Came out at the end of 1969 on Zeppelin's second album, their first was released in early 1969...there are a shit ton of jams on those first two albums, with lots of blues inspired stuff.
It's a cover of a cover, dating back to a 1931 song called "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues" by Skip James. Covered by "Howlin' Jack", back in 1964, and retitled"Killing Floor". Arc Records/Howlin' Jack sued for copywrite infringement, never mentioning Skip James and settled out of court with Zeppelin. . . . . Howlin' Jack received over $45,000 and song credit on the album.
From the second album, circa 69 saw them live when I was 15 in 72 not lng after the. 4h album came out. Big fan at the time, was my first live concert. Robert Johnson also does a version of this, or refers to the lemon, in travelling riverside blues Which zep, also covered.
I love each one of these geniuses, & the amazing GODS Of MUSIC they are, Plant & how he uses his vocals to suit every song they do is so incredible. I really don’t think any singer was or is able to do that, especially with the different genres they perform.
My Zep suggestion: start with the first album track by track and then do the same with each one there after. Alot of great songs, and a few good ones and even the "bad" ones are still better than what most other bands produced on a good day.
Fabulous Nice choice Willie and great reaction Sue I love that you honed in on Led Zeppelin’s secret weapon Jon Paul Jones on bass This track is so heavily based on Howling Wolfs song Killing Floor so much so Howling Wolf is credited as writer , LZ habe been plagued with “ borrowing “ from others without credit given, but everything they touched they truly made their own . 2nd thing you so correctly pointed out the lemon line ( and where title comes from ) as being what rock is all about edgy and sexual That line comes directly from a Robert Johnson blues song from 1937 Robert if you don’t know is the one who legend has it sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads on night in exchange for his guitar ability He was only recorded twice for total of 29 songs . Very little is known about of his life but he died of unknown causes at ….. wait for it ….. age 27
@jessem470 Wow! So much great stuff here, Jesse! I don't know much about any if the guys you mentioned but I will have to investigate. I am learning more and more about their "borrowing" but they seem to take simething and make it even better so good on rhem for that. Robert sounds like a mysterious, magical being. I will look forward to find out about him...another 27 clubber...so much great talent leaving us at the tender age ♥️
It came out in October of (1969), on the Led Zeppelin II album. A great song, but then it’s hard to find one not to like, they all are amazing. Thanks Sue for your reaction, it’s been quite awhile since you’ve done Led Zeppelin.

His wife almost died & Robert crushed his leg & didn’t know if he’d ever walk again. They both had other injuries too, his wife had a skull fracture.
