- US President Joe Biden has said Hurricane Ian could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida's history following devastation across the state.
The hurricane made landfall on Wednesday near the city of Fort Myers and brought severe flooding, high winds and storm surges.
More than 2.6 million Florida homes and businesses have no electricity and some areas have been left submerged.

God bless the rescuers, police, firefighters, search and rescue- they are my heroes... These losses make me very sad for the great state of Florida.
I know the Amish go down to help out - After the hurricane in 2008 I was driving across the state and got a flat tire on my van from the road debris - immediately a truck pulled up and 5 Amish guys got out and helped me change my tire then led me to a place I could buy a new tire - the man driving them said yes, the Amish had been in Florida helping to put new roofs on homes, they were from Lancaster , Pa
There's a Amish community in Sarasota.
Amish people don't do anything like drive etc that's not in the Bible
@@m42037 Amish people can RIDE in vehicles; it is the driving that is not allowed, but different Amish groups have different rules, so some do drive in certain scenarios, and some are not allowed to drive or ride in a motor vehicle at all. I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of life, and the amount of damage caused by this hurricane. I pray it will soon end and that it will be possible to quickly rebuild the homes, businesses and infrastructure, and make it possible for people to feel some normality again as soon as possible. With love from Norway.
There is no recovery for Florida … homeowners cannot get insurance in these areas because it’s not worth it to the insurance companies. Same in California. Insurance costs more than the mortgage in these areas.
It will only end when people stop building on a beach that repeatedly gets hit by hurricanes every damn year.
But ya
@justinetarot484 Actually, we are recovering ahead of schedule thanks to our resilience and support from our great governor. This ain't our first rodeo, my friend.
@testickles8834 Except Ft. Myers does not get hit every year, and certainly not by a major hurricane. Nice exaggeration, though.
we wish you all the best here in the UK, and I hope there are not to many casualties, God bless.
Thank you Roy. Prayers needed.

Prayers for FL & the 1st responders. I have lived through MANY hurricanes on the TX Gulf Coast, the worst being Harvey in '17. Extreme flooding is catastrophic. It is not so simple to evacuate, especially for low income families.
You're so right! Some people are unable to leave. No money, no transportation, medical needs that can't be met, and they may have several animals they love and care for that they refuse to leave. I lived through Hugo and it was an unforgettable hurricane! After all these years (25)I still panic at the mere mention of a storms arrival. 🙁😥
@@marilynwade7136 We had a 3 year old, a newborn, & 2 big dogs in 08 when Ike hit. After our disastrous attempt to evacuate Rita...when people were dying on Houston freeways...we stayed. In Ike we sheltered 6 family members (1 on home dialysis), 4 extra dogs & 12 of my aunts cats (don't ask). We lost half of our roof and water poured in the house. It was a NIGHTMARE!! No power for 16 DAYS!! I took the kids to Dallas on day 3. My husband stayed to protect all of our property. We were out of our home from September to January getting repairs. I have so much sympathy for people living through natural disasters. It is traumatizing. Poor, elderly & disabled suffer greatly. People don't understand that if you don't pull cash out you're in a bad position. NO POWER. BANKS CLOSED. You can't use the ATM or debit cards at stores that happen to be open. It's a mess. Reporter John Sudworth was not reporting from the city of Orlando in Orange County that's in the central part of the State of Florida. He's reporting from wherever in Lee County where the devastation is, there are no beaches, seaports or boats in Orlando.
Never saw any boats that nice on Lake Eola.
Areas in Orlando and Kissimmee were waist-deep and chest-deep in water from flooding caused by the masive amount of rain, not storm surge. See the youtube videos of water rescues there.

