The small yard that U.P. has at Hastings, Nebraska filled up with locomotives after covid slowed the economy down. Been hoping to see the numbers start to dwindle, but no luck yet. I thought at first seeing the blue and white locomotives that it could be the old yard of Rock Island in the Quad Cities. There were still locos there when I left the area over thirty years ago. • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid Год назад +1

That's not always the full story...
Some of these railroads will put them into storage just to tamper with them later if a power shortage comes about. Also, there's the obvious taxing with each unit that's active on the roster.
When there's too many units that aren't all needed,it's better to hoard them in storage than pay galores in taxes for extra power.
Also, most of the time these units will be scrapped if any frame damage has been done but when it does become cheaper to scrap than to process any rebuild program,so be it.
I will personally that I'm sure a good amount of those GE units will end up becoming part of a rebuild program due to their massive control on the market.
For those EMD units? It's very debated...
I'm sure the old units might find usage elsewhere, but the modern units aren't always favored...

Only most of the older ones without the really high up type cabs will need the old Chessie System paint scheme; only after my oldest son has bought enough CSX stock via Wall Street to get the ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission), or whatever they call themselves nowadays, to grant a new charter for the Chessie System, and ending its fallen flag status.
Ofcourse, CSX itself under the circumstances of the dilemma, will have to relocate its headquarters for the corporate offices from Cleveland, Ohio, to either Colorado Springs, Colorado, or El Paso, Texas, especially since we will no longer tolerate the ‘C’ in CSX to stand for Chessie nor will we have the ‘S’ in CSX standing for Seaboard while the ‘X’ that still doesn’t stand for anything presently will from now on after being relocated west of the Mississippi River, the ‘C’ in CSX from now on will stand for Colorado with the ‘S’ standing for Springs, and the ‘X’ standing for Texas, which is what it rightfully deserves to stand for regardless of the circumstances of the dilemma.
Ofcourse, the Chessie System will have brand new corporate headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky.
Other railroads that presently are under the fallen flag status will have to be bought up, which includes the full scale restoration of miles of right-of-ways being undertaken.
Furthermore, the 1972 law passed by the Nixon administration that allows railroads to give up the rights to their money losing lines will have to be repealed in order to encourage more manufacturers to build more factories and warehouses and storage facilities nearer to the train tracks because you can’t always rely on the trucking industry nor aircraft, and the same thing goes for maritime vessels using inland waterways that go underneath certain bridges built with taxpayer dollars.
So basically in other words, what we have in mind is the possible resurrection of a business from its present fallen flag status, and if it requires it, and Heaven knows that it will, we’ll petition every congressional leader in this nation to return the 1934 Gold Reserve Act of FDR back into federal law.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid Год назад +2

It's not weird...Every Class 1 has been doing that for awhile.
Wabtec/GE has always been more technologically advanced than EMD has within the last couple of decades.
Aside from microprocessors, they build reliable traction motors and overall better electronics and software.
The biggest downfalls to EMD,besides EPA regulations, was the mistake of manufacturing the SD90MAC's and SD70AH-T4's...Nobody liked them.
Once modern EMD units hit their mark,it's better to either retire, store,or outright scrap them because of costs and strict emissions testing.EMD being two stroke also make them more gussler on fuel, even though easy to work on.
The only EMD units that might be left in the future are the GP40-2's,SD40-2's,SW1500's,and MP15DC's/AC's even if it's local.
The only good of modern EMD units is that the traction loads quicker and they won't catch on fire like any GE unit.

All those platforms in the video could be updated and modernized to any type of propulsion.
You know the cars that ship CNG or propane? I'd like to see a diesel loco converted over to gas and plumbed into one of those cars being used as a fuel tank.
Or repower an engine to run off ethanol or put a CNG turbine onboard to drive a generator like they use at the power plants.

And yet, even if it takes the entire Kennedy fortunes to do so, a lot of them will be restored to working order, and hauling Kentucky grown cotton to the international cotton market in Memphis.

They are prob the highest of milaged locos that are first to be set aside in what it seems is always an unstable economy. Not sure whose to blame for playing games with our lives like that for a quick buck. EMD is a product of General motors and we all know GM makes American muscle cars with gas guzzling V8s. Also, GM also has a history of dismantling railroad systems in the USA. I am always curious why EMD has faded away and GE took over.

General Motors sold out EMD in 2005 after EPA regulations became more serious and after what happened with the SD90MAC's,which were their first four stroke units including the SD89MX.
Those units were the result of poor engineering and development.
EMD always being two stroke inevitably made them impossible to uphold into modern emissions testing. The same thing happened with Detroit Diesel.
GE has always been much more technologically advanced than EMD in more ways than one. However,Wabtec now owns right to GE's locomotive production and they both have built traction motors for them as well as the software that all modern units have.
GE units have stronger tractive effort and reliable dynamic braking, they are the best for serious freight and where grades are present.Modern EMD units lack these features, but traction loads quicker and they are great for switching so there's that. When GE acquired ALCO,they based the 7FDL's on the 251's which is also why there has been mechanical unreliability because back in the day EMD was much more reliable than ALCO in many ways. But,with the motors being four stroke it obviously makes them easily compliant with tier four regulations. There is nothing wrong with any EMD 567,645,or 710 series but those motors have heavy carbon footprint and are thirsty on diesel.
EMD units are slowly fading away from mainline usage, probably the only units that will be left are the GP40-2's & SD40-2's due to their incredible longevity and widespread distribution. There will still be many EMD units around for shortlines and industries, but GE units will eventually take over Class 1 service.
Wabtec/GE has been taking over for awhile now and they have been less costly than EMD while they've been declining on business except for stationary and marine apparatus where the EPA is irrelevant.
Greenbriar Berkshire nearly crumbled EMD but then Caterpillar became their parent company.Ironically, they also are under serious pressure with the EPA.
The last series of SD70ACE's were much better in quality but then they made mistakes with the SD70AH-T4's which are disliked just like the SD90MAC's that they were based on from the start.
Honestly, the biggest problems towards EMD is the EPA and their outdated electronics. It was good for a short time on rebuilds that they finally discontinued business with Simens and had a partnership with Mitsubishi.

The EPA was an invention of the Nixon administration, but now it’s going beyond its limitations, and either needs someone in congress to be a watchdog over it, or just disband it altogether.

Imagine if you were rich, and had a huge amount of land like Michael Jackson's Ranch, and could set up a big loop of standard gauge track and purchase an old engine like one of these. Just spend the day running it back and forth for hours. I imagine lots of FRA regulations and red tape to go through, but I wonder if technically it's possible. Imagine having your own Dash 9, and connecting a nice K5 rebuilt horn

Again, I say, this is a dump of expired equipment. Upper management would rather not spend the money dealing with them to keep up their profitability up now and get their bonus pay. Money in their pocket now vs pushing a cost off to the future. Making them somebody else's problem.

@V12 Productions GREAT Video, It's A Shame All Of These Locomotives Are Just Sitting There In Waycross, GA You Can Blame PSR For That. Also, CSX Has Trouble Finding Crews To Run Trains. Additionally, While This Is CSX'S Largest Yard, Some Of Norfolk Southern's Yards Are Larger, And Eventually Union Pacific's Bailey Yard.

Modifying an old locomotive to be PTC compliant AND DPU capable is expensive. It's more likely they will gut them and then roll the hulks down the road to the scrapper right there by the diamond you filmed at the last frame of your video. I have seen lots of old U-boats go through the chopper there over the past 22+ years.
