By definition of what a sport is, marching band fits it.
Pepl often think that sports have to be “contact” sports, but there are so many that aren’t. Most sports in Olympics aren’t. Figure skating and gymnastics for example. It’s performance based. Peak talent. Marching band has that performance aspect. Pep band, not a sport, concert band not a sport, (those r still insanely competitive tho) marching however is most definitely.
The amount of times people verbally attack me at school for saying marching band is a sport is interesting..
no. just no
That is true
@@just_shatyes just yes
Ppl don’t realize how hard it is to play an instrument on its own
And than you start marching and playing at the same time
Frr
Fr its so hard when i first started i couldn’t get a sound out of my flute until we were already playing actual songs
Exactly. Especially with brass
Exactly
Fr
"walking the field"☠️ by that logic football is running around the field, with a ball
Half the time we are running too
No. By that logic, football is a break
We literally run too
Nah cause the winds and battery do whole preshow choreo like they set down their instruments and do stuff in the ground it’s really cool
Football players are told what to do after every 3-5 SECONDS of play…..and they have a BENCH.
A wise man once said "Marching band is like a sport... Only a lot harder."
This needs more likes
Definition of sport
A physical activity of skill where individuals exert energy and compete against groups for fun and entertainment
Physical activity- we don’t just march, we also do push ups, stretch, run laps, etc.
Exert energy- we have to catch our breath after playing a full rep, then again we have to during the rep, cuz we blow so much air we have to breathe a lot.
Skill- I’ve never seen someone pick up an instrument and march with it perfectly on their first day, I’m a freshmen and I could still use some practice on my marching technique.
Compete- We have an international sport called DCI (Drum Corps International) where bands from around the country compete against each other, and trust me, in DCI, they are hard on ya, really hard.
As a -band kid- saxophonist... Marching band is definitely not a sport. It matches the definition of a sport. But there is more to a sport than that broad definition.
THANK YOU.
And in high-school there's BOA
@@jrwarrior9962 oh yea that was so much fun this year
As an actual high-school tenor saxophonist, you have no experience of being in a true marching band if you really think it’s not a sport. The other kids don’t see the amount of work we put in, the countless hours, they only see the 9 minutes of halftime. Marching Band is one hell of a sport, especially if golf counts as a sport.
As someone who's friend with someone who has to march with a giant ass tuba. Keep up with fast tempos. Do some physical visuals like dancing to keep the crowd entertained. And breathe without missing a beat
I'd say marching band is a sport
I just switched to sousaphone and I relate so much to this

People in marching band are considered athletes and we do a lot of stuff
Yes, it is. A lot of people do not realize how much effort and practice it takes to be good at marching band. There’s a ton of factors that go into it, and by definition, marching band fits into a sport.
For real, marching band needs more recognition than it gets😭😭
As I am in high school marching band and play one of the heaviest instruments (euphonium) I can confirm that marching band is a sport
Its the heaviest instrument you have to hold up in front of you, making it even worse. Stay strong fellow baritone.
Tenors are heavier if I’m not mistaken
@@Monkeyd.copper but the thing is that saxes have strap that support the full weight
@@Monkeyd.copper tenors get straps and they don' have to hold it in front of their face
@@Monkeyd.copper yes but you dont need to hold them up at an angle
Fr.. It sucks when people don't know how difficult it is In marching band, I've played basketball n I believe marching band is more difficult. 😭
Same here! This is what I am saying! Marching band is literally the most energy occupying thing I do and have ever done…and I truly do believe marching band summer camps are literally military boot camps in their own ways lol for example
I’m a band nerd and I’m proud of it.
Same😂
I’ve had someone ask me how marching band is a sport and they didn’t agree with me so I told them that we win way more awards then they do
Bro just make the people who say that try marching band, guaranteed they’ll go home and cry
Fr lmao
Literally! They'll cry and complain when it gets to calisthenics 😢
It is not hard lmao im in marching band and soccer and soccer is way harder
@@xiazhang1093 what are you, a marching cymbal? Because i have best friends saying soccer is so easy and marching band is wayyyyy more difficult... And plus, all you do in soccer is focus on one thing. In marching band, you focus on 10,000 different things at once ☺
@@dorothyluvsu what 😂 i have never heard someone say that soccer is so easy, in fact it is a sentence that will never br said ever
If matching band was any easier they would call it football
It is a sport!!
