World's Scariest Drug (Documentary Exclusive)

- VICE went to Colombia to check out a strange and powerful drug called Scopolamine, also known as "The Devil's Breath." It's a substance so intense that it renders a person incapable of exercising free will. The first few days in the country were a harrowing montage of freaked-out dealers and unimaginable horror stories about Scopolamine. After meeting only a few people with firsthand experience, the story took a far darker turn than we ever could have imagined.

Let me get this straight, you said in the intro that a person having all their property stolen from their flat is worse than someone waking up in a bath holding a sign that they have 5 hours to live and get to a hospital ? You my dear friend are why nobody watched Vice anymore. I just seen the tag line and watched 2:15 minutes before I said this POS is such a valley girl that you would never be able to give a true definition of the horrifying results of this experiment.

I do believe that his documentary saved my life. i'm from the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil. In 2018, I had to go to São Paulo for an internship interview, when i got there i went to the metro to get to my destination. At one point an sketchy guy approaches me and start talking about how he is going to propose to his wife and asked me to see the ring he bought her. When he opened the ring case (in front of my face) i immediately started feeling like i was going to pass out and nauseous, it was in less than a second that i remembered this video, stood up, closed my nostrils, covered my mouth and ran away from the guy, i was not chased back, but it was scarry as hell!
that's terrifying. i'm glad u were able to recall this vid and what u learned :(

Damn, that drug dealer reminds me too much of some people I used to know. You have to be careful around them. They may or may not be trustworthy, but they tend to do stupid stuff that gets them and others in trouble. Like, opening up some potentially fatal powder in a car. One sneeze and everyone is screwed.

He reminds me of the dude in "The Fifth Element" who tries to rob Bruce Willis.
I accidentally ingested the Datura flower in Mexico and it was the most traumatic experience of my life. After an emergency psychiatric visit, I slept for 16 hours and woke up a completely different person. It changed my entire outlook on life, thankfully in the best way possible, and this video validated that my experience was real. It gives me the chills to think I could have ended up being stuck in the hell I was in after I ingested it. I am so fucking grateful.
you should look up datura trips on here, there's some really fucked up stories
If you don’t mind, can you describe your experience and how your life changed? How was your mental state before the trip?

As a person who was born and lived in a country near Colombia, I can very much tell you that this is true. People are so used to it that it’s actually weird when something like this doesn’t happen everyday. It is not that people are more brave than people in first world countries, we are, we are very scared, we’re scared to step out of our homes to go around the corner, and even at night you are very scared someone will break in. This is something those people have to accept everyday of their lives, that it could be their last day, that when they go out they might not come back. You never stop fearing it, you just learn to live with it. You eventually forget that it’s not normal to live in a place like that. You pick up habits that help you stay safe that people in first world countries laugh at, but if they only knew. You become so paranoid that even when you live in a first world country you do not feel safe. I have friends here in Canada that leave their doors unlocked, go out at night by themselves, take jogs in dark places, walk around with jewellery and electronics, are never looking around, feel safe getting high or drunk around strangers, are willing to meet random people or go to their places, they don’t check around their homes at night, don’t wake up at the slightest sound, keep a weapon near their bed, have a dog, and aren’t afraid to get into fights with random people, without thinking who that person might be and what weapon they might be carrying. Without doing any of this, I feel very uncomfortable. I am very careful to get into fights with random people the first thing I think about is “what if they take out a knife or a gun and kill me?”
Plot twist: The film crew originally was doing a simple documentary of Colombia but got drugged and force to make a drug documentary instead.
ahaha i see what u did there
British Columbia? Oh you mean Colombia the country.👍
@@leonardoserna8988 Smartass
@ Un-Peteable IT'S Colombia not Columbia, smh
Double plot twist: he drugged the fiend to get him to talk about where he finds all the drugs in Colombia and so he could make this documentary.
When I was younger I was fascinated by the Carlos Castaneda books where he described training under a Yaqui shaman in Mexico. One of their rituals involved using Datura -- they would chew the roots and swallow the juice. Datura (jimson weed) grows wild where I was at the time and is really easy to recognize, so I gave it a go. No idea how the trip differed from using the seeds or flowers, but it was a pretty wild ride. I remember feeling absolutely normal at first, even driving a 4-wheel vehicle out of the desert where I ingested. We stopped when we got to a ranger station, I got out of the jeep, the world turned sideways, and I hit the deck. From then on my memories were sketchy. My friend drove after that, I remember opening the door and feeling like I could step out. At highway speed. My buddy was an EMT and once we got home he decided to take me to the hospital. The primary drug is a stimulant, and my heart rate was over 150. I remember some vivid hallucinations, the floor tile floating, being fascinated by a coat zipper, then total disorientation at finding myself strapped into a bed as the drugs they treated me with started kicking in. It wasn't like being hypnotized, I don't think, more like being in a separate world, with total clarity, and no control. Never again.
That's why witches/herbalists/cunning folk in Medieval Europe and Early Modern times mixed Wolfsbane in many of the magical potions and ointments that contain belladonna, henbane, mandrake and scopolia to counteract/balance-out the ventricular tachycardia (fast heart rate) and hyperthermia (overheating). They also eventually used opium by Early Modern times to, again counteract the fast heart rate but also the dysphoria. Pharmacological cardioversion was essentially invented by witches in the Late Middle Ages, hence the polyherbal concoctions, brews and ointments mentioned in these grimoires and old herbals which characterized witchery. It was really all just about the Nightshades with the other additional herbs just their to "balance-out" the problematic side effects.
Artificial enlightenment like the one Casataneda pushes are a dangerous waste of time.
@@VictorVentriloquista Nightshades aren't for enlightenment. They're all about 'power', not healing or knowledge like say ayahuasca or psilocybin. That said, things like psilocybin could be seen as a kind of cheat code for such things or shortcut more or less and I'm not sure if you're categorizing that with the "artificial enlightenment" here but in the case of psilocybin it absolutely is not dangerous nor a waste of time. I've gone down pretty much all the epistemological rabbit-holes and I can confidently declare that psilocybin is it.
It’s not artificial enlightenment. It’s shamanic tools used by indigenous leaders of the spiritual path for tens of thousands of years that open gateways to spirit and consciousness and cleanse the doors of perception. These cleansed doors of perception cause new neural pathways to open up in the superhighway that connects the mind, soul, and body and jettison the user towards actual enlightenment as you come to learn the power of your own mind and transcend the lessons the universe teaches you.

