Only band kids understand. Nobody know the pain marching band is. It’s painful. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s there that I made my greatest friends. And enemies. It’s there I found teachers I loved and teachers I hated. It’s where I learned to feel feeling for others. Especially a tenor saxophone that gave me hope. I’m surprised he was so kind to a Euphonium like me. Never give up band. It’s like giving up a family. Nothing can replace it. And no sport will ever be like it. Band stays with you. It will not abandon you. Band is forever.❤️❤️❤️

i’m in colorguard but play trumpet in concert band. My first marching band year was last year, 8th grade. Technically I wasn’t allowed to be in the show, but I was capable enough to do just that. RING was the title of our show last year, i’ll never forget what it was like, seeing that if I work hard I’ll do great things, making friends I trusted, and enjoying life, because for years I struggled with being happy. But I found my happy place. the field. Last competition was windy and rainy, so of course I dropped, but at the end, that final toss, the final note, the last time i’ll wear that uniform, that was it.
3 months ago, I lost my Mom. She was my best friend and my biggest supporter. When she was in the hospital, one of the last things she told me was “try out for rifle line, try anything you want to, sweetie” so I did. I’ve never been rifle, but I worked hours to make her happy. Usually freshman don’t make rifle line, but I did. I work hard for not only me and others, but her. My biggest supporter, my best friend, a beautiful angel. I hope she knows how much I miss her and sees the work i’m putting toward something I love. I will never forget, she would watch me practice, record me and post it on facebook. At games, winterguard shows, and colorguard competitions, I would hear a shout of “that’s my baby!” and i’d look in the stands, a wide grin on her face. A big hug afterwards, “you did amazing” she’d tell me. Thank you, Mom. I did it.

im in the same place. i lost my mom three years ago. and marching band has been the only thing that has been constant in my life. the only place ive ever felt happy. the only place i have real friends and the one place i will never ever forget. there are times at rehearsal where i wish i didn’t have to be there, but at the end of the rehearsal, i don’t want to go home. playing the last competition the last day youll be on the field, the last note you play, the last count, the last breath, it is so unforgettable.

    • @justaperson9093

God, this made me tear up. I lost my mom five years ago and it’s grueling losing your biggest supporter, but having that confidence with how hard you’ve worked and knowing she’d be proud of you makes waking up on the days without her so worth it. It’s my first year in band as a sophomore and it’s hard to do any of this without someone I know would support me endlessly, but the people and the pride that comes with band make it all worthwhile. I wish you every bit of luck, patience and happiness in the world and I hope you find comfort and joy in everything you always do. Losing someone you love more than the world is infinitely painful, but you can always make it through.

I auditioned for battery at the end of 8th grade, and was accepted into the bass drum section, but I was going through health issues it the time, and I couldn't be a part of battery. So I decided to switch to pit rather that quit. At the end of the first semester in my freshman year, my school started our very first wgi drumline, and my health problems had subsided, and I re auditioned for bass drum, and had been on bass drum until the day I left. My first semester sophomore year, my first time in battery for marching season, our show music was more complicated than the previous year, and we dropped from 5 bass drummers to 3. I was covering 3 different bass parts on one bass drum. The night before the first football game of the season, my grandma was killed by a drunk driver, and it spawned a period of hell for my family. My little brother had started middle school, and took the loss very hard, and he hasn't been the same since. The loss of my grandma mentally destroyed my grandpa, and he declined in all aspects of his health until the day he died. And at the same time, the King Fire was burning through Northern California (where my high school is), and it triggered a massive asthma attack for my mom, and landed her in the hospital, while my dad was 3 hours away planning a funeral. I went to that football game, with the weight of the world on my shoulders, knowing that my mom was in the hospital, that my grandma was killed, that my brother was grieving very hard, and I put on my bass drum, and performed with the band throughout the game. During the first half of the game, little things were irritating the crap out of me, like my section leader/drum captain being more interested in talking to his girlfriend than keep track of what the drumline was doing or not doing, and people walking through the band section that weren't members of band. At one point, I yelled at some of my fellow drumline members for not being attentive, and playing when they weren't supposed to, and that was when my drum captain interrupted talking to his girlfriend to yell at me, saying I had no authority to tell anyone what to do, as he was drum captain and I wasn't. Then came halftime, and right when our drum major counted us in, one of the hooks on my harness came loose, which caused my drum to jolt, throwing me off guard, and managed to push me from irritated to actually angry. However, I channeled that anger into my performance, and I experienced this overwhelming feeling of "f**k everyone, I'm going to play this show, and if people don't like it, they can screw themselves" and it was one of the best performances I ever did with drumline. I've never experienced feelings of stage fright ever again after that, and I survived the rest of that night with relative ease. Our family tragedy, however, still pertained, and after the game, I went right back to stress, sadness, and anger. And that pretty much continued for the rest of the season. It was one of my lowest points mentally, but I managed to channel all of my frustration into my playing and marching, and it turned out to be the marching season I'm most proud of. I know I'm two years late, but I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm glad color guard served as an outlet for you during that time. Because for me, if I didn't have drumline during that part of my life, my head would have probably exploded.