Marching Band classifies as a sport.
It is a sport!!! So if you don't think it is but it is
Marching band is 100% a sport and if you say it’s not then you have clearly never marched around a giant football field with the weight of a bass drum all on your back. It’s definitely a sport and you can fight me on that.
A FELLOW BASSIST
agreed, im a tenor player and my back and legs are dying after practice 😅
Me to bass feels like I’m 50 and worked construction most my life
Seriously I have a friend that carried the heaviest base drum for 2 years and now she has where a back brace. Now I have to carry that same one and also have to where a back brace. Anyone who wants to call it easy can where it for 3 hours straight instead if they say its not a sport
It absolutely is a sport
Marching band takes strength, time, patience, grit, and everything any other "sport" takes plus more. In Texas, marching in 104 degree weather without rain, clouds, and minimal water is rough. Also not to mention being in step, time, and posture are all HUGE parts of it. And we have to use what little air we have for breathing while marching in the hot sun for our instruments... Over and over. And low brass especially, (I'm a trombone) are dripping in sweat and exhausted by the time 45 minute practice is over.
I'm in a (6A State) HS band in Texas, and I can indeed confirm marching is a sport. Also saying that we "walk around the field" is genuinely funny, lol. It's a sport, but not a game.
People don’t realize how much of a workout marching band is 😂
Marching is a sport learning an instrument is hard on its own but then you need to memorize music and work so hard to march perfectly and
There was a study on this stuff and actually, the heart rate of of a marching band player playing and walking around the field is the same as a well trained marathon runner in the middle of a marathon
Marching band is a sport, as is colorguard 😁
The response to people who say that we just walk around a field and play an instrument:
Okay, if it’s so easy and not a sport, you go do it
Marching band Is a sport
we get the same amount of pe credits as the football players so
‘Behind every great marching band . . . Is a bald band director’ a wise person
(Most of the time it’s true. . .)
According to Google and my knowledge of sport history, Marching band is currently a sport.
We put the girl with severe scoliosis on tenor drums... genius
Marching band is definitely a sport!!
(My marching band friends say if someone doesn’t consider marching band as a sport. . . It’s a red flag)
Try marching around the field doing choreography at the same time while memorizing your dots and memorized your music plus doing it all great at the first time (no one can do that)
I’m in marching band, I play the quads. I can tell you now it fits the definition of a sport. You walk while you play and you use a lot of energy
“Walk around the field?” 😮 Hell no we did not just walk around the field we marched heel toe and had to glide backwards. The drills were intense!
Don’t forget jazz running!
@@makinbacon3846 yesss!! That was so much fun seeing if we would get to our next set on time. 😅
As a former high school marcher, I can definitely confirm that whether or not you may think it’s a sport it is definitely one of the hardest “activities” ever created. I definitely think it’s a sport but if you dare to argue, I just want to say that I do play what people call “real sports” (aka basketball, football, soccer, etc.) and even though I have been playing sports my whole life, nothing has been more energy occupying than marching band. I personally think it’s harder than most sports. Like, as bad as it sounds, I have never seen more people pass out performing doing anything else than marching band, we are worked to the core and you have to pay attention to everything you do to take care of yourself and about playing your instrument and the actual marching itself.
Marching band is a sport we compete and its more difficult than it looks Im in the Colorgaurd for Marching band and its difficult but i love it
YES IT'S A SPORT AND SHOULD BE APPRECIATED
Marching by logic is considered a sport. Some people don’t understand the struggles with step size, tempo changes, memorization, or just playing the instrument and marching together.
IT IS A SPORT AND IM IN IT!
Yes they have 2 weeks of band camp from 8am to 9pm to practice in mid July
Yea, I carried a 47-pound drum on my chest with perfect posture for hours a day in high school. Band camp was from 8 AM to 6 PM with two fifteen minute breaks and 30 for lunch. in the middle of june. We watched the football players, the cheerleaders, and baseball players come and go.
