I was just going to post that she is the most authentic person I've seen in a while. She went on Jimmy Fallon and the guy couldn't handle it. Love her.
Michael Accorsi that’s funny, she seems phony and pretentious to me. Like she’s still in junior high trying to impress everyone with her sarcasm and indifference.
A couple years ago, Aubrey did one of the funniest things I've ever seen. She was on a street corner in LA and some TMZ camera guy asked her a question. Instead of just ignoring him or answering him, she literally took off running and kept running and didn't look back.
I think that is certainly part of it but I don't think it's just that by,itself. I think if the right, talented interviewer who knows how to speak to her and how to make her feel her comfortable and at ease interviews her then the interview will in general, go fine-as we saw here. Aubrey Plaza reminds me of people like Robert DeNiro,Joaquin Phoenix, Harrison Ford, Russell Brand and even Mike Tyson in that they''ll open up and be more comfortable depending on who is interviewing them ...but if the person is doing a poor job or asking them asinine questions, that's usually when the interview will go off the rails. It depends on how good the interviewer is at their job, too. Sam Jones is obviously a very good interviewer, so I think that that helped make her feel more calm, relaxed and comfortable than she can usually be in interviews.
I think Aubrey Plaza wouldn't be seen as that "awkward" in many places of the world. The need to present oneself as sociable just seems to be remarkably strong in the US. Just my suggestion as a foreigner...
Most Americans love the sound of their own voice, they tend to verbalise as part of their thought process. That's why they claim to be the best "shit talkers" on the planet - they simply don't shut up until something that sounds good comes out. That's why the saying goes "American's talk too much". In Australia we just call them seppos. Short for septic tanks, ie: full of shit.
Jake So true. I often get labeled as "akward" just for not talking much, even though when I am speaking there's nothing wrong with me. Talking less frequently is not the same as being socially inept.
Jake The only thing full of shit is you. Nothing you said is even remarkably close to being true. Way to generalize, by the way. Makes you Aussies look real smart.
I agree but I wouldn't say these days, I think it's always been hard to be yourself. Maybe these days, being yourself is given more importance though, so there's so much pressure to be yourself to the point that it gives us anxiety
Most people don't want to be. Whether they admit it or not is irrelevant but... Majority of people have that 'persona' that they'll project or 'change' to whenever they're with friends, or family, or whatever. But it's there, it's that 'character' they want other people to see them as, so they act like that as if it was their normal self. It's a very easy persona to act out, too; because it's not a completely different character but rather just your true self but with certain aspects changed to fit what the individual would like people to see.
I've always had a really hard time being myself around people I haven't met before. Imagine being yourself when you're being interviewed for a talk show that an uncountable amount of people are going to see, even years after the actual interview. We give celebrities a hard time sometimes but, as for me, I'm pretty glad I'm not one.
She uses that line in a lot of interviews, complete with looking around confused. It's funny how she talks about how planned and fake celebrity interviews are, then immediately uses a memorized bit gag almost as if to prove it.
I love this. Each person has a level of bullshit they are able to spew. She, refreshingly cant spew that much before she has a problem with it. We need more people like this.
I'm positive that I'm not the first person to say this, but it's so refreshing that this guy actually lets his interviewee speak instead of talking over them.
I agree - Aubrey (IMHO) is a difficult person to interview. I've seen quite a few of her interviews ( all have been awkward). Aubrey has spoken with ease and charm in this interview .... she even passes off as a easy/good interview.
And Graham Norton. His show is well researched but it's also mostly spontaneous and because all the celebrities are on the sofa for the duration of the show (and given alcohol), there's a much more relaxed, natural atmosphere.
everyone is so fake in this world and afraid to talk about things that are perhaps topics that make you vulnerable. We love her because she's real, and the way she handles fake bullshit.
i know i would be awkward. the fear of saying something polarizing, a true feeling or belief. i could very easily get myself in hot water. i could go on an hour rant, and one word would be all "they" need.
Aubrey's entire schtick is being something or someone that she is not..... a comedian and actor ...... that being said, i believe i know just what you mean..... Aubrey gives off vibes that attracts us to her ...... She would make a fantastic salesman ...... She could sell ice cubes to eskimos ...... It is what makes her such a great comic and actress - her ability to SELL IT to us - and i am buying!!!!
Yeah. I watched a compilation of her interviews on various talk shows and you can see the difference in this one. She's so comfortable here and her speech just flows, but on the other shows she has this awkward vibe about her. As if she doesn't want to be there or, as she said in this video, she doesn't like pre-hearsed interviews. I, for one, couldn't agree more. It makes the interview less genuine.
