Having the ground floor be floor zero rather than floor one makes infinitely more sense if a building has basement levels. In the US, it’s “basement 1” “basement 2”, maybe - but you can just do -1, -2, etc if the ground floor is floor 0. If ground floor is floor 1, you can’t use numbers to describe below ground floors nearly as easily.

Honestly massive respect for not watching the Tate video. People think they’re doing good by clowning and debating him but all they’re really doing is giving him more publicity and exposing more vulnerable people to his rhetoric
Either way people are going to talk about Tate, its better to goof on him/talk about how shitty he is, than let him go unchallenged like Adin Ross did in front of 250k live viewers.
dumb take and objectively wrong. in the case of adin ross, yeah sure. but the train has long left the station, the dude has gained 2 million followers in such a short time before being debated by hasan, for example. and hasan dunked on him pretty hard. dont generalise.

I love how passionate he is about how floors should work. Also, I'm Canadian and I've heard people call it the first floor, the ground floor, and the main floor. But never heard anybody call the floor above it the first floor.
Yeah, I feel like first floor, ground floor, and main floor are definitely interchangeable terms but it’s so wrong to call the floor above it the first floor
Its like in hotels I call the lobby the main floor and above it the second floor, in homes I call it the first floor and second floor, and for stuff with under ground parking lots I call that the ground floor and the building above it the main floor
I fully agree with Danny about floors lol. I'm Canadian and we say it the same as Americans. Ground floor is a floor. The "zero'th floor" point is a good way to explain our reasoning lol
I disagree, the ground floor isn’t elevated so it shouldn’t be counted as first. The ground floor exists as part of earths surface whether the building is there or not so it’s a starting level just like the number 0. Plus it becomes another issue when you have underground parking/floors because if the ground floor is the first floor would the basement be 0? No it would be -1 making more sense to have a ground floor than first floor.
I'm English and never really realised this was a thing. In hotels and stuff then yeah there is usually a ground floor as artdeco said with there being underground levels and stuff it can make sense. But outside of that if you where in someone's house and they said 'its up on the first floor' you'd be like 'what are you on about this is the first floor' so can certainly understand the outrage lol
(I’m super late to this conversation, but-) both make sense to me honestly. The use of ground floor (or 0 floor) then first floor makes sense especially for like a hotel (where this would commonly be used cause you wouldn’t really talk about your house like that) because the ground floor is reception and stuff but the rooms people stay in don’t actually start until the next floor, making THAT the first floor. Does that make sense?

@@ZackC that’s so spot on, they have opposite red herring aesthetics/video styles that would lead you to believe otherwise, but jenny is on the unhinged end of the Niche Deep Dive video scale, and izzzy is on the normal and educational end of it
i dont have an issue with calling the first floor the "ground floor" because that still makes sense, however, the floor immediately above the ground floor is the second floor. it is the second floor you go to, calling it the first floor makes no sense when you were just on a floor.
fr in canada it's like that where the floors will be labeled like lobby, second floor, etc. (im talking about apartments btw cuz ive never lived in a house before)
Gotta respect Danny. Most people would have definitely responded to Tate. For the exact reasons he said he would not. A man of character to be sure. And honestly him not responding is a bigger burn than anything he could’ve said. Just well played all around.
When I went to Vidcon with my dad, we met Danny. He beat my father with a pipe and kept repeating “bad cable management” but other than that 10/10 would meet again
For real. Like I feel like it’s a big deal when someone lived in another country for a part of their childhood. It seems so weird that he’s never mentioned it before and then he just dropped it casually like that. I need more info! Why did his family move to England? Why were they only there for two years? I need to know.
To make the floor thing more logical: in Germany we call it „Erdgeschoss“ which means earth- floor and the first floor we would call „erstes Obergeschoss“ meaning first upper floor. I think that makes a bit more sense, but also „Geschoss“ can also be translated as „something you shoot“ so idk what’s up with that.
“Danny is not real” is particularly funny to me because of that time I was watching a video of his on tv and my mom was convinced he was a 3d animation.
I just want to clarify that when I said she was convinced it isn’t an understatement. She asked how I “know” he is in fact real and all I could think to say is “he’s married..” which doesn’t mean anything.
Honestly the axis thing is pretty easy Danny. Chad Chad is the standard (as you can see on the chart) and then you consider "is this person goofier than Chad Chad? Are they crazier than her?" And based on those things, they are placed on the chart. All things are in relation to Chad Chad. Chad Chad is the answer.
dude I'm not even American (I'm Asian), but grammatically speaking, Danny is right: isn't calling something a floor AND the ground kinda redundant/contradictory (or both)?¿ Plus, the "ground floor" IS still a floor.
I think when the term ground floor was started there was like 2 entrances to a building and the ground floor was technically below ground as the first floor had a main entrance
he understands the concept its the fact the concept isnt applicable to this situation because the ground floor still exists as a floor and is therefore the first lmfao

