Realistically, 40% of kids that have been diagnosed with autism of adhd in the last 10 years probably have FASD, but we aren't ready as a society to address that yet. We value our 'drinking culture' over our futures.

It was supposed to be closed after a government Inquiry into the horrific abuse and treatment of children, however it is still not closed despite the deadline being up, nothing has been put in its place as a replacement or any news on what is being done
I have been a youth worker most of my life. I have worked with the worst with positive results. Everytime a kid is exposed to institutions from Foster to Residential Care, Is what I did to Lock up or youth detention, they all acquire learned behaviours. I'm a YW with this challenging kids, I recommend you spend 24 hours with one of them, your reply will not be the same one you posted here, I treat this kids with respect and love, we can save some, some will go out to destroy local community as they feel the world is out to get them, this kids are street smart by way of knowing that they CAN get away with it until they are caught, some will learn and some will laugh until they turn 18 than life hit them harder unfortunately, please note I've been verbally/physically assaulted and NEVER reacts in anger or judge them so that in time this kids will feel safe with me. There's no simple answer but do understand, tough love is needed for some of this kids, my industry budget is cut by way of having a high turn over of staff especially in NSW, what this kids need the most is a face they see in out of home care until they leave, unfortunately politician don't see this, we give up a lot especially emotional and time for this kids, I've been doing this job for 9 years as I see kids some will do well and some not so well which is the worst part of my career, police and victim have it tough too by way of seeing them out on bail until it get worst.

A documentary isn't suggesting solutions, it is documenting what is happening so the public is aware. Then the public may be able to take action and petition their representatives.
I do wish they addressed that but not locking kids in a concrete box would be a start. Decreased time in temporary holding. Clean, approachable individual or dual person rooms - can still have plastic bedding if necessary but humanise them. Prevention (i.e. reduce poverty, improve mental health services, etc). These are just ideas I’m not an expert.

It falls to the cops because certain people kept telling the government that putting these kids/people in facilities was discrimination. So instead they don't get the help they need and only dealt with by the cops once their behaviour goes to far.
They have a similar thing to the box in child/adolescent psych wards, called the timeout room. I was put in there because I was having a reaction to the antidepressant they had recently put me on. I watched a few kids taken to the ground, then dragged by their feet, down the corridor, into timeout. They hadn’t even raised their voices before the incident happened.

I'm 40 & I was held in both youth & adult psychiatric facilities as a teen (beginning at age 13) where I experienced what was described in the above comment, many many times. Stripped naked, held down by multiple men, jabbed in the arse & left to rot in a seclusion cell. No food, water, toilet, window, fresh air or human contact.. for long periods at a time. I wasn't violent. This was punishment for having severe depression/anxiety & sometimes suicidal ideation. I was already a traumatized victim of the system.. a child abused ward of the state from infancy. As far as they were concerned, I was a lost cause. So I was placed in the too hard basket. Treated like an animal. It was a revolving door of trauma, mistreatment & complete lack of any real help. To be honest, it's a miracle that I made it out alive. I knew many who didn't. Not sure how you could possibly think locking kids in solitary confinement is soft. Also when kids have mental disabilities (which statistically most people In the youth justice system do) they can't always tell right from wrong. That's why therapy is better for these kids than jail.

No one will say this is comfortable or that nothing is wrong with this, however, the justice system is not to blame. These children are missing something, education in respect and understanding cause and effect. Their problems start very early in their lives by developing behaviour patterns passed on from their parents and communities they grow up in. You can observe her survival tactics are throwing herself into "victimised" states instinctively and opportunistically. This behaviour pattern is not unique to a minority ,it is abundant within parts of society. Trying to "humanise" the justice system may have merit but will not solve the problems these people face, it will just reduce fears of being reprimanded and and make them more confident to continue living with no respect. People need to focus on the issues that cause these kids to behave in ways that put them into the system.
This is a child who has a trauma in the womb, born with a disability and then exposed to trauma after trauma, not cognitively able to do anything other than try to survive. Each experience triggers another trauma. You have no idea how absolutely devastating it is that there is no place where she can be loved and healed back to some form of health. Humanity, has let her down.
A kid in America I saw hurt his head on purpose and who had autism and died of self inflicted injuries and this is horrific to see in our justice department

Majority of these kids are on streets because home is not safe. Drug affected homes with physical and mental abuse To turn around and say all these kids need is discipline is pure moronic. My son and his cell mate were stripped of blankets pillows for days because the cell mate needed to use the toilet and was yelling to get to the toilet. This was in a watch house. 😮 as a mum. This kills me inside.

The Government removes the public's ability to discipline in escalating the fear of abuse. Abuse happens not in public veiw but behind closed doors. Discipline is not abuse and every child needs that structure to live in society, it doesn't require smacking a child but to stand by the consequences of their actions with accountability.

These kids have done incredibly horrific and violent acts. They are not placed in youth detention centers for no reason. The problem with rehabilitation and giving second, third, fourth or fifth chances has been something that social and biological scientists have been trying to figure out the balance for over 200 years. The kids that are completely out of control due to the horrible things her mother did to her body while pregnant is just tragic. What can anyone do to help her? Medication seems like the only solution.
Unless you’ve worked with disturbed youth you have no idea how even a child can be violent and hurt someone. I’m not saying they should be treated as an adult but law enforcement shouldn’t be solely responsible for these youth . Obviously the grandmother of the 13 year old girl couldn’t manage her. So what should happen? Where I live in California they dismantled many youth programs that worked in favor of saving money, but of course, the state denied it was the reason.
The girl has brain damage from her mother's drinking. That is tragic and criminal. It is not going to change with punishment, learning new behavior, living in safety away from the general public condemnation for being unique. Such a nightmare.
Why aren't indigenous people children exempt from governmental regulations much like in the USA? The FBI works in collaboration with Tribal police & other law enforcement agencies to investigate and enforce laws related to major crimes. The indigenous should be granted these types of agreements and rights. These children are not being helped in these "watch houses".