I don't know what kind of school you go to but if you're really giving it everything and working hard you shouldn't be completely fine after an 8 hour practice.

At my school we always practice on a parking lot with a bunch of dots everywhere in addition to the hard lines and hash marks, so we can coordinate better. Then we start moving that to the stadium so we can practice without all the dots and be in a real stadium.
Last year I played Marimba of Front Ensemble, so I never had to worry about marching and just had to play my music. This year, I became a Snare Drum so I have to constantly have a 30-pound Drum on my person, actually be able to march, and have to always be in time, be in sync with the lead snare drum (who is usually to my right, sometimes left), and help the rest of my drumline keep the band in time. Being in drumline is much harder than Front Ensemble, but it’s much more rewarding.
I hate marching band sometimes, but I will miss it when it’s gone.

Currently a sophomore in H.S., and doing my second year of marching band. Last year I wanted nothing to do with marching band, I despised it. Marching band was mandatory for freshmen, though. Up until that point all I knew was parades. And then I reached our final competition at the University of Illinois. The giant stadium, huge crowd... it all made me so happy. So I decided to stay in marching band. We’ve currently learned movement 1 of our show this year, Hymns to the Earth, and it’s so fun. We have themed days at band camp, and us trumpets have many traditions and games. I plan to try out for section leader next year and my best friend is going to try for drum major. Not only was I shoved into an amazing band, I was shoved into an amazing family. I was given the opportunity to leave, and I didn’t.

This video was funny at the beginning, but then it got really emotional. About halfway through I got really emotional. I'm balling right now. All of my memories of my last two years of marching band are now flooding back to me. It's hard to explain how I'm feeling. I just know that marching band has changed my life forever, and I am so thankful I am able to be apart of it. This video really shows you how amazing marching band really is. I will never forget my first performance at my first football game. I won't ever forget the feeling I got the first time I watched both of the shows put together, forming something amazing. I will never ever, forget the feeling I got when they announced that my band would be going to state for the first time in school history. Marching band is an emotional roller coaster. You will hate it, but at the same time you love every second of it. Even though you complain about it during the season, you miss it when it's over. My marching season just ended, and I'm sad. But I still have two years left, and I can't wait to see what crazy adventures those years hold.

No one except band members and the directors really understands how hard it is. But even though its hard, even though we sometimes feel like quitting, we keep going on, because we become a family. And after all hardships, finally when we perform in front of the world, we enjoy it from our heart. No matter what band, what institution, what country, we all work hard. No band is perfect from the very beginning, we practice every single day until our body automatically moves along the music we play. As a member of a highschool band, (kyoto tachibana) I appreciate all your hard work.

I was in band all throughout middle school and high school. My college is just now starting to piece together a band but we are just a little pep band. Everyone I went to high school with wonders why I am still so involved with the high school band even though it is a whole new generation. I had a pretty crappy home life, and band was literally my entire life. I dealt with a pretty bad drug problem as well, and band was kind of a way that helped me ween off my drug use. When I felt like I was good for nothing, band showed me that I am a hard worker, and proved that with hard work comes success. Performing and hearing a crowed cheer, cow bells ring, and air horns blow as I was walking onto a field made me feel so proud of myself. Performing gave me a high that I always craved but could only experience once or twice a week. My last competition, I bawled like a baby, and we knew that our last football game was going to be the semifinals. I was crying as I was performing because I knew that every step I took, was my last, and I broke down on my very last step because I knew it was over.

Marching band is amazing but people don’t see the hours upon hours upon hours of work we put into band and how big of a part of our lives it is. You form amazing bonds and meet a ton of new people. It is such a huge part of my life, I’m not sure what I’d do without it.

Same, I’m a freshman and I play clarinet. The motivation, the long hours of band camp, practice, marching and many more is tiring, but some how we managers come back to it. I have a really supportive boyfriend and he plays trombone. Band is just like home to me. It’s so special. And I’m really nervous because I have my first show Saturday, it’s a competition. I am so nervous. But the band at my school, is so underrated and non band kids are like “shut up band kid!” Or “band isn’t a sport, your weird because your in band” But people don’t know is that it’s much MUCH more than that. I am proud to say, that I’m officially a band kid.