My response is always "pfft, you try it"
Bro my marching band is! We are the one of the only bands who actually DANCE while performing. Other bands have their majorettes/charettes do all the dancing
Its on the list for my school sports and its physical and competitive, physically tho it is easy but so is tennis
Marching band is like a boot camp, only enjoyable at some points
One of my friends asked me this and I told him, “go blow through a straw and run a mile, that’s how it feels.”
"We don't just walk.... We walk in style" my band director
Mine says we don’t walk in style
We ‘march’ style
As high school marching band player it is in fact very hard. For us we take 2 weeks out of summer break for are butts to spend ten hours of marching and playing repeatedly every time. I can only imagine DCI groups.
It all depends on how seriously your band takes it
These are fighting words!! 😂
Marching band IS A SPORT. PERIOD.
If playing games online is a sport, so is marching band
If we were going by the definition of a sport, Marching Band fits
It is!!!!! I’ve been debating this with non band people at my school who say it isn’t a sport. You literally march and play your instrument at the same time! Plus you’re not on the bench for the season
Marching Band is a sport, it’s because you have to get to your destination at the right time, and it takes a lot of work
Bro if u hear one more person say “walking around a field” when talking about marching band I’m gonna lose my mind
Walk around? Has this man seen DCI?? Lol
To all the people that say it isn’t a sport, try walking in time to a metronome, while playing the tuba, do some choreography, in a hot and tight suit, all while doing it in 100 degree weather (at least where I live). Then tell me it isn’t a sport
It sure is a sport. We practice more than football boys
We have practices, competitions, we are a sport
Bro, everyone says it's not a sport when it is!
Marching band is a sport. As a upcoming freshman in a 2A school I have been in marching band for 2 years and will be my 3rd this year I march trumpet and I think that’s hard.😂 football people think football is harder it might be but us marching band kids stand outside in like 92 degrees and 100% humidity and we do that for the whole day and football at my school does it for half a day plus they probably get 2-4 water breaks every hour while in my band we have about 1 to 0 per hour put the 5 minute water breaks we need we don’t have makes us push forward and get a lot done bc it pushes us to water breaks we need so yes it is a sport
(Edit) we also carry around our instruments and it’s hard trust me people think it’s easy it’s not and if you get injured like I am kinda with playing trumpet and my right wrist is now hurt it sucks and hard to play
Yessss marching and playing at the same time is hard with a alto sax and I'm in middle school
Heh heh my friend we do not walk... we March, run, prey to God we finish without dying, and blackout half way through while still moving. True story it happened to me lol
Colorguard feels like a sport 100% I’m so sore after practice and we have to stretch, we have to walk/run all over a field like 100 times, and we have to throw heavy objects
Playing an instrument while marching in the heat is not easy, especially all the different marching techniques and a bunch of other oddly specific things
WE BUILD ARM AND CALF MUSCLES😤
Yes those drums be hurting
I had a parade yesterday, and I marched in it, and my arms hurt so much after marching.
i dare someone like this to march around a football field at 180 BPM with full uniform on in 105° weather, not missing a single note or rhythm, and hitting every single one of your sets. dont even get me started about the HORRID sock tan you get man
There’s been some actual biometric research about the cardiovascular needs and also the vascular needs of a Marching band member, they found that it takes the cardio of a marathoner. While it also takes the respiratoria needs of a sprinter running an 800 meter dash
It all depends how you define a sport, if you define a sport as just a physical activity then it is a sport
I had this exact same conversation with this kid in cross country in my first period. Kid was like “all y’all do is walk and play some music” so I made a deal with him and we switched activities for a night, so I made him go to a 3 hour practice and I went to an hour of cross country and I beat like half the xc Team and he passed out on the field. Long story short he hasn’t brought up anything about marching band not being a sport.
a lot of us have dances or stunts we do while marching making it harder
Those outfits and marching wether its cold or hot makes it a sport
Fundamentals are huge when marching. And some of them are PAINFUL
I said this to my track friend and wrestling friend the got so offended that i said marching band is a sport and that it is tough
If golf is a sport, marching band definitely is
dude when people say it isnt a sport im just like, ok, so me carrying huge 30-50 pond sousaphone while marching in formation isnt a sport
Marching band is not necessarily a sport in the traditional sense but it's sure as hell an athletic activity and is definitely worth the gym credit a lot of schools honor for completing however many seasons of it.