It's because on the talk shows she is probably thinking "okay soon he is gonna ask about that thing, and then I gotta tell that story about the thing" etc, so it feels like a performance in her head, and not being real. Some people can make that work, ignore the thoughts about how weird it is, and make the conversation seem somewhat natural, more or less. Or some people (like Norm Macdonald) just throw out the script. But for people like her, she can't get over the weird feeling. People are just different.
I searched for a video like this because I assumed she was able to have a normal conversation and and wanted to see/hear it, unlike when she’s on late night shows, which I find too weird.
she's so right with the whole "these people dont care what i did over the summer". it does make sense most talk show hosts appear painfully unbothered and fake with just an artificial persona and that kind of irks me so it makes so much sense that the actual person being interviewed would be way more turned off in that setting.
The way she looks & responds sometimes is like a lady version of Kurt Cobain sometimes (probably without the drugs etc.) She just never seems to give a shit or like she really doesn't want to be ther/ have to talk about herself. I really like that.
And THIS is why she is simply one of the coolest, most fun people in the world. Her sense of awareness and playful, but seasoned, almost jaded, personality. Perhaps she is being loyal to her 12 year old self like she says. Very cool.
He asks genuinely intriguing and insightful questions, and then lets the guest speak - which is so valuable in this age of overly zany talk shows. It sort of reminds me of the old Dick Cavett show, but perhaps even better!

she is so nice. many people think she is purposefully trying to come across as anti-social or dark humor like. i believe she is super sincere and truthful, even in her more staged/semi-scripted late night talk appearances.

@@waterwind2266 Letterman? Nah... He was always interrupting his guests and was too eager to talk over them. Very egotistical and always wanted to talk about himself. I specifically remember when Rodney Dangerfield was on his show and was trying to do his comedy routine and Letterman kept interrupting him every 10 seconds.
I can't explain why I feel this way, but there's something exactly the same about Aubrey Plaza and Dave Grohl. Maybe it's some facial feature or something in how they talk... I don't know but I can't escape it.
@ClandestineOstrich Of course you should talk the same way to everyone, respectfully. You don't talk to a teenager and a judge differently because one is more important than the other, you talk to them differently because they each have a different grasp of language.

Didn't realize this until recently but Kristin is probably the worst actress I've come across. She does NOT know how to get into character. She's awkward in almost everything she does.
The actual point of a talk show (at least late night) isn't the talk, it's the entertainment that arises from the interaction. At that, she is one of the most entertaining guests. I love her appearances.
DanHarkless That’s how she started, funnily enough. She pretended to be a stand up comedian to get a role, and then people actually started booking her, so she thought why the hell not
LOL! That's so Aubrey. Found some clips on RUclips but haven't had a chance to watch them yet - gonna do that tonight. Thanks for the rest of the tale.
She's so talented, and this guy ruined it by suggesting that she dosent know she's making people uncomfortable, he's successfully ruined the interview, made legendary into ordinary, she handled it so well
That was one of the most clueless, tone-deaf questions I've ever seen an interviewer ask. The hurt and confusion in her eyes at 1:16 and the next few seconds, and in her voice when she responds "no...", literally breaks my heart every time I watch it. That moment sums up what life is like for an authentic INTP person (like Aubrey), living in this non-INTP world.
she's like I don't know where I am most of the time and starts looking around. I have to say you calm her down more than most host. This was the most normal I've seen her
I care about what you did over the summer, Aubrey. You're amazing in every single way and I feel blessed to get to witness a person like you preform. Thank you :)
i agree ..... and Aubrey still seems shocked and confused by her amazing celebrity status ...... She is the #1 Box Office draw in the business today (IMO) ...... Next year she will be in THREE feature films ...... She doesn't seem to have a high opinion of herself ..... She claims that she refuses to watch herself on screen.... That comes across to us as making her seem unpretentious and vulnerable ..... Those are really unusual characteristics for Hollywood celebs - they always seem so pretentious and confident ...... I believe it is one of the things that makes Aubrey so attractive - it makes us want to HUG HER - to reassure her!
The key to her humor and success for that matter is that she is just being herself without wearing a mask or rehearsed, anything in that direction makes her feel uncomfortable. Women and people in general are their funniest when their responses or interactions are natural, and if comes across being awkward it's sometimes funnier. In contrast, even "the so called great comedians who claim to improvise" are well rehearsed in doing that and done their routines literally hundreds of times; sometimes funny yes, but that style of humor and delivery gets old, so when people hear Aubrey for the first time it's funny because it's different from the usual "professional" comedians that we are used to hearing from.