A variety of Datura grows here in the US, in the four corner states. Had to babysit a friend who was out of her mind after drinking a tea made of the seeds. It was horrifying what she was going thru. She was never quite the same after that experience
What are the four corner states? Jimson weed grows in the southern Appalachian area, where I'm from.
My older sister drilled it into me that you must NEVER leave your drink unattended. If you are in a public space, a bar, a nightclub, ect...you should keep your hand over the top of your drink, to prevent evil rapists from tampering with it. Never drink anything a stranger gives you...trust the bartender, but no one else!
I wouldn't even trust the bartender especially in a foreign country. Someone could bribe him to put something in your drink or even in the glass before he makes it. I only drank from bottles that I saw being opened. If I had to use the bathroom in an unfamiliar bar I put a napkin over the top and brought the bottle with me.
In countries with drugs like this I wouldn’t even trust the bartender
Better still avoid those places completely
Same! When I go pee or anything my drink is in my hand! I will sit on the toilet that drink does not leave my hand. And if it DOES- I pour it out. I totally drilled this in my little sister too! I was drugged in a sprite when I was 12 and if I can teach my little sister anything that will potentially prevent evil people being able to take advantage of her, I will try my best.
In South America can't even trust that
Why would they not include the medical explanation on how the drug works on the brain? What was the point in interviewing an scopolamine expert doctor and not talk about that at all?
Anyone can make a "documentary" and say whatever they want.

I’ve taken Datura 4 times when I was 16 years old. I still had free will, but I did it alone.
The hallucinations were not like a psychedelic. Pure confusion and delirium. Bugs crawling over everything, full conversations with people who would vanish.
At one point I found myself in my living room, Saturday morning, sun shining through the window, folding laundry with my mother. This lasted about an hour.
I came to on my bedroom floor and I was just smashing a shirt on the floor together over and over. I took the datura at 11PM.
The full reality hallucination without knowing it was intense.
It messes up your language center. I was caught and taken to a hospital the first time. My family thought I was on LSD.
They kept asking “Where did you get the acid?” And I meant to say “I didn’t do acid” but instead “the pigeons in the basement” came out of my mouth.
I was fucked up for 24 hours.
Idk why I repeated the experiment but I did. Not enjoyable.

I flipped the hell out. Afterwards, I found out that the hospital security tossed me out in the streets.
My husband told me things I did, that I would never do, if I hadn't been given this drug for random nausea. We couldn't figure out what caused this until my husband noticed behind each ear, a tiny brown round patch. Yea, I'm pointing my finger at you Baptist hospital!!

I have chronic vertigo. I got put on scopolamine patches since it's prescribed for sea sickness, at the time i wasnt informed of any risks or symptoms to look out for, i was so in need of a resolution i didnt think that something bad was possible. Only recently I've realized how much of a zombie and how out of wack my emotions have become. My memory has never been worse. And the withdrawal is the worst part. If you know someone who in thr future would use the patches for more than a few days, do not let them keep using them. Any relief is not worth the withdrawal. The shame of willingly taking a date rape drug and becoming addicted with no high or benefit is not a fate i will wish on anyone.

