- Ketamine has become the generation-defining drug for young Brits.
A report from November 2020, stated one in 30 young people admitted to taking the drug in the past year - the highest number since records began and far more than other countries in Europe. The latest figures also suggest that ketamine is now the fourth drug of choice for young people behind cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine.
There is a certain cognitive dissonance at the heart of Generation K: On the one hand, we see it as a silly, wonky horse tranquilliser. On the other hand, it is literally a horse tranquilliser... A horse tranquilliser that can make you piss blood.
As it has grown in popularity, so have bladder injuries and addictions. In this report, Matt Shea gets deep into the UK’s Generation K, and finds out how a party drug can go too far.

I believe pot, which I enjoy regularly, is/was a gateway drug bc an illegal market introduces harder drugs more easily. Pot itself isn’t, but when it was illegal and more criminal charges, the chances of trying something else is high

It just takes over your life and priorities. Lived in a house with ketamine addicts. Hearing them screaming and crying as they peed was a horrifying reality. I couldn't believe the amount of pain they were willing to go through to get high.
I've lived in that house and been one of those people. Not cool.
Short term reward wiring at its finest!
Here in the US we have a "drag-kid" named "Desmond is Amazing" who at 12yo bragged on video about snorting K with drag queens. I'm sure that will cause no long-term brain damage at all.
@@RUclips_Enjoyerlol I know the EXACT kid you are talking about. He was also in live streams with the now deceased (thank god) 'club kid murderer" Michael Alig. Imagine leaving your child or even allowing him in the same room with that monster!!?
In the livestream, with Desmond and Michael and one other adult male (no parents visible), was a painted piece of "art" behind them. It was a little kid playing and the word ROHYPNOL in big letters behind the child playing in the art piece. Sick.
@@MonstrousChamp dang. Ya. I'm sure I wasn't the only person to live in a house like that. We went from being total potheads that like psychedelics from time to time And then my roommates/besties decided to become complete kitten (ketamine) addicts. I tried it a couple times. Not my thing. At all. But ya, mornings were hell because the first pee of the day was particularly brutal for them. I'd beg them to stop. They just couldn't. Far as I know (I moved on) they've all got colostomy bags, ones passed away. He injected it and it killed him. The rest are a mess of problems. Sucks. It was the coolest house ever. Coolest people ever. Turntables video games, bbqs all the time. Everyone wanted to come hang. A constant flow of cool people. Then the k happened
And it all went downhill. Once the turntables were pawned for more k.... I knew it was time to move on.
I lost my partner to a K overdose a few years ago. He was an addict and started urinating blood. Shortly after that we met and he decided to be sober and I supported him on that journey. One night he was alone and decided to ball out like he did when he was frequently using like a couple Gs. He was found the next day in a hotel room. Man was sober for over a year only for one night to change it all.
Everyday I think about him and everything he would have been by now. I knew his deepest darkest fears and to see those become a reality breaks my heart everyday. It only took one slip up.
That sounds horrible. We all make mistakes sometimes, sadly it cost him his life. I'm sorry for your loss. All the best to you.

I’m so sorry.
As a medical professional it’s absolutely wild seeing someone insufflate 1000mg of ketamine in one sitting, I mean for someone 165lbs or 74kg were would push anywhere from 100-250mg depending on the person, other medications, etc but for the average 165lbs person a 150mg dose via IV would have you at surgical anesthsia levels 100% and within seconds usually less the 1 minute, so he is doing ten times that and just hanging out!!! But that goes to show you how significant drug tolerance can be, same with opioids. I’ve seen patients that would inject 160mg of OxyContin, that dose could kill several people without a opioid tolerance, however all this aside ketamine is really one of the safest dissociative anesthetics out there, preserves breathing reflex, mild increase in BP an bronchodilation
Not everything they show is real (they host fake chemists and drug users all the time). Also that 1000mg of "ketamine" if it is actually that might only be 49%-60% ketamine
Actually Sernyl (phencyclidine or PCP) was the first dissociative anesthetic and was chemically modified to be shorter acting for use in surgery. It was literally battle tested during the Vietnam war because it could safely anesthetize people in battle conditions.
And for tachyphylaxis or tolerance, methamphetamine causes tolerance amazingly fast, especially smoking it apparently.
Of course the psychedelics fit that description too....I remember that from personal experience. ;*[}
So your telling me that ketamine isn’t often cut