I’m Aussie, and while we do a lot of stuff y the same as the Brits and disagree with a lot of Americans pronounciations and such, I completely agree with you Danny on the floor subject. Also floor doesn’t sound like a word anymore lol
The thing I don’t get is what the Americans call bellow G (or their first floor) Like, we (I’m South African) go -2,-1,0(or G), 1, 2 etc. so the 1 isn’t referencing the first floor as in the first one you see, but the first point of elevation. The -1 indicated the loss of rise. Zero equals no elevation and no loss of rise. It’s just… maths. It’s like Harry Potter and the philosophers stone having to be changed to sorcery for Americans. There is an in-ate assumption of stupidity that can’t be true for ALL Americans. I suppose I get it if you’re just counting floors. Maybe I’m being harsh. I did once wander around a building for like half an hour looking for third floor because I also thought the first floor was the ground floor. 😂
@@kmhkennedy We just call it the Basement, or B on an elevator. Generally there's not too often anything lower than B so I couldn't even tell you haha.
I’m from NZ so it’s the same situation here. And while I think the American way of things is often wrong, I did always think that their floor system makes more sense. But then I read a comment before yours that talked about basements and I had never thought about basements before because they’re not really a thing here but when you think about basements, calling it the ground floor does make more sense.
One time I met Danny and I told him that I love his videos and that he was really funny. I was jokingly changing his name up like hey, "D-Go", "Danny Boy", "Wham, bam, thank you, Dan". Then he gets all pissed at me, telling me not to call him any of those because his name is Drew. Like, what even, right?
I was trying to conceptualize this, and then realized we reverse this logic for school grades: Americans have kindergarten then first grade, while Brits have year one then year two