Decreased time in temporary holding. Clean, approachable individual or dual person rooms - can still have plastic bedding if necessary but humanise them. Prevention (i.e. reduce poverty, improve mental health services, etc). These are just ideas I’m not an expert.
Obviously not what they're doing to these poor bloody kids, if they are risk to themselves, they need counselling, support workers, home visits and discipline that isn't whatever the fuck this torture is. If need be, they have mental health issues etc; psychological evaluations and then be put into care at a facility equiped to properly deal with those issues: Hospitals etc

I watched a few kids taken to the ground, then dragged by their feet, down the corridor, into timeout. They hadn’t even raised their voices before the incident happened.

I'm 40 & I was held in both youth & adult psychiatric facilities as a teen (beginning at age 13) where I experienced what was described in the above comment, many many times. Stripped naked, held down by multiple men, jabbed in the arse & left to rot in a seclusion cell. No food, water, toilet, window, fresh air or human contact.. for long periods at a time.
I wasn't violent. This was punishment for having severe depression/anxiety & sometimes suicidal ideation. I was already a traumatized victim of the system.. a child abused ward of the state from infancy.
As far as they were concerned, I was a lost cause. So I was placed in the too hard basket. Treated like an animal. It was a revolving door of trauma, mistreatment & complete lack of any real help.
To be honest, it's a miracle that I made it out alive. I knew many who didn't.
But the system isn't broken, it was designed this way!

No one will say this is comfortable or that nothing is wrong with this, however, the justice system is not to blame. These children are missing something, education in respect and understanding cause and effect. Their problems start very early in their lives by developing behaviour patterns passed on from their parents and communities they grow up in. You can observe her survival tactics are throwing herself into "victimised" states instinctively and opportunistically. This behaviour pattern is not unique to a minority ,it is abundant within parts of society.
Trying to "humanise" the justice system may have merit but will not solve the problems these people face, it will just reduce fears of being reprimanded and and make them more confident to continue living with no respect.
People need to focus on the issues that cause these kids to behave in ways that put them into the system.

This is a child who has a trauma in the womb, born with a disability and then exposed to trauma after trauma, not cognitively able to do anything other than try to survive. Each experience triggers another trauma. You have no idea how absolutely devastating it is that there is no place where she can be loved and healed back to some form of health. Panic sets in when she realises no talk is coming, nobody will listen, her life & safety is out of her control & nobody around makes her feel safe…
I agree we have a major issue with young crime, but we have to understand it’s not the child’s fault if their Mothers destroyed their bodies & brains before they were born, or if they’ve had horrific trauma…. My son and his cell mate were stripped of blankets pillows for days because the cell mate needed to use the toilet and was yelling to get to the toilet. This was in a watch house. 😮 as a mum. This kills me inside.

The system just makes us teens hate them even more and not want to abide by their laws trust me I’ve been in watchhouse 6 times and juvie once and all it made me want to do is repeat offend until I got actual help from a youth worker. Prison and detention centres only punish they don’t teach you right from wrong, they don’t teach you how to be a normal functioning person, they teach you how to sit and isolate yourself for 23 hours every day, when I got out after serving 6 months I wasn’t used to the normal world and that’s the biggest mistake they are making they should be teaching you how to be a human not treating you like a dog

The Government removes the public's ability to discipline in escalating the fear of abuse. Abuse happens not in public veiw but behind closed doors. Discipline is not abuse and every child needs that structure to live in society, it doesn't require smacking a child but to stand by the consequences of their actions with accountability.

I am shocked and saddened by the comments by others saying it's okay to do this to such YOUNG children. Now I know why these kids are in such distress and pushed to their limit. Nobody cares about them, nor were they ever loved. Neglected all their lives. That's not an excuse. It's a reason. I am outraged and heartbroken. There are other ways to rehabilitate such young kids. These kids have done incredibly horrific and violent acts. They are not placed in youth detention centers for no reason. The problem with rehabilitation and giving second, third, fourth or fifth chances has been something that social and biological scientists have been trying to figure out the balance for over 200 years. The kids that are completely out of control due to the horrible things her mother did to her body while pregnant is just tragic. What can anyone do to help her? Medication seems like the only solution.
Unless you’ve worked with disturbed youth you have no idea how even a child can be violent and hurt someone. I’m not saying they should be treated as an adult but law enforcement shouldn’t be solely responsible for these youth . Obviously the grandmother of the 13 year old girl couldn’t manage her. So what should happen? Where I live in California they dismantled many youth programs that worked in favor of saving money, but of course, the state denied it was the reason.

Why aren't indigenous people children exempt from governmental regulations much like in the USA? The FBI works in collaboration with Tribal police & other law enforcement agencies to investigate and enforce laws related to major crimes. The indigenous should be granted these types of agreements and rights. These children are not being helped in these "watch houses".

As a residential youth worker, I agree with how these kids are dealt with…I’ve seen the same or better yet the worse abuse from young kids do to staff

Even the recent initiative to tackle domestic violence in Australia strangely there is crickets regarding DV amongst the indigenous community which is many many times greater.