I used to have a ketamine addiction.
I was hanging around a group that could see me getting worse. No one said anything about it until one New Years, I said I need to stop this year. I got laughed at and told I couldn’t do it. After completing the year sober from it I stuck up a middle finger to the group and I’m no longer part of it. I used to get cramps after a few pints or a bump, but now I haven’t touched it in nearly two years

Its like a place u get stuck at, worse than heroin becaude its mental. Good on u for quitting.
There is no such thing as a ketamine addiction. You simply have an addictive personality. It's probably not your sole vice. Ketamine is out of your system quickly, and does not compel you to consume more. So you've managed to abuse a drug that is actually difficult to abuse. Congratulations. PS I know something about this, having been part of the NYC nightclub scene that popularized ketamine in the early 1990s.
Great choice man stay strong
This is sad. I take IV Ketamine medically for CPTSD and Depression with a doctor in Washington State and it honestly has changed my life for the better.
Drugs have the ability to heal people but they can be equally as harmful, especially without medical supervision.
I have experienced a plethora of horrible side effects from many different antidepressants, while on the flip side I receive medical marijuana which helps a ton with my pain, as well with my occasional Ketamine boosters every 9 months, so I know drugs aren’t all just black and white like some say they are, though that also doesn’t mean they can’t just as easily be abused and harmful.
Hopefully one day the worlds governments will learn to focus more on studying, decriminalizing, and regulating substances rather than demonizing anyone who uses them.
Maybe then there wouldn’t be things like “Ket Bladder” and drug cartels wouldn’t be able to distribute products cut with unknown often fatal adulterants all for a quick buck.
It's extremely expensive to get this treatment in the UK as opposed to the cheap price on the street here, typically £30 a gram, most will opt to self medicate and this often becomes abuse sadly, psychedelic therapy's have a long way to go in terms of cultural acceptability and accessibility

My dad was given roughly 100mg of ketamine in total when he was in a motorcycle accident, his recounting of when he felt it enter his system was: “I felt like I was put on a rocket ship and sent into space”
Ive had that on K before, was weird

Same. I was in a wild night club and part of my mind thought I was on an alien rocket ship. I went the restroom, and the flush of the urinals made me think people were flying/flushing out into space. Absolutely nuts.
I love that this humanizes drug users. People on the outside looking in see them as irredeemable, and think they can simply snap out of the habit. But they are people with real issues trying to escape something and remove themselves from reality even if only for a moment.
Thats exactly what they are. The common think I ve seen through the years is that most of them are , children of very rich or very poor people. The rich work all day to get rich and sustain their self image and the poor work all day to survive. The outcome is , less time with kids = drugs.
Rich and "Poor" America does the smack. The Third World farms and dies for it. Blood drugs, blood dollars, blood gold, and blood diamonds.

All of that is completely wrong. Drugs are part of reality, humans have always altered their consciousnes with various drugs. We're not escaping from anything, we're exploring more of the world. Nor is using drugs a "habit". You can habitually use something or you can occasionally use something, just like with any technology.
Trauma is something that is very common in drug addicts. Whatever that may be it is enough to haunt a person and they'll do anything especially drugs to escape that for whatever time the drug may last. I used to shoot heroin and everything else under the sun. I never was able to do k or get wet but it's on my bucket list. Moderation and understanding is very key to recreational drug use
I had no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes . Wow. Eye opening
i know people who died from life long k abuse. its not pretty. their organs slowly just give out. one day you see him his skin is all yellow, next time you saw him hes been diagnosed with liver failure, then next time you see him its in a casket. Once the health issues catch up, death follows fast.
My addiction wasn’t ketamine but I’m glad that videos like this exist to show what can happen to someone when the drugs takeover and you’re no longer in control anymore, but that there is help out there for the people that need it. Works if you work it and I’m currently 2 1/2 months clean and going strong.