@@gabeminson No. No it doesn’t and I’m gonna get really technical here. If u look at a graph with a y axis and an x axis. Now on every graph the x axis is placed at 0 on the y axis and u start form there. A building is the same u start on y=0 and as u head up u go to y=1 and as u go down u go to y=-1.
Ground floor is floor zero so that the basement floor can be floor -1. But in American first floor is floor 1 and basement is -1 they miss the zero. America is wrong.
I think the floor thing makes more sense when you think about how a lot of tall buildings are structured, with the bottom floor being used as a reception or whatever, while the other floors will be more the usual functionality of a building. For example, not having hotel rooms on the bottom floor, hence the floor up from that being the 'first floor ' that actually gets used as hotel rooms. Even as a Brit though, I don't think about that for regular houses. I'd still refer to the second level of a normal house as the second floor without thinking lol
@@lonepinata the basement of some buildings I’ve seen are labeled “G” in elevators, especially if they also open to the outside somewhere because it’s built on a hill or whatever
We call the first floor "the ground floor" in Australia, and I 100% agree with Danny about this. I'm recovering from an ankle injury and when I was finally able to drive myself to the hospital, which has multi-level car parking, I thought of the different floors as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, so I would get tripped up when coming back to my car and believing I was on the 2nd floor when I was "actually" on the 1st floor.
But numbers start at 0, not 1. If it's multi-level parking and there were basement levels then it makes more sense to orient them around a ground floor, because then you have -2, -1, 0, 1, 2. If the ground floor is the 'first floor', then 0.5 of a floor is somehow under ground - it's nonsensical. There's a reason only America does it this way, and it's because they're wrong.
@@nothankyou This carpark had no basement levels, and I'm not sure what you mean by the ground floor being half underground, the one at my hospital at least is not half underground. The way the US does it makes sense because when something comes first you don't call it "the zero-th" or number 0, you call it the first or number 1.
@@nothankyou when have you ever started counting things from zero though? If you were trying to figure out how many apples you have, would you start from 0? No. That is stupid. And you would get the wrong number. When you are counting items (e.g. floors) you start from one.
In France we don't call them simply floor, "étage" means an elevated floor. So in french it does make sense. But I agree that it is odd in other languages.
i wonder if this is one of those weird things where france was like "hey we own you so speak french" and england was like "no" but the rich english people were like "ok but only un peut" then english like half adopted to french and ceased to make any sense
@@crazycadet133 The natural numbers are the positive integers. We count from zero so we can use negative numbers to label subterranean floors. Since that would be obvious. Natural numbers are the first numbers back when civilisations were quite primitive. We now have rational, irrational, negative, natural, integers, imaginary, complex, transcendental and many more. Modern civilisations make use of all of them. It strikes me as odd to claim supremacy when the society you live in fails to do that at a rather simple level. I did make a typo so that may have been the source of your confusion. My mistake. I have corrected it so it should be more clear now.
Idk, in Italy you also say "ground floor" because it just makes sense. The first floor is the first because it's elevated. The ground floor is well lol on the ground.
I'm also on Danny's side about the floor thing. The ground itself is the 0. The first floor is the first above-ground floor, and the basement is the first below-ground floor. The second floor is the second floor above-ground, and the subbasement is the second floor below-ground.
About ground/first floor: here in Germany we start with counting the floors like the brits, but we say „Erdgeschoss“ (ground floor) because it’s the same level as the ground but then we call it „erste Etage“ (first level) „Etage“ meaning that it’s higher than the ground. tbh I thought it was kinda confusing as a child but now it does make sense to me. In elevators this is especially useful. Most of the time you have a lobby on the „Erdgeschoss“ and then the other levels there are the things you need to go to. So here in Germany you usually also have one or more „Untergeschosse“ (underground level) so for example an elevator would go from -1 to 0 to 1 to 2 and so on. so the ground level would be called zero which makes it easier to name the other levels idk if this is understandable but that’s how it works in Germany and I think in other European countries as well
I second this for Dutch. We have ‘begaande grond’ (ground floor) then ‘eerste etage’ (first level) and so on. Definitely believe this makes to most sense out of all of them.
I had been thinking that yeah, the European way absolutely makes more sense, because any basement levels would count as -1, -2 etc, therefore the Ground Floor (or equivalent) has to be 0 to make sense!
I love how danny stayed up all night to edit a video because sponsorships have deadlines, only to end up getting rid of the sponsorship in the end when everyone told him it was shady. Love that