May all be well and safe. May life spring back as soon as possible.
All I could think about as I'm on the east coast of fla and was watching the water rise as the storm pounded was all the people who wouldn't leave possibly drowning as we watched 😭😭😭
Omg! So touching… feel so sorry for the affected lives
Many folks won't leave because the shelters won't take in pets. They stay home with their animals, & end up paying for their concern & loyalty with their lives.
The thing about staying is that if anything goes wrong, you're stuck. You can't get out and no one can get to you to help. I live in south Louisiana and it doesn't take much to get me to evacuate. We go to a pet friendly hotel further north. I know I'm blessed to be able to do that. I wouldn't be able to leave my pets behind either.
I was stuck on the Houston freeway for 14 hours...traveling about 30 miles in all that time...during Hurricane Rita in '05. It took us literally 15 mins to get home once we turned around. People were dying in standstill traffic. During the unprecedented flooding of Harvey, officials didn't even evacuate because the area affected was so massive. There was no way to evacuate that huge population of people. We were all trapped. It is expensive to evacuate. Low income families can't afford it. Nowadays, NO ONE can truly afford it. Prayers for FL. I feel their pain. 🙏

Boats in orlando? Must have been a realy powerfull storm
Orlando does have boats though..
There's numerous smallish lakes (& swamps) near Orlando. More than enough water to float a boat!
The alligators will be worrisome during the cleanup…
They won't be helping to clean up, they don't even have hands.
Alligators won't be too bad once the water levels go back down. If you leave them alone, they usually leave you alone. The main thing that will be worrisome is getting enough volunteers out there to help get everything gutted and debris cleaned up as quickly as possible in this first month after the storm. With all that water coming into homes, it's not safe after the first month for volunteers to help with clean up (the mold sets in at dangerous levels after that point and you habe to hire someone to do it). Insurance is going to put them all through the ringer too. Two years after Hurricanes Laura and Delta here in Southwest Louisiana, and we still have people and businesses who aren't getting money owed by their insurance, let alone the money the government is supposedly sending for those lower income families that insurance stiffed. Honestly, just getting as many people there with their own chainsaws, food, gloves, tents, etc. (there won't be power or useable running water too probably here for a month or more) as possible to help them will go a long way towards recovery.
Prayers are with these people.
Unfortunately, It would take much time to recover all these losses.i cant even imagine how terribly they are going through the aftermath of this storm. hope everything goes back to normal as soon as possible

My part of Florida (Southeastern Coast) fortunately was spared the worst of the storm.
I live in the panhandle (Pensacola) originally the storm was projected to come here which means it would have had even more time to soak up that warm energy from the Gulf of Mexico. I can only speculate but if it was a cat 4 at Lee county there's no doubt in my mind it would have been a cat 5 if it didn't change it's coarse. But nevertheless it's still just as bad and my prayers and maybe what I can afford to donate which won't be much but it's better than nothing.

Why do people decide to live in hurricane prone areas?
Not every place on the planet Earth gets hit by hurricanes, but every single place on Earth will experience SOMETHING of a natural disaster. It could be tornadoes, floods, droughts, earthquakes, mudslides, dust storms, blizzards, ice storms, there is nowhere to escape nature. All we can do is live our lives.

Floridian here. And just no. 9 deaths confirmed so far throughout the entire state, definitely not hundreds. Very little loss of life, mainly property damage, power outages and inconvenience as usual.
The total # isn't in yet, I'm sure it's way more than 9

And there are always a few deaths from the power outage too with some people not setting up their generators improperly. Always an unfortunate side effect with these storms. Please make a correction to your report. NOAA personnel are NOT storm hunters. They are with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and their job is to gather real time data in order to save lives. These are not "storm hunter" cowboys endangering lives for thrills.
So do they ''hunt'' for storms in order to gather this data as it happens or do they sit at a distance and use satellite imagery and other information. If it's the former then they are ''storm hunters'' (who DO NOT have to be cowboys and are often from universities) gathering information as it happens in order to use to hopefully save lives in the future.

People Florida is down ... what can we do to help????
The next time the State you live in calls for an evacuation one week ahead of time then evacuate. The Feds should provide FEMA monies proactively so that people can secure their homes and move to higher ground. It is horrible to have a person who survived the storm to end up drowned in post storm flood waters. Deaths could be avoided.
In Cape Coral we were only told to evacuate once the Hurricane was already on us. I have never heard a weather man say “The hurricane is here, it’s bad, to ensure your survival you must leave now.” The winds were already 60-70 mph. At that point it was either risk your life fleeing or risk your life staying. If they were to evacuate an entire week ahead of a hurricane, where would we all go? They were talking about it going anywhere from Alabama to Key West. That’s a lot of evacuees Aeri.