Wow. I’m in tears. I was color guard through high school and had the honor of being Captain my senior year. I loved it. From that first summer band camp day to the last performance, I loved it. No lie, it was hellish some days, but I miss it. It’s been 30+ years since I picked up a flag, but I would twirl today if I could. I showed this to my son who will start band camp for the first time soon. I hope he will get the same enjoyment I did. Thank you for the video.

I’m a current college freshman. I marched through all of high school. I thought I loved band as much as I possibly could until I hit college. I’m now a proud member of a B1G marching band and have 320 best friends. I don’t think I have ever loved anything more than I love the band I’m currently in. My band is supported by the entire state (we are called the Pride of Minnesota for a reason) and it is amazing to feel appreciated for once. My high school band wasn’t appreciated nearly as much as it should have been and being in college band has really shown me that. There is really nothing like it. As soon as someone finds out I’m in UMMB they immediately go “oh my gosh that is SO COOL! I have so much respect for you! I could never do something like that! ” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “the band is the best part of this school.” Or “I only go to the football games for the band.” Or even “you guys work more than the football players and it shows.”
There are SO many people who support bands out there, and although your band may not have the support it deserves, know that there are people who support you who have never even met you or heard of your band. I’ve never felt this kind of love and support for something I’m involved in before and it blows my mind. High school band was one thing but college is a whole other thing. It’s AMAZING!

What I love about competitive marching band is that even though the bands or your band didn't win, we all still clap for each other and don't get mad because we lost, we get super happy just for being able to get to experience it and get out of school, meet new people, impress people, and prove that marching band or any kind if band in particular is a lot harder than your average sport

During the process you hate it. There are times where you would want to give up and quit. There are the older people that tell you it's worth it so you stick through it. That first full run and your first show is the best part of it. It becomes something more but you don't really know what that is until you come back. That's my experience with Marching Band and our relationship is complicated. As a junior it's very rewarding during the last show. Oof

It is worth it. We haven't even started practicing our show, and I already know I love matching band. We are a family, we're there for each other.
We poke fun at the other sections, we say things like "being brass is harder because instrument heat go brr"
But we know it's hard for everyone. But it's so damn rewarding getting it right, after so much work, so much blood, swear, and tears.

I was in band and I didn’t have 100 brothers and sisters that would stick with me. They all hated me. I was alone. No friends. No one to talk to. No one to turn to when it mattered most. Not even my section leaders. They all treated me like dirt, like I wasn’t there, like I was nothing. In their eyes I am nothing. But there was nothing I could do to change that. I have autism, I don’t understand people’s emotions. The rest of the band didn’t give a crap, they just bullied me or ignored me. They’d argue about stupid crap with me. I’m also visually impaired and can’t see their body language very well, they’d argue with me about using a music stand even though I can’t see the music anyway because were in bright light. I would like to say that I felt like a part of the team, like I had a place, that I belonged, that I had a home, but I can’t. I can’t because I had none of those things, the directors talked to the band about it, but it changed nothing. If you’re in band and there’s a member that’s different than you and the rest of the band please include them, talk to them, make them feel like they can rely on the others. Show them that you care, that you support them, that you believe in them. Show them they have a place, a family, friends, and don’t feel alone. Don’t let them feel like I do, include them. No one deserves to be ignored, or not have friends. Everyone deserves those simple things, give them to the person in your band who doesn’t have that. Who knows, you might make a new lifetime friend.

Bruh freaking football teams should come and watch band at competitions, like we practice in sun for 8hrs so we could sound good and make the football team look good. It’s the least that the football teams could do for band.

I saw a thing that said that football games are just band competitions featuring the sportsball teams and I live by that now

I was scared to join marching band because i was just used to concert band, but i’m so fucking happy i joined. Everyone is so nice and accepting and we are a big family, I immediately felt like i belonged there. I don’t know why but just being with the band brings me a sense of comfort, and performing is so much fun.

I will never forget the time I spent hearing “back to page 3” or “go to end of Boogie” millions of times. Or when my friend goes to everyone saying “How bout dem Saders?” I can’t ever forget my 130 Crusader Band Brothers

Beautiful video, I'm one o those parents that engineers the director's ideas, who chaperone the kids, feed them, fix uniforms, etc, etc.
5 years in, 6 to go, I love all my band kids 💗

Thank you for your kind comments. No, I did not mention those things, but I am glad you recognize how difficult all those things in synchronization is to accomplish for any band.

This made me cry. I really miss marching and if I could do it all over again I would. High school, college, and DCI. Thanks for the memories. :*(
