New Zealand's Deadly Synthetic Drugs Epidemic

  • Up until 2014, the sale of synthetic cannabis in New Zealand was considered a global test case for legalised drugs. With the introduction of tighter controls the synthetics market has gone underground, and the harm to the community has spiralled. At least 25 people are believed to have died from synthetic drug use in 2017. VICE follows animal lover and former addict Tammara, 20, as she grapples with her recovery from the drug that has dominated her life for six years. We also meet ex-user Trey whose best friend died after smoking synthetics aged just 17. Talking to family members, a former dealer, police, customs officers and an emergency medicine doctor/toxicologist, VICE investigates how and why this drug has become responsible for the deaths of New Zealanders in unprecedented numbers, revealing the raw reality of this under-reported crisis.

    Aussie here. When I was in my late teens this was easily legally available here. Me and my mates just thought it was some sort of legal weed. It is the most intense shit I have ever smoked in my life I cannot believe they let that be legal yet won’t legalise regular old weed

      -Spice / k2 what ever u wanna call it reminds me of Ice because the purity can be anywhere from 20% upward you don't know what you're smoking making it extremely coin flippy you might feel nothing u might drop dead and its cheap.
      I've smoked both and had almost pure crystal and cut its on the same level at least in toxicity even pure ice feels dirty as hell it is basically base with cut ice in crystal form so think of this spice stuff as the same its basically dried cardboard with chemicals sprayed on it and were talking multiple stages of spraying this stuff is going through more coats than a brand new car.

      Real nice indeed. My boyfriend died 6th of june this year. Not from drugs but from alcohol, and I guess starvation, he looked so ill the last weeks. But there was nothing I could do. It was longdistance also so. To lose someone you love, I didn't even wanna stay alive. I got alcoholaddiction aswell, selfharming with razorblades and burn myself with matches, so depressed, diagnosed with bpd. I'm lucky to have good friends and shit to keep me above the surface. But this pain I have, will always be there, until I die. I'm an atheist but I hope I got it wrong, that heaven exists so I can meet him again.

      Real speal, lost both my childhood friends in of a span of a few years. One from the mix of alcohol withdrawal and a combination of light prescription meds that if his body wasnt in shock from stopping alcohol might of handled that combo better and the fake people he was livin with didnt leave him in a position to suffocate, coulda kicked his body over and thatd been better what they did, and second one really got me because i had just reconnected with him after years of lost contact only to have him lie about having a brain injury from a fabricated story and was so just happy no matter his condition just to hear his voice for only trying desperately to meet up in the days following to be met with not much response a harrowing message tat he had passed in his car while sitting at a gas station. I got into it with his mom who God hed be alive if he had my mom but she was cluesless as i came to understand hed been taking research chemicals he passed off to his mom as prescription from a dr. But doesn't take much to understand he had no dr like that and was ordering just weird RCs that mimicked benzos and opiates from china. Crazy thing is he had easy access to regular drugs and chose those maybe because his mom wouldnt recognize those but theres a reason there research chemicals and not fit for human consumption. Kills me because i asked him if he was still struggling because drugs have always been a battle and always will be to a degree for my friends and i, addiction doesn't just come n go. Id given him a bottle of subutex and all the weed in the world and wish i just drove down there and forced to see him. His shame of what he had done to his brain because thats what kills me. Made a whole story about getting in a hit n run that brought me to tears only to find the summer prior he'd taken such a combo of shit he went into a seizure and was never the same. But this is where i guess my mom and his differ my mom would have been on 911 as i was seizing no one followed up in care and she and he probably out of fear of what hed done had gone to a dr about it. The mom lived with him and your son basically goes from normal to like hes got down syndrome and no one follows up. I lost contact with the mom after calling one night extremely high on meth and heroin as i relapsed once after and stupidly called. Really had so many questions but if anything it woulda broke her heart more realizing how disconnected she was to someone supposedly the closest to you and love the most. Shoulda never even called but ya live n learn certainly taught me never to call anyone under the influemce. Im doing well n sober these days but just wish i had a few of my friends that were like brothers still too reminace old time and childhood those ideas n thoughts died with them too. Deaths and shit like that changes you for sure, in fact i really need to go see a therapist between all the death and illness ive dealt with including head games played on me and a definite case of ptsd. Ya, it aint easy movin on

