    Oh Andrew, I just stumbled on this video today and can’t tell you how much strength you have given me through this, as well as the video of your beautiful father, and living life as we want to. I have been doing up my house ready to sell up and buy something tiny and mortgage free as well as a campervan so I can rent out the property whilst I travel Scotland ( and later Europe) in a Campervan . I thought it would take me 18 months two years to sort everything. However yesterday my job was put at risk, and I will take voluntary ( or compulsory) redundancy. I am full of joy and terrified all at the same time. Yesterday walking on an empty beach I was laughing out loud and shouted “I’m free!” At the top my voice into the crashing waves and then came home and panicked as I realised if I did not sell my cottage within six months I couldn’t afford the mortgage after that. What a strange mix of emotions. I won’t miss working 55-60 hours a week, but will miss the lovely people I work with. I am just old enough to start taking my pension, so would be able to live a simple life, I think. You are an amazing inspiration and have calmed my fear. Thank you, thank you. X

      Aww, thank you Jo, and thanks for sharing your story. Congratulations on what you are doing! I took voluntary redundancy a year ago to follow my dreams and while I've never worked as hard in my life, I certainly have no regrets. If you look back on some of my vlogs from January 2017 you'll see the ups and downs I was experiencing similar to you. I'm hoping - if I get time - to make a 'one year on' video soon. All the best.

    I think you are correct in what you are saying re reasons why people will be living that life. As young people will not have a hope in hell of ever owning their own home. Life is about more than working to life, which is the culture in Britain now. Stressed out Britain.

      I consider myself to be somewhat of a minimalist however I totally disagree with your thought that more people are starting to think that way . If anything I would say more people , especially the younger generation are getting even more materialistic than ever before . That's their problem though . It just leaves more room in the great outdoors for the likes of us while they play their video games . Have a great 2017.

    I'm a little behind on my videos from the holiday and just watched this one. Congrats and best wishes on the redundancy. I wouldn't be surprised given your lifestyle and outlook on life if it ends up being a huge positive. We can't wait to continue following your journey from here in the states. Thank you for staying real and telling it like it is.
    Meanwhile taking your responsibility to Dougal so seriously really says a lot about your character. Being a dog owner is a huge joy but should also be a huge responsibility and I'm so glad to see you understand that as well. Dougal is one lucky boy! Best Wishes!

    Happy New Year to you both, and yes, go for it mate you will not regret it. It will open new doors that you haven't yet imagined. I took redundancy/early retirement from a well known UK bank 16 years ago, as for me the danger signs were on the door then. I repaid my mortgage sold up, bought a motorhome and travelled France and Spain on my own until i found 'my' own personal Shangri-la here in the mountains of inland Spain. Am still here but unfortunately the bureaucrats are circling again. Uncertain times ahead indeed. Good luck and remember you are blessed with the only skill you need to survive.....common sense, and a faithful companion...woof

    I agree that minimalism is a growing movement. From RUclips channels, like yours, it's clear that people are choosing experiences over things. I've enjoyed watching your videos, and I look forward to more, as your journey takes a different turn than where you had initially anticipated. I often go back to a saying, "Everything is always happening in perfect time," and I think your recent voluntary severance is an opportunity, and I look forward to what you will make of it. Andrew, I wish you well for the coming year. I love watching your vlogs that include the highs and lows of life. Do not change. Just before Xmas I retired which is exciting but also scary as my life now appears to have no structure. Now, whereas all my life it has been driven by the owning of possessions I find now that it is no longer important and that all I want is the minimum possessions and to enjoy my caravan this coming year. I will be watching your progress with interest and hoping to pick up many more tips on how to manage a simple life.

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  7 лет назад

      Hi Mark, sadly Airstream has pulled out of the UK market citing the exchange rate as making them completely unaffordable. There was talk of a new UK dealer but no luck. Check out Adventure Leisure Vehicles of Tebay for used stock, or Airstream Europe in Germany for new (which you will have to buy in EUR and fetch yourself). Neither will be at the NEC sadly, but I will be, dashing about with a clipboard and an impossible number of motorhomes to judge :@) I bought mine from Airstream & Co which became Adventure Leisure Vehicles when they diversified.

    Good luck for the future Andrew. I know the Airstream is all mod cons, but if the clock could be wound back, do you think you'd enjoy living simply in the old Thomson, with no EHU, hot water etc? All the best!

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  7 лет назад

      +MPSFIRE999 I seriously considered full timing in my Thomson in the early 90s but it was lack of mod cons that prevented me from doing so (and lack of finances/skill to sort it.) I did go fully lpg & EHU free one summer, and getting up for work at 5am instead of 6 to chop kindling and spending an hour heating the water for a shower quickly loses its appeal. I'm trying now to present a 'soft option' somewhere between the miserable rich commuter in their £1m detached house and the nomadic woodland-dweller; kind of the best of both worlds.

    Hi Andrew. Thank you for sharing such inspiring content. I recently went through redundancy myself and haven't looked back. Without a career defining a large part of who you are, I'm sure you'll explore exactly who you are on a much deeper level than ever in the coming months. You're absolutely right about focusing on relationships. As you've discovered, "security" within a corporate job is somewhat of an illusion nowadays. Real security is found in surrounding yourself with like minded people who care about you. Do that and you'll be amazed at the opportunities that present themselves! All the best brother ✌️

      +Anat Katz Anat, I come from Dover which is the opposite end of the U.K, yet as soon as I first went to the Hebrides (aged 39) I felt at HOME for the first time in my life. Once of the reasons I study the Gaelic language and culture and language is to try and make sense of this profound connection but I have no logical answers. So I would suggest that your feeling of home is not as odd as you may think. I hope you make it there some day. All the best.