The cycle of addiction is one of the most powerfully depressing things. That man (Jack) is so sad, he's completely given up. He knows he's killing himself, but he literally can't do anything about it. Knowing you are beyond saving from a situation you ultimately chose to get yourself into has to be so sad.
he CAN, he just is in 2 deep, but he definitely CAN do something about it
u just believe u can’t when u give up
It's only sad when one fights the choke chain. When one accepts, there's a melancholy relief.
Not everyone has a choice to stop, or recover, or what have you. I had a choice, and I made good use of it. I believe that to do otherwise is to disrespect the sacrifice of those that had no choice. That thought keeps me sober when nothing else works, since 3/22/16.
Everyone can safe themselves and get over any addiction. It's all up to the power of will.

Holy crap, the guy with the two lines 'CK' is just f'd up, in my estimate but then i was a heroin addict for ten years. Got off everything with help from my partner who supported me while i stayed in a hotel room for two months while i kicked my habit; sweats, chills, puking, leg cramps, stomach aches, etc...33 years later STILL clean. Lost my partner 3.5 years ago & miss him terribly for everything he helped me with including work place injuries, etc....Wow, this is a mess, much like fentanyl which didnt exist when i was using heroin, thankfully!
As an older man that has used dope and mushrooms to escape the reality of my terrible childhood trauma I can say, "there is no escape".
Instead it is through mindful practices, "what it is that you focus on" that allows you to make a truly rewarding life.
It's not "what you get from life" but what you give to life that brings the real happiness.
I've realised that judgement of others treatment towards you if other's are cruel or harmful towards you or of the negative narrative of life that is truly destructive to you. When you practice judgement or seek justice it's forms a cruel self judgement that debiltates you.
More self hatred, therefore more self harm.
Drugs actually stop you being able to use "your mind" THE ONLY ONE YOU HAVE from being useful to you.
Unfortunately the world is so bad and people so unfair, cruel, vicious, predatory, and harmful. This is all learned behaviour, we feel like we have to protect ourselves from further harm.
If you start to make a practice of finding the beauty and wonder in the moment I assure you you can become wonderful, beautiful, kind, and happy. Therefore creating in you, and those around you wonderful reality.
John
Edit: I'll add, have a look at abandonment theory, everyone ever knew used drugs and alcohol for escape had this commonality.
I actually believe we all have the issue to some degree. I have, and the work I've done on it has been rewarding.

I heard a story of a guy at an after-party at club in Buenos Aires where a stranger offered him a big line of K in the toilets there, he had it and then two big muscly games came in and tried to grab him, obviously to rape him. I'm glad this was made. I can't stress enough how dangerous ketamine is for the bladder and kidneys. Ketamine is amazing, but is too easy to fall into casual use because it's such a fantastic drug. 10 years of use and you'll be painfully pissing 50 ml at a time. Believe me not worth it.
People know how bad it is, that's why they use it. They know how their lives gonna ends☠️. That's the life they are willing to deal with.
People just need to do their research. Too many people blindly abuse all drugs and this is where the issues come from. I always read up on everything before touching it so I knew what I was getting into.
You will only be able to piss 50ml? So how many times would you be going to the toilet?
Absolutely, what he said^

As a person in recovery for five years i can tell you being clean and sober is much easier than being an active drug user. People aren't created and meant to use drugs and you dont need drugs to feel right. That's part of these people's addictions the drugs make them think they need them to feel right when in reality nobody needs drugs to feel right.
How do you feel right without drugs

Amazing video. Thanks for drawing attention to this vice! I was a ket addict between the ages of 17-18. I vividly remember staying at a friends house on the sofa one evening, and his dad walked into the living room just as I was doing my morning line. He didn’t say anything but I realised that day K had completely warped my perception of what was normal.
I did about 2.5-3g a day and the cramps/bladder symptoms were unbearable. I’m over 3 years clean now from daily use (with a short relapse early this year unfortunately) but I have to express my life has changed immeasurably for the better.
I definitely subscribe to the NA philosophy “once an addict, always an addict”. I know I could never trust myself to touch a drug in moderation again. I’ve quit drinking too for that very reason.
If you’re someone looking for a reason to quit - please take my comment into consideration. When I was an addict I was sick, clinically depressed, suicidal, and barely coping with my job or relationship.
Sober me is successful, works hard, has emotional capacity for when things go wrong, and can tackle struggles head on whilst also having Grace and patience with myself. ❤

That's right. Mind open. Not to do
Yes! I've never been the type to be interested in trying drugs, but I do find these vice documentaries a lot more interesting and impactful than any anti-drug assemblies we had in school. I also like that there's docs like these about drugs many young people consider 'safe' -- when I was in school what they taught us about was mostly weed, super hard drugs like heroin and meth, but not a lot about party drugs. I think that's a big reason why especially uni kids tend to think these are safer, not as addictive or whatever.

