Pomme de Terre. I was recommended this channel by a friend. I've been gradually working through the Allegro conversion videos. I remember these cars back in the 1970's/1980's. My wife owned a brown Allegro estate when I first met her!!
Hey Gavin, great to see your ingenuity from here in Holland where I run a Nissan ENV200 and hoping to purchase sometime a Tesla. I used to do lot of motor / gearbox work on BMC in Hamilton back in the 70's so great to see your Allegro getting the electric conversion. I still have my Austin A30 in my Hamiltion garage patiently waiting for me, it has not seen the light of day for 35 years, so maybe u can do a barn find video of it
I’ll be in NZ at the end of April. It’s been good watching your content. You can thank Nikki Bloomfield from transport evolved for directing viewers to your channel.
Just tripped over this today, I like your style, your choice of music is great, I’m now going to have to find what else you’ve put out there! Thank you for the road trip as well, I’ve only ever stopped in your location on the way to elsewhere & certainly never across to Gisborne👍
Potato! We bought our Zoe from Steve at Drive EV, it’s a great city car with a good range. Looking forward to the build. You need to get a quartic steering wheel for your Aggro, though. Good luck!
Wonderful to see the scenery. Fantastic tow car. Take a picnic and drinks with you on another long road trip. Looks like you got a very fairly priced donor car
I really don't understand the RUclips algorithms- you are making interesting well produced high quality content and only get a few thousand views. Keep up the good work, hope you soon will get the number of views you deserve!
Ive been a long time viewer, started watching when i was 10 now im 20 and haven't missed an upload since I really appreciate your use of licensed tracks, its refreshing to hear some Spandau ballet or talking heads instead of the usual generic RUclips audio library Keep up the great work!
Sweetest person ever!!!!! Jfyi potato in hebrew is Tapouakh-Adama and it writes like this תפוח-אדמה... I did own an Austin Alegro back in the day. I loved it. Back then no one was talking about E cars at all.
When the algorithm recommends something awesome. Loved your video, had to comment. Subscribed and liked. Keep the great content coming. Natural charisma and commentary. Really enjoyed this video
Your Mitsubishi build inspired me to do My VW that has been on the road for 9 years. Just finished helping a buddy with his Fiat 850 with a Leaf motor and VW transaxle. Looking forward to your Leaf transplant.
Seeing that Allegro brings back some memories. My mate had one the same colour & engine size, back in the early 80s. Terrible cars! The electric conversion is the best thing that could happen to it.
I've always enjoyed your content.I've been watching since the early days of your first conversion and really enjoyed it all. I always look forward to each new video. Top quality videos at that. Kind regards from the USA.
@@KiwiEVadventures Good to hear!Best of luck from Sweden (with a Renault Zoe parked at the shop for four (4!) months. You make me want to do it all myself!
This was epic, mate. Besides the project of converting the Allegro, I got to see many things that I am interested in seeing. The Waioeka Gorge - haven't seen that in MANY years and to hear it was the only route in and out of Gisborne (due to the Napier-Gisborne road issues around Waiouru - and didn't THAT little town get a heavy dose of Gabrielle's wrath! I was off the grid when Gabrielle was doing her worst, so I've not seen how bad it was, but it sounded like most of the town was under water), was actually quite a shock! I remember the Waioeka being a road that was closed at least one a month due to slips, so I wondered how well it would do the job as the main route! The real world testing of the towing abilities of an electric vehicle were also great to see. Not hyped up by the dealer, not over-dramatised by some famous RUclipsr or other trying to send their video viral, just an honest Kiwi driving experience and telling it like it is...... .....and speaking of experience, by the way, I believe Ford Ranger drivers would behave the same whether they were electrically powered or not. In many trips to and from Wellington and to my family's home town in Whitianga, they are the one constant irritant besides Nissan Tiidas. If there is going to be an arrogant, law-flouting, self-obsessed moron who sits up your chuff when you are sitting on 110 already, then overtaking over double yellow lines, overtaking right at the end of a passing lane, overtaking on a blind corner, overtaking with traffic coming the other way, cutting in front of you with no room to spare and then slowing down for the car you are sitting behind, they will ALL be in a Ranger. Tiidas are just unpredictable as to how fast or slow they are going to be at any given time, where on the road they are going to be and in which direction they will go in next (and when that will be happening). They are just in a world of their own and oblivious of anyone and everything else on the road. Not