsible3938 Paul & the band picked up on it as they sent Mel off to the sounds of "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton.
@@staunchx It was 'Sunshine Of Your Love' by Cream.
this feels like a weird memory hole, because I cannot find anything else talking about this movie

The Sununu thing was the origin of Oprah/Uma.
Buttafuoco and Gilooly would soon follow.
Where can I find the set by Emily Levine? 32:53

Naaahh, he’s not even coked the fuck out. Lol
Sad but the opening reminds me of the 9/11 attacks now.

Seems like it’s the exact floor on the exact same side on which that building was hit.
Looks back at the opening of the show with the camera going into the WTC has to make Letterman cringe now it does for me
Doesn't sound like Bill Wendell one bit.
That's Paul Schaeffer
@@JorgeCat78 Paul, his band leader, announcing?
@@JasonDelarosa2000 Yep! The very same!
He looks but doesnt sound like a bloke from Peekskill.
Dave seemed annoyed by Bobby McFarrin. He was being a little weird
The pc is through the roof in 1988