Veterinarians have the highest suicide rate (or one of the highest suicide rates) of any professions. It's a strange issue, they don't get paid enough and they are subjected to some of the saddest things every single day. Watching animals come in sick until they're dead a few years later, and the cycle continues. Over and over and over again. And then you see how heartbroken the people are and in worst case scenarios the people probably even blame the vets even though it's truly not their fault most of the time.
Respect for all the vets taking care of our doggos and other pets 🤗🤗🤗

First time I saw someone on ketamine he looked like he was paralysed from the bottom to the top. He couldn't close his mouth and his hands were all twisted. Lasted about 30 minutes, looked like an overdose but he was fine. It is incredibly sad to see people from 15 to around 50? Using this drug. I genuinely enjoy alcohol but I am trying to cut down.
Something that seems to have been glossed over and yet is a key issue: is it the crystals which damage the bladder or can ketamine be prepared so it doesn't cause bladder damage? Either way, I feel like this could be another example of it being the combination of a drug PLUS that drug being illegal which causes considerably more harm
in the same video is mentioned that the mere fact of doing ket damages the bladder. stopping use lets the bladder restore itself
I had a massive drug addiction when I was in University and spiralled to the point of a near-death experience via suicide twice. In my perspective it's a horrible experience, and I lost my flat mate to a ket overdose mixed with alcohol. She was in her closet in the room and a pathologist told us she had supposedly strangled herself trying to reach for more breath. I've been on the sober road since then and graduated couple years back, and I've lost 2 other friends to drug overdoses since. Thank you for showing the addictive perspective of K, I’m so tired of hearing about the benefits constantly and never being warned about the dangers. I don’t like speaking about my addiction but if even one person reads this and decides to listen to my advice it will be worth it. I genuinely never believed I could become addicted to k or that it could harm me, I’ve learned the hard way and 5 years later I don’t know how to get out of the hole. Furthermore the support for k addicts in this country is awful, most doctors don’t understand the damage or addiction potential of the drug meaning I’ve been to hospital before with k cramps and they’ve told me it’s ‘anxiety’. overcome this addiction as I have spent the last few years telling myself that this will be the last bump only to relapse the next day. I’m lucky that I’ve avoided bladder issues until now but I know it’s only a matter of time. For me, the main reason I use k is to treat my mental illness, I feel in part let down by the system which has offered me no support with my personality disorder since I turned 18 except giving me some pills to take. I want to stop but I feel like I can’t because it’s all I have as a safety net against my mental illness, but it’s a self fulfilling prophecy as the k makes me more depressed long term. To anyone using recreationally who has started using alone, using every time they drink, spending more than they can afford on k, getting any type of pain from it or has started building up a huge tolerance where they need more than a g to get high- please stop before you get in too deep. If I’m not able to beat this I at least want to know I helped another other individual choose a better path for themselves. This addiction will cost you jobs, relationships even with family, it will lose you friends and the respect of your peers, it will have you rolling on the bathroom floor in agony and sat on the loo for hours unable to piss. You will start to forget things, you won’t remember whole periods of time, faces, people, you will question reality and your own perception of yourself. You will no longer gain pleasure from anything except the obtaining and using of k and even then you will realize one day the horrible truth that even the k doesn’t help you anymore, and by then its already too late. It’s like the most toxic relationship because you want to get out but you’re trapped and if you have even one moment of weakness you’re back with that person. K was there for me during breakups and deaths and divorces and it felt so safe and good and now it’s the root of my problems. I never have money to spend on nice things for myself I have to spend it all on k, I work so hard just to waste it all on drugs and feel horrible about it. I’m sure a lot of people are reading this thinking just quit then, and I hope that I find that strength, I am truly trying, but it is so tiring living in a brain that is constantly trying to hurt you. Sometimes I just don’t wanna carry on. To anyone suffering with this right now I don’t have the answer but you aren’t alone and if you’re just now starting to build a habit please please put the k down before you end up deep in the k hole. Peace and love x
