- Israel’s government has moved to shut down the operations of the Al Jazeera television network in the country, branding it a mouthpiece for Hamas.
Hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the cabinet agreed to the closure, police raided the broadcaster’s office in Jerusalem on Sunday.
The broadcaster, which is headquartered in Qatar, called claims it was a threat to Israeli security a "dangerous and ridiculous lie".

What’s confusing about this whole situation is that it’s possible to both condemn the Hamas attacks _and_ think Israel has been more than heavy-handed in its response to October 7th. It’s possible to support Palestinian freedom from Israeli state oppression without being antisemitic just as it’s possible to support Israel against Islamist aggression without being anti-Muslim. These 2 things are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Too many folk are either one thing or t’other in this conflict when it’s possible to be both/and.

It's a bit rich for Al Jazeera, the news organisation of a hereditarily ruled state, to speak of impunity. As a neutral observer, Al Jazeera seemed to me to have an agenda, including in the wall to wall coverage they have given to the college protests in the US, and in their overall commentary on this conflict between Israel and Gaza. Theirs has not been a neutral and objective position.

I'm sure Nazi propaganda offered an alternative view of the war as well. There's a reason it was blocked as much as possible outside of Germany, though. Pro-Islamist propaganda is being blocked, it's not that big of a deal unless you are yourself pro-Islamist.

Qatar doesn't have freedom of the press or freedom of speech. Consequently Al Jazeera, Qatar's state funded media outlet, isn't allowed to publish anything that might be construed as critical of Islam or the government of Qatar.