    I was once a k2 addict . It has a withdrawal like any other type of hard drug. After hours of not smoking I would be on the toilet with my face in a bowl throwing up nothing but stomach acid ... I'm a tall girl , 5'10 to be exact and 130 is not how small I should be . I would get hungry but as soon as I hit the blunt my hunger would go away. I lost soooo much weight. It took me a while to be able to hold food down , I could eat 2 fries and be full ... Might just throw them up . I would get very irritated when I didn't have it. Went to rehab when I found out I was prego w my son because I was so chemically dependent and I always had it and whatever I wanted (I sold it) . I would buy $30 meals and eat nothing but smoke $30 of my product EVERYDAY (abt 5-6 grams) . My kids had the best of the best and I was happy because they were happy and I was high so I saw nothing wrong w my living 😢 . All I did was sleep , I would have to clean up really fast because I may get sick while im cleaning and I don't want to smoke while I'm doing anything or I will fall asleep ... Life was hell , no energy for anything . Me and my child's father would physically fight over blunts at bedtime (even tho we had it we were angry because we had to roll another sweet) . 1 hr was the max sleep I got before I woke up to hit it again and go right back to sleep. I thank God for my recovery 💙 I have 2 recovery dates March 12 2017 , relapsed in November . My new recovery date is November 21 2019 and I promise I will never go back down tht road . I did things I would've never done if I wasn't in active addiction . Our God is really great .

He'd get so wasted, it was like he was on heroin. He dropped our daugter from his chest height because he thought he was closer to the ground then what was actually reality, she was 10 months old, luckily we had mattresses all over the floor from my little sisters sleep over. Our marriage ended not long after that. His brother was worse off, he ended up in a psychiatric ward for two weeks because he went into psychosis. This was 10 years ago and he still deals with alot of mental health issues. Thankfully my daugters father has been clean from legals for i think 9 or 10 years, but he is also deealing with alot of mental health isssue, which isnt entirely the legal synthetics fault but it definitely contributed to it.

    Decriminalization of all drugs is the answer
    Why?
    Then you can take all that money that is spent on that "war", educate young people about which drugs are more harmful and hopefully they steer clear. However, turning someone into a criminal for using a certain chemical to feel differently should be just as insane as arresting adrenaline junkies because motorcycles or sky diving is dangerous.

      We have that in some parts of Canada. It doesn’t work. They have decriminalized all drugs in Oregon, US and it’s not working there either. Addicts dropping off all over the place. My husband told me about a bakery that has been in our city for 75 years that is now closing because customers will not risk their well-being to make their way through the droves of addicts that hang around these businesses downtown. I thought decriminalization was going to be the answer too but it isn’t. I don’t know what is, but making it completely legal to use is just increasing the use and making things much more difficult for those who are not addicts and just trying to go about their day.

I'm from Tennessee originally and now live in Auckland New Zealand and hate it. I was mugged at knife point a few weeks ago and the police said they won't do anything because it was less than $800 and there's no point!!!!! It was about $200 but I didn't care amount the money or cards or anything. It was the fact they pulled a knife and robbed me!!!