@Redwoodrebelgirl Not every prostitute is sex trafficked. There are plenty who enjoy it and say it is very lucrative, some very high end making 10,000+ a session. Prostitution isn't wrong if done in a safe environment with two willing participants and condoms enforced. I'm a woman myself and knew someone in prostitution and she said she has great exciting sex with her clients and profits. Women's rights is about having the choice to do what you want. Some women even find it liberating to work for themselves, decide when and if they want to work and with whom. Sex isn't a sacred act for most people. It's the same principal as a massage, paying someone for their time and pleasure.

He probably had underlying scizophrenia or other illnesses already. These things generally doesn't generate mental illnesses, they just bring them up to ones knowledge.
I'd like to think this is a anecdotal case and does not represent the majority of cases of victims/ users who have had this drug. Like others mention, it's different person to person, however, a similar consensus is made, it causes really damage to peoples minds. It is not like any other form of psychoactive drug. 11:40 when he went to the guy 12:04 when he came back into the car
yeah lol
I grew up on the north coast of NSW and my friend had a huge daytura plant in the front yard 😐 yikes!
I've grown that as an annual in my garden the flowers smell amazing I knew it was poisonous but I dident know it was a crazy drug.
I feel bad for that toilet at the end. For the next several hours it had no idea what people were doing to it.
Block Heads Shit happens...
Sad thing is it woke up 3 days later on a park bench with a mouthful of shit & no memory of what happened...
Why. For some time he had a chance to forget he's being shitted on so much
It all makes it way to the oceans... along with all the other toxic crap humans have created. Poor marine life.

Incredible. So scary, but what a fascinating documentary. I wish this drug did not exist.

The dealer's name is Demencia Black. Demencia means dementia, or madness, in Spanish so pretty sure that's not his real name ;-)

there are alot of dealers in Turkey like him :) we call them as "torbaci"

We call it jimsonweed in the USA. Regular has a white trumpet flower, but there are others that have brightly colored flowers sold as a garden ornamental. Both make spikey pods filled with small black seeds similar in size to pepper seeds. As a drug it is super potent. A little of the flower will cause a dream like trip that lasts for hours. The seeds are far stronger and the experience is harsh. You can trip for over 24 hours, actually hallucinate. The body effects include getting too hot, extreme thirst, and light sensitivity. It has a nasty hanngover as well.😮
thats datura, the plant in the video is brugmansia yes, theyre very similar plants and can cause the same effects but brugmansia is more toxic than datura
33:00 rough story, nice ending. It is a particular world, and you have to respond in certain ways. As a warning to others. What other end could they've imagined for themselves doing this like that to people ...
*shows victim giving testimony*
*immediately cut to person fitting exact description of their attacker*
i was creeped out by this lmao
He just said they were black and she happens to be black too? Doesn’t mean it was her. If he said it was white girls and the next clip was a white girl you wouldn’t have said anything. Black people don’t all look the same, Do you realize?
@@rachelenkay9523 no if it were white people I would have the same reaction. Now if it were Latin people I probably wouldn’t say anything. They’re in a Latin country and the B-roll don’t show a whole lot of dark people. Being a “minority” characterizes you from the cultural norm if most people in your region come from a different heritage than you, don’t you realize?
@@trapsarenotgay8228 still doesn’t mean that “ it fits the exact description” or to say “oh she’s black too, it could’ve been her” no, like he gave a very very vague description. i was able to watch it without thinking this at all because i know that even if black people are a minority in a country and someone would say a black person did something it isn’t ground to suspect any black person i see on the street. This is called racial profiling.

+wundz Hahaha I was thinking the same thing, that change in personality was hilarious
+wundz you think?
+wundz Nooooo, he is just a very happy person.
Yeah he took their money, bought coke, and gave them baking soda. The real dealer was the person he met lol... He was just some dude who was slick enough to beat Vice.
+BER2ERKER he was pretty fucking high i'd even say :D
Thank you VICE for all the information :)