    I'm going to say congratulations on your redundancy. I know you will make a success of what ever you do. You already have a great base to start from. However I know how scary it can be. About 8 years ago I took voluntary redundancy from a job I was in for 26 years. The last couple of years there I hated it. So you would have thought that would have made my decision easy. In the end it took a friend in America to make my mind up. They said they were fed up of hearing how unhappy I was, and if I didn't take the redundancy they would stop writing to me!!! Just the push I needed. I am now much more relaxed about life. Although I still work, I'm doing something I enjoy, without the pressures I had before. I am sure you are going to enjoy your new adventures, and I'm looking forward to hearing all about them xx

    Hi Andrew. I'm another one who has recently found you and am enjoying your videos. A question for you! You say (imply) here that the life you lead doesn't cost that much. Can you thrash that out a little. As someone who takes off in my campervan whenever I get the chance, I end up paying an average of £15-£18 a night just for me and the dog. 365*£18 is £6.5K before you add in fuel, repairs, depreciation on the car, food......
    That might be cheap by comparison with many places / ways to live, but for someone contemplating a whole new start, without any / steady employment, it's not peanuts. Any thoughts appreciated (here, or in a video!)

      +Peter Hayes Hi Peter, don't panic Mr Manwering! ;@) For a start, I manage to keep my 'sites and lpg/ehu ' bill to about £300/month in the winter and £200 in the summer. I planning videos about living in vans, full timing vs residential, address, affordability etc... Thanks for the tip, and I intend to make a video about it in a week or two. All the best.

    Andrew, my best wishes for the 2017 and beyond, you will be Ok going to your favorite spot.
    I have done a similar thing coming down to Tasmania living simple free of the slavery of consumerism.
    You never know what is out there in the future but I guess that perhaps you will come a more strong promoter of living simple and caring for nature.
    Our kind of life it is responsible, we consume less we care for the future of the planet.

    Good for you! I was having the same discussion only last week with my work colleagues about the way of society and how materialistic people are becoming, but how some want to escape. I, for one, don't follow the 'look at me I have designer everything' crowd and enjoy living simply. Yes, I have a 9-5 job, house and car, but it's a small modest house, modest car and I don't need anything more. I have also started to walk away from the 'social media' side of things and live in the real world and experience real life. Of course I still follow you and that will never change :)
    I believe you have done what will made you happy and now you just need to follow your heart. We only get one shot at life so grab it while you can!

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  7 лет назад

      Absolutely Al! That's why I never present the path I'm following as the 'right' path for everyone. It's just about being mindful as you are being, not a race to have the most stuff or a competition to have the least stuff. It's about NOT being that commuter on the 0652 to Cannon Street and getting home at 9pm every night just to keep the 5 bed house that stays empty all the time and the Merc that does 3,000 miles a year. You know what I mean! Cheers.

      loosing my wife a few years ago, I will keep a lookout for you, I will be travelling up from Kent where I live, anyway enough of my ramblings,

    I'm a Brit, resident in Spain, and the future is VERY uncertain for all us Brits over here. Therefore, in 2017 we will be buying a motorhome. That will become my real home whatever happens. My research will continue at the NEC in Feb. Maybe I will see you there. You are a real inspiration to us and you have given us an appreciation of Scotland and the UK in general. I don't want to leave my home in Spain, but with the motorhome purchase I know I will at least have a home. Happy journeys for 2017 and a glorious job free life. Enjoy!

      +CocoBunjee So pleased to hear you're taking steps to ensure your future happiness and sanity, regardless of what else happens. It would be lovely to be completely self sufficient but we all need other people to some degree - I just think that reducing our dependence on big business and media is a huge step. Good on you, and if you see someone at the NEC sprinting past you in leather pants carrying a clipboard, say hi! :)

    Great video. I was really not looking forward to 2017 because 2016 was such a sh**show, but I got to 2017 and then realized that I could not change all of the crazy things that happened but I could focus on myself and my family (hubby, dog, cat) and work on making our life better. And focusing on myself more is really turning out good. Have a great year and I look forward to seeing what you decide to do, Scotland sounds wonderful.

    Lordy lordy lordy! you ae singing to my tune. unfortunately we may have to get married if you don't stop. ... Bless you, .... breathe, breathe, don't panic I'm joking!
    I have been absolutely STALKING the Internet for info / experiences of ft van living - there's SO much out there .... if you're in the US.
    There has GOT to be a market for info on minimalism/simple living in the UK. and money to be made on RUclips too, but also on other forums the UK customer base is MUCH smaller, so you might need to diversify.
    I think you're on the edge of a great opportunity and i'm excited for you.
    BTW remember the Western Isles do also contain people who are used to the notion of seeking alternatives. Most them are there because they value the difference from the 'more normal' priorities of the rest of ... the world?
    I am optimistic you will find a community there.
    Very best wishes and all the best for 2017 and your exciting leap into the future!

      +Mark Pullinger Well, most of the appliances are generic Dometic and Thetford, so not really. Anything else can be shipped to either Adventure Leisure Vehicles or any specialist Airstream restorer, although you will pay handsomely for it. Flat front window: £300. Curved front window: £1300. I sometimes reflect on what I'd do if mine got written off in an accident, and I think I'd probably still get another Airstream, probably a used 532 or 534.