that the Ranger is fazed about the Tiida - he just blasts past, causing the Tiida to swerve to the road shoulder, brake hard, then accelerate hard and drift back into the lane.....and then to the centre line and back (as they do). I found it quite amusing when the Tesla would not charge and then decided to work perfectly after being 'rebooted'.....and with holding those two buttons down, it sort of reminded me of the long-familiar , making me wonder if the beast was running Windows and didn't have all it's drivers loaded in the first instance or something! I definitely felt your pain though - things should just WORK and when they don't, it's infuriating, so turning it off and on again is the first thing we all try. Amazing what we've gotten used to doing because of one manufacturer's historically flaky operating systems, isn't it? LOL! I've got a few queries for you: - You mentioned (in Rotorua) that the trip had cost you about $70 so far. What was the total cost of running the Tesla from Taupo to Te Kuiti (via Gisborne) to retrieve the Leaf? - How many km was the total trip and did you figure out the total kW per 100km? - I've noticed even in the big cities that there appears to be a lack of charging stations for the number of EVs about. What was it like in the more rural areas and did every town have at least one? - How was the EV's performance on the steeper parts of the gorge / trip? Did she have enough grunt to tow the load without having to mash the foot through the floorboard? Did it ever feel like it was underpowered? - What made you choose the Tesla "Hulk" over another manufacturer for that trip? - Way back in the series, I offered to grab the Allegro's running gear off you when it was pulled out. Do you already have plans for it or would you like to take me up on the offer? All the best - and I am definitely looking forward to the next installation in this series!
Oh mate, I really appreciate the effort you've gone to in your comment. Thank you. I'm sneaking a few mins off my lunch break so I won't be able to respond with such dedication, but to do my best to answer, checking my app, the total charging cost was $113 NZD for 900+ km. Not too bad to be honest. Climate positive electricity, too. Unfortunately I was so tired at the end of the 24 hour trip that I didn't note an average kWh/100km. The number of charging stations in NZ is just brilliant. You can drive an EV anywhere a car can drive now, all running on electrons. As for performance, it had TOO MUCH POWER! 😀Seriously, it pulled like a train. Never once even broke a sweat. If I put my foot down the Leaf might have slid off the back. I barely used half of its power, even on the steepest hills. I got offered Hulk from Drive EV for free just because they're amazing people and Hulk has been hauling cars for years now. The EV community is just brilliant. Like a car club where everyone wants others to do well. It's magic. As for the Allegro engine & gearbox, it'll likely go for sale in the next couple of months I guess. It's done 63,000 km and for a gas-burning clunker, runs very well. Starts first turn. Make me an offer!
Amazing video! Been following you since 2020 when YT recommended me one of your adventures in Slovakia . And only a few days ago I realized that it’s actually your voice in our buses here in Bratislava 🤣
I've been following all of your adventures (and misadventures) since the Tredia when i was a spring chicken - so heartening to see you still at it in what seems to be one of the best countries in the world to own an EV. Us 'Strayans are envious.
Is this what you asked for?: POT TATTOO :D As always, I was wishing all the best for you from the moment I started watching this new video from you! Luck is kinda "around you": who would go through such a big trip to get something you didn't even see pictures off?! You are giving worrying sweat... now I have to wish you that: - the parts you need for your conversion are not cracked (happens with light alloys many times) by the forces of the accident it was in - the high voltage cables are not damaged (bending and sheering is bad for them) - the powertrain components will fit into a much different era car - you can get a Leaf battery (with all its DEADLY high DC voltage) that you can adapt with it's BMS to the system and even fit into... yet again... a completely different design and era car + the chassis of that little old car can take the heavy overweight of the whole Leaf EV system. Are you really prepared to re-engineer the suspension setup to fit the new weight balance? Wishing you (continued) best of luck there! :o)
It's great to be seeing some DIY potato projects from the og kiwiev long time sub. You inspired me to by an Nissan leave which I used for 5 years and delivered Chinese in it 4 nights a week. It was esentialy free car

He has not, but his welding dude has been really busy. 🙂Big new video coming within a couple of weeks, with luck.
Good to see progress. Must have felt wierd stepping from the Allegro to the Tesla. In my birthplace, potatoes are called "Perties" or Spuds.
Exciting plot twist in the petrol --> EV conversion saga
