Thanks so much for your comment - yes it was very stressful and we were blessed to have gotten away with relatively little damage. We had a similar situation in August of 2023 on our way to Minneapolis to pick up friends and head to Banff and Jasper. I bent a bracket on our Hensley Hitch trying to turn around at a busy boat ramp (thought it was the campground). Had to buy and put on a regular hitch. Tried putting a zip tie through hitch but I think I interfered with the hitch ball. Hit a big drop in road under construction and the trailer detached from my truck. I hit the brakes which caused the aluminum box around my propane to get deformed. Fortunately I had the safety chains pretty tight and the hitch stayed on the chains. I was on a fairly busy road (2 lanes each way), but I stopped in my lane until I could put the trailer back on the ball. I recently had the aluminum propane cover replaced (several hundred dollars at Airstream factory). Scariest towing experience I’ve ever had…I can relate to your situation. Thanks for the video.
Nice those chains were short enough to capture. Our situation is the chains are setup more for the WDH, which we had switched off of because we were planning to make a lot of short drives into campgrounds that might be pretty tight and harder to maneuver with the WDH. The WDH is longer and so the chains are more setup for that. They were not dragging or anything, but could be shorter for the standard hitch. Anyhow, they definitely didn't keep it from hitting the ground, but the brackets sure helped the rest of the trailer from being torn up. Really appreciate your comment here. I am going to investigate how I might get chains I can configure for both hitches. Another thing I realize is that our 7-pin plug was shorter than the chains! That's not good at all - as the brakes won't work of course when that comes unplugged. You got super lucky it sounds like in how your trailer dropped - and also lucky that you could get that replacement part pretty quickly.
