I only managed to get on my first vaporetto ride on the 4th boat (approximately 40 minutes wait). When I joined the queue in the bus stop I was already inside the shelter! That'll give you an idea of how slowly the queue moves due to limited capacity on the vaporetto. You might want to trade off the Grand Canal view (via vaporetto) for more time via starting the trip by walking first.
