New Zealand's Teenage Offenders and their Journey to Stay out of Juvenile Detention

- In New Zealand’s rural Taranaki region, adolescent boys growing up in poverty often end up turning to crime, some racking up criminal convictions before they hit 16. Most young offenders find themselves locked up-but a lucky few get a chance to avoid juvenile detention by participating in START Taranaki, an early intervention program designed to give them a second lease on life. Through individualized counseling, spending time in the wilderness of the Taranaki bush, and taking a guided transition back to their communities, START works to make sure kids don’t wind up back in court once they leave the program.
VICE tagged along as one group of boys went through START, hearing what got them in trouble, how they handled the intensive program, and if it'll be enough to get them to change their ways.

@@tonymorgan9240 kinda hard when you grow up with that environment, most of these kids have criminal parents or live in poverty, they aren't gonna turn out the same as other children with normal families and normal upbringings, plus not trying to stereotype Polynesians or Maori but I feel like it's normalised within some of us
So true what he said about those companies and the government having a responsibility towards the community and the youth. These kids are the future, they need to be supported.
If you think that companies or government will solve your problems , stop living illusion, start loving people around you they are on your side, just give them a chance, stop doing any drugs, have a clear conciseness, and in few days you will see things around you in the different way. Most important, stay calm, and no fear of any thing

The most relevant “power” is with the parent(s), family, and the individuals. If they won’t take the greatest responsibility for themselves, no legitimate requirement for others to do so.
As a fellow New Zealand guy, you Lads got this! Appreciate and be grateful to those men who have healed their wounds and now want to help other. I've crawled my way out of the trenches. Very slowly but surely. Perseverance and resilience is key. I'm not studying my health and wellbeing cert level 3 to finally properly give back. I battled the low decile living, trauma and drug addiction, mental health and everything else and I'm pulling through finally. Proud of yous, Kia Kaha my boys!!❤

I looked into it, they're all in prison or free with an INSANELY long criminal record. Thank GOD we colonised this country. They're als mostly all using meth with an insane obsession with crime.

This is a good way to rehabilitate teenagers. Opens them up to new perspectives. They are also being treated with unconditional love and have the opportunity to grow up with new potential friends. But there could be other problems. Their behaviour may have been influenced by peers and local environmental conditions have to be factored in.
Also the dude with the tattoos on his face is a legend. What he talks about at 10:32 is actually a psychological problem named 'Prime'. It's when a person is stimulated with certain words that can evoke a corresponding behaviour. Seeing all those tattoos that speak of the system in a negative light will have an influence in ones subconscious mind and ultimately impact their beliefs and ideals. A very basic example: if you've been thinking of a yellow car (words), you will be more prone to see a yellow car (behaviour).

Imagine having someone who understands the land from a Maori perspective, and explaining to the young men when they’re out there that this is how our people lived. I believe that’ll help in some way, some of these young Maori/Pacifica men to understand life, hard work, and their worth, and implementing that into their every day lives.

The corrections department have a similar model where they unite young men with their iwi/tribes in the hopes that they’d learn and understand the old way of life, that they too can become great men of society. Unfortunately it doesn’t change everyone, but the ones who do change, reciprocate their learnings back to the youth. It’s an amazing thing.

I grew up in the nakiz,aucks,ngaruawahia and taupo,yip can't count the schools so many.. respect for this program at least yous are doing something..
I chose the streets it was better than some of the homes,I've lived in.
I've seen and done stupid shit,can so relate to these boys.
I'm a mum of 6 now and love how each and everyone of my children have grown,but I chose to change,you have to truly want to change..love more, show that love, hug, embrace and respect.
Growing up didn't like to be touched,to say I love you was never heard of,I don't need to go on.
But the day I held my 1st child to my last,I knew what love was and it's awesome feeling..

Unfortunately, a kid attending a Start Taranaki camp stabbed and killed a poor old guy when they tried to take his car keys. Poor dude was stabbed to death in his sleeping bag.
I would love to see something of a change in my own home town. Tokoroa! I heard we are one of the worst for teen suicide in the whole country. Im restarting my life and with the support I'll receive from the people I'll meet the support will most definitely be given back. A change is definitely coming and 2021 is the year for it. You guys are doing a great job and your right about farmers owning multiple farms adding to the decreasing number of jobs due to technology and very different farming practices. Farming contractors are whinging about not having overseas migrants coming to NZ because of COVID but they do no institute a program where they actually train NZer's to drive tractors etc its all about sustainability so they say but I don't see them practicing it when it comes to employment.
Watching this makes my heart hurt I am so proud that their are people like S.T.A.R.T Taranaki and many others in NZ need the support and backing from those companies driving businesses from those towns

The sad part is seeing the potential in these young men and knowing some will end up in jail like their dad starting a new generation of disadvantaged kids.

This is a excellent program for our youth, you would only need to employ Maori mentors aswel (if none already) to truly help these young men find hope. Someone they can relate to, and someone who can relate to them. But still an excellent program none the less

I been through the youth court system been in Weymouth,lower north,Kingsley, most of Aucklands boys homes done a outdoor pursuits course change my whole look on life but unfortunately when the course ended I was back in that old environment

Brilliant stuff. An extension I believe we need is to bring them into a knowledge of how to operate in life with business, and operating with people. Bringing them into minimum wage is one thing - we can go further.
That can work, but knowing my Maori brethren and sistren. Itll be too much to grasp when they're at that age.

These kids are a bit wayward, they aren't half as mean or bad as they would like to be - Hopefully they'll pull through. But, is it the system that's prejudice? Maybe, but it's more than that, where's the personal responsibility? One of the kids mums named him after an alcoholic drink, it starts with the family, the system doesn't love, it's a machine. I guess the modern narrative says it's always someone or something else's fault, no one will ever rise up with that belief. The systems greatest prejudice is enslaving people by making them dependent on it.

Admitting your mistakes is the pathway to a full life, here in Aotearoa we truly are a country learning to embrace all cultures and peoples. Maori were here 800 years before ignorant Europeans, they brought prejudice, rats, ferrets, and racism. I'm proud of my Scottish heritage but as a Kiwi Pakeha ashamed it;s taken so long to appreciate the Maori culture,
