I agree with you about Gordon being bossed around in HL2. The whole game is Alyx telling you to go here, go there... Save my father etc. The desolate, lonely parts of the game are some of my favorite because it feels like Half-Life.
@@jetski8839 it seemed implied to me. People don't often complain about being told what to do by a NPC, at least not in this game era. Why is it a problem with Alyx ?
There is an enormous misunderstanding here. WE don’t want HL3. WE want HL2 Episode 3 TO ACTUALLY FINISH THE STORY OF THE RESISTANCE AND FREEMAN. THAN we can talk about hl3 IF THERE IS A STORY.
I think valve don't really know what to do, they have a few idea's but aren't sure on which way to take. It definitely wont be epistle 3 but the borealis will have to tie in to it. I think we would most likely get another Portal before we get HL3.
Ye Im sure they scrapped at least two to three projects before giving up, the biggest problem being the trap they caged themselves in with HL2 plot and how E2 ended, basicly forcing them to make an episode on the Borealis with Alyx strung along with you
9:22 The Borealis was one of the first concepts created for Half-Life 2. In Marc Laidlaw's very first pass of the game script, Gordon was to ride it at the very beginning of the game to City 17 instead of the tram seen in the final game, it went through several more concepts and even had some unfinished levels in the 2003 beta leak only to become a plotpoint in Episode 2.
To be as concise as possible since the vid was already long i didnt want to specify or talk too much about beta concepts. Also idk I think the tram fits better the city vibes of HL2
If it wasnt for the shock cliffhanger ending of Episode 2 there wouldn't be so much flake directed at Valve. It would be like if after Empire Strikes Back they just decided to never make Return of the Jedi. You make good points about the cohesiveness of HL1 compared to 2 and the lack of a clear direction for the series, but I think there needs to be some step taken rather than none at all. Half Life Alyx definitely got them on the right foot with its tease ending, but if that means if theyll actually or have work on something we don't truly know yet, but they are thinking about it still for sure, it's not wholly abandoned.
Yea, the release of alyx definitely suggests us the EP is not abandoned. But most certainly they will want to implement a new technology in HL3, like the one I mentioned at the end. In a way, im happy Valve always wants to build something new over what the've previously built, but in the emanwhile they could have released "standard" type of games, like Ep. 3 or a new Opposing Force.
I'd imagine we'd get a portal half life, where gorden 'solves' the puzzles without the portal gun, through firepower. and maybe we'd get to play as a xen creature in the past who, being controlled by gorden at the time, tries to get back to black mesa and stop the invasion. I'd also imagine we'd get a turret companion that opens doors for us, but actually reacts to things the player does like we saw from the guy in alyx. and then we'd probably get some platforming, some boat chasing, some aircraft combat, just to pad it out a bit. i think we'd have to go through an aperture facility to get to the plot? the player knows the story of portal but gordon doesn't, so he'll have to get through a condensed version of those two games, he also hasn't been informed about the combine he's actually facing yet either, the player might know they can mess with people's consciousness but gordon doesn't, so I'd imagine he'd be introduced to the concept through aperture and the turret explaining the a.i cores, shortly before activating a device that puts him inside a xen creature from the past. gordens' efforts to save black mesa as a xen creature come to naught as he gets crowbarred by the other HEV suit wearing people and he gets booted back into the present, but now he has a final clue to the plot. and potentially a way to defeat the combine through xen tech discovered at black mesa before the invasion, which can upload a consciousness virus into the combine. thus saving multiple realities, and time lines, from the combine? This of course leads to alyx and the gman interfering before a 'stay tuned for the next episode' appears in front of the credits.
Good points, a mix of aperture science and Borealis wouldnt have been so bad afterall. Perhaps they were scared of mixing lores from different games too much
The same as with most good games, the developers basically took the story too far and expanded the universe too much. As much as I love HL2, I preferred it when the HL universe we knew expanded only to Opposing Force and Blue Shift. It kept things together, in a relatively close setting.