Everything America does differently to the rest of the world I disagree with. However, I completely agree with the floor thing. By calling it a ground floor and it being the first one, it is the first floor.
At least where I live, the ground floor IS the first floor (so from bottom to top in a building it would be first/ground, then second, third, etc) so I was just really confused that some countries would count the bottom-most floor as the ground floor but not the first floor as well
Everyone else. Americans 4th floor 4. 5th floor 3rd floor. 3. 4th floor 2nd floor. 2. 3rd floor 1st floor. 1. 2nd floor Ground floor. 0. 1st floor Sub-basement 1 -1. Sub-base 1 Sub-base 2. -2. Sub-base 2 Sub-base 3. -3. Sub-base 3 American by the way and how do you go from -1 to 1? How are you gonna call the ground floor the ground floor/main floor/lobby in elevators and then start counting at two?
I know what people mean when they say america in this (most) context. Except America would be 2 continents. North America includes Mexico and Canada [among others], and they don't deserve to be lumped in with us in the states. They're better than that. Same goes for Central America and South America. Anyone in the americas outside of the US feel the same or is it just me? It's not a huge deal, and again I know what most people mean by saying America without any signifiers. I also think it gives us way too much control and agency of these other countries that the US has continued to fuck over. just my opinion and it's just a little like, brain itch or something.
Separately, most people I know here would happily switch to metric. I mean we use it mixed with imperial measurements anyway, like when cooking or baking, or chemistry and drugs. It makes things more confusing, and we're the only country doing it, plus metric is easier to understand imho.
This one confused me a bit. Izzy doesn’t do skits or anything that would put them on the “completely crazy” section. It’s probably just her make up that makes her look “crazy”, since a lot of their content is narrative without their personal opinion. I dunno what do y’all think?
The whole first floor vs ground floor thing is kinda funny to me bc where i live in america (super mountainous/hilly region), we still often use ground floor because almost every building is built on a slope, so there are entrances on different levels (for example, the nuclear engineering building on my campus has a ground floor entrance and a floor one entrance, both of which are at ground level when you enter. i dont think this applies to buildings with drastic differences though, like the building with a ground-level entrance on the fourth floor, but i never go to the lowest floor so idk). Hadn't even considered that's kinda abnormal!
The floor rant literally made my brain mute every word except “floor” and made me think about how when you repeat a word a whole bunch of times it losses it’s meaning lol
Lol it makes my brain giggle when I have like a mini out of body experience and realize I’m just saying gibberish and as people were giving meaning to these words.
As a french person, i think the ground floor (ou le rez de chaussée) is called that way because most appartments/houses/hotels didn't have any rooms on the ground floor.
The floor thing is one of the things that Americans actually do right, imo. Me saying that as an European and being generally confused about the floors of buildings during my childhood.
I just wanted to say that it finally happened. I had a dream and Danny was in it! He wasn't a sleep paralysis demon, he was more of a background character for a few minutes, but nonetheless he was there! That devious dream invading Danny!
I met Danny onetime when I was walking down the street with a stuffed rat in my chest pocket, Danny leapt from the darkness of a neighbouring alley and demanded that I hand over the rat. Upon explaining that the rat was fake he became extremely angry and outwardly aggressive, even going so far as to rip the rat to shreds and use its cottony remains as a ritual of sorts before tackling onlooking bystander, knocking their lights out and descending back into the abyss from which he came (Really friendly dude, 10/10 would recommend)
10:25 hope that dude sees this, I'm an experienced rat owner and I'd just like to make sure you know that you should get 2sqf cage size per rat and for female rats get 3 or more and males get 2 or more and to keep genders separate. Theres also very special diets for rats
yeah that's what i was thinking. i actually have mice, not rats, but i did research rats as well to see which one would be better for me. i hope that person sees ur comment and doesn't just get one rat, i'd feel so bad for the poor rat!
why do you call the floor above the floor you first enter the first floor when it is the floor you enter second after the floor you first enter (ground floor)
As I replied down below: Little does Danny know that houses in medieval times tended to have dirt "ground floors" where they would store things. The living area, the first floor (and so on), was where you would sleep. Uncultured part 2?
His point still stands though that calling it the "ground floor" acknowledges that it's a floor, and as a floor, it's the first floor. He never said that a "floor" is where you live or sleep.
3:08 Yeah, pretty much. What Americans call the "first floor" and Brits call the "ground floor" is simply NOT considered a floor in other languages. Outside of the English speaking world there is a separate term for ground level than for suspended levels, and the floors start above the ground level. For example, in German the ground level is called the Erdgeschoss, while levels above it are called Stocks. Or how the french call the ground level "le rez-de-chaussée" and call floors "étages".
Semantic satiation is a psychological phenomenon in which repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning for the listener, who then perceives the speech as repeated meaningless sounds. Extended inspection or analysis in place of repetition also produces the same effect.
4:14 "everyone else" is not including people that don't speak english as a first language tho. I can't talk about other languages, but in every country that speaks Spanish, as far as i know, we don't have a ground floor at all, we start with the 1st floor.
Oddly enough Danny was in my dream last night. He caught a ride home with me, then we planned a pool party with a bunch of people, but had to build the pool, hid jn the basement during a tornado, and at one point Danny sprayed window cleaner into my left eye. It's 0-indexing vs. 1-indexing. 0-indexing is honestly infinitely better if you're used to it, but everyone except people working with old-school programming languages are so used to 1-indexing, they don't even realize 0-indexing is an option.

