But for those of us who do not know, what was the identifying way that made you know it was female?? Was it by the jaw? The build? The color pattern?
Yeah, lariat ropes hold their form so much better and make the process much easier (makes sense I guess, lariat ropes were literally designed for catching big animals). As far as telling whether the gar is male or female, studies generally suggest that part of the sexual dimorphism that distinguishes male alligator gar from females is size, with females being larger in general. Since the gar in this general area of the city rarely break the 100lb mark, I just determined it was likely a female as it was close to that size. HOWEVER, what I've recently learned is that studies now suggest that the size differential is less a reliable method of determining the sex than the length of the head and snout and caudal fin (with these measurements being much finer). So with that in mind, it's entirely possible that it could have been a male (given that an 80lb fish, though large for the area, is still much smaller than what they are capable of growing to and therefor not too big to be a male). More learning is always a good thing so I'm going to stop stating the gender moving forward until I know more.