When I discovered they were selling synthetics at the local dairy that was pretty much the start of a very bad trip. My first experience was horrible totally tripped out very intense hallucinations and altered state of reality but I still became hooked! I was just gobsmacked that this was legal and weed wasn’t. In my opinion synthetics can only be enjoyable once you understand the drug, as long as you can remember your going to come back from wherever you’ve gone too you will be fine lol but great doco vice for reals great seeing my country out there even if it’s for the use of synthetic cannabis lol 😆✊🏻

      @@giveitup0996 it's for various different reasons
      Some are genetically more likely to get addicted, others just need to cope really badly
      Mainly, it's to "fill the void", not feel all that pain for a while
      And then there's also a physical addiction, your body will become dependent on the drug and you will get very sick when not taking it (physically and mentally) so it's very difficult to stop once you're hooked
      It's difficult to explain since it's very complex and everyone's story is different, but just know that no one decides to become addicted and all of them are hurting in one way or another, and shouldn't be shamed, laughed at or anything but instead given alot of empathy
      It's a very very difficult struggle, since once you are addicted it's not only the problem you've already had that you need to sort out and heal from, but also now the addiction that has helped you cope

      Doesn’t work. That experiment is going on now in my country (in a part of my country) and also in Oregon, US. It has failed enormously. I don’t know the answer but making all drugs legal to use is not it. Maybe it’s best for that day, in a certain addicts life, but overall it does not help them find better coping skills or help the people around them whose lives are affected by addicts surrounding the areas and affecting their businesses and their enjoyment of life in general.

    • @documentofchange
      @documentofchange 10 месяцев назад

      @@DaniHMcV I definitely was meaning after we made drastic changes in the U.S. Also no vending to people under 21, etc, structured legalization like alcohol. Tobacco and alcohol are perfectly tucked into their own little category, and they kill their fair share of people. Making drugs legal would also deal with the hardships that come with being charged for a victimless crime. It would also make addiction less of a taboo in society which in turn would mean it would be easier for people to get off drugs because they don't feel bad for doing them in the first place. We should not be making these people felons or criminals of any sort, as someone who has dealt with it first hand I know how hard and expensive both fiscally and mentally it is for someone to go through such an ordeal. So yes I agree we should not go passing legislation without properly putting in proper infrastructure such as education, outreach programs, community programs, better mental health care, etc. BUT once we do, legalization is the only answer because it is and always will be "my body, my choice." I do think that drug users should go through a program of some kind to be able to purchase drugs. This class would be generally informing the user of the risks of using said drugs (we should do that with prescriptions as well), and I also think there should be a limit to how much you can purchase, like with cannabis legislation now. This would drastically reduce the risk of addiction and make addiction decrease in general. There are methadone clinics, so we just expand that to all the other drugs, and we shouldn't have an issue. I would like to hear your reply because I do think this is a constructive conversation.

Why should the government out law ALL alcohol because SOME people can't handle it and get addicted. Why should the rest of us be punished because of the few irresponsible users. I can't stand people like this, who blame EVERYONE and EVERYTHING else before admitting it's their fault. No one put a gun to her head and forced her to take the drugs over and over again. @@sidvicious3789 of course its a global problem. But whats the issue with saying that these drugs are an epidemic in a particular community? same/same. "AN EPIDEMIC is a disease that affects a large number of people within a community, population, or region." - which this is, as well as many other drugs. But of course its a global issue as well, a pandemic. I think you're focusing on a pretty ridiculous point. even if they are just meeting up with "some junkie" (also, lay off the derogatory name calling eh? they're people that need help, and are the product of a shitty government a lot of the time) whats the problem with that? this shit needs to be known.

    • @time2see192
      @time2see192 2 года назад

      You have no clue the part they play at making MILLIONS by infiltrating their own societies with every drug available. The homelessness, the overdoses, the loss of all motivation, the murders and gangs--- it was ALL planned. Even the hippie movement of the 60-s and the introduction of LSD; ALL PLANNED and then executed into effect. So, knowing how many lives have been ruined worldwide, yeah, people have a RIGHT to blame their governments, as well as themselves. But our cultures were sabotaged. Almost every human has been affected by this twisted plot. Certainly the innocent children. And
      I mean in EVERY culture. Dont be so naive. Smh.
