I’d go for the abstract…. Easier to maintain. Won’t show the accidental paint mishaps as much. I do like both rugs!
How exciting your own studio! I think it’s great that you can have classes! You are a good teacher. Just wish I lived close enough to take a few classes. Australia is just too far away to commute. Good luck with this new venture. ✨🎨💕

Hey Rachel. I am a licensed interior designer, retired now a watercolor artist. I just finished my own studio and the rug is an important element due to the nature of art materials. Your last choice of a thin rug is best and it’s also the biggest + the busier pattern will also hide any paint that gets on the floor.
Another choice you have for the rugs: at Home Depot online, they have a line of indoor outdoor rugs that you can simply hose off to clean. Think how handy that will be. And they seem to be a little tougher than residential. I love the rug I ordered and my chair casters do not catch. It’s very flat even with a pad underneath. Make sure to order a thin rubber pad or the rug will wear down fast. This rug is inexpensive as well. It is quite a large line and I’m sure you can find something you would like for less than typical. Mine was 5’3” x 7’6”, $68 rug, $24 pad.
I also noticed the tables are actually small. They’re 5 foot eight. You can only fit 2 people on each side, and one at the head and foot, if they are free . For classes think about auxiliary folding tables that you can easily push into a closet or stack in the corner like the chairs. The advantage to the tables is, they can also be used as desks. They look sturdy, however keep in mind that residential furniture is not made for the traffic a commercial space will have.
Another tip: since this room will function as both of classroom and possibly a studio for yourself it would be wise to get furniture pieces that are multifunctional and possibly with as many pieces with casters to make it easy to move around, so you can change configurations easily. Plus as you Continue and grow as you are success seems to be climbing, and I think it will continue to do so, functions of the room grow as well. I’m sure you need to do editing and filming and multi multiple other functions. Even in my small studio space, I made sure to have pieces with casters. Also keep in mind the need for outlets and furniture that has USB plugs for your own use and for classes as people will want their trustee device to paint from in addition to other functions.
    I hope that helps.
Possibly, I could give you a hand with a general floor plan- no charge. I know how it is.
The floor plan is the most important element. Make sure not to crowd the room. If you would like a little assistance setting up a floor plan, I would need the dimensions of the space on a floor plan if possible, or sketch of the room layout with dimensions, and any furniture you already have to go into it with dimensions.
    Best of Luck,
    SARA

I have folding tables as i host paint classes in my studio. My tables are 6’ to host people with canvases no larger than 12x16. Believe me, they need the room haha.

Thank you so much for sharing all your thoughts and I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner - my hubby has been out of town and life has been a zoo. I really do appreciate your ideas and those are all really good ideas. I might buy one more of those tables - I really love them but I want to luxury of plenty table space. I got some rolling chairs so I will have to look at those outdoor rugs you mentioned. I'll definitely email you if I run up again a design road block!

Congratulations Rachel! This looks like a great space! Soo exciting! I'm sure it's going to feel a little strange for a while not being at home and will take some time to adjust, but I have no doubt you'll make it a colorful, comfortable environment however you choose to decorate. Good luck with all of it! Can't wait to see your videos done from this location! 👍💜

I think an indoor/outdoor rug makes sense for an art studio! Thinner and more “waterproof”.

I think you can start with abstract rug for space where you'll do acrylics, and flower for space where you'll do watercolors :D Or any other separation you need, like office/editing area can have flower, because paint won't go there. I think flower is cheerful, and abstract is more practical for the purpose, but 400sqft is big space, I think both can fit in comfortably :D Start with abstract and you'll see if you'd like visual separation of space, then you might grab flower one :)

Yes I think using rugs to break up the space into project areas is what will happen - thank you for your thoughts!

Congrats on your art space! Have you thought about painting the chairs, a bright color to add some pop? They may rust. I’m in all different different colors these days.

Probably not as too much color will compete with the art I have hanging on my walls but that's a fun idea nonetheless!

Personally I love the flower rug. (the second choice.) The magnet pins are awesome. For hints on how to "fill" your studio, ask Angela Fehr, she's a watercolour artist with a studio. She might be able to give you pointers. Congrats on your new space. I'm sure you'll get plenty of students. You're such an awesome teacher!

Yay!!!! I’m so happy for you! I so wish I was near Columbia SC!!!!
I like the subdued blue & green rug - I don’t think it will compete with your artwork, it would be a nice background compliment. But that’s my opinion. The good thing about either choice is that if they get splotches of paint on them it’ll kinda blend in! I love those tables- what a great idea!

You are such an inspiration, I’m so happy for you! 🙌🏻
I’ll echo the interior decorator on the second subdued abstract rug choice. It is functional and would hide splashes, allow for rolling chairs, etc. I feel like the colors allow for it to recede as well.
    Congratulations 🎊🍾🎈!!!

I agree - I might get that for the workshop area - I need something thin that rolling chairs would not get caught up in!

I feel excited for you, what a large light inspirational space. Agree the abstract would hide the odd spill of paint etc, as it would only add to the pattern. I adore the other rug but think it would get dirty fast with the chairs wheeling back and forth over it. Hope all your plans and decorations go smoothly :)