I love how passionate he is about how floors should work. Also, I'm Canadian and I've heard people call it the first floor, the ground floor, and the main floor. But never heard anybody call the floor above it the first floor.
Yeah, I feel like first floor, ground floor, and main floor are definitely interchangeable terms but it’s so wrong to call the floor above it the first floor
nah first floor
that's the upper one
what're you 5
You would only call in the first floor if there's at least 3 stories. If there's no floor higher, its just "upstairs".
in a lot of the elevators here it’s just an L for lobby
Its like in hotels I call the lobby the main floor and above it the second floor, in homes I call it the first floor and second floor, and for stuff with under ground parking lots I call that the ground floor and the building above it the main floor
wholeheartedly agree with the "S'more Danny" idea. That is genius.
How is that genius?
@@antonizajkowski9698 How is it not?
@@artdeco777no basement is B1 and lower levels the number grows it makes more sense
Like, we (I’m South African) go -2,-1,0(or G), 1, 2 etc. so the 1 isn’t referencing the first floor as in the first one you see, but the first point of elevation. The -1 indicated the loss of rise.

I live in Australia and I’ve never experienced this? In hotels, sure, but that’s just like; ‘Lobby’ and then ‘1’, but never in any other context
@@nothankyou This carpark had no basement levels, and I'm not sure what you mean by the ground floor being half underground, the one at my hospital at least is not half underground.

I got chills of horror... I've never felt so uncomfortable in my life but yeah second one was definitely better
Danny pronouncing the /z/ in rez lol
Everything America does differently to the rest of the world I disagree with. However, I completely agree with the floor thing. By calling it a ground floor and it being the first one, it is the first floor.
At least where I live, the ground floor IS the first floor (so from bottom to top in a building it would be first/ground, then second, third, etc) so I was just really confused that some countries would count the bottom-most floor as the ground floor but not the first floor as well
Everyone else. Americans
4th floor 4. 5th floor
3rd floor. 3. 4th floor
2nd floor. 2. 3rd floor
1st floor. 1. 2nd floor
Ground floor. 0. 1st floor
Sub-basement 1 -1. Sub-base 1
Sub-base 2. -2. Sub-base 2
Sub-base 3. -3. Sub-base 3
American by the way and how do you go from -1 to 1?
@@kittygoesWOOF I think there are more significant issues with America than the fact that it’s called America
Separately, most people I know here would happily switch to metric. I mean we use it mixed with imperial measurements anyway, like when cooking or baking, or chemistry and drugs. It makes things more confusing, and we're the only country doing it, plus metric is easier to understand imho.
5:06 Izzy being “completely crazy goofy” is amazing
I need them to collab
This one confused me a bit. Izzy doesn’t do skits or anything that would put them on the “completely crazy” section.
It’s probably just her make up that makes her look “crazy”, since a lot of their content is narrative without their personal opinion. I dunno what do y’all think?
@@EternallyEden I thought it was referring to the type of content they make, its some pretty niche and weird stuff to know about

