Lovely vlog (again) Andrew. Reminded me so much of my own hard working father, who sadly when he retired, soon suffered ill health and consequently passed away too earlY. You hit the nail on the head when you say enjoy the things you like to do and often these things will cost little in money. Thanks
❤️ Please think about more motivational conversations! I was dusting ALL MY living room decor and while I was listening I realized how much time I was spending with a dust cloth in my hand......I piled a sizable amount of items I was taking to my fav nonprofit thrift store......I was moved by your story regarding your Dad's last years....you were an honorable son!
Well said mate, I don't normally comment but that was truly inspirational. love the life you have, I have so many friends and family that do nothing but chase the money to be better then each other, the only topic of conversion is money and status, working day and night for fear of falling behind the pack... It dose take courage to say I'm not one of you. Time is so precious, well done.
100% right, and they are trying to convince people working into there eighties collecting trolleys at asda ETC is ok, cant understand why people want millions or billions, when what your doing is more rewarding. WE are here for such a short period retire when your comfortable and to enjoy life.
I lost both my parents in the space of 9 months, aged 63 and 64, so neither got to draw a days pension. So I am mindful how quickly it can all change. I have managed in the last few years to get my OH to stop working weekends. Next aim is to get him to cut down to 4 days a week! There is nothing better than out in nature, seeing amazing sunsets or sunrises or just something that takes your breath away because it so beautiful.
Dawn Allard Absolutely Dawn! So sad to hear about both your folks, but like you say, it sharpens the senses as to what is truly important and beautiful.
great update Andrew, thanks for speaking the truth and having the courage to tell us about your dad. Same thing with mine, WW2 child, we lived with austerity in the 70's , sharing half a chicken between 4 of us, saving the other half for the next day. We weren't poor by any means, it was just life back then. Anyway, he died at 62 before he retired and could spend time for himself again.
For good or bad, it changed the way I way view retirement! rather than making more money in a miserable job, while waiting for retirement, I choose a more interesting and stimulating career where I really enjoyed my working day. I'll work longer than some of my friends and won't be traveling the world in 1st class cabins at 70, but I'll have lived life to the full everyday ... the thought of sitting on a tour bus at 70 with a bunch OAP's just isn't my style ! I own a 1972 Airstream, that'll be my retirement project ! and intend to full-time travel across the US later on when the mortgage is cleared off. all the best to you , I enjoy your videos .. !
You are so right. Me and my partner work hard why for? bills, bills and more bills. We have everything most people want. These things don't make me happy. Going full time next year. Some responses from people include what about your cleaning? what about your stuff? Time is so precious. I want time with my friends and family, all the things I have missed because of work that I will never get chance to do again. Love your vids. So inspirational ❤
Thanks Kirsty. Sometimes we just need to stop and listen to ourselves - not others - about what is right for us. Good luck with your full timing project!
This is why I tell people we need to go back to basics simple living is the way to go people today with all this technology is working too hard looking at killing himself or money to get rich I just stop doing that I work when I feel like it of course I still have to go to work but but unlike the next fool who goes to three jobs I refuse to do that I work at my beckon call and I want to enjoy my life more than spend it working working working..
This vlog is so very poignant for 2020. If this year has taught me and my family anything, it's that we don't 'need' or even want what we thought we did before covid. You're so right that our society was so much on that consumer treadmill. There is so much to be learnt from this year. Such a lovely positive video.
Hi Andrew, I've been waiting a long time to hear someone get down to what is really important about minimalism. Thank you so much for risking revealing the gift your father gave you by being so present to what he truly wanted in his life. Good luck with your search for meaning too. Regards, Rose
+L'Acqua Rosa Thank you Rose, I intend to explore further about some of the good - and not so good - elements of this life over the next few weeks. All the best.
Great to see you living your life the way you want. I am pretty happy with my life at present, but I am renting which I hate. My goal is over the next 4 years to save enough to buy a piece of land further out in the country area than I am already living and building my own simple abode. Building it is part of my dream allowing me to express more of my creativity but into a structure rather than just other wood furniture pieces I make
That sounds like a perfect plan to me, Andrew! I'm also considering similar. Unlike you I have NO experience of building or constructing anything other than stories, films, and images! But I saw a guy near me here build a brilliant shed with brick footings, frame, tiled roof etc, and he did it all off RUclips. How wonderful it would be to build the place you live in, eh? I wish you every success.
Hi Andrew like you my wife and me love the simple things in life like walking the dog ,grandkids,a fire in the back garden (probably frowned on but hey it's a man thing)cooking and chilling with a beer or a glass(bottle)of wine .I do enjoy the vlogs the scenery is fantastic keep it up cheers DJ😀.
I was lucky that I enjoyed my work, but even so, by my mid fifties I'd had enough, so I cut my hours. I reckoned that if I didn't spend any money I wouldn't have to earn it. Now I have a brilliant life on a pension. Thanks for this video. ilona
Well Andrew - Great video & so refreshing - it is just the kind of thing I am hoping to do within the next year :) as they say do it before it's to late
Spot on Andrew, you're so right. I spend much of my time doing a job that I hate so that I can afford to have a break away from it. You've certainly made me think, thank you
Family, (my grown daughters when they can join me ), cup of hot tea and my pug Fiona traveling to beautiful places in my rv, happy to be part of the "secret of life" club!
Things was much better back then it was an easier time you work hard you got rewarded for your hard work today is a different story theme to Garner we can reverse you work more hard to switch jobs yet you still can't afford to buy anything this is why I live out of my van and I've got back I decided rather than work harder I decided to cut back a little more simple with work I can enjoy my life more rather than work hard and not have no life at all...
A big thank you Andrew and Dougal :-) Well done my friend for breaking through and for getting the point over I share so succinctly. I am so very lucky to have just found you on RUclips (thanks algorithm). Also, I am so very lucky, and intelligent enough, to share a similar life style to yourself, be it in my own version of a lovely home on wheels. May you have peaceful thoughts and continue to have a rich, fulfilling life, there truly is nothing like it! Folks don't be scared to do something massively different. Give up following the herd to the next promised land - it never did exist! You will be surprised at how happy it will make you and you will realise how little you actually need. And one of the best parts is that you will start behaving like a normal human being again, and have time to be able to have meaningful conversations with other human beings, just like your ancestors did! Wouldn't that be nice! Yes I know you have a wife and kids to support, just like I do!, but it's just a state of mind you've created for yourself because of indoctrination. As the great Steve Jobs put it - "Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” You can't leave it to the politicians and the powerful to sort out the mess, they never will! They would rather you kept the blinkers on by keeping your nose to the grindstone! Andrew, hopefully we will be able to meet up one of these days to share a cuppa and have a chinwag. BTW right now I'm in the south of England but I am aiming to head to the Highlands when the weather starts playing ball a bit :-) Look after yourself kindred spirit, keep happy and stay away from those imaginary fears. Ian

Revisiting this today, one of my favourite videos about Simple Living. Thanks Andrew x
Watching this brought tears to my eye, so true.

It's all about striking that balance isn't it, between living for today and planning for tomorrow. All the best.