I'm still struggling with a 10 year k addiction. Thankyou for posting, hope we can both recover ❤
I’m sure your comment will help those who need it. I wish that you find a way out of the suffering 🙏🏻
Much love and I hope you will be able to overcome this. I don't usually comment on videos but you saying that it's tiring to live in a brain that is constantly trying to harm you got me wanting to stress one very important fact that might help you: we are not our brains, we are a mash up between body-brain-soul. If you find a way to control your brain, not the other way, you might be able to sort both your addiction and disorder. Work with your body and soul and the strength will come. I believe in you and I love you.
@@flupifinch8156 Thank you, that is very wise advice and I appreciate your belief in me. I think as a Psychologist I should learn to look outside of what is going on in my brain so your choice of words is very apt. And also very true, I do believe that we all have a soul and I also believe I mine has a lot of determination so I hope one day I can come back to this comment thread with positive news...if not, catch you on the flip side :-)
@@anonymous-wh1it please don't forget to come with the positive news. it will make me very happy to hear that you made it. love you!
I've only had the fortune of trying ketamine a couple times as it's extremely hard to find where I'm from, but man was it an experience and I struggle to find another drug to really compare it to. Easily the king of dissociatives.
Looks like I need to get one of those rubber horse masks and see if I can get "anaesthetized" by a vet... The perfect plan.
Thank you so much for this video. Ive begun experimenting with k a bit and it is quite honestly one of my favorite drugs by far, but with the knowledge ive gained from this video i think im too scared to pick it up as a habit. Thank god for the internet and it's ability to spread drug safety
Look up videos of people describing Bristol bladder and it will demotivate you real fast!
Just do it at partys not when you wake up these dumb arses are hooking themselves with a non adictive drug becouse they want attention believe it or not
It’s still the safest drug around tho. Just don’t let any drug become a habit.
I’m a regular user for 15y and I’m still fine. I never experienced any bladder issues.
Just use it mindfully.
Thank you for learning something positive from the video.
@@karovanhove8378 just don't use it. How would it be a big deal? Just don't use it, simple as that. Do you think that you will be less attractive, less equilibrate or less interesting because you don't do drugs. Quite the opposite. Just don't do it. It's useless. I mean, I can understand teenagers , they want to experiment new things etc...but as an adult no. It's so childish and meaningless.
I’m a urology RN, this is a real thing with urinary bladder damage, so very sad for the patients, they are very sorry they have done this to themselves. Unfortunately it is too late! The bladder is surgically removed and nephrostomy tubes are placed in the sides of your body at the level of the kidneys for you-to excrete the urine. Care of the tubes is complicated and the potential for infections is common!! Anyone doing this please please stop, if not you will regret it!!!
but the high is cool!😂
Stupid is as stupid does🤣
you can take it recreationally just fine, just dont abuse it..
uhh I think I’ll stick with moderation
@iammusic9 nobody was telling you what you can and can't do. Reading comprehension is important.
When i got to IM more then 1cc at a time... i was out of that game the tolerance builds so FAST, its great if you save it for a every other weekend or once a month but a heavy drug...... it does do wonders for people with depression
I was given Ketamine for pain relief after a bad injury. The experience was awful and I can’t fathom how people find using this drug fun or pleasurable.
I really respect that they asked and made sure he wasn't just snorting a gram of ketamine for the camera. Multiple times. Genuine interviewer / cameramen
Thank you, Vice. I need video's like this to remind me why I'm sober. It's not worth trying just because you're curious so don't be fooled thinking it's harmless fun folks.
It is as long as you use it right only at partys not for wake ups like coffee in morning comin sence pleasse
only do weed and shrooms you'll be ok

Tried ket 1 time. The most intense high I've ever had, lost a few hours and tripped balls. I absolutely loved it. Never tried it again for the fear of becoming addicted to the high 😳
Any pissing blood issues? I want to try but got the fear now
I've tried almost any drug except of heroine and I'm glad that I didn't touch ket. I'm sober for 4 years and it's the best thing that happened to me, indeed.