I am very late to becoming a huge fan of Aubrey's. But I am. I have this weird compulsive desire to watch everything that she's done. I don't want to stop watching her. I think she is far more fascinating when she is trying to be herself than when she's acting in a show. But both are pretty mesmerizing. I don't know what it is about her - she just has that certain quality! I hope she is always in entertainment and we always get to see her! Best of luck Aubrey where every you are!
WOW in such a short clip Aubrey successfully deconstructed and exposed the forced and artificial nature of both Late Night Talk Shows and Stand Up Comedy. Luckily she isn't cynical about it, just honest! Her and Bo Burnham need to co-write something.
I didntt care who she was until her amazing talk show interviews. She's original and a realist. We are surrounded by fake people who want to just fit in it's actually pretty pathetic if you sit and think about who you really are vs the person you're trying to be just to satisfy the people around you. When i say satisfy i mean it in the sense that you don't want them to think you're weird or alien or you don't want it to cost you their daily company and friendship. People need to stop thinking about " hope she doesn't think im weird " and worry more about being the real you.
I don’t know who this interviewer is, but he’s great, very professional, calm, likable and let’s the person speak rather than interrupting and going off track. He should have his own show on tv.
Really like her - she'd be a great girlfriend. She's never boring, and I like her because she's a little unpredictable. The kind of girl who'd be fun over coffee. Lots of laughs.
seems like the girl to go out with you, than make out with your best friend in front of you, just for the excitement... unpredictable and fun right. or did you have something else in mind
Exactly. She has this persona she tries to force to make up for her utter lack of personality. She uses the exact same persona in every role (proving she cannot act) and uses it in interviews as well. She's an insecure, uninentillent spoiled brat and it's painful listening to her.
Fun Fact: Janet Jackson gave her that sweater as a birthday present. It's the one Janet wore for the shoot of the music video "Scream" with her brother Michael. Aubrey didn't like the color though and had it changed to white, unfortunately in the process the spikes of the sweater shrunk...
David L Everything you just said is a giant straw man argument. I simply pointed out she says "like" quit a bit. Everything else was inferred by you. Why so defensive?
It makes me wonder if she has Asperger's. You get a sense she is highly intelligent and her friends and cast members speak of how caring and warm she is. Yet in almost every interview she struggles to string together sentences or ends up being strangely morbid and dark. I honestly love seeing her speak because I relate to it so much. Doing that friendly small talk thing with people you don't care about and don't care about you can be near impossible sometimes and it feels like so much unnecessary work.
kay nola she had a stroke when she was 20 and she was unable to speak , write, form sentences ,stuff like that. it’s probably one of the reasons why she struggles to string together
She's real. That's what that is. A lot of people try their hardest not to be awkward. She's just herself. And its awesome. She's me everyday when I talk to anyone.
To quote a genius someone -many will not know Thelonius Monk- :“ the greatest artist is the one who is most themselves “. Props Aubrey- its the right highway.
Having never watched P&R I've stumbled on Aubrey for the first time, loved all her ad-libs on talk shows but this is awesome understanding her thinking and it's just that, what seems to be the first time I've heard her give straight answers. Now I understand. And yes, I fund her terrifically funny.

I have never seen any of Aubrey Plaza's movies, but after watching a number of her interviews, I really want to see them 😁.
The actual point of a talk show (at least late night) isn't the talk, it's the entertainment that arises from the interaction. At that, she is one of the most entertaining guests. I love her appearances.
Wait, Aubrey did stand-up!? I had no idea. Gotta go search for some clips.
Her Sarah Silverman bit is fire
right?! mee too!!!
spoiler alert: she’s not funny
I effing LOVE your interviews... you’re great at getting people out of themselves! Glad I found your channel!
Is this going to cure my social anxiety
i even forgot I commented let alone watched the video but the message still hit
1:00 that´s one of the many reasons I love this show!
"I don't know where I am...it's true...most of the time."
This is the best interview of her I seen so far. Well done.
She's so talented, and this guy ruined it by suggesting that she dosent know she's making people uncomfortable, he's successfully ruined the interview, made legendary into ordinary, she handled it so well
What's so legendary about her? All she does is act awkward in interviews.
Make FAKE people uncomfortable, maybe.