I’m in the marching band at a 7A school, and we try everything to make sure our instruments are equal with others, always look at the drum majors, carrying a not light instrument for an entire night of a football game, etc… Marching band is a sport, you are working your legs while marching, working your arms and biceps while holding the instrument, and it’s “physical activity” OUTSIDE. Marching Band has always been a sport, those who say it’s not and thinks it’s easy, join marching band its not easy but not hard either. Marching Band is Fun y’all would enjoy it
BE FOR REAL. Marching band DEFINITELY is athletic, may not be considered a sport but you do TONNS of stretches and you LITERALLY run laps. around the feild.
You must extremely unathletic if you consider that difficult.
@@moneyhordingguy5009 Oh I definitely do consider it difficult for a 12yr girl. As "un-athletic" as that sounds you probably haven't been to a day of marching band practice. Keep you and your snarky comments away from me and do something worth your own time❤️
@@arcticmonkeysluver I actually am a trombone in marching band and it is easy and the only people who complain about it are those who have no stamina or athletic capability
@@moneyhordingguy5009 Marching bands have different ways of doing there warm-ups, And I dont consider marching a sport but the term for sport is "a game, competition, or similar activity, done for enjoyment or as a job, that takes PHYSICAL EFFORT and skill and is played or done by following particular rules: [ C ] Football, baseball, and basketball are all team sports."
@@arcticmonkeysluver Physical effort is an incredibly broad term, like I could say monopoly is a sport because you have to move the peices. Do you play any other sports?
Bro marching band is def a sport my band camp this yr was a dci type show where we had 5 hour practices while it was 110 degrees f
as a bottom bass drum and a soccer player, id take soccer practice over band rehearsals ANYDAY. Marching bottom bass is so much more physically demanding than playng soccer.
As someone who does both REAL sports and marching band. It is NOT a sport. Not even close.
MARCHING BAND IS A SPORT
I mean for us a small screw up like making the slightest move at “attention” costs us 10 push ups so it’s basically the same
Every Blue Devils member is fucking ripped
You have to think about being in step, dynamics, tone, choreography, and count all at the same time. It's really hard and it's physically and mentally draining. I wish people would realize how hard it is lol. It's definitely a sport!
Studies have shown that brain activities in musicians happen more broadly throughout the brain.
I’m in marching band myself and marching band is a lot very hard and people think that playing an instrument is easy it takes talent
Yes
It's a sport
when you get to drum line, its definitely a sport, the lightest drum is still around 10 pounds, with the heaviest being 35-40
after all the pain and lack of breathing that comes after marching, it better be classified as a sport.
I played football and marching band, and often times I would find myself out of breath during marching band even though I am relatively fit, and it wasn't that marching was hard, its just that playing a instrument, for me a low brass instrument, makes it super hard to breath because your constantly spending all of your air into playing the instrument while also marching, in my opinion, while at times football got tiring, marching band also gets tiring mainly due to lack of air
Literally wgi championships!!!! Highschools do marching band championships called wgi and there is professional marching bands called drum Corp
Ok so I played volleyball for several years in school and on a different team that played more competitively around the u.s and I have never been as out of breath after a volleyball as I have been after a marching show. It is intense and it does so much to your body
I started marching band this year and I realize now it 100% is a sport
I don’t think you realize the sheer *VOLUME* of *LUNGS* you need to make it through *ONE PART* and f a good show
We practice more than the football players lmao. We've gotten 1s at every comp this season (just got home from states) and the football team had a 10-0 LOSE TO WIN STREAK.
He is a jock, he is a D1 athlete, he is a member of the marching band.
i don’t get people who say that marching band isn’t a sport.
it’s mentally exhausting. it’s physically exhausting.
you have to focus on many things at once, not missing a beat. playing an instrument while counting in your head. you also can’t move at all once you’re at attention, so if a bee or another kind of disturbance comes at you, you can’t move. you’re also always on your feet, especially at band camp.