Yep, and lets not forget about the endless possibilities exploring "Alien Worlds" like Xen could have offered to the devs, writers and Valve. HL2 cuts ties woth Xen in a very rough amd abrupt way, which is a shame
@@supertuna123 I was never much of a fan of the whole Combine idea. The aliens in HL1 and expansions felt kind of natural and organic because they were part of a believable world, but the Combine in HL2 were anything from brainwashed humans to high-tech blends of aliens/machines. A cool concept, just not for HL. Like your video explains, HL2 is basically a completely different game but with a few, sometimes lazily implemented, common links such as characters.
Glad we share the same opinions. I have made one old and quite rough video on HL2 Enemies where I criticize some lackluster aspects in HL2 enemy roster, im also not a big fan of the gameplay and I have a more recent video on that
@@supertuna123 Yeah even though HL2 was more advanced in many ways compared to HL1, the console vibes were really beginning to show and some aspects of the game were kind of dumbed-down. A smaller arsenal of weapons, lower ammo counts, less enemy variation, and more story-driven gameplay. The most impressive thing about HL2 was really the engine, but the game itself didn't have nearly as much attention to detail as HL1. Hell, Valve didn't even bother to model Gordon in third-person. Of course, not at all helped by the leak which made Valve decide to scrap the entire game and start again from scratch.
Wasn't the Borealis originally a scrapped concept from HL2's earlier versions? Also, I personally consider Portal 2's ending to be the true end to the series. The reason why the announcer goes "9-" and all that is because ultimately, not just the Black Mesa, but the entirety of the events of HALF-LIFE were just transient and both the combines and the overall human civilization either went somewhere else or disappeared entirely in some sort of a confrontation while Aperture's focus on tests made puzzles eternal. You are right that HL2 and onwards give you less control and freedom than HL1, though.
Apparently the Borealis level should have featured as one of HL2 last levels, perhaps they had a prototype of the map ready and thus directed E2 plot towards the Borealis to make a sequel? I confess I never played Portal 2, i like to shoot in my games but I must play it, nice insight by your part though
Imo valve needs to not focus so much on making the game the most technical ground breaking game with never before scene technology like with half life 1 and 2. Since they waited so long without making games that’s gonna be hard to do , and VR has been out for a while. They need to just make a good game and *focus on the story* and game mechanics and making it overall fun with lots of content , that’s all that matters .
If I recall the ending of half life alyx it shows you a POV of Gordon with Eli who is Alice instead of dead so most likely there will be a half life 3 or portal 3 or something to bring all together with Gordon chell all characters from every game we just don't no how it would play how honestly either be VR fully like shown in the ending or Flat screen but would be still a epic story
I like your video. I agree with some things, while i disagree with others. Half-Life 2 is a game that focuses more on character development and some other aspects, but that doesn't mean that its impossible to steer the story of the third game more toward the roots. I don't think that the Half-Life story is the main strength of the game. The game is abstract enough that it can be expanded in any direction. The main problem is, and i think you briefly mentioned this, is the technology with which to play the next game, or in other words, the lack of it. Half-Life should be looked at more as an innovation than simply a video game. Its tough to figure out the most cohesive and creative approach to create a new spectacle that will remain timeless. Its like a burden for some modern artists to create something as good as Mona Lisa. So in conclusion, i wouldn't worry about the story that much. As soon as we get some new groundbreaking gaming technology, expect Half-Life 3 to release. When will that be, is another matter.
Yea, its like Valve was not content with making another game that plays similaarly to HL2 so they have been wating for new technologies, and with VR we got Alyx and I bet that they are looking for new ways to innovate for hl3. It sort of feels like that, just ran out of steam.......But yeah, I can see that being a reason for not continuing on the series so much, lack of ideas and ways to take the story. Bit of a shame really, by the end of it there's a feeling of "Is it over yet?" which it feels like the devs felt that too.