Is it just me or is this guy just low-key downing her the whole time? He made HER feel uncomfortable!
she's like I don't know where I am most of the time and starts looking around. I have to say you calm her down more than most host. This was the most normal I've seen her
It's really kind of extremely attractive not only how real she is but also just how physically attractive she is as a woman. pfffffff
Ever notice how gorgeous people's faces look in black and white? Black and white still photos also evoke more emotions than color photos.
Smart woman
And beautiful! ;
i just stepped into this world of AP and I've only watched her interviews till now and you really see the contrast in those and this one
She could play a good Chloe in Life is Strange when it becomes live action.
I never expected to love her more after this but it happened.
Just like all her other videos...
she talks for 1 minute 50 seconds and says "like" 27 times. thats roughly one "like" every four seconds.
whats not to like .
Any time I hear "pre-interview" I miss Craig Ferguson. It's a shame so many great actors never appeared on the most bizarre late night talk show.
everything she said made sense.
I love love love all her awkward interviews!!!
She has so much color!
She looks amazing in any Light... !
I don’t know who this interviewer is, but he’s great, very professional, calm, likable and let’s the person speak rather than interrupting and going off track. He should have his own show on tv.
hes got one, this channel. youtube c: who needs tv? hes really good , a rare breed these days
That's the way to live, "honor your 12 year old self"
How wonderful. An individual would finds it difficult to be fake..
Really like her - she'd be a great girlfriend. She's never boring, and I like her because she's a little unpredictable. The kind of girl who'd be fun over coffee. Lots of laughs.
Are you really rating celebrities in categories like girlfriend material? That is so ridiculos.
seems like the girl to go out with you, than make out with your best friend in front of you, just for the excitement... unpredictable and fun right. or did you have something else in mind
Great video. The title is very misleading.
She is not funny...love me for who I try to be.
Exactly. She has this persona she tries to force to make up for her utter lack of personality. She uses the exact same persona in every role (proving she cannot act) and uses it in interviews as well. She's an insecure, uninentillent spoiled brat and it's painful listening to her.
I never think of her as awkward , maybe fearless and unrehearsable . If you push her , she'll go there , if she feels like it .
"none of these people cared what I did over the summer..." - if you know how deep that was like this comment
It made me so sad when she said that :/
Fun Fact: Janet Jackson gave her that sweater as a birthday present. It's the one Janet wore for the shoot of the music video "Scream" with her brother Michael. Aubrey didn't like the color though and had it changed to white, unfortunately in the process the spikes of the sweater shrunk...
“Yay, my finest work”
She got jobs because of those interviews😂👍🏼
This is actually a really comfortable interview (about uncomfortable interviews)
"Like, like, like, like, like, like..."
David L
People also substitute genuine wit for sarcasm. It's easier you see.
David L
Everything you just said is a giant straw man argument. I simply pointed out she says "like" quit a bit. Everything else was inferred by you. Why so defensive?
David L
I also enjoy how you dropped the sarcasm. Good for you.
Aubrey you are so refreshingly honest and woke me up to the fakeness of talk shows !!
nobody:
not a single soul:
not even god:
Aubrey: *I don't know where I am. Most of the time*
Aubrey:*looks around, confused*
The nobody meme is dead
@@stretchscreamers yeah i mean i commented this half a year ago asdfghjhgbf
Carmen! Yeah but the meme is about 2 years old. But I didn’t notice that ur comment was from 6 months ago so my bad
If you don’t get her, you can’t have it explained to you. If you do, you freaking love her.
That's probably the only recording in existence where she seems to have no "mask" on at all.
Then what's all that makeup?? Gotcha.
Can't get enough of her talk show interviews they crack me up
Allison Janney needs to play her mom 👻
Her or Olivia Munn
@@damaniqphillip2756 What about Allison Janney and Olivia Munn?
That would be an awesome pairing! But I can one-up you... then add Carol Burnett as her grandmother :)
Norm Macdonald is the king of derailing talk shows
Are you aware we can now record in colour?
B & W is where the real magic happens. You are required to use your own mind.
She's real. That's what that is. A lot of people try their hardest not to be awkward. She's just herself. And its awesome. She's me everyday when I talk to anyone.
The only person who can break Aubrey out of her exterior cold shell is her costar Chris Pratt from "Park and Recreation" show
To quote a genius someone -many will not know Thelonius Monk- :“ the greatest artist is the one who is most themselves “.
This woman is literally me. I totally get everything about her.