This might be the greatest concept ever!
This reminds me of the movie THE SERPENT and the RAINBOW with Bill Pullman made in the 1980's. Very similar from what I remember, only I think it was based in Haiti instead of Colombia. Also, the black prostitute sounds like a heartbeat away from being a serial killer.
I will say that Scopolomine isn't just used by Colombian gangsters..
My friend was addicted to Scopolomine derived pain killers from the NHS.
Omnopov.
Hey! I'd just like to say that it is a terrifying drug it's increadibly effective and some things. the main use I'm aware of is as medicine for motion sickness! as they say dose makes the poison. fentanyl is one of the most commonly used IV painkillers in hospitals(iirc) and yet in recreational use it's killing people daily in the US.
That dealer is insane lol. Gives off a fear and loathing in Las Vegas vibe
Savage Henry?... lol
One seriously dodgy fucker
I was thinking same thing
Lol Hunter S. Thompson more than likely used it to drug people, dude was like that
@saywhatagain! i wonder sometimes how many ive got
“‘I’ll pick this flower and give it to my mom’ but that would be a real bad idea..”
Because that’s what my mom does with all her flowers, boils them and turns them into drinking tea.
Give your mum some datura lmao
Nah just sniffing if can fuck you up good
When you are quoting something with a quote you go “blah blah blah ‘blah blah’ blah”
My mom keeps the flowers untill they rot and start to stink
Or sniff them.
I've dropped acid and taken shrooms a handful of times, and even with that I only like taking a small dose. Just enough to make the world seem brighter and more colourful.
Tripping your ass off isn't fun. It's kind of scary. Datura for me would be an absolute no-no. Same with DMT.

The drug dealer was a genius. Wish he could have found a better path in life...you can tell he's smart (and intuitive).
+Chairman Meow Yeah he was clearly fucked up in the head but he seemed very likable and definitely a smart guy.
He seemed pretty cool
That's what happens all over the world people are born with intelligent brains and are smart but have to sell drugs or kill just to survive so that intelligence is never used. The next Einstein could be cutting coke right now.
+Tomas Colquhoun I know that those 2 VICE guys took some home and with friends around who were straight tried it one by one and made hilarious videos.
+Chairman Meow , Colombia has lots of your people Hook on cocaine Base , they smoke it with tobacco, lace in cigarrets , that base is what fuel the crime and homeless in Colombia , and the PRISON ARE PACK TO THE RIM, AND WATCH OUT FOR THE DOWN DEPARTURE TEN -K SENTENCE REDUCTION , SET YOU UP FOR A MULE AND RAT YOU OUT , SO THAT THERE FAMILY MEMBER CAN GET A DOWN DEPARTURE OF SENTENCE BACK IN THE STATES .

That drug dealer was a fucking delight.
And to the guy saying that karma will bite that girl in the ass, I'm pretty sure it already has. She's miserable. I feel sorry for her.
Also I waited this whole fucking video to see you guys try it and you pussied out. Come on.
Jaylie Piatt why the hell would they try it they said it isn't a recreational drug
Jaylie Piatt I wanted to see the effects too, but it will fuck you up. Still, I am curious about the drug and want to see how it affects one in a safe environment without that person killing themselves.
RedJoker9000 yeah risking permanant brain damage seems like a good idea ... but I wanted to see them try it too

67 cuda... It's obvious that you know nothing about dealing drugs.
67 cuda, I have experience with dealers around the age of the guy in this video. They have very capitalist mindset and don't hurt their customers. Same goes for the guy in video.
Your experience from cold war era is barely relevant to be honest and I could care less about your psychology degree which probably doesn't exist not even mentioning that most RUclips users over the age of 40 use their real names instead of nicknames which just lessens your credibility in my eyes.

the description of this drug reminded me of the powder used by voodoo priest to create what we now called "zombies"
The part no one states in this documentary is these plants are also known as Angel Trumpets - and they are widely sold as pretty ornamentals. My Mom had two she would overwinter in the garage. I have seen them planted in peoples yards in the southeastern US.
Got the goosebumps, when the last victim talked about his revenge. Never fuck with people you don't know. Very good documentary, I've watched this already some years ago.
Those people had it coming to them they murdered his best friend

@@thelovelylucinda Welcome to the world of gang-banging. It’s about inflicting as much harm as possible, that way no one will F with you out of fear of retaliation.
Not that I agree with any of it, but that’s what happens when you F with gangsters. I can guarantee the pimp was tortured to death. It’s a weird place to draw the line at brutal R but not murder and torture.
Can i f- people i know?
@@bloodyacceptit6986 drawing the line at rape, for all sexes, is because it's no longer just about inflicting as much pain and as humanly possible. Rape, or any sex crime, combines all that brutality with humiliation and loss of bodily autonomy. There's a huge cultural aspect as to what rape represents. If he wanted to just kill those 3 people, he would have just done that. But having them be raped (pretty sure they did it to the guy too) is telling them their lives are worthless, that they deserve to be treated less than human. It's not so much that the physical damage is worse than say, having acid poured down your throat, but it's sorta like,, its common for rape victims to wish for death, but no murder victim wishes they'd be raped to make the suffering end. Drawing the line at rape is drawing the line at the ultimate form of human brutality, ya feel

I can't remember what happened but my friend said, I went into my friend's neighbor's house and messed up the whole room sitting like my own house while watching TV, another funny experience when I thought it was fried chicken in a jar of medicine, then I ordered meetballs even though he wasn't a meetball seller.😂😂and there were many more terrible incidents that I experienced, the effects The hallucinations last up to 3 days.