The irony of Blair being on the "objective and normal" side of the scale...oh boy that did not age well
The whole first floor vs ground floor thing is kinda funny to me bc where i live in america (super mountainous/hilly region), we still often use ground floor because almost every building is built on a slope, so there are entrances on different levels (for example, the nuclear engineering building on my campus has a ground floor entrance and a floor one entrance, both of which are at ground level when you enter. i dont think this applies to buildings with drastic differences though, like the building with a ground-level entrance on the fourth floor, but i never go to the lowest floor so idk). Hadn't even considered that's kinda abnormal!
It's one thing to have hair as cool as Danny's. It's another thing to have genuine grey streaks. Coolest hair of all-time.
of all the pictures they couldve chosen for me on the normal -> crazy chart cmon now who did that
4:41 Danny don’t just ignore my post at the bottom of the screen there we need to talk about your serious problem and addiction
lmaoooo he’s avoiding it
Holy shit, thank you for pointing it out, I literally laughed outloud
Ted as “objective” and “completely crazy” lends a lot of legitimacy to the graph
I sincerely hope that this video is responsible for Conner finally getting the pet rat he deserves. 🐀❤️ We’re rooting for ya, buddy
Can confirm this video did in fact get me rats, their names are Greg, Gray, and Guy. I'll post photos of them on the subreddit this week!

The floor rant literally made my brain mute every word except “floor” and made me think about how when you repeat a word a whole bunch of times it losses it’s meaning lol
Right!! The word "floor" doesn't sound like a word anymore
Lol it makes my brain giggle when I have like a mini out of body experience and realize I’m just saying gibberish and as people were giving meaning to these words.
5:50, turns out illuminaughti is completely insane
As a french person, i think the ground floor (ou le rez de chaussée) is called that way because most appartments/houses/hotels didn't have any rooms on the ground floor.

the "k who's the AI here" joke at 12:25 was golden
The floor thing is one of the things that Americans actually do right, imo. Me saying that as an European and being generally confused about the floors of buildings during my childhood.
"floor" just sounds like noises to me now, he said it so much
As a proud Canadian, I won hundred percent agree with you on the floor thing

I just wanted to say that it finally happened. I had a dream and Danny was in it! He wasn't a sleep paralysis demon, he was more of a background character for a few minutes, but nonetheless he was there! That devious dream invading Danny!
whats up wih everyone else dreaming of Danny just,,, being there lmao it happened to me as well. dont you think he wished for this to happen lol
Seeing illuminaughtii after everything is like a slap to the face
Edit: rewatching this was like being tar-feathered when I got to that part
10:25 hope that dude sees this, I'm an experienced rat owner and I'd just like to make sure you know that you should get 2sqf cage size per rat and for female rats get 3 or more and males get 2 or more and to keep genders separate. Theres also very special diets for rats
yeah that's what i was thinking. i actually have mice, not rats, but i did research rats as well to see which one would be better for me. i hope that person sees ur comment and doesn't just get one rat, i'd feel so bad for the poor rat!

Danny gesturing at his floor all flustered really got me. I don’t care if we’re the only ones who call it the first floor, we’re still right 😤
You are not the only ones calling it that. There are a lot more places in the world outside of the USA and England
why do you call the floor above the floor you first enter the first floor when it is the floor you enter second after the floor you first enter (ground floor)
it's Ground Floor. It is.
@@RicardoMoralesMassin exactly
@@RicardoMoralesMassin it's first floor. It is.
As I replied down below: Little does Danny know that houses in medieval times tended to have dirt "ground floors" where they would store things. The living area, the first floor (and so on), was where you would sleep. Uncultured part 2?
no critical thinking on his end it seems...
Or how the french call the ground level "le rez-de-chaussée" and call floors "étages".

danny said floor so many times that ‘floor’ doesn’t even sound like a real word anymore
was looking for another comment that noticed this
Semantic satiation is a psychological phenomenon in which repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning for the listener, who then perceives the speech as repeated meaningless sounds. Extended inspection or analysis in place of repetition also produces the same effect.

I can't talk about other languages, but in every country that speaks Spanish, as far as i know, we don't have a ground floor at all, we start with the 1st floor.
